Cost Explanation

I have attempted to make the cost of my paperback book as affordable as possible. The reality is that self-publishing is a difficult process and does not favour newbies. It costs about 29AUD to print a physical copy so pricing the book at 32.99AUD actually only gives me about 4AUD in profit per copy sold through retailers. Depending on the retailer, they may add an additional $1-3 to my set price which goes to their own profit system. That is to say I have no control over how much a retailer marks up my book.

I'm not writing books to make money - that's why I went to uni to do a second degree to get a job that actually pays the bills (and eventually pay off my massive student debt 🥲). If i had complete control I would sell the book for much cheaper but unfortunately it is the case that this is the cheapest I can make it with it still being viable. If there is demand shown for the book, i.e. people are buying physical copies, then the retailer's price may go down. Of course given the cost of things these days, I'm not expecting to sell a whole lot.

However, for me to keep being able to list my book for sale, I have to pay VenX a yearly subscription fee of $385 (including GST). VenX is an offshoot of the publishing house Ventura Press and is the Australian company that helped me through the self-publishing process. Due to our agreement, if I do not pay the yearly subscription fee, they will remove my book from being available to purchase online. So any profit I get from sales will go back into making sure I can cover this subscription fee.

Given I'll only make about $4 back with each sale through a retailer, it is actually better if e-books are purchased as the cost to print is not a factor.

P.S. If you can't afford a physical copy and really want one, please DM me. I plan to send a few copies to libraries, so provided your local library is willing to accept books into their collection, I can arrange for that soon.
