3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year That Alfira Scene (Chapter 10 of Aria of Will). It can be really challenging to write your own version of a pivotal scene from the main canon, but I think more than any other key scene I've incorporated that I managed to make this one uniquely horrifying.

7. longest completed fic you wrote this year Troubled Skies, clocking in at 20,298 words.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write Distillation. There is absolutely no question about it. I'd never written anything even vaguely spicy before this year, and somehow not only have I written four Explicit fics, this one is 6k of monsterfucking.

Though if I'm really being honest...I didn't expect to write ANY fic this year. Or get back into fandom on any level. I've written more fic in 2024 than I have from 2008-2023 combined.

24. favorite fic you read this year This is a loaded question and you know it! According to my magic reading spreadsheet I've read over 600 fics this year and rated 132 of them as Five Star. I picked one from every month, but this was genuinely hard considering how many fics I've loved this year. I should probably start a rec blog or something.

January: Open Me Up by @what-immortal-hand-or-eye. Trigun, Vashwood. I had Feelings. And I can't even pretend that the formatting didn't have a heavy influence on my own writing style.

February: Disco at the End of Time by Sarielle. Disco Elysium, Harry/Kim. Third part in a trilogy that I wholeheartedly recommend to EVERYONE, even fandom blind.

March: Whatever Happened to Jack Zimmermann? by ronandhermy. Check Please, Jack/Kent. Everyone here should already know I'm a sucker for atypical formatting and this one grabbed me.

April: The Hearts and Minds of Evil Men series by DoubleYouTeeEff. BG3, TavTash. Ricco has lived rent free in my brain for 8 months and doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast.

May: Breathe by @picathartidae BG3, Durgestarion. It's still going and it's always a delight when I get a subscription email for it.

June: Letters by mycolalia. BG3, Durgetash (ish). An epistolary that also uses the endnotes as part of the fic. Its FASCINATING.

July: The Diamond by @bharv BG3, Gortash/Lady Jannath. 6.5k of politics and transactional relationships...all inspired by a single note in BG3.

August: Force Immunity by @allconsumingrot BG3, Durgetash. I've reread it uhm. several times this year.

September: Reunited by @vialae BG3, Durgetash. I'm a sucker for fics about them attempting to reconnect after the brain damage, and the realization that Durge is no longer quite who they used to be, but this one hit me harder than most.

October: Taste of Bhaalspawn by @drones-art. BG3, Durgetash. My weird kinks are showing and I'm not sorry. This one bluescreened my brain.

November: in his voice i heard decay by @baronvontribble Fallout 3&4, Harkness/Sole Survivor. I'm admittedly a few chapters behind current because I've been busy with moving, but I was so excited I practically threw up when I saw that he was writing about Ted again.

Haven't had a chance to read much of anything in December yet because my entire life for the last 2 weeks has been unpacking boxes and building flatpack furniture.

I also did some annual rereads of personal favorites that will never not be recs. Specifically

The Adults in the Room by @strawberry-jan Yakuza, Kashiwagi/Yayoi. Adults having complicated, messy, ugly feelings.

The Way of All Flesh by @supaslim Fallout: New Vegas, Gen. I've reread this series every 12-18 months for the past decade and whenever I'm not reading it, it's always in the back of my mind haunting me like an intrusive thought.

And now that I've taken the time to try to choose a fic for every month, I'm now mad I had to choose. So yeah. I'm gonna make a rec blog. 💀

2023 fic roundup

phew!!! i wrote for four different fandoms this year, which is utterly wild to me given that most years i am writing for one or maybe two...but no, this year we went wild - bnha, genshin, trigun, and blue lock

so without further ado, my faves from each month:

jan 2023: i've made mistakes (but you were not one) - chaeya, i really hit my chaeya stride by this point and frankly i ADORED writing this fic, which was my first t4t chaeya fic !!!!

feb 2023: everything i ask for (and so much more) - chiluc, based on a scenario that my mom said she 'always wanted to see happen at a wedding' which rly made me laugh and thus i had to write it !!!

mar 2023: don't rush - kaeluc (and dilucest?), i just really enjoyed stretching my skills on this one in the vibes and also just. the mechanics of everything?

apr 2023: oh gods, there's two of them - cynonaribedo, which was just SO much fun after that event to consider how they'd interact and what shenanigans they'd get up to. also the smut was a fun challenge lmao

may 2023: don't be too good to me - vashwood, my first canon-universe fic for these silly guys that let me really explore the angst and also some of the lightheartedness

jun 2023: in your dreams - kaisagi !!!!! my first bllk fic!!! these two idiots make me feral !!!! they're so angsty and silly and i love them so much, i had a blast trying my hand at them!!

jul 2023: dark blue - kaisae, my last-minute final fic for kaisae july and the one that i reread and think about regularly lmao. one of my rare 2nd person pov fics, i had so much fun with teasing out all the imagery and emotions

aug 2023: but i'm losing blood and you're warm - bachisagi, currently my only bcis fic but my god was it SO fun to write, i loved getting to play in the horror genre a little and mixing that with romance and just UGH definitely up there as a fave

sept 2023: consumption - kaisagi, like what can i say except (pun intended) this premise consumed me so bad that i wrote it out of order bc i was so hooked on one particular scene. this whole story rly had me in a chokehold in the best way

oct 2023: pink light - ryusae, this is rly my favorite ryusae fic i've written to date. something about the premise and the gentleness and the second chances of it all just really got to me, i loved writing this so much

nov 2023: KNOCK.ME.OUT - ryurin, oh my god this fic....i reread this fic like every couple days for WEEKS after i finished writing it. more than i've reread any other fic, and purely out of a desire to just. live inside the story again. i loved it so much. up there with pink light as a fave for sure

dec 2023: tie me down (fuck me up) - saesagi, which like i feel like i went on a whole Journey abt saesagi within my brain and this is what came out. i rly enjoyed trying my hand at a new dynamic and taking sae out of his place of control for once !!!!

good directions - vashwood, and a fic concept i've been dying to write for ages, which just happened to work incredibly well with vashwood

kinda complicated - plantwood, which was really just an excuse to write so much porn for them lmao but i had a great time both with that and the complex dynamics between the three of them

a tentative ellipsis - kaisae, cause i can't say EVERY kaisae july fic, but this one also was such fun to think about and write, just like. the premise and the execution were so [shakes them in a pickle jar]

we both got stories (but they're not the same) - kaisae, this premise rly cracked me up i had SUCH fun writing it and getting a little silly with it lskdjfklsdjf especially with kaiser and all his denial

make me love like i want to - kaisae/ryusae, which honestly all manifested out of like. the one scene in the fic where sae writes not dead on his arm. and that ballooned into an entire almost 30k story about soulmates that ended up being unexpectedly cathartic

Summary:

Wolfwood’s eyes lingered at the exposed silver of Vash’s stomach. There must be something wrong with him, it wasn’t normal to feel and think like that from the mere sight of a little skin displayed so innocently. It made his palms sweaty and the tips of his fingers feel weirdly tingly. The heat under his skin certainly was just a byproduct of the hot shower. He wanted to touch so badly. Feel Vash’s skin under his fingers when his touch didn’t connect to pain. But instead, maybe, it could even bring something else. He had stolen a few not so appropriate glances at Vash on the rare occasion he was sure enough to get away with it. Now Vash was looking at him, eyes dark with something Wolfwood didn’t dare to name yet. Hungry, almost like he wanted to devour him. Vash had never looked at him like that before -------------------------------------------------------------------------- What started out as a normal night suddenly finds Vash and Wolfwood tangling in the sheets. But of course with Vash, things can never be easy or straight forward. It ends up working out anyway.

I finally did it! Couple days late for marchblooms24 aka vashussy but Vashwood cannot be normal abut anything, so. This has also been called untitled E fic, because i swear this is spreading and i never before had issues titling a fic, usually the title came with the concept. so yeah. enjoy

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

Ohhh this one is a little bit difficult to say? Specifically for Trigun since that's what almost all of my writing has been for, both Demon AU and the Vashwood Roleswap AU aren't going to be complete before year-end, so that's at least two. I have two more completed but unedited/unposted fics ready to go for Ladies Week so far, with one more I'm currently working on in the drafting stage and four more planned (whether they all get written in time is another story). I'm also planning at least one fic for sapphic week. In terms of other things I've already started and hope to start posting next year, I've also got the Castle in the Sky AU, the timeloop fics/series, more SWAP AU, and the little lumberjack/dryad au one-shot. In terms of things I haven't started and hope to work on next year, the Mecha AU and the Garden of Sinners AU are the two ones I'd really like to work on and start posting!

So, to summarize, the count for things I've started for next year is nine WIPs, and that jumps to sixteen if you count the things I haven't started but hope to finish and post. Hopefully I can do a little more than that, too, given that only gets me a third of the way through my ideas list and I'm sure I'll have more ideas rolling in.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

...Very much Vash lol. I also love Wolfwood, Meryl, and Milly a whole lot, but I relate to a lot of Vash's personal struggles and find him cathartic and comforting to write. He's also just a pretty complex character, so it feels like there are always other layers to him to explore via writing.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

Oh, this one is hard... I've written so much... Hmmmm, well, Chapter 31 of Demon AU was actually written in 2023, even if it was only posted in 2024... I think part of what makes this hard is that I'm the kind of person that's more enamored with scenarios and characters than specific lines or writing styles, so I don't fuss too much over word choice as long as it's functional to get the mood and whatever else I need conveyed. That being said, maybe it's the recency bias, but (Spoilers for the Vashwood Roleswap AU)--

Maybe he’d lost, but he’d forever deny Knives of the one true thing he wanted—affirmation that what he was doing was right, that he was a righteous protector instead of a ruthless, cruel tyrant. That his actions, born of fear that only served to inflict their pain onto others, were just. Vash loved Knives. Vash loved Rem. Vash loved humanity.  So he’d never give up on them. He’d never forget Rem. He’d never betray humanity. And he’d never stop defying Knives, so long as he clung to fear and refused to change. Because…  Well, call him naive, but a part of him still thought Knives might change. 

I think it just encapsulates my feelings on the relationship between Vash and Knives pretty well. Things are just... Messy, and complex, but no matter what Knives does, Vash is never going to just roll over for him, not anymore. And I love him for that.
