What was: 'The Making of the Modern World' like in Year 10? Who/what was the teacher like, what did you study + learn, what was the workload + assignments like, overall opinions of the subject?
Hi sweetie,
We’re sorry for the late reply but it seems no one who did this subject is currently available. The teacher is Ms McAlpine who is extremely nice and very qualified for this subject! (She also teaches Revs ¾ for VCE) And from what i hear pretty much everyone loved the subject and found it interesting as well as beneficial. If you are interested in history definitely consider it. For the actual details you should consult the subject sheet you were given as the course could’ve changed slightly from when our year level did it.

Hey I was planning my vce subjects and I can’t choose between global politics and and history. From your experiences, what would be best based on difficulty and enjoyment?? Thank you!!! This blog is amazing and so helpful!
Hey,
Thank you for messaging us and we’re glad you’re finding this page helpful! As none of the FAM team has personally done both global politics (glopol) and history, we managed to ask two other Year 12’s for their advice on choosing between global politics and history. Here’s their take on it:
Krystal Ha:
“Hey!! Ok so I’m in Yr 12 and I did glopol last year In yr 11, without doing the 1/2. I have a bit of bias towards glopol because of that, but yeah I think both subjects are pretty similar. You don’t need to do the 1/2 for both (especially for glopol—I really don’t think the 1/2 is relevant and I did fine.) You also get excellent teachers for both (Ms Mc.Alpine for revs and Allan for glopol) and you need to know a lot of case studies inside out for both.
I don’t know about Ms Mc.Alpine though, but I really liked how Allan prepared us because all of the sacs were the same format as the exam, and we were doing preparation throughout the year.
I had a friend who did both history and glopol, and they found that glopol was harder since you had to keep up with current events. They also found the subject content a bit harder to keep up with.
So in summary—I think they’re pretty similar and you can do pretty well in both, but it really comes down to what you like more. If you enjoy glopol, go for it, especially since it’s got a bit of scaling upwards whereas revs goes down, but you have to really enjoy glopol because there is quite a bit of reading and stuff.
It also helps in glopol if you understand how world events work a bit already, and that kind of thing.
Feel free to email me at [email protected] and I can tell you what kind of things we did as well. Tl;dr they’re basically the same, but glopol is a little harder cos you have to keep up with current events and stuff. Also gives you better scaling though. Choose what subject you think you’ll enjoy most ”
Sam:
“Generally speaking, History is very content heavy and requires a lot of heavy lifting on your own. Global involves less memorising, but is very research orientated. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any more questions :)!”
Hope this helps!

Most popular VCE subjects? (Based on Fam leaders observation)
Hey anon,
The ones that are picked the most seem to be Methods and Chemistry as they’re both needed as prerequisite subjects for a lot of university courses. The ones that are liked the most though, we’d have to say Revs - history’s like a very fun neverending story, Accounting - very straightforward, and (apparently) you can do the work while watching a show, LOTEs - you can actually tell when you’re getting better, Global, Economics and Biology.

hey kelly! I am always very fascinated to see that you chose no maths/science subjects whatsoever for vce! how did you come to that decision, do you have any regrets and what is your fav subject and why? Do you think not doing any maths/science subjects will impact you in the future? And you obviously have a clear vision, what exactly is your plan for after school finishes? How will each subject you have chosen impact your life, why did you choose each one in particular?
Hey there!
I’m glad you’re interested knowing more about how I picked not to pick any math or sciences, and i hope my response can help you out!
I came to the decision that i didn’t want to do any math or science because they’re mainly  irrelevant to the courses in university I’d like to do and the potential future careers i want to pursue. I definitely don’t have any regrets about it, even if it’s going to mean i can’t do certain things, mostly because i have no interest in doing those things. Like you said i do have a very clear, or at least someone what clear, idea of what i want to do in the future, and it’s definitely something I’ve thought about before making my decisions. After highschool i want to do something similar or a double degree of arts (for the political, historical and theoretical aspects) and something more specific in the area of film/ tv production (ie: media, communications, etc). Then after that following careers in line with those areas.
The subjects that I’ve chosen for VCE are pretty much a reflection of things that i enjoy and fall into the same areas of things I’d like to study after high school. So revs covers my interests in history and politics, global politics and extended investigation (as I’m doing a question about politics)  covers politics, media covers my interest in filmmaking, and philosophy and literature cover my interest is different philosophical/ theoretical perspectives. I love each of these subjects so much and i enjoy all my classes, which makes it really hard to choose a favourite, but I’d have to go with media. It’s ultimately what i want to do most in my future, if I could make or work on films for the rest of my life I’d be so happy and fulfilled. In the subject I was given so much room to be independently creative, got to learn more about the kinds of techniques and influences that goes into filmmaking, and got to learn more about the industry as well.
Hopefully I’ve been able to help! Feel free to send me more questions too if you’d like :)

I really like the 'humanities' subjects but everyone says they're pointless in terms of clear future paths etc.
Hey there!
Honestly, just do what you love. You hear this a lot but it’s so true, and the assumption that the humanities are useless is a pretty false one as well. Humanities such as accounting, economics, etc can really help if you’re looking to do something in commerce, business, finance, marketing etc. Others such as global politics and history can find you working internationally, as a diplomatic, a historian, a journalist, a translator, a teacher, a writer, with the government, and so much more! Legal studies is often a subject people do as a precedent to becoming a lawyer or doing law in uni too. More than career options, you can learn so much about the history of our world, how it functions now, the reasons it does so in that way, you debate different theories and think incredible deeply about almost literally anything in the world. Overall, there are so many ways to find success and fulfillment from the humanities, and if you love them then you should continue them.Pursue what you want!!!
FAM Leader 1:  I chose Economics because I wanted to understand the finance reports on the news/ politicians talking about the economy. It was the best decision I made because I loved the subject and can now understand when people talk about economics. Just because the trend at Macrob is to do science-y kind of subjects doesn’t mean you have to do it to! Also, a great tip for year 12 especially, do the subjects you love. Sure I don’t really LOVE spesh but sometimes I enjoy it to an extent. VCE will be much more enjoyable if you enjoy your subjects and you’ll also want to study it more, so likely do better as well.
FAM Leader 2: I thought I just might add too, that as a person who’s only doing humanities and an art subject (philo, media, revs, global politics, extended investigation and lit) i feel that in no way am I’m stuck for career options. These last two years of vce in which i’ve done these subjects have been the best, and part of that is because i went with what i loved! And now i’m happy that i can continue to do them in my future - at uni and in my work.
Hopefully this helps!

Hey fam!! I was just wondering what your favourite subjects are/were and why? Is it because of the teacher, the content or just because you enjoy it!!! Thanks in advance just need some subject selection inspo
Hey there!
FAM Leader 1: Last year my favourite subject was Biology and it was because of all three things that you listed that I loved it so much! The content was super interesting for me, especially when we learnt about diseases as it’s so applicable to real life so I feel like what I was learning will definitely come into use at some point. It actually did, because a week before the diseases SAC I got sick so I literally doing active revision in my head every time I coughed or sniffed haha! Mr Maaser was also great, I was able to get all the help I wanted and needed, and our lessons were always engaging and fun (also because I had a nice class!). I guess it’s the combination of the content and classroom atmosphere that really let me enjoy it, and even now I’ve gone on to do Uni Extension for it so I really do love my Bio! :’)
This year my favourite VCE subject has been Economics, and it’s for basically the same reason as why I loved Bio. Economics can be applied to so many things in the world, when you buy and sell things, when you go on holidays, it’s related to the government/budget and it’s so applicable to real life. You also get to learn why money works and is used the way it does, and I feel like it gives you a new and useful perspective to the world. Mr Crowe is so helpful, you can always get things clarified and he makes sure you understand the content to a high level. The classroom atmosphere in Eco is also really good, personally I feel like everyone in the class is united and we all get on well so it’s always light-hearted but we get lots of stuff done. If you’re looking to expand your knowledge on the world, I definitely recommend Eco - it’s got its harder times especially near SAC period but you’ve got so much support around you, and the learning and enjoyment I’ve gotten out of the classes outweighs the stress during assessment period. :)
FAM Leader 2: I absolutely LOVED Media when i did it last year and it is definitely my favourite VCE subject! It was really because of a combination of the thing syou mentioned - not only is Mr Muir an amazing and interesting teacher, but the course work allowed you to be incredibly creative and also explore that crafting of a story and how media actually works. For me, filmmaking is what i love so if was a clear choice for me, and one of the things that drew me to it was that we got almost the entire year to create our own short film, and I’ve never had so much creative control over anything in school, or the ability to independently produce something as a real expression of myself.  There was never a moment in that class when i felt bored or like i was wasting time, instead I was always super engaged in learning and actually analysing films. Plus i always felt super ready for my SAC’s and the exam, mostly due to Mr Muir preparing us so well and really going through the different areas of study in a way we could really understand and become comfortable with. You always feel like you can go to him with questions, and due to the small classes media usually has you feel like a close nit group with the other students. The class environment was pretty cool too, as you’re surrounded by some awesome and unique people, who are all equally into what you’re also into, and who you can bounce ideas of and work together with. Like the nerd i am i still drop by this years media class because i love it so much ;)
Out of the subjects i’m doing this year though i have to give a massive shout out to E.I (extended investigation) and Revs! They’re brilliant! I love the freedom that you get in E.I as you choose your own topic to follow throughout the whole year, and the the depth you can really explore it in. Mr Wilkin’s is also really great, and is the best to talk to not only about how to ace E.I, but about anything in general. Additionally, Revs is literally so interesting every class and i love learning about some of the most significant periods of history. You come to know the details of such life altering events and you come to think of them in such a casual and fun way! Ms Mcalpine is also just such a lovely and kind person, and she gives really good feedback on the work you do.
Good luck with choosing subjects and feel free to chat to any of us about any subject you’re interested in! You can also check out Meet the FAM leaders page to see what our individual subjects are :)
