caught up with succession.
to be quite frank, any show I watch, I eventually put into words why or why not it makes me happy/sad/frustrated/anything.
this is a first where I cant quite explain what makes this show so compelling to me.
I described this show to my non-succession watching friends as an exhibition of that one dimly, yet persistent feeling of discomfort like sand stuck in your shoe. sure there's not much violence or tragedy or horror. but the sense of doom is unshakable and prevalent.
initially I thought it's because what they talk of is beyond my comprehension. that there are references and inferences i simply will never get owning to me not being American. but you see, that's what makes this show shine.
the fact that I, a non-billionaire, non-white, non-american still resonates with these characters somewhere.
i feel like the pivot, the focus of succession always has been the dichotomy of ruthlessness of people in the upper echelons of society and their humanity that doesn't extend beyond their individual sphere. because what else explains the audience seeing Roman Roy call an election that brought in the biggest bigot (as I've learnt is a direct parallel to the very real 2016 election) and empathising with his long overdue breakdown the very next episode.
I think I say Roman because while each character in that show is a small universe of this contrast, it falls into most relief in Roman. He signs away a nation's peace to land a deal that's now shaky, all in the name of trying to be his father. he however, is not his father.
while Roman was the kid who always tried to fit into the too big shoes of his father, Kendall was the one who fit them perfectly. shiv meanwhile, was the one who wore and fit them, but developed a sense that her father's smile was less pride and more indulgence.
we all carry scars. succession shows how those scars can manifest for everyone because the people who carry them have enough power to leave them festering open, as a backup plan.
as the final episode of this behemoth show hits next week, I can't help but wonder - what is it about succession brand of discomfort that makes it so magnetising?
I know it's a whole lot of word vomit but the Twitter part of the audience also, sometimes, feels like I'm in succession. I'd love to hear thoughts on why people love this show!

would love more in depth reasoning for your tomgreg odds and maybe the betrayal plot line
So, with tomgreg, the main question for me is not "do I think, based on their characters and interactions, it's plausible for Tom and Greg to start a sexual or romantic relationship with each other?" (the answer to which is yes btw). The question is - how would tomgreg going canon contribute to the overall themes of the show and the established arcs which are coming to a close in season 4? And, even more importantly - what are the ways in which tomgreg going canon would undermine existing themes and arcs?
Ultimately, I think a canon tomgreg relationship starting in the final season would distract from and undermine a lot of the other themes of the show. There are several themes and ideas which are distinctly reflected in Tom and Greg's relationship, some of which lose potency if their relationship becomes overtly romantic. For instance, the point the show is trying to make about how a certain brand of hyper-sexual and sexually violent masculinity degrades men's relationships with each other gets a bit lost and downplayed if it turns out that the primary reason Tom behaves the way he does towards Greg is that he's secretly in love with him. It's possible to write the relationship in such a way where Tom's behaviour isn't undermined by that, but it would need to be handled very delicately and a lot of people would simply miss the point. If they had more than one season left, I'd probably give the arc a greater likelihood of happening because there's more room to develop and maneuver the relationship in a way that would more clearly preserve those themes, but as it is I don't think they have the runtime for that.
I'm also anticipating Tom and Greg's individual arcs to take the shape of a corruption arc, and I think that arc becomes less potent on Greg's part if a romantic or sexual attraction to Tom is driving his choices. Again, there's a way to write it with more nuance, but I'm not confident that the show has the remaining runtime to pull that off with grace.
Finally, I think Tom leaving Shiv for Greg holds less emotional weight than Tom and Shiv splitting and Tom not having any other readily available options. If Tom and Greg have a relationship, and his position at Waystar falls apart, Tom theoretically has a fallback in Greg. If he doesn't, though, the stakes become so much higher for him.
There are some ways in which tomgreg going canon might add to the show thematically, which is why I do think it is a possibility. Obviously, there's a commentary to be made on the right's response to homosexuality, especially in the context of the certain ideal of masculinity they uphold. There's also commentary to be made about both Tom and Greg as characters and the power dynamics at play, and possibly even about sexual misconduct in the workplace if they want to tie it into the cruise scandal. There are ways to write it that would add new throughlines to themes of Succession. Personally, I don't feel that what might be gained by adding it outweighs what would be lost by adding it. But, at the end of the day I'm not in the writers room, and they may have accounted for other things I haven't considered. So, the fact that it's possible and plausible is what gives it a 1:6 odds for me.
I'm assuming what you're referring to with the betrayal plotline is my long-standing theory that at the end of the show Tom will betray Greg, and he'll go to jail. I held to that really firmly for a long time, and.... I'm not quite ready to throw it away yet. I still think it's a strong possibility that would work thematically. But a lot of that hinged on Logan, specifically, and since I'm now strongly suspecting that Logan will die early in the second half of the season, and I suspect the Tom and Greg running through the newsroom clip is late-season (tied to the election), I'm not so sure. I think Tom betraying Greg is still a strong possibility, but not as strong as I thought it was before we got more info about season 4.

ranking of bcs season 5 episodes based on how sexy i found them
10. Namaste dir. & writ. Gordon Smith
good ep, not sexy. jimmy commits his first hate crime against the dandy howard hamlin. hostile work environment at los pollos. the return of the uncomfortably stereotypical thugs that beat up mike. very let down because gordon smith has written some of bcs’s sexiest episodes in past seasons, including gloves off, chicanery, & something beautiful. the car chase intercut with lyle cleaning the fryer was pretty sexy tho. 2/10
9. Dedicado a Max dir. Jim McKay, writ. Heather Marion
this ep ranks so low because of what it could have been. was expecting it to be the sexiest episode, but was given very little of what was promised. the fountain was sexy, scheming kim was sexy, any invocation of revenge is sexy. that’s about it. 2.5/10
8. Wexler v. Goodman dir. Michael Morris, writ. Thomas Schnauz
first we’ve seen of nacho in a long time, but as usual it’s not nearly enough. he is reunited with mike, giving him the opportunity to play a bargaining chip for the first time in two seasons, which is sexy of him, but also reminded me of the how little he’s done since he became fring’s dog. nacho being underutilized is not sexy. (i could go on a whole rant about the poker chip we’ve seen nacho fiddling with a few times during different collection scenes, but i don’t think i quite understand it enough). kim suffers the worst day of her professional career because jimmy decided he knew what she wanted instead of listening to her. not sexy. lalo getting arrested was, of course, very sexy. 4/10
7. Magic Man directed by Bronwen Hughes, written by Peter Gould
sexy episode, but it all rests on the shoulders of lalo, nacho, & gus (+ a very timid domingo-- i’m into that). the mcwexler stuff just made me sad. lalo’s lounging in el michoacáno with his blue loafers kicked up? much appreciated. lalo and nacho constantly calling each other “man”? nice! the sit down between lalo and gus was very sexy, but the sexiest part of this episode for me was the trap house, especially the beginning sequence. loved the scene starting from inside the car with some great tunes, the camera following the meth down the drainpipe, lalo’s erratic driving and his refusal to acknowledge arlo, the power that nacho has demonstrated by arlo shutting up when he gets out of the car, the slightly shaky camera work in this moment, nacho leaping up those stairs and then pounding on the door before gently telling mouse it’s okay. all incredibly sexy! 6/10
6. JMM dir. Melissa Bernstein, writ. Alison Tatlock
pretty fucking sexy for production legend melissa bernstein’s directorial debut.  not only is it the first bit of substantial lalo content in a while, it’s the debut of jorge de guzman! the shot of him from the shoulders down with the focus on his tattoo? sneaking a phone in so he can tell nacho to burn down los pollos? the arson itself? very, very sexy. vague allusions to what went down in santiago? frustrating, but sexy. kim and jimmy consummating the most ill-advised marriage ever authorized by the state of new mexico? sexy, (especially kim’s hair). lydia rodarte-quayle! “shanked and shivved and whatnot.” that was a very sexy suggestion, lydia, keep ‘em coming! 7/10
5. Bagman dir. Vince Gilligan, writ. Gordon Smith
vince gilligan’s triumphant and very sexy return. the shoot out! the time lapse of the clouds while jimmy and mike walk along at a normal speed! “my wife” & “mrs. goodman!” and of course, the sexiest thing of all, the meeting between kim and lalo. gordon smith redeemed himself with this one. despite the piss-drinking, a very sexy episode indeed. 7.8/10
4. The Guy For This dir. Michael Morris, writ. Ann Cherkis
a very, very sexy ep! a swarm of ants set to yodeling isn’t in itself sexy, but i respect the symbolism and the bold creative choice. but then! the garage scene! imo this was the sexiest scene of the season. everything from the blocking to the lighting, not to mention the Acting. i’ve rewatched that scene many, many times. other sexy things about this episode: kim yelling at acker, kim opening up, nacho’s lounging-at-home-watching-soccer outfit, amber & jo, the one genuine smile nacho has all season (at the beginning of a devastating conversation with his father), lalo making jimmy and nacho watch him drive his car, “you’ll make time!”, nacho’s signature car-leaning, & “once you’re in, you’re in.” 8/10
3. 50% Off dir. Norberto Barba, writ. Alison Tatlock
look: i can admit that this hole ranking system is heavily dependent on how much nacho & lalo there was in an episode. this episode started with a home invasion at casa de varga so that gus could intimidate nacho in his underwear and ended with nacho rolling up on jimmy and then making him drop his mint chip in the street. and in between? the poker game. the birth of ocho loco/krazy-8. THE PARKOUR. “ignacio varga, eres un chingon.” the small expression of pride on nacho’s face when lalo says “it’s your call.” nacho finally accepting food from lalo, only to find it’s a trap! lalo using his own brand of the lie detector to make nacho offer to kill his oldest friend. dear god! this ep marked the explosion of the eduardo “lalo” salamanca/ignacio “nacho” varga tag on ao3. it’s an inspiring kind of sexiness. mike’s story was compelling, but a boner-killer. 8.9/10
2.  Bad Choice Road dir. & writ. Thomas Schnauz
ah! the something stupid callback! jimmy falling to his knees when he finally gets a signal! kim crying! jimmy’s trauma! the godfather reference with the oranges! (and no, i didn’t pull that out of my ass. peter gould mentioned it on the podcast) the care-taking, despite kim having every right to be furious with jimmy! the tender and heartbroken look on lalo’s face when he leaves the nursing home! lalo impatiently ordering his new chauffeur nacho around! the way lalo stands when nacho drops him off at the well! how happy nacho is to finally be rid of lalo for just 3 seconds before lalo gets back in the car! the lalo leap! the final scene! rhea claiming her emmy! but ultimately what’s so sexy about this ep is how well it encapsulated the ethos of the show. i’m still salty about the dinner party (???) with lalo, nacho, and nacho’s girlfriends getting cut, tho. 9/10
1. Something Unforgivable dir. Peter Gould, writ. Peter Gould & Ariel Levine
i don’t consider it the best episode of the season (that would be bagman), nor is it my favorite (that would be 50% off), but imo it is the sexiest episode of bcs yet. slippin’ kimmy! the finger guns! the kansas city royals shirt! kim laughing in howard’s face! the post-coital mcwexler scheming! and of course every single scene in mexico! nacho’s forced smiles! lalo’s unmitigated excitement at returning home! “nachito!” lalo’s despicable but still somehow sexy attitude toward that poor kid ciro! the scene where he’s fixing the car! lalo’s praise of nacho! lalo being the life of the party! everyone adoring him expect for juan bolsa! lalo’s party shirt! nacho’s tough but respectful chain-over-a-fully-buttoned-shirt-cause-it’s-time-to-meet-the-don look! nacho spelling out exactly what he wants! lalo closely watching nacho and don eladio! the intimate, late-night fireside conversation! the beautiful emotional asymmetry of that scene! a man who is finally ready to allow himself to trust someone choosing the wrong person! (in other words: lalo lowkey trying to get laid while nacho’s actively trying to facilitate his assassination!) nacho being the resourceful little bitch we all love! lalo immediately blaming poor ciro! (seriously, what is the story there??) the frying pan! the fucking tunnel! lalo kneeling over that dying hitman, peeling off the mask that’s melted to his face, and gently telling him “esta bien” ! lalo limping out of his estate with murder in his eyes, ready to hunt down the only man not carrying the Salamanca name he’s ever trusted! if this ep had included nacho regaining a shred of agency over his situation, it could have a perfect score. 9.9/10

I know it's kinda early for Halloween asks (by about 2 days until October) but here's a kinda Halloween themed ask for ya. It involves Kijo and though I kinda find her as my favourite I'll get to the point... It's Hallows' Eve and maybe for this one night a year Kijo could turn a nerdy 5 foot 11 guy with a 9 inch penis dressed up as a wizard or knight gets turned into a slutty short curvy goblin girl with big curves on the rear, hips, ass, breasts and lips.
There was a scream, then a crash. The knife tumbled into a patch of weeds, and the assailant ran. The boy and the woman dusted each other off and stood, alone in the park.   “Good thing you came along when you did, Kid. That crazy guy was going to shiv me,” Kijo said. It wasn’t wholly uncommon. Her…particular brand of massage tended to make people a little miffed. She wasn’t unprepared for such encounters however, she was very well practiced in Karate. There were no belts when she finished her training, but she was far above red belt status. Still, she had to appreciate the humor in the situation. A betitted former customer holder her at knifepoint, then a brave young knight rescued her. “I’m sorry about your costume, you seemed to put in quite a bit of effort on it.”   “It’s no problem at all, I mean I did but it’s okay. Honestly, I can’t believe I just did that. I’ve never done anything like that before. Just barreling into somebody? I guess the costume is rubbing off on me,” Melvin said. It was the time of year for escapism, for fantasies to run wild and for all reservations to disappear. Melvin certainly had a lot of them, but none involved actually stopping an assault in progress. He was barely an adult, barely out of high school, bullying and isolation still fresh in his mind. He loved Halloween, the one time of year he didn’t have to be himself. But even with that freedom, he still couldn’t bring himself to be who he really wanted to be.   “I’m sorry, my problems ended up ruining your holiday,” Kijo said.   “It’s ok, really! I was just planning on a dumb party. It would’ve been a disaster anyway, I’m not the party type, as I’m sure you can tell,” Melvin said. Kijo took a good look at the boy. Pasty, scrawny, comely enough. His plastic and foam knight armor was fragmented and broken beyond repair. But her eyes could see much more than that. Her profession afforded her countless opportunities to see the human form. There were few she wouldn’t call beautiful. This boy’s wasn’t all he seemed. His hips were more prominent than most his age, and it wasn’t from fat. That came from exercise, but the rest of his lithe body was forsaken in that regard. His waist was tiny, adherence to a strict diet. This boy had potential.   “I don’t have much in the way of money, but I’d love to repay you. How about a massage?”
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, I don’t need a reward or anything,” a stripped Melvin said. He wasn’t sure just how he’d let himself be dragged here. He hated it, but he had never been touched by a woman before. Too many nerves, too much self-doubt. But now he was half-naked and a woman was offering to touch him everywhere. His hands worked furiously to cover his pitched tent.   “I want to, young man. I’m not in the habit of leaving debts unpaid. Besides, I have a good feeling that you’re going to find this to be transformative,” Kijo said. Her hands lathered in a very rarely used blend of lotions. Her red painted nail turned on a playlist of smooth jazz music. “Just relax, let me repay your kindness,” Kijo said. She placed her hands on his chest, gently guiding him to her table. The lights were low, candles were lit, and the music moved Melvin to Kijo’s rhythm.
Melvin’s breath was erratic and tense as Kijo’s hands tread along his skin. His eyes were pinched shut, a part of him terrified that this was all a dream and at any moment would become a nightmare. His hands still covered the front of his trousers, his aching cock harder than its ever been. But Kijo grabbed his arms, smiling. “Don’t worry, I’ve seen a barrel of pickles in my day kid.” She pulled the hands away, and a sound of true shock escaped her lips. “Goodness! I had no idea you were…well, so well endowed,” Kijo said. Melvin’s cheeks shifted to crimson. He didn’t hate his cock, but to him, it always seemed so out of place on his skinny frame. Kijo grabbed his pants, and in a single practiced motion tugged them free. Kijo smirked, Melvin seemed to prefer going commando in his costume. “This may warrant some special attention later,” she said. Melvin turned even redder, in more than one place. He had to keep his eyes closed, no matter what. This was already the closest to sex he had ever imagined he’d get. It didn’t help at all that the dress she wore was incredibly low cut and hugger her hips so tightly he could see the lining of her thong. As long as he kept his eyes closed, this wouldn’t end in humiliation and a stained dress.
Her hands were incredible, Melvin thought. So soft, so tender. They wandered over every inch of his body, save his cock. He indeed was grateful for this. He was always so nervous and filled with tension. As Kijo’s hands moved about him all that disappeared. He felt lighter, calmer, even somehow happier. Melvin lost all sense of time under Kijo’s care. For all he knew it was Christman time. She also worked his face and ears into a state of total relaxation. Then when she lowered her hands to his ass, and pressed her lips to his, he had no idea how he managed to hold back.   “Almost done, but I think one more part of you needs a little attention,” Kijo said, breaking the kiss. Even as her hands slid down his sides they continued their manipulations. Kijo’s hand gripped Melvin’s puffed-up cock, then for the first time in his life, Melvin felt the moist tongue of a woman wrapped around his dick. Melvin gasped cutely, but he held his tongue. He wasn’t going to lose an opportunity like this. He wasn’t much for bragging, but he was still impressed that Kijo was able to take his full length into her mouth. The pleasure he felt was so intense he could feel it tingle in his fingertips. He began to squirm on the table, his movements feeling different that he thought they should. He dragged in some places where he shouldn’t have, and didn’t even touch the table in others.  But the mouth working his cock begged all his attention and he gripped the table with arms shorter than he remembered as a thunderous climax began growing inside him.
Kijo continued to sink down on Melvin’s cock. Each drag felt shorter and shorter to Melvin, but the nuke of pleasure descending inside him was obliterating his senses. Then his mind and body went over the edge when he felt Kijo’s tongue penetrate his body. His back arched and his eyes flew open, only to be obscured by silver hairs. His scream of ecstasy was high and unquestioningly adorable. “OH MY GOD!!” Melvin screamed. He panted, finally feeling more weight on his chest than ever before. Kijo lifted her head and licked the sweet nectar from her lips. “Not bad, a little outside my usual tastes, but it is the season after all. Would you like to see?” Kijo said. Melvin rubbed his throat as Kijo washed her hands and fetched an ornate hand mirror and handed it to him. Melvin reached out and saw his hand through silver strands, his green-skinned hand. He lunged for the mirror, upsetting his seat on the table. His motion tumbled him off, and he fell a foot further than he was used to. He landed on his hands and knees, and an enormous weight on his chest pulled him further to the ground. He saw breasts dangling from his chest, pale green tits, big ones. He looked up and met the mirror, and the face inside.
He was beautiful. Really beautiful. He had a cute, sexy face with pointed ears. His teeth were a little bit sharper, and jutted from the bottom of his mouth. His hair was long enough to brush his shoulders, but wild and unkempt. He abandoned the mirror and explored himself. His hips were outrageous, his waist was tiny, and he was so short he was barely above Kijo’s belt line. His fingernails were short but pointed. Somehow, he became some kind of orc, or a troll or—   “A goblin, in case you were wondering.”   “What?” Melvin said.   “A goblin, I turned you into a goblin-girl. You’re welcome.”   “But, I didn’t ask for this.”   “Most people don’t. But it was because of me your costume was ruined, so I gave you another one.”   “But—”   “Listen, I have been a masseuse a long time. And you aren’t the first person to have a wild time under my care. I could tell there was something in you, even if you didn’t know it yet. But I think you do. I’m a good judge of character after all. Now you can go to that party of yours and really live it up for the first time in your life. And when you’re finished, just come back to the parlor and I’ll fix your ears and your teeth and that lovely skin of yours. I’ll even turn you back into a boy, if that’s what you really want, of course.” Melvin grabbed the mirror again and looked at his face. It was nothing like his old one. It didn’t have his acne, or the scar from his boy-scout days by his chin. He didn’t need his glasses to see anymore, and everything was cute looking. But as he looked, all he could see was him. Rubbing a solitary tear from his eye, he said: “I’d like that very much, thank you.” He tried to embrace Kijo, but his chest made that a problem. They separated and shared a friendly chuckle. Kijo located a uniform that a former new employ had…damaged after an argument with the Madam. It was in tatters, but Melvin said that the tattered look helped fit the primitive motif. Kijo waved as Melvina made her way into the world, strutting her hips as she always practiced in secret.
The End. Hope Y’all like it!

The Best 26 SaaS & Subscriptions Podcasts to Listen to in 2021
You may have had a friend or a peer mention their newfound passion for podcasts. Or that person might be you, and it’s totally understandable. Podcasts have been around for quite some time, but only recently have they started to gain tremendous popularity, and that is because they are such a convenient way to share and retrieve content.
Lately, people have become more and more focused on multitasking and aiming to finish as many tasks as possible in a small amount of time. And, to state the obvious, they’ve become very proficient in doing so.
Taking this into consideration, it’s not surprising that one of the main reasons why podcasts have become so popular is their biggest advantage: being able to listen to them anywhere, anytime, and via any medium.
That means you can listen to a podcast while you’re on the go, finishing up your tasks, or out on a walk, just by hitting the play button on your smartphone, computer, or tablet. The best of both worlds! Staying informed and up to date with new trends from the SaaS industry and learning new strategies has never been easier than now.
According to SEMRush, 2021 holds the record for hours spent listening to podcasts, with 15 billion hours compared to 12 billion hours just two years ago. And the year hasn’t even ended yet! And Statista’s research shows that by the year 2023, the number of monthly podcast listeners in the United States will likely hit 164 million.
SaaS and Subscription podcasts offer a wide range of opportunities for discovering new ideas, staying up to date with trends, and even learning new insights and tips from the experts who host or are interviewed for the shows.

The cracks in BJP’s dual approach, writes Rajdeep Sardesai - columns
Tumblr media
It is not without irony that just days after the long-pending Ayodhya verdict was delivered by the Supreme Court, the Shiv Sena broke its long-standing alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Sena-BJP tie-up is the original Hindutva alliance, forged in the high noon of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the late 1980s. Without the demolition of the Babri Masjid, and its aftermath, it is highly likely that neither party would have been a serious contender for power in Delhi or Mumbai. So, does the messy break-up mark the end of militant Hindutva politics as a potent instrument for political benefit, or does it reaffirm “opportunism” as the most durable ideological “ism” in politics? The BJP won a massive mandate in the general election, relying on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal and a “trishul” of muscular nationalism, barely concealed majoritarianism, and well-targeted welfarism. In Maharashtra, the BJP-Sena alliance won 41 of the 48 seats and was leading in as many as 230 assembly segments. If they couldn’t repeat their success in the Vidhan Sabha, it shows that local issues often trump a pan-India agenda in a state election. Take for example, the contentious temple-mosque dispute in Ayodhya. It may have galvanised the BJP’s core voter, but its resonance was always both socially and geographically limited, and to an extent, time-barred too. It initially made the BJP a “20%-plus” party, but the great leap to becoming the dominant national party has only happened in the last decade. The doubling of the BJP’s vote share from 18% in the 2009 general elections to over 37% in 2019 is a reflection of the decline of the Congress and the ascent of Modi. The incremental vote to the BJP didn’t come from its allegiance to a Ram Mandir, but from the hope and trust in Modi’s leadership and the growing frustration with the national alternatives. In the Modi era, the BJP has attempted to ride on twin chariots, pushing the narrative of economic growth while retaining an unapologetic commitment to the core issues of Hindutva. Where an Atal Bihari Vajpayee sought to build a consensus on ideological issues, Modi, and his key lieutenant, Amit Shah, have felt no such compunctions. Within six months of Modi 2.0, the government has scrapped Article 370, obtained the court sanction to build a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and criminalised triple talaq as a possible step towards implementing a broader Uniform Civil Code. An amended Citizenship Act that discriminates between communities is also firmly on its agenda. With State power used to promote overt religiosity, the Modi-Shah-led BJP has sent out an unambiguous message: India’s Hindu identity is now effectively mainstreamed and is no longer a fringe phenomenon. And yet, while the chariot of majoritarian nationalism strides forward remorselessly, the other chariot of growth-development is now beginning to stall and sputter. The dream of a $5 trillion economy is now being pitted against the reality of a faltering growth engine, a serious job crisis, a stressed banking system, and a general lack of confidence in the investor community. Rather than admit to the scale of the problem, the government has chosen to treat the economy with a cavalier disregard of institutional checks and balances. So when a “leaked” National Statistical Office (NSO) report revealed troubling data on consumer spending and falling rural demand, the instinctive reaction was to junk the data altogether. This practice of either fudging figures, or hiding them, suggests that the government is deeply insecure when shown the mirror. This is also perhaps why the government seeks refuge in its political calculus, rather than get tied to the more arduous task of getting the economy back on track. Politics affords the luxury of astute headline management, quite apart from keeping the citizen in a thrall of constant emotional engagement. If government sources are to be believed, the build-up to a grand Ram Temple will be just as impressive with a shilanyas planned around Ram Navmi next year. The belief seems to be that the voter will be so engrossed in Ram bhakti that concerns over roti will matter less. And if that doesn’t work, there is always the Sangh Parivaraffiliate, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, to step up its demands for “liberating” Kashi and Mathura next. But this brand of populist politics driven by the fervour of religious nationalism has its limits. The recent events in Kashmir have damaged the Modi government’s global image and commitment to democratic rights. The Sena’s revolt, howsoever opportunistic, has confirmed that Hindutva alone is no longer a glue that binds. And the economic crisis can no longer be masked by clever slogans and catchwords. In the circumstances, the government may soon need a new formula to attract both its allies and the floating voter. Post-script: On the very first day of the winter session of Parliament, the Sena staged a walk-out over the issue of farmer distress. A Sena back-bencher MP quipped: “Pehle kisan, Phir Bhagwan Ram! (First the farmer, then lord Ram).” Clearly, the times have changed. Rajdeep Sardesai is a senior journalist and author.

SaaS and Subscription podcasts offer a wide range of opportunities for discovering new ideas, staying up to date with trends, and even learning new insights and tips from the experts who host or are interviewed for the shows.
