Dozens of camels carried our equipment back to Ilik across the bed of the Shaksgam River. Muhammed Tursum often separated from the group seeking a safe crossing through the torrential melt water. After five days of marching through the desert, and crossing the Shaksgam river we had our first sight of K2’s North Side, intimidating, with its imposing steep ice covered walls. We soon arrived at what seemed a small oasis in the barren rock packed valley floor, scattered by bushes and flowers, we chose this small grass covered area for our Base Camp. Our home, isolated far away from home. On assignment @natgeo and as a team member of the expedition led by @ralfdujmovits, @pyhrgas, @maxut_zhumayev and #vassilypivtsov reached the top and completed the ascent of all 8000 meter mountains without oxygen, together with #darekzaluski. Tras varios dias de marchar por el desierto, y de cruzar el río Shaksgam, pudimos ver la cara norte del Monte K2 por primera vez, intimidante e imponente, con sus empinadas paredes recubiertas de hielo. Poco despues alcanzamos lo que parecia un pequeño oasis inmerso en en el valle recubierto de roca y arena, regado de arbustos y flores, elegimos esta pequeña zona recubierta de pasto para nuestro campo base. Nuestro hogar, aislados muy lejos de casa. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner contemplates the Shaksgam river Valley en route to K2’s North Side. Our approach to the mountain took one week through the Taklamakan desert carved by rivers flowing from the high Himalayan mountains, which donkeys and camels were often reluctant to cross. While camels await to depart, Amza Hazi prepares hot milk-tea and chapatis for her husband Danyar Osman, the mullah at the Kyrgyz nomad village of Ilik. Ready before crossing the Aghill pass, Danyar led a 40 camel caravan through the Shaksgam valley carrying our loads to the base of K2’s northern side. The full moon illuminates the northern slopes of K2, the second highest mountain in the world, whose sharp triangle silhouette and steep walls emerging above the surrounding terrain, make K2 far more difficult and dangerous to climb than Everest.
