     𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧  𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐭𝐨  𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟  𝐟𝐨𝐫  𝐬𝐨  𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠,     not  allowing  herself  to  be  happy  and  telling  herself  that  she  was  protecting  annie  by  keeping  her  distance,  despite  the  fact  that  it  was  obvious  that  the  two  of  them  had  something  a  little  more  just  friendship  growing  between  them.     maeve  hadn't  allowed  herself  to  think  what  might  happen  if  she  let  herself  actually  be  happy,  to  stop  denying  how  she     𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭     towards  annie  and  let  herself  just  be  happy,  be  in  love  and  stop  worrying  so  much  about  what  might  happen.     for  now,  homelander  at  least  had  a  partial  leash  on  him,  the  threat  of  the  flight  37  video  would  keep  him  in  control  for  a  small  amount  of  time.     in  which  she  would  be  able  to  enjoy  herself  a  little,  allow  herself  to  be  a  little  distracted  and  give  into  that  craving  that  she  had  desired  for  so  long.     it  may  be     𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭  𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝     but  she  could  allow  herself  to  enjoy  such  a  victory  for  now.

     𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞  𝐭𝐨  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲  𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫,     away  from  all  the  watchful  eyes  and  rumours  that  filled  the  tower,  it  would  be  a  place  for  them  and  they  didn't  have  to  worry  about  anyone  interrupting  them.     it  could  be  just  the  two  of  them  and  she  wanted  to  make  it  special  for  annie,  she  made  sure  to  order  her  favourite  food  because  she  wouldn't  expose  annie  to  her  attempt  at  cooking.     she  even  cleaned  up  the  place,  getting  rid  of  the  empty  alcohol  bottles  and  airing  out  the  shame  of  the  last  time  annie  was  in  her  apartment.     tonight,  she  wasn't  queen  maeve,  she  was  just     𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞,     wanting  to  make  it  special  for  the  woman  she  knew  she  was  in  love  with.     it  had  been  the  sort  of  night  that  she  never  expected  to  ever  have,  she  didn't  feel  like  she  ever  deserved  this  and  she  didn't  let  herself  have  these  moments.     annie  was  always  beautiful  to  her,  but  right  now,  in  the  low  lighting,  with  some  gentle  music  playing,  she  was  practically  glowing.     the  two  of  them  were  sat  on  the  couch  together  when  annie  admitted  to  being     𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬     and  it  reminded  her  that  annie  had  never  been  with  a  woman  before,  she  had  admitted  that  when  they  had  first  kissed.     a  smile  pulls  at  her  lips,  a  hand  moving  to  push  blonde  strands  of  hair  behind  annie's  ear,     "     we  can  go  as  far  as  you  want,  okay?     you  are  in  complete  control,  i  don't  want  to  do  anything  to  make  you  comfortable,     "     maggie  admits  gently,  not  wanting  to  scare  her  off,  she  wanted  this  to  be  good  for  her  and  she  knew  that  she  had  to  take  this  at  annie's  pace,     "     but  whatever  you  want  to  do     -     we  can  do  that.     i  just  want  to  be  with  you  and  forget  about  everything  else,     "

     𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬  𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤  𝐨𝐧  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞  𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬  𝐭𝐨  𝐨𝐧𝐞  𝐨𝐟  𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭  𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟,     only  john  would  be  crazy  enough  to  screw  around  with  the  absolute  nutcase  that  is  stormfront.     shaking  her  head,  running  a  hand  through  her  red  hair  as  she  looks  away  from  him,     "     don't  compare  me  to  that  bitch.     we  are  nothing  alike,  she's  the  worst  kind  of  person  and  now  i  gotta  save  your  ass  from  her,     "     she  should've  asked  him  about  this  before  agreeing  to  let  him  stay.     maeve  was  doing  her  best  to  keep  out  of  trouble  and  he  was  bringing  that  to  her  door,  expecting  her  to  cover  and  protect  him  from  her.     but  she  wasn't  going  to  send  him  back  out  there,  she  would  never     𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞     herself  if  something  happened  to  him  and  she  could've  prevented  it.     as  much  as  she  wasn't  looking  for  trouble,  she  would  do  anything  for  those  she  cared  about  and  as  much  she  tried  not  to  care  about  john,  she  just  couldn't  help  it.

     "     𝐢  𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞  𝐲𝐨𝐮,  𝐣𝐨𝐡𝐧,     "     maeve  admitted,  looking  back  at  him  and  she  stepped  towards  him,     "     you're  not  going  anywhere.     you're  gonna  stick  around  and  we've  got  you.     stop  acting  like  a  wounded  dog  and  be  the  man  i  know  you  are,     "     motioning  for  him  to  follow  her  again,  she  knew  that  it  wouldn't  take  long  for  him  to  get  comfortable  around  here.     her  girls  were  similar  to  him  in  a  way  that  they  had  all  run  from  dangerous  situations  and  she  had  kept  them  safe,  she  could  do  the  same  with  him  and  she  just  hoped  that  he  didn't  make  her  regret  helping  him.     she  could  handle  most  trouble  that  came  her  way,  but  she  had  heard  rumours  about  how     𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬     stormfront  was  and  she  knew  this  might  be  the  biggest  risk  she  had  taken  in  a  long  time.     he  just  better  be  prepared  to  fight  and  protect  her  girls  if  he  is  bringing  this  chaos  her  way.

     𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐚𝐭  𝐚  𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲  𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐨  𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤  𝐚𝐭  𝐡𝐢𝐦,     arms  crossing  across  her  chest  as  she  looks  at  him.     it  seemed  that  no  matter  what  happened,  her  and  john  always  ended  up  back  in  it  together,     "     get  some  food  in  here,  it's  pretty  good  and  i  don't  think  you're  gonna  complain  too  much  if  you're  that  hungry,     "     she's  half  teasing,  she  knew  he  couldn't  afford  to  be  picky  about  anything  considering  his  situation,     "     when  you're  done,  come  and  find  me  again.     my  place  is  over  there,     "     she  points  in  the  direction  of  where  she  stays  before  moving,  giving  him  a  pat  on  the  arm  as  she  looks  up  at  him,     "     get  comfortable,  be  nice  and  i'll  to  find  you  some  place  to  crash.     but  if  i  find  out  you're  messing  around  with  any  of  my  girls     -     stormfront  won't  be  the  one  you  gotta  worry  about,  okay?     "     maeve  wasn't  teasing  this  time,  she  couldn't  have  him  thinking  she  had  gotten  soft  in  the  years  they  hadn't  seen  each  other,  she  had  other  people  who  relied  on  her  as  well  as  him,  she  couldn't  have  him  making  it  worse  for  her  girls.

He hops off of the car, patting the side of it like it’s a big animal and not a random truck with variety of guns loaded onto it. “hm? Who?” was Maggie talking about some of her girls again? John was thinking about how to convince her to stay around more, didn’t catch her question.

Ooh, right! She wants to know about his boss.. used-to-be boss now. The blond shrugs, acting totally innocent “I did nothing! I’m a saint, Mag! And I’m not- okay maybe I’m not running but hiding? That makes sense to you at all?” he motions with his hands as he reasons “I think you know her, Stormfront? That’s her name.. well she’s good in bed but has a very short temper! Just like you.. and I may or may not disobeyed her once and that’s why she’s after me! Not that she’s searching for me but she might show up at your door and asks about me, yeah..”

When his speech is over, he shoves both hands in his jacket’s pocket, kicking a wrench away that was abandoned on the floor “you don’t believe me, do you?” his voice defeated “you are the only person I can trust to help me, if you leave me out there I’ll be dead..”

His lips stretching in a thin line, the man moves his gaze from his shoes up to Maggie’s face, making his best puppy eyes that he hopes she falls for.. “I’ll be out of your hair as soon as I can, I promise!”

A loud grumble of his belly interrupts and John looks away, blushing, subtly curls in on himself “..sorry, been a while since last time I ate something. Erm.. if formal introduction is over, can I have some food now? Anything that you girls have will be fine, I’m starving.”

     𝐢𝐭  𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭  𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞  𝐚  𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬  𝐭𝐨  𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞  𝐨𝐮𝐭  𝐰𝐡𝐨  𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲  𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭,     maeve  had  gotten  so  used  to  feeling  homelander's  eyes  on  her  that  she  barely  even  noticed  it  anymore.     if  anything  she  would  notice  the  absence  of  his  gaze  more  than  she  noticed  him  actually  looking  at  her.     his  possessiveness  really  knew  had  no  end,  even  though  the  two  of  had  never  really  been  in  love,  he  didn't  know  how  to  love  and  she  had  forced  that  part  of  her  into  a  dark  corner,  never  to  be  let  out  again.     their  relationship  had  been  some     𝐩𝐫  𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞     that  they  had  been  forced  into  and  whilst  it  had  bled  into  their  personal  life,  it  had  never  really  been  real,  not  in  the  way  some  of  her  other  relationships  had  been.     but  somehow  homelander  had  convinced  himself  that  there  was  still  something  between  them  and  there  always  would  be.     maeve  tried  not  to  give  it  too  much  thought,  she  didn't  want  him  to  think  that  she  actually  cared  about  him  and  she  didn't  want  to  give  him  any     𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧     that  whatever  delusion  he  was  dreaming  up,  she  was  thinking  the  exact  same  thing.

     𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬  𝐚𝐬  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝  𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫  𝐚𝐭  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞,     downing  the  drink  in  her  hand  before  turning  to  the  bartender  to  request  another  drink  for  herself  and  annie  before  letting  out  a  sigh  as  she  left  the  empty  glass  on  the  table,     "     pay  no  attention  to  him.     it's  what  he  thrives  on  and  i've  gotten  used  to  it,     "     maeve  gave  the  bartender  a  smile  as  she  took  the  new  drink  from  him,  sliding  the  one  for  annie  over  to  her,     "     you're  telling  me  little  miss  iowa  has  never  had  a  jealous  ex  before.     or  let  me  guess,  you've  only  ever  dated  sweet  boys  who  were  perfect  prince  charmings,     "     a  cynical  tone  to  her  voice  as  blue  eyes  roll  as  she  takes  a  sip  of  her  drink,  barely  glancing  at  homelander  as  she  looked  around  the  party.     she  hated  these  things,  she  hated  parading  around  and  forcing  a  smile,  she  would  just  keep  drinking  until  she  knew  she  had  been  here  long  enough  to  make  a     𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞     to  satisfy  the  big  bosses.     looking  back  at  annie,  she  just  gave  her  a  small  smile,     "     seriously,  starlight,  don't  pay  him  any  attention,  i  don't  because  i  know  it  is  exactly  what  he  wants.     how  about  instead  we  finish  these  drinks,  find  an  excuse  to  leave  and  go  get  a  real  drink  somewhere  not  in  the  tower?     "

     𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐨  𝐛𝐞  𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬  𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡  𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦  𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝  𝐨𝐮𝐭  𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞,     but  it  was  better  to  ask  for  forgiveness  than  to  wait  for  permission  to  do  what  she  felt  was  right.     then  when  ben  agreed  to  come  with  her,  saying  it  was  the  right  idea,  she  didn't  even  think  twice  before  getting  into  the  car  to  drive  to  the  location  of  the  secret  lab.     they  didn't  need  to  wait  for  the  debate  on  whether  this  was  the  right  thing  to  do  or  not,  even  if  they  came  to  the  same     𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧     that  her  and  ben  already  had.     they  had  already  gone  out  of  their  way  to  rescue  two  sets  of  triplets  who  were  raised  in  different  vought  labs,  to  make  sure  no  other  kids  were  raised  in  a  way  that  had  turned  homelander  into  the  monster  he  was.     but  the  difference  with  this  lab,  the  difference  with  the  teenager  inside  was  that  she  was  a  perfect  genetic  match  to  homelander.     it  shouldn't  really  be  a  shock  that  vought  managed  to  create  a  clone  and  for  the  most  part,  maggie  understood  why  they  had  should  wait  for  the  discussion,  but  she  refused  to  sit  around  and  wait.     the  whole  point  of  getting  those  other  kids  out  was  to  prevent  another  homelander,  which  was  exactly     𝐰𝐡𝐲     they  had  to  do  this  and  they  couldn't  wait.

     𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝  𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞  𝐨𝐟  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐥𝐚𝐛,     the  plans  of  the  lab  open  on  the  hood  of  the  car  as  they  tried  to  figure  out  the  best  course  of  action.     it  was  likely  this  lab  was  going  to  be  crawling  with  people,  scientists,  security  on  a  large  scale  and  then,  they  had  the  supe  inside  who  was  potentially  powerful  and  dangerous.     but  something  just  felt  off,  like  everything  was  too  quiet  and  she  couldn't  quite  place  why  she  just  felt  like     𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠     was  odd.     maybe  it  was  just  the  nerves  and  knowing  that  it  could  potentially  be  a  trap  or  the  two  of  them  may  not  even  walk  out  of  this,     "     looks  like  the  living  quarters  are  the  furtherest  down,  guess  they  couldn't  risk  her  escaping,     "     maggie  said,  pointing  at  the  lower  levels  and  trying  to  shake  that  feeling  that  something  about  all  of  this  was  really  odd.     they  were  outside  what  should  be  a  fully  functional  vought  lab  and  yet  they  were  the  only  car  here,  something  was  different  about  this  and  she  couldn't  explain  it,     "     c'mon,  let's  just  get  in  there,  make  this  quick  and  get  her  out.     the  kid's  been  there  long  enough  and  god  knows  what  they've  been  doing  to  her,     "

     𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠,     knowing  ben  was  behind  her  because  they  always  had  each  other's  backs  when  it  came  to  things  like  this.     she  wouldn't  be  able  to  do  this  without  him.     but  the  further  they  stepped  inside,  the  more  she  felt  like  something  was  wrong,  the  place  looked  abandoned,  like  one  day  they  all  just  dropped  everything  and  walked  out.     was  it  possible  they  were  too  late?     the  evidence  was  suggesting  this  place  had  been  abandoned  for  a  while  even  if  the  generator  was  still  running  the  power,  the  girl  could  either  be  long  gone  or  potentially  dead.     looking  back  at  ben  as  they  waited  for  the  elevator  to  take  them  down,     "     this  place  should  be  swarming  with  people.     we  shouldn't  have  been  able  to  just  walk  in,     "     maggie  pointed  out,  tapping  her  foot  as  she  felt  the  nerves  building  in  her  chest,  watching  the  lights  as  they  descended  the  floors,     "     there  was  nothing  in  those  reports  sage  found  to  suggest  this  place  was  abandoned.     people  should  be  here  and  yet  we  haven't  found  anyone,     "     hands  move  to  rest  on  her  hips  as  she  looks  at  him,  she  didn't  know  what  they  were  going  to  find  once  these  doors  opened,  but  she  knew  that  there  was  no  one  else  she  would  want  with  her  right  now,     "     ben,  what  if  we're  too  late?     what  if  we  can't  save  her?     "

     𝐡𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝  𝐡𝐨𝐰  𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡  𝐡𝐞  𝐠𝐨𝐭  𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧.     maggie  knew  exactly  what  he  was  and  yet  they  were  at  a  constant  stalemate  with  one  another.     she  couldn't  kill  him  without  blowing  her  own  cover,  no  one  in  their  neighbourhood  would  even  begin  to  understand  about  monsters,  creatures  of  the  night  and  those  who  are  trained  to  hunt  them.     plus  she  doubts  any  of  them  would  believe  her  that  her  hot  new  neighbour  was  actually  a  vampire.     ben  carter  was  so  much  more  than  what  they  all  thought,  she  had  to  resist  rolling  her  eyes  whenever  they  talked  about  how  charming  and  attractive  he  is  because  she  all  knew  that  was  part  of  a  vampire's     𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞,     gaining  trust  to  be  able  to  get  close  to  them.     he  was  constantly  there,  despite  how  much  she  wished  he  wasn't  and  as  much  as  she  knew  what  he  was,  she  was  pretty  sure  that  he  knew  exactly  what  she  was  too.

     𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭  𝐭𝐨  𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲  𝐢𝐧  𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥,     to  not  let  emotions  get  the  better  of  her  and  to  not  get  so  frustrated  at  him  that  she  threw  a  punch  in  his  direction.     but  sometimes  it  just  got  too  much,  which  was  exactly  how  she  found  herself     𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠     him  to  a  wall  away  from  some  summer  party  that  one  of  their  neighbours  were  having.     she  was  was  only  here  because  her  neighbours  had  told  her  that  ben  was  planning  to  come,  she  was  only  here  to  make  sure  he  didn't  kill  anyone.     but  the  way  he  spoke,  it  just  made  her  roll  her  eyes,  pushing  him  against  the  wall  once  more  and  letting  him  go,  taking  a  step  back  from  him,     "     you  are  fucking  delusional,  you  know  that,  right?     "

     𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲  𝐚𝐥𝐥  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫  𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬,     they  all  had  their  own  ways  of  dealing  with  the  shitshow  that  was  their  lives  and  she  had  been  waiting  to  see  what  annie's  would  be.     clearly  making  bad  choices  when  it  comes  to  the  men  she  sleeps  with.     first,  hugh  campbell.     now,  billy  butcher.     though  she  may  actually  understand  the  appeal  of  the  second  choice.     for  her,  it  had�� been  drinking  till  she  was  numb  and  having  mindless  sex  with  strangers  that  didn't  matter,  a  bad  habit  that  she  had  been  trying  to  stop  and  she  took  so  many  steps  back  by  letting  herself  get  drunk  and  fuck  butcher.     even  worse  to  find  out  that  she  had     𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭     probably  the  only  true  friend  she  ever  had.     whilst  it  may  have  started  out  as  just  a  way  to  deal  with  the  chaos  of  life  as  a  vought  brought  and  paid  for  supe,  annie  had  never  quite  been  able  to  separate  her  feelings  and  she  had  let  herself  fall  in  love  with  him.     she  should've  told  her  sooner,  maeve  would've  let  her  know  that  men  like  butcher  are  the  type  you  run  from,  not  fall  head  over  heels  in  love  with.

     𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭  𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝  𝐭𝐨  𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭  𝐨𝐮𝐭  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫'𝐬  𝐣𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐲  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞  𝐭𝐨  𝐝𝐨  𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡  𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧  𝐡𝐞𝐫.     homelander  had  taken  so  much  from  him  and  he  probably  just  saw  this  as  another  thing  that  homelander  would  take  away  from  him.     which  probably  said  more  about  butcher's  feelings  towards  annie  than  he  had  even  had  probably  told  her.     did  that  mean  she  thought  he  was  doing  the  right  thing?     fuck  no.     she  just     𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝     it  in  a  way  that  was  all  just  a  little  too  familiar.     he  was  self  destructive,  just  like  she  was.     but  even  when  she  was  trying  to  be  better,  she  still  managed  to  find  a  way  to  fuck  it  all  up.     maeve  could  barely  look  at  herself  right  now  and  she  almost  wished  annie  would  be  more  angry  at  her,  instead  of  this  heartbroken  look  that  was  written  so  plainly  across  her  face.     the  moment  she  stood,  she  almost  braced  herself  for  a hit  that  she  didn't  know  if  it  would  come.     or  maybe  that  was  just  a  reaction  of  the     𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞     environment  that  she  ahd  been  in  for  ages  that  she  always  expected  a  violent  outburst.

     𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐨  𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩  𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟  𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦  𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡  𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐥𝐲,     pushing  herself  off  from  where  she  was  sat,  shaking  her  head  as  she  moved  over  to  her  quickly,  standing  in  front  of  her,     "     no.     don't  you  ever  say  that     -     homelander  is  not  right.     he  knows  fuck  all  about  any  of  this  shit  and  he  wants  you  to  be  as  broken  and  lonely  as  he  is,     "     it  was  clear  from  her  tone  that  she  was  speaking  from  an  experience  of  almost  two  decades  around  that  man.     sighing  softly  as  she  ran  a  hand  through  her  hair,  she  didn't  have  the  answers  for  annie,  nothing  that  would  make  her  feel  better  and  nothing  that  would  even  potentially  be  truthful.     she  knew  nothing  about  the  relationship  with  annie  and  butcher,  she  was  shocked  that  it  was  even  a  thing  considering  that  butcher  wasn't  exactly  subtle  about  his     𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞     of  supes.     but  if  annie  had  fallen  for  him,  clearly  she  had  seen  something  that  he  doesn't  let  anyone  else  see,     "     hurt  people  hurt  people.     it's  not  right,  but  it  happens.     some  people  get  so  used  to  losing  people  that  they  lash  out  instead  of  holding  on,     "

YEAH, HE IS AN ASSHOLE. BILLY BUTCHER WAS BY FAR THE BIGGEST- next to Homelander -ASSHOLE that she had ever come across, and Annie had come across many of them. As she spent more time with him, she began to see less of his frustrating side and more of his true self. Their relationship- or whatever they were, wasn't perfect, as Billy still could drive her crazy and make her want to tear her hair out at times. However, she also discovered that there was a side of him that was unexpectedly heartwarming, and he would go out of his way to do things for her that truly touched her heart. Annie would have the worse day at work; having to deal with Homelander's shit gets exhausting. The chaos that is Vought- she found herself bearing an immense burden of stress, the tension in her muscles reaching an almost overwhelming level. But Billy would make things less shitty; his words had a way of making her feel as though a flurry of butterflies were DANCING wildly in her stomach. He bought her favorite snacks or made her something to eat. In Butcher's embrace, Annie found her SWEET ESCAPE from the harsh realities of the outside world. The moments spent in his arms, in his sanctuary, provided a healing balm for her weary soul, even if it were for a short moment.

Annie's mind snapped back to the present as Maggie reached out and grasped her hand. Their eyes met, and Annie's brown eyes flickered with emotion as she listened to the older supe's words. Despite her nonchalant shrug, Annie couldn't deny that she was aware of the situation. However, that awareness didn't diminish the pain she felt. " What is there to be jealous of  ? I- I'm not dating Homelander. I'm not in love with him; I'm not his girlfriend ! It's not real. Homelander and I are not dating. It's all for show ! And Billy should know that. -- GOD, why are men so- so fucking... complicated and stupid. Just SO STUPID. " She brought her other hand up to rub against her temples, shaking her head in annoyance and biting down at her bottom lip. She brushed at her tear-stained cheek, her cheeks and eyes red, with blonde strands loose from her bun. She didn't think her day could get any worse... but it does. Maggie begins talking again. The blonde's eyebrows rose dramatically as Maggie revealed that she had been the one to guide them down the Soldier Boy trail. The redhead then explained that she had gone to investigate what had happened. And before Annie could remark on the whole Soldier Boy ordeal, she was left speechless as the older super confessed about her and Butcher, rendering her unable to utter a single word. Butcher and Maggie had sex; he never mentioned Annie, and not even once did he consider her feelings. It was not a thought that dared cross his mind. It seemed like she was nothing to him; she was nothing to him.

HOMELANDER HAD ONCE ' KINDLY ' INFORMED ANNIE HOW MEN LIKE WILLIAM BUTCHER will only leave her heart mangled up in the middle of an ally, unimportant and nonexistent. Very fatherly of him; what bullshit. The younger supe sneered with a roll of her eyes; he didn't tell her because he cared; Homelander told her because he was a fucking asshole that wanted to control her life along with everyone else ! Using the whole,' we're family here ' - as if it meant something to him, which she knew it didn't. While at the time, Annie didn't once agree... but now ? HER HEART DROPS, TORN TO PIECES, and left to rot away in its feelings... It's already too late. She found herself trapped in the depths of heartbreak, her emotions shattered and scattered like shards of glass. She had fallen deeply in love with Billy, unknowingly subjecting her heart to an agonizing ordeal. She did this to herself. She stood from Maggie's couch; her movements were deliberate and cautious, as if she feared that any sudden or careless action might cause her to collapse to the ground. Her eyes glistened with tears, blurring her vision, while her lips trembled as she struggled to hold back a choked sob, trying to swallow the lump lodged in her throat.

Annie tightly shut her eyes and raised a shaky finger toward Maggie, as if to ward off the impending conversation. A single shake of her head as she placed a hand over her chest, above her heart, feeling the aches that came with the emotional turmoil. " Don't- don't say sorry- I- you don't.... you didn't know, I'm- I'm not angry at you. " Her heart hurt with the realization that Homelander had been right all along. Despite the pain, a bitter laugh escaped her lips, exposing the damaged look in her eyes as she gazed up at the ceiling. She silently questioned why she had become entangled with Butcher, her UNSPOKEN plea echoing in the empty room. " - I can't- Homelander was right... " But it was to herself more than to Maggie. " ... I'm such a fucking idiot. I let myself fall for him like some stupid, pathetic little girl... I'm so fucking- " Annie sniffles, sweeping away the tears that dare stream down her cheeks like a faucet; they won't stop. " - I should have known... I should have known... why would he love me ? He never cared about me... I should have known.... God, I- don't know what to say... I just- he.... why does he keep hurting me... ? "

     𝐛𝐞𝐧  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝  𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫  𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝'𝐯𝐞  𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧  𝐟𝐨𝐫  𝐡𝐢𝐦.     sure,  he  was a  good  and  fun  fuck,  but  falling  in  love  was  the  part  she  didn't  expect,  it  caught  her  off  guard  and  at  first,  it  made  her  feel  like  she  was  losing  it.     realising  that  she  didn't  want  anything  to  happen  to  him  made  her  feel  sick  at  first,  she  knew  that  if  she  felt  like  this,  it  meant  that  she  had  something  to     𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞     and  she  already  felt  like  she  had  lost  so  much.     she  didn't  realise  when  she  sent  butcher  and  the  boys  to  russia  that  would've  meant  they  would  find  soldier  boy.     she  had  believed  he  was  gone,  just  like  everything  one  else  and  then  he  comes,  it  shifted  everything  and  gave  them  some  sort  of  hope  that  they  could  actually  stop  ares.     but  as  much  as  she  was  scared  to  lose  him,  she  felt  better  going  into  any  fight  knowing  he  was  at  her  side.     they  worked  well  together,  better  than  anyone  had  ever  expected,  they  were     𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐲     and  fierce,  it  was  something  she  had  craved  without  realising  she  needed  it.     sure,  her  and  homelander  could  work  well  together,  but  he  had  been selfish  in  a  way  that  meant  there  wasn't  always  room  for  anyone  else.     which  she  had  been  worried  that  soldier  boy  would  be  the  same,  but  he  wasn't  and  the  two  of  them  just  seemed  to  know  exactly  what  the  other  was  thinking  in  a  fight,  able  to  finish  a  move  and  it  was  seamless.     he  may  have  been  unexpected,  but  now  she  would  do     𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠     to  keep  him  in  her  life  and  at  her  side.

     𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞  𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬  𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐥𝐲  𝐚𝐬  𝐡𝐞  𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐮𝐩  𝐭𝐨  𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝,     her  hand  resting  on  his  chest  and  she  can  feel  the  shift  when  he  talked  about  russia  and  she  could  only  imagine  what  he  had  gone  through.     she  would  do  whatever  she  had  to  do  to  ensure�� that  he  never  ended  up  in  a  place  like  that  again,  that  he  would  get  to  have  his  freedom  and  enjoy  his  life.     he  would've  fucking  earned  it  if  they  were  able  to  actually     𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩     ares  and  his  washed  up  version  of  the  seven.     when  he  cups  her  cheek  and  his  eyes  meet  hers,  she  can  feel  the  way  her  heart  is  racing  against  her  own  chest  and  she  almost  wishes  she  couldn't  feel  it,  it  was  distracting  and  all  she  wanted  to  do  was  hear  him  right  now.     yet  she  couldn't  help  but  blink  in  surprise  as  he  called  her  maggie,  a  name  that  felt  like  it  belonged  to  a  stranger  considering  how  many  people  called  her  maeve  over  anything  else.     his  words  meant  more  to  her  than  she  knew  how  to  say,  she  just  smiled  softly  before  moving  from  where  she  was,  straddling  his  hips  and  hands  move  up  to  cup  his  face  as  she  kisses  him  with  a  soft  groan.

     𝐢𝐭  𝐦𝐚𝐲  𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞  𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧  𝐚𝐧  𝐢𝐧  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧,     but  it  wasn't  something  she  could  ever  regret  doing.     if  soldier  boy  had  exploded  there,  he  would've  killed  them  all  and  as  much  as  she  had  been  willing  to  do  anything  to  make  sure  homelander  died,  she  would  never  risk  them  all.     especially  not  with  annie  right  there,  who  she  had  already     𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝     over  and  over.     she  didn't  even  care  if  she  died,  she  already  knew  fighting  homelander  was  likely  to  be  a  fight  to  the  death  and  she  had  made  peace  with  that.     but  she  never  wanted  this,  she  never  would've  wanted  annie  at  risk  like  this.     even  in  that  moment  where  they  locked  eyes  and  she  knew  annie  knew  exactly  what  she  was  about  to  do,  she  didn't  hesitate  and  she  didn't  even     𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩     to  think  about  might  happen  to  her.     maggie  knew  that  soldier  boy's  blast  would  get  rid  of  her  powers,  which  meant  it  was  incredibly  likely  she  wouldn't  survive  the  fall.     but  she  would've  done  the  right  thing,  like  annie  believed  she  would  do.     she  would  be  a  hero  like  annie  had  once  believed  she  was.

     𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞  𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞,     her  whole  body  ached,  she  had  completely  lost  her  right  eye  and  she  was  looking  to  a  slow  recovery.     all  the  compound  v  in  her  blood  had  been  burned  away,  she  was  human  and  as  much  as  she  was  relieved  to  no  longer  have  be  queen  maeve,  she  was  not  looking  forward  to  this  long  recovery.     honestly,  she  was  surprised  she  wasn't  more  hurt,  her  left  arm  was  in  a  sling,  bandage  over  her  eye  and  she  was  covered  in  bruises  and  cuts  that  were  likely  to  scar.     no  longer  made  of     𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥,     she  was  going  to  have  to  be  careful  with  herself  now,  she  was  going  to  have  to  remember  that  she  no  longer  had  the  strength  or  power  she  had  grown  used  to.     but  nothing  could've  prepared  for  the  emotional  pain  she  felt  when  seeing  annie  again  for  the  first  time,  seeing  the  look  of  pain  on  her  face  and  the  blonde  always  had  such  a  way  with  words  that     𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤     her  right  in  the  heart.

“ being loved and being admired are not within a breath of being the same, but they are both dangerous. ” one scars the ego, the other the heart. perhaps that, too, is too simple of an observation.

she witnesses the admiration maeve receives from a public who adores thinking their heroes do not bleed. but the moment the charade is over? the moment the adoring public realizes that heroes, too, can fall? that when you stab them, red pours from their broken skin? and then there is love.....it's what will save this world, you know.

     "     𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲  𝐝𝐨  𝐲𝐨𝐮  𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭  𝐦𝐞  𝐭𝐨  𝐬𝐚𝐲?     "     maeve  sighed,  taking  another  drag  of  her  cigarette  before  looking  over  at  annie  with  an  unemotional  look  on  her  face.     she  didn't  get  why  she  was  so     𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭     on  trying  to  do  the  right  thing.     annie  was  always  going  to  be  the  best  of  them,  but  it  also  could  be  the  thing  that  could  put  her  in  the  most  danger.     as  much  as  she  wished  she  could  help,  maeve  didn't  want  to  keep  going  up  against  homelander,  they  were  never  going  to  win.     running  a  hand  through  red  strands  of  hair,  shaking  her  head  as  she  looked  away  from  her  because  she  couldn't  see  the  look  of     𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭     on  the  blonde's  face,     "     there  is  nothing  you  can  say  that's  gonna  make  me  change  my  mind,  annie.     i  won't  fight  him,     "     she  took  another  drag  exhaling  smoke  before  looking  over  at  her  again,  a  dark  look  in  blue  eyes  as  her  anger  reaches  a  boiling  point,     "     i  saved  your  fucking  life  over  and  over,  but  you're  so  insistent  putting  yourself  on  the  line  to  save  people  who  don't  fucking  matter!     "     maybe  it  was  all  the  years  of  being  around  homelander  for  her  to  have  that  atittude,  but  she  also  didn't  think  that  annie  should  be  consistently  putting  herself  at  risk  like  this.     no  one  was  going  to  thank  her  for  it.     no  one  would  even  remember  her  if  she  got  herself  killed  trying  to  do  the  right  thing.

     𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐮𝐩  𝐧𝐨𝐭  𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐰𝐚𝐬  𝐚  𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞  𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐲  𝐨𝐧  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭,     considering  how  much  she  had  been  drinking,  it  was  a  miracle  that  she  even  could  stand  up  right  now.     moving  towards  her,  blue  eyes  fiery  as  she  looked  at  her,     "     if  you  think  i  am  going  to  stand  you  and  watch  you  get  yourself  killed,  think  again.     i  won't  do  it.     i  can't  do  it,     "     the  last  part  was  whispered  almost  like  she  was  scared  of  saying  it  or  it  even  be  heard.     she  wasn't  good  at  this,  being  honest  with  her  feelings  and  she  had  a  good  reason  to  hold  back  now.     annie  had     𝐧𝐨  𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚     what  homelander  would  do  to  her  if  he  knew  what  maeve  felt  for  her.     his  jealousy  and  possessiveness  was  still  ever  present,  a  threat  on  every  kind  of  meaningful  relationship  she  tried  to  have  in  her  life.     the  last  thing  she  wanted  was  for  this  fight  to  reveal  the  one  thing  she  had  been  trying  to  keep  safe  and  risked  her  losing  everything,     "     i  can't  stop  you  if  this  is  really  what  you  want  to  do,  go  with  your  little  twink  friend  and  get  yourselves  killed  trying  to  fight  him.     but  i  can't  keep  saving  you  if  you  insist  of  running  head  first  into  danger,  so  good  luck  but  get  out,  i  can't  do  it,     "
