Another commercial project completed for clients that we have been working with for over 20 years! The site has a large lake and  pedestrian walkway around the perimeter for staff to get away from their desks and enjoy. We were instructed to pollard mainly the willows on the site, of which there are many. Due to the nature of the business no noisy machines are allowed so all cutting was undertaken using battery chainsaws. Brash was stacked on site to enable weekend crews to visit and process the chip into the understorey of the hedgerow, providing a fresh mulch to help retain moisture and reduce the carbon footprint of moving woodchip around the country. Our powerful 4x4 quad bike was used to tow our woodchipping machine throughout the pedestrian pathway without causing damage to the pathway, ideal for park land or bridle path works. Our Quad is equipped with snow blade, winch and tow ball available for hire with one of our trained operators. As the year draws to an end we've completed our final project, which has been in the planning since August waiting for UK Power Networks to give us a date. It all came together like a well oiled machine with tracked access platform the first to arrive on site, well before school parents arrived to drop their kids off to the local school. Then our traffic management team set up 2 way traffic lights creating safe work zone. UK Power Networks eventually turned up and switched the overhead electricity supply off and we were good to go. Freezing temperatures and blue sky the team didn't waste any time working throughout the day to clear around power lines getting the trees well below the power cables to complete the job. Another very satisfied customer. Reflecting on the past year its certainly been challenging, what with the cost of living crisis putting even more pressure on trading and unexpectedly being served notice to quit our yard. This lead to some very stressful months clearing several tons of timber and woodchip to meet the imposed deadline whilst trying to maintain our normal business activities. Seasoned log deliveries continued despite the -8 degree freezing temperature, our trusty old telehandler still starts on the button and assists in loading the log bags. Thanks to our conscientious team who have worked so hard throughout the year, we even managed to enjoy a well earned weekly beer and support our local pub. The teams have been busy working days and nights during the last few weeks. The nightwork has been a particularly challenging project dismantling near on 100 roadside trees that were deemed dead, dying or dangerous and risk of falling into 70 MPH dual carriageway. Our night tree gangs gathered each night at our yard and travelled to site in convoy. Once our traffic management team gave the go ahead that lane 1 was coned off and closed to live traffic and IPV (impact protection vehicle) positioned to act as a buffer prior to our first section the tree gang then entered the work zone. We had our own mobile tower flood lights and lorry mounted access platform with lighting in the boom cage so the tree cutters had good all round light. The gangs worked through the night working consecutive week nights, including weekends getting off site for 05.00 hours each morning. It's been quite a task but the teams all worked so hard and got the job done in often very cold, wet, misty, typical December winter conditions - personal thanks to each and every one of the guys. We were instructed to carry out vegetation and some small tree clearance. The site was inspected by ecologists prior to our arrival to ensure no birds or wildlife would be harmed during the works. Having had the hottest summer on record it's so important to water trees in times of dry weather. We are fully licensed with our local water authority to draw water from street hydrants to ensure we meet the legal requirements and water our contracted street trees from April through to October each year. Sadly, there will be a lot of casualties this year - one seen circled in red in the photograph has died through lack of water and will start to shed dead branches causing a danger to life and property. We were instructed to remove this large willow tree which has caused significant subsidence resulting in structural damage to the adjacent building. We phased the operation by firstly removing the tree canopy and scaffold limbs. Secondly, we felled the remaining stem and finally ground the stump and removed excess arisings leaving the ground level with no trip hazards. Our micro crane made the job a whole lot easier - available to hire with an operator. It can lift 250kg at 9.5m and 1.1 tons at close side lift. Last week we worked on Sausage & Cider Festival in Central Park this week we're back in the park attending to a hanging fractured oak limb over the pedestrian pathway causing a hazard. The area was signed, coned and barrier taped off before we attempted to remove the torn limb. In addition to our day jobs this week we've had teams working evenings under cover of darkness with the help of mobile floodlights. We were invited to carry out vegetation clearance to make way for an extension of the cycle/pedestrian foot path from the city centre to the hospital main entrance. Due to the location within hospital grounds it was discussed and agreed works should be carried out during the evenings working from 19.00 to 23.00 hours avoiding the busy periods during the day time and reducing noisey works to a minimum. Our Method Statement included the use of manual controlled traffic lights to give priority to arriving and departing ambulances at the Accident and Emergency department. As we're currently in nesting bird season the site was carefully inspected to ensure no birds or wildlife would be harmed in the works. The team worked like a well oiled machine and everything went according to plan with minimum inconvenience to the hospital and local residents. Another job completed on time and on budget.
