General

David is a half-blood wizard; born to a wizard father (George Nolan) and a muggle mother (Ruth Shepherd). Fearing for his pureblood family’s reputation if he chose to remain with Ruth, George instead parted ways with her - however, unwilling to abandon his son and heir, he separated the twins at birth and raised James as a Nolan in the wizarding world, whilst David lived in the muggle world as a Shepherd. The twins, however, saw each other two or three times a year at Ruth’s demand, so David wasn’t ignorant to the wizarding world growing up.

Knowing the twins would soon be heading to school, George paid Ruth and David a visit to suggest that David legally take his surname instead of his mother’s, implying that it would lend him a certain degree of respect since the Nolans were a well-known pureblood family. Disliking the implications but wanting to smooth David’s way as much as possible, Ruth agreed.

David’s wand is made from blackthorn wood, with a dragon heartstring core, measuring at just over ten inches. His patronus takes on the shape of a lionness (which prompts jokes regarding his House).

School

Upon his entry to Hogwarts, David was sorted into Gryffindor, the Hat taking note of his natural courage, loyalty, and heart - but also seeing further to the occasionally reckless, impulsive behaviour he fell victim to. Since he had already befriended fellow Gryffindor-sorted Liam Jones, this was a welcome result, although he would have been happy with any House. David never saw the school as ‘Houses’, easily blurring the lines between them and befriending people based only on their individual personalities.

He instantly excelled himself in Charms and Herbology, and later Defence Against the Dark Arts. In his second year he joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a chaser - by the time he left, he had taken on the role of Captain, too. David was also a prefect for Gryffindor.

His ultimate goal was to go into teaching, with a potential future goal of one day becoming headmaster. As such, he applied himself to his studies with more determination than most of his fellows - although, on occasion, Quidditch proved to be a bit too much of a distraction. 

Post-School

David continued towards his goal of becoming a professor, though his progress was momentarily halted when an uprising of blood supremacists threatened the peace of the wizarding world. Alongside a team of aurors, he signed himself up to a resistance movement with the intention of stopping the uprising before more people fell victim. He wasn’t at all surprised to discover that his twin had been caught up in the uprising, though he was disappointed.

After the uprising had been stamped out and peace restored, David resumed his studies, and eventually earned himself a place at Hogwarts, filling a recently vacated position as a Charms professor. He is also later appointed as Head of Gryffindor House.*

As a teacher, David is quick to correct any stereotypes about each of the Houses at the school, and encourages his students to see beyond the colour of their robes. Whilst he makes a point to look out for the muggle-born and half-blood students, he also keeps a close eye on any purebloods whose families were part of the uprising, knowing that judgments and prejudices will be hanging over them in the eyes of others.
