Vetra Nyx is that person you know that’s had every odd job imaginable - some you’ve heard of and others you didn’t even know it was a thing that people got paid to do.

Construction? We know that one - both as a regular hand and as a foreman. Dancing? We heard about that one too - it’s a great way to make a lot of money. We even know about the smuggling - high risk but a high payout.

But what about the other work? What about all the odd jobs she worked that filled the gaps in between construction jobs and smuggling runs? 

Like the few months she worked as a dish washer and then a short-order cook at a greasy spoon at one of the mining outposts her and Sid lived at. The weeks she spent as a barker at a carnival, setting up the Ferris wheel, and working at the ring-toss booth. The month she spent working as an aquarium and terrarium cleaner and turtlesitter. The three months she spent selling timeshares. The few weeks working as an assistant who cleans up crime scenes. The time she worked as a courier, a veterinarian acupuncturist, scrubbing and detailing shuttles, answering surveys, and building sofas. All these jobs, and so many others, were all invaluable to her.

The thing is, though, they weren’t valuable because of the skills she learned doing them (although it’s a nice perk). The big, valuable thing from all these jobs was that she learned it’s not what you know - it’s who you know.

She builds a huge network of contacts, all from working these weird jobs she holds for a few days, weeks, months at a time. For Vetra, who she knew meant she could find work quick to keep food on the table, keep Sid in a safe home, get Sid into a nice-ish school, put clothes on their backs, take her sister out for ice cream every now and then.

Of course Vetra is a capable black/grey-market smuggler, great with a gun and good to have on your side, but none of that can stack up to what she can get done for herself, for Sid, and especially for the Initiative and the Pathfinder because of her network. Her network kept her safe and kept her working, and she wouldn’t be where she is or who she is without it.

Vetra: The basics. The fancy stuff I got from a batarian merc who took pity on me. She really knew something. Old as the stars, had seen everything. Wish Sid could have known her.

can we please talk about this badass batarian grandma??? like?? she looked at this poor teen struggling and was like “okay, adopted”? what happened to her? did she die? was it from old age or in a fight? was vetra there? just how much vetra trusted this lady if she thinks it would be nice if sid could’ve met her???

sigh, why does bioware put such cool things into banter and never delves into them...

Vetra: Our father didn’t die. Or maybe he did, we don’t really know. He just didn’t come home. He was involved in some bad things. Bad people. And eventually it caught up to him. There was no where to run. Not like a whole new galaxy.

Ryder: Is that why you came here? 

Vetra: When you’re young and stupid, you make bad decisions. Piss off the wrong people. That sorta thing never goes away. Not for you, not for the ones you care about.

I can’t help but think there’s a hell of a story behind this vague admission from Vetra Nyx. 

By her own acknowledgement, her dad got up to bad things with bad people, and so did she. Maybe she caught herself making his mistakes, the ones that might be the end of her just like it was the end of him. Once she was embedded in the life, maybe she started to see the warning signs in her own life that he missed, or ignored, or both - and she gets scared.

But what exactly happened? What were her bad decisions? Does she have people after her for her bad decisions? She was dealing with people bad enough that when she figured out that Kesh was supplying something big in a new galaxy, far away from her bad decisions, she saw the opportunity to cut and run.

Some folks like Suvi, Gil, and Liam are here for the adventure, but Vetra tells us several times, in several different ways how she sees Andromeda as a way to start over. 

The concept stands in stark contrast to her “you play the hand you’re dealt” motto. Does she delineate between the hand she’s been dealt and the cards she pulled from the deck? Taking care of Sid was the hand she was dealt, but not the smuggling or the people she chose to work with.

Does she ever tell Ryder about what happened, you think? About the bad people and the bad decisions? Maybe it’s something that she unloads one night as Ryder and she stay up late, sharing more and more personal stories, feeling out the depths of their trust in one another. A story not told for sympathy or advice, a story just shared, a history entrusted.
