Do you know if there ever was any ace or aro artist on Eurovision?

Eurovision Fact #372:

While there have been no asexual or aromantic Eurovision contestants, there have been many openly gay contestants and contestants who later came out as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Paul Oscar was the first openly gay Eurovision contestant. He performed for Iceland in 1997. The winner of that year's contest, Katrina and the Waves, also had their lead singer (Katrina Leskanich) come out many years later.

In 1998, Dana International made waves as she became the first trans contestant, and winner of the competition.

Israeli representative in 2002, Sarit Hadad, came out in 2021.

Representative of Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2004 and 2006 Deen has never come out explicitly, but openly posts about life with his boyfriend.

Winner of the 2007 contest, Marija Serifovic, came out as a lesbian in 2013 during the premiere of her film Confession.

Members of the group Blue -- who represented the UK in 2011 -- Duncan James and Lee Ryan have come out as gay and bisexual, respectfully. Ryan also admitted to sleeping with Duncan James often.

Winner of the 2012 contest, Loreen, came out as bisexual in 2017, stating that "love is where you find it."

Ireland's 2013 representative Ryan Dolan came out as gay the year following his Eurovision performance.

Thomas Neuwirth, otherwise known as winner of the 2014 contest Conchita Wurst, is openly gay.

In 2016, the Israeli representative Hovi Star was openly gay, and the Dutch representative, Douwe Bob, was bisexual.

Montenegro's 2017 representative Slavko Kalezić is openly gay.

In 2018, the Finnish representative Saara Alto was a lesbian, and Ukrainian representative Mélovin came out as bisexual in 2021.

In 2019 winner of the contest, Duncan Laurence, came out as bisexual at a Eurovision press conference. Additionally, France's contestant that year, Bilal Hassani, was queer. Moreover, member of the Norwegian band Keiino is openly gay. Finally, Italian contestant Mahmood has spoken out in support of LGBT rights, especially in Egypt, but does not like to label himself in any way.

Many of the contestants in the 2021 contest were members of the LGBT community: members of the Italian band Måneskin (winners of the 2021 contest) Victoria De Angelis and Ethan Torchio are openly bisexual and "sexually free" respectively. Australian representative Montaigne uses they/them pronouns and came out as bisexual. Spanish contestant Blas Cantó is also bisexual. Lesley Roy of Ireland is a lesbian. Vasil Garvanliev (North Macedonia), Jeangu Macrooy (Netherlands), and Jendrik Sigwart (Germany) are gay. Romania's Roxen is nonbinary, and member of the Icelandic group Daði og Gagnamagnið, Hulda, is pansexual.

2022 also saw a large number of LGBT contestants. Member of the Icelandic group Systur Elín is a genderfluid lesbian, and Michael Ben David of Israel and Sheldon Riley of Australia are both gay.

Finally, 2023 will also see many LGBT performers take the stage. Belgium's Gustaph and Serbia's Luke Black are gay, and Norway's Alessandra Mele is bisexual.

I think I've finally nailed exactly why I don't like North Macedonia's entry this year.

Vasil sounds exactly like John Barrowman performing a musical number, and that's not a flattering comparison to make at the moment.

(well, that and having the sheer audacity to steal Dotter's disco ball top gimmick from "Bulletproof")

24. NORTH MACEDONIA

Vasil - “You”

Song Analysis

As one may expect from being in the zone of the mildest of likes, the appreciation being doled out at this juncture is either academic or highly ironic in nature. Vasil marks the first instance of IRONIC LIKE in the matter. 😅

I mean, first of all, the fucking BRANDING: 

What’s this I ask and you may say: “um, that’s just some letters someone threw together in microsoft word and pasted onto a poster” and I would say, CORRECT! Yet, this is an example of market branding. Thought went into this.  Design time went into this. Money went into this. Someone got a professional bachelor degree in marketing to be allowed design this. “This” being the word “YOU” spelled out in capital letters. Replacing the A in “Vasil” with a lambda to make it appear stylish. 😍 This taps from the EQUINOX school of Empty Extraness and I stan it. 

Second of all, ‘VΛsil’ was basically unheard of as a rep until suddenly our good friends at Wiwinfluencers “SUDDENLY”, and “OUT OF THE BLUE” and “TOTALLY “”SPONTANEOUSLY””” suggested him as a possible rep, and lo and behold North Macedonia immediately entered talks with ‘VΛsil’ forthwith. 😍 THEIR POWER. 😍

So, it looks like North Macedonia did a lot to pimp the shiznit out of their entry. So you can understand that I only felt GIDDY excitement when the song they wasted all that expensive (by Macedonian standards) advertisement money was revealed as a clunky ballroom latin song that sounds like it’s straight from Eurovision 2004. 😍 complete with a video clip that immediately establishes ‘VΛsil’ ‘s utter incapability to dance 😍 or even remotely coexist on the same material plane with any member of the opposite sex. 😍

I am sticking with stills because the movement of a gif would disrupt the chi flowing through the meridians of this reviews. Does this count as the biggest murder committed any dancefloor since Sophie Ellis-Bextor tho? <3 

Naturally, this begs the question asked by the ancient Macedonian murder victim Socrates...  Why? 

Why does this entry conceptually exist the way it does? 

Why does it manage to come off as prisine as a gilded trashcan? 

Why is money and care being thrown at it as if it’s worth something? 

Why force an Absolutely Not Straight Man to dance with a professional female dancer, in a style he doesn’t feel comfortable with? 

Why try to be a Dancing With The Stars when you can be a The Masked Singer? 

Wouldn’t it be fair for ‘VΛsil’ to remain Vasil? 

It is anno 2020. A year that could be spelled out as the queer-friendly XX/XX in Roman numerals if you are a person who doesn’t understand how Roman numeral system works. 

Is it not time to unshackle those who prefer salami to sushi? 

To don the rainbow colours and parade our inner queer around? 

Shouldn’t we gay men be granted privileges equal to those bestowed upon a regular straight dude?

Well,

Macedonia 2020 & Macedonia 2021

In line with this the transcendental and utterly chaotic neutral nature of this post, I will let you decide what my vision on Vasil’s qualification chances would have been. Your options are: A) “Lmao” B) “Eek” and C) “None at all”. 

However, what of 2021? Will the Epic Streak continue for North Macedonia? Well, firstly, there really isn’t a streak, right? Unless you count Mila Moskov, who is awesome. Still, if we were to do that, would two people count as a streak? I suppose you can, since it’s possible to do the conga with only two people, but it would also be the world’s saddest conga. 

North Maceodonia hasn’t renewed Vasil’s participation yet. Shall he be back? Who knows? 

and more importantly, 

Who cares?

FREAKY! FRIDAY! FACTOR!

I mean, North Macedonia had a wonder year in 2019 with Tamara winning the jury vote and then Mila Moskov being the moral winner of the 2019 JESC contest (as it’s been widely established by Bitter Marte Stans that Poles are inherently amoral), so it only naturally makes sense they completely shreck their brittle reputation on the rebound with an entry that reaches the same level of incompetence as most of their JESC last placers. 😍 For all the shittalking I’ve been doing at Vasil’s address, I do enjoy “YOU”, if only for its utter fecklessness, if nothing else. Score: 3 Senhits out of 5.
