Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce knows more than anyone about the sacrifices needed to become a seven-time world champion.

But missing her son Zyon’s first nursery sports day in April hit particularly hard for the Jamaican sprint superstar.

“He goes to daycare and I missed his first race because I was in Grenada for my first meeting [where Fraser-Pryce opened her 2019 campaign with a sluggish 11.20 seconds] so it was very painful for me,” she said.

“My husband was at the race and he video-called me – everybody was excited, shouting ‘here comes baby rocket!’ He just stood there when they started the race, so I was like ‘What’s happening? Go! Run Zyon, run!’

“I was screaming and having a lot of fun and my husband won the parent race so we salvaged some of it. I’ll definitely do that race one day – warm up, spikes and all. I’m waiting for it now.”

It is difficult to think of a track and field athlete who personifies happiness quite as much as Fraser-Pryce, who is arguably Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith’s main threat in 100m.

Fraser-Pryce, the 2019 joint world leader over 100m, cites the distractions and joys of both motherhood and her beauty business as the reasons behind her renewed level of fitness, dazzling smile and infectious laugh.

She has returned to athletics after her maternity leave in 2017 with a more relaxed attitude to the sport, and the 32-year-old is in a promising position to add to her global medal collection at the World Championships in Doha, which start on Friday.

Having scorched to 2008 Olympic 100m glory at the tender age of 21, the 5ft tall Fraser-Pryce went on to retain her Olympic crown in 2012, before claiming bronze at the 2016 Games to become the first woman in history to win three consecutive Olympic 100m medals.

She is also the first woman to win three World Championship 100m titles, courtesy of victories in 2009, 2013 and 2015, and is the fourth-fastest 100m runner of all time with a blistering 10.70, which she clocked in 2012.

For all that she has achieved on the track, the Kingston native says her greatest achievement is her son.

“He gives the energy in my life and makes everything easier, and he gives me that extra motivation to keep going,” Fraser-Pryce said.

“Motherhood is time-consuming and a lot of work but I have a great team – my husband and I definitely see eye to eye on what’s important and getting the balance right between family life and track, and we make it work and make time for each other.

“I get home from practice and sometimes my son is exhausting but it’s something I wouldn’t trade for anything else because he’s actually made me better at what I do and a lot more relaxed by remembering that after a race, there’s still more to life.”

Fraser-Pryce missed the last World Championships in London in 2017, with Zyon born the day after the women’s 100m final.

A mere 11 months after giving birth, Fraser-Pryce sped to a swift 10.98 to rank 10th in the world last year, and she says her renewed enjoyment for the sport is thanks to her son.

“He brings the excitement to my training and it’s a huge blessing to have my son watch me,” she said, having recently released a children’s book called ‘I am a promise’, based on the life lessons she has learned as an athlete.

“Zyon goes to the track – he loves to get in the long jump pit with sand in his hair as I run by, and all I can tell my team-mates is ‘don’t let him run across the track’ because he’s pretty fast. He makes training lighter for me and it’s fun.

“I once put my medals on him to try and get a picture and he was just like ‘No!’ because they’re heavy and were weighing him down – but give him a football and he’s all over it.”

Targeting both the 100m and 200m events in Doha next week, Fraser-Pryce will face stiff opposition from triple European sprint champion Asher-Smith and her Jamaican team-mate Elaine Thompson – the Olympic champion in both disciplines and with whom she shares the 100m world leading time of 10.73.

Fourth in the 2017 world 200m final, 23-year-old Asher-Smith caused a surprise by beating Fraser-Pryce over the shorter event in Brussels earlier this month, during a superb season which has also brought her additional Diamond League wins over 200m in Doha and Stockholm, and impressive runner-up spots in Rome (100m), Lausanne (100m), London (100m), Birmingham (200m) and Zurich (200m).

The 27-year-old Thompson has been victorious in Rome (100m), Paris (100m) and London (200m), in addition to claiming the Jamaican national titles in both events this summer.

Asher-Smith finishes second in women’s 100m final

Fraser-Pryce – a world 200m champion in 2013 – has enjoyed victories over 100m in Lausanne and London, and remains confident despite the younger generation snapping hard at her heels.

“I’ve been doing this a very long time and I’m getting older, so it’s a real privilege to be able to run with such great ladies,” she said.

“But I also always make sure I bring the fire and jump right in – Doha is a big one for me and I’m enjoying each day and the process, and trusting that God has something great in store.”

Whatever happens on the track in Doha, Fraser-Pryce will be sure to make a separate statement. She is known for frequently changing the colour of her hair during the track season and takes great pride and enjoyment from it, especially at major championships.

Having showcased pink hair at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, she then went on to launch her own hair business. She sported a green hairstyle at the 2015 edition in Beijing and has since opened a salon.

“My coach says I like hair more than running and he’s right because I get so excited to colour my hair, especially for championships,” she said.

“I’m excited for the colour I’ll wear for Doha and sometimes I get so into it all, I forget I’m going there to run.

“I have a hair line and shampoo, conditioner, soaps – the whole works. It’s a big passion for me, I believe that your hair’s an accessory and you can do so many things to it. I want to be able to accentuate the beauty of any woman no matter what you choose to do with your hair and at the same time, nourish what you have underneath your wigs, extensions or braids.

“Hair is definitely something that makes me happy and more bubbly, it brings out that glow in me.”

Colin Nagy, head of strategy at Fred & Farid, a global advertising agency, writes an opinion column for Skift on hospitality, innovation, and business travel. Today, he cites his personal favorites — not necessarily Skift’s — for top innovators in 2017.

It’s been an exciting year for travel and as this column has long argued: Where business travelers spend their money matters. There are brands that actually care about customer experience, and others seem to be driven only by cost cuts, earnings per share, and the bottom line.s

As we close out 2017, it is worth highlighting inspiring efforts in travel and hospitality. Here’s to the companies that are innovating, and doing the heavy lifting to make travel and hospitality inspiring.

Best Airline Lounges The lounge wars are heating up, and top carriers put a lot of time, effort and thought into pre-departure spaces. But no one has been doing it as well as Cathay Pacific. Noted designer Ilse Crawford nailed the aesthetic perfectly, with comfortable yet stylish chairs, deep woods, polished gold fixtures and the classic Cathay touches like a noodle bar.

All of the new lounges are wonderful, and special mention goes again to the Pier First lounge in Hong Kong for being absolutely superb in its hushed, residential, yet inspiring feel. A recent traveling companion remarked to me that she didn’t want to leave to get on the plane.

Best U.S. Domestic Airline It doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles, but I recently moved a good amount of transcontinental travel over to Alaska Airlines. The reason? The staff is superb. It is good value for money, and every touch point reflects people that care about their jobs, even down to how quickly your bags arrive.

Everything exceeds the standard of most U.S. carriers. The staff cares and it is apparent. Bonus points for having an easy to use frequent flyer program that allows for no-hassle redemptions on the likes of Cathay and Emirates.

Best Semi-Private Concept I love the Surfair concept. Subscribers can fly all they want within California, and now, Europe. The planes are great, the lounges are thoughtful, and with the rise of more people commuting to Europe because of Brexit, the airline’s recent move to London City Airport from Luton makes a ton of sense.

Best Airports This is a always a hot topic, and typically Changi gets the lion’s share of the votes, but my favorite airports are Hong Kong International Airport and Helsinki’s Vantaa. They are both easy to navigate, inspiring, and make me wish we could replicate them and pollinate them across the U.S.

Hong Kong’s hub, designed by Norman Foster, frames a range of international liveries and verdant hills in the distance beautifully. Helsinki feels distinctly Finnish from the signage to the floors and the stores that are selling Finnish products and not just the predictable global soulless chains.

Both are inspired hubs for international travel. In the U.S., I really love the vibe of Austin- Bergstrom International Airport. I It’s not the flashiest, but it just works in terms of easy security, friendly TSA and lounge staff, and just capturing the vibe of the music- and food- crazed city.

Best Car Rental Once you rent from Silvercar, it is hard to go back to a legacy car rental service. Everything is an Audi A4, with all rentals booked from a mobile app, and the experience is friction free on arrival.

Prices are reasonable you can now find the service in 17 markets across the U.S. Plus, the cars allow you some dignity and style for business travel on the road, as opposed to arriving in that Sonata from a bigger chain rental agency.

Best Business Class Product The Reverse Herringbone seat configuration flown by American and Cathay on their Boeing 777 300s has long been a favorite. But recent flights on a few Airbus A350s has me converted to the seats that Qatar and Cathay fly on this plane.

It is a reasonable approximation of the product mentioned above, however the added bonus of more humidity and lower cabin pressure on the Airbus product makes me feel better after a long flight. Which, when traveling for business, is a priceless commodity.

Best First Class Product This year was the year for Air France’s La Premiere, with the most seasoned, discerning travelers raving about every element of the experience from end-to-end. Bonus points for the privacy curtain instead of a hard, sliding door, and also the soft, residential hues in the cabin.

While the Middle Eastern carriers like Etihad have a lot of bling and perhaps more space, this product is capturing the hearts and minds of long-haul flyers for something different: some soul.

Best Night’s Rest on a Plane I’ve never slept better than on JAL’s First Class product, complete with a Japanese-made Airweave mattress. The bed is large and comfortable, and the linens are great.

Best Collaboration American and Casper came together with an inspired bedding collaboration. I like that a startup has paired up with a legacy carrier to improve passenger experience while also introducing more people to the brand. It’s smart and comfortable.

Best In-Flight Gear Nothing beats clothing from Outlier for long-haul travel. It makes gear that looks elegant, minimal, and discrete, but is made from technical fabrics that stretch, repel stains, and generally travel incredibly well. You can travel a lot lighter without having to bring a ton of things, and this is a founding principle of the brand. Also, Outlier’s merino wool shirts, hoodies and cardigans are incredible to take on the road.

Best New Boutique Hotel Tokyo’s new, 15-room boutique Trunk represents an inspired, creative offering in a town that needs more boutique hotels. The property dials in local culture well, and features a flea market with local artisans. The tricky part is finding room availability Trunk is in demand.

Best Bar Because of the geopolitical intrigue and the hushed conversations that happen there, not to mention a nicely made Martini, the bar at the Four Seasons in Doha is an elegant and must-visit venue. The old standby of Claridge’s Bar in London is a close runner up.

Best Hotel The best anticipatory service and incredible suites go to the Upper House in Hong Kong, which is year after year my favorite hotel in the world. General manager Marcel Thoma runs an incredibly tight ship, with a staff that genuinely cares deeply about customer experience. For more on that, read my interview. Every frequent traveler I know who has experienced it speaks in reverent terms and yearns to go back.

Best Hotelier Liz Lambert continues to amaze with her hotels. Her recent hotel opening, the San Cristobal in Todos Santos, north of Cabo San Lucas, weaves in inspired design with great community integration. She’s set to open a re-edit of the Phoenix in San Francisco very soon.

Everything about her work is inspiring, down to the products offered in each hotel’s custom shops.

Best Standard Room A recent stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong had me pondering the perfect, standard room setup. It was the ideal size and proportion. There was a wonderful seating and work area by the window, curtain partitions, a generous bathroom, and closet space. All of this was wrapped with some of the best service in the business, in a classic setting.

Airline Products to Lust After in 2018 Both Singapore and Emirates have released their version of new first class suites. There’s perhaps less ostentatious bling than before, but each offer an interesting vision into how the passengers in the front of the plane wants to fly.

Singapore offers a fully sized bed and a separate, reclining seat, while Emirates took inspiration from Mercedes into its completely overhauled cabin with neutral hues and a detail that will delight travelers. Among them is individual temperature controls at your seat.

Frequent flyers will be salivating to get their hands on both of these first class seats as they roll out.

World Athletics Championships: GB win men’s 4x100m semi-final in new world leading time

Dina Asher-Smith’s hopes of a third 2019 World Championships medal remained intact as both Britain’s 4x100m relay teams qualified for Saturday’s finals.

Britain’s men, the defending champions, made it through their heat with a world lead time of 37.56 seconds in Doha.

Britons Neil Gourley, Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman looked in good shape as they reached Sunday’s 1500m final.

USA’s Dalilah Muhammad set a world record for the second time this year as she won the women’s 400m hurdles final.

Following much scrutiny over the small crowds at the event, the Khalifa Stadium was almost full to capacity on Friday as the Qataris cheered on home favourite Mutaz Essa Barshim who defended his men’s high jump title.

Smooth progression for GB relay teams

Asher-Smith, the 200m champion and 100m silver medallist, will be brought into the quartet for the final after sitting out Friday’s heat.

She relied on Asha Philip, Imani-Lara Lansiquot, Ashleigh Nelson and Daryll Neita and they kept their composure to bring the baton safely around in a season’s best time of 42.25 seconds.

At the World Relays earlier in the year, Nelson was involved in a baton-exchange error, but her exchange with Neita, on the anchor leg, was faultless.

Neita told BBC Sport: “We’ve practised so hard. We’ve had an amazing camp coming into this. I feel like we’re moving away from the technical side and moving in to the trust.

“We all trust each other. I’m really proud of us and Saturday is going to be great.”

Jamaica’s quartet, which included 100m gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, won the heat in 42.11.

Defending champions USA won their heat to take their place in the final.

The British men’s team of Adam Gemili, Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake were also impressive as they won their race with clear distance between themselves and the Americans, who included 100m champion Christian Coleman and came third with Brazil second.

Gemili, fourth in the men’s 200m, told BBC Sport: “I’m actually good. I feel really fresh. It’s always an honour to come out with these guys. We were looking for redemption, especially myself and Zharnel, after what happened in the individuals.”

Great Britain captain Kilty added: “We knew the key to this was relaxation. I said to the lads at the start – this is one seamless effort of taking the baton round, and we’ve done that nicely We’re full of confidence, relaxed and ready to go again.”

Mitchell-Blake said: “Right now we’ve got to rewrite the history books and focus at what’s on hand right now.”

World Athletics Championships: History made as GB trio qualify for men’s 1500m final

In the men’s 1500m, Scots Gourley, Kerr and Wightman made history as it is the first time three British men have reached a 1500m final at a World Championships.

Gourley, 24, came third in the first semi-final and Kerr, 21, was fourth in the second with Commonwealth bronze medallist Wightman, 25, taking the final qualification spot as one of two fastest losers in three minutes 36.85 seconds.

There was only 0.35 seconds separating the fastest qualifier, Marcin Lewandowski of Poland, and Wightman, who told BBC Sport: “I still don’t believe it – there’s the ‘Q’ on the big screen. I made hard of work of that but it bodes well for the final that we all got through.”

Asked about three Scots progressing, Kerr said: “It’s fantastic. We’ve had a clean sweep in the British Championships in the last couple of years and it’s time for us to show up on the biggest stage.”

Norway’s European champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished third in the second semi-final to go through but brother Filip, a 2017 world bronze medallist, missed out after coming seventh in the first semi-final.

Dalilah Muhammad breaks women’s 400m hurdles world record to win gold

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Muhammad, 29, held off compatriot Sydney McLaughlin in a thrilling final, winning in 52.16 seconds – 0.04 faster than the time she set in July.

McLaughlin, 20, produced a brilliant late sprint to clock 52.23, which is the third fastest ever. Jamaica’s Rushell Clayton took bronze in 53.74.

The men’s 3,000m steeplechase was decided by a photo-finish as Kenya’s defending champion Conseslus Kipruto snatched gold from Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma.

Rio champion Kipruto, 24, who has only recently recovered from a stress fracture in his foot, won in eight minutes 01.35 seconds – 0.01secs ahead of the 18-year-old. Britain’s Zak Seddon finished 15th.

Kenya’s Kipruto wins gold in sensational steeplechase finish

The loudest cheers of the night were reserved for home favourite Barshim, who retained his title and won Qatar’s first gold with an effort of 2.37m.

The 28-year-old’s fitness was in question for these championships having ruptured ankle ligaments in July 2018 attempting to break Javier Sotomayor’s world record of 2.45m.

They were allayed when he cleared a season’s best of 2.29m in qualification before outjumping Russian silver medallist Mikhail Akimenko (2.35m) and his compatriot Ilya Ivanyuk (2.35m), both competing as Authorised Neutral Athletes, in the final.

In the men’s 400m final, Bahamas’ Steven Gardiner stunned favourite Fred Kerley of the USA to take gold in 43.48 seconds – the sixth fastest time in history.

Colombia’s Anthony Jose Zambrano was a surprise second in 44.15 and Kerley, who ran 43.64 in the summer, took bronze a further 0.02secs back.

Japan’s Toshikazu Yamanishi won the men’s 20km walk in one hour 26 minutes 34 seconds, with Russian Vasily Mizinov – another Authorised Neutral Athlete – second in 1:26.49 and Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom third in 1:27.00.

In temperatures of around 31C, Britain’s Tom Bosworth finished seventh in 1:29.34, but compatriot Callum Wilkinson was left near to tears after being disqualified.

Wilkinson, who led briefly around the 6km mark, was shown a fourth red card in the closing stages of the race.

In the women’s discus final, it was a Cuban one-two as Yaime Perez took gold with 69.17m.

Compatriot Denia Caballero clinched silver (68.44m) and Croatian’s Sandra Perkovic, a two-time Olympic and world champion, won bronze with 66.72m.
