hi Anna! I'm that anon you used to chat with. hru? you might have inspired me to pursue screenwriting, I'd love to know the logistics and everything because I think that's what I want to do! talking to you about writing and hypnotizing about bridgerton was fun but I do think I could do it as a job and it was thanks to you, so truly thank you! hope everything is well, much love ๐Ÿ’•
Hey, nonnie! I'm doing pretty well (and am back to posting about Bridgerton, as you can see). I feel really honored that I've inspired you so much. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Screenwriting is such a joy and I'm so glad you love it so much, too! I'm still in the middle of getting my degree on it so my own experience is quite limited. But what I can speak to is that having previous experience writing goes a long way.
Learning how to write scripts is its own beast, just like learning any other type of writing is, so having something like grammar down really well can help a lot. It's one less thing you have to really worry about while learning screenwriting, you know? It can be really hard but I do find it so much easier in a lot of ways than writing prose because a script nixes all the bulk.
Screenwriting, especially writing for a TV show, is part of a collaborative process. So while you have a story you're telling, the script will get handed off to the cast and crew to leave their own marks on it. It's all about saying as much as possible in the least amount of words when you're writing a script to make room for everyone else's contributions.
When I first started, I thought I'd be really bad at comedies and horrors but in reality it's not that simple. I suck at writing for episodic shows because my forte is character work, which is best shown through character arcs across multiple episodes. But I learned to leverage my love of character analysis to come up with ideas that I wanted to explore about characters and then create individual plots for episodes to explore them.
Bottom line is write often, no matter the quality. Watch loads of movies and TV shows. Something you'll encounter if you do go ahead with screenwriting is something called a "spec script," which is short for a speculative script. Spec scripts are episodes you write (mostly as practice) for TV shows that already exist. Also reading scripts helps to learn what makes a good script! Brokeback Mountain is a great movie but I also cried just reading the script because it's that good.
