Quintus and Martius, returning from this “gaping hollow of the earth” (2.3.249) to receive a “worse end than death” (2.3.302), now “speak” back to their father, the silent threats of their severed heads serving as a shocking and brutal reminder that Titus’s “warlike hand” failed in Rome long before it was cut from his body.
