Mermaid Vash pinning from afar for Gill when he first sees her. She comes most every day to this same calm, sunny little spot further from the main beach area where people hang out, by some concealing rocks for some quiet space. Vash has started a routine of going there and watching her from the distance as she sits there, when she dips inside to swim and when she sits near the water he can barely hold himself back from swimming near her. He's hesitating only because he knows mermaids are advised not to approach humans, he shouldn't be as close as he is, but he's sure she's the mate he's been searching for and of course he hadn't found her under the sea because she's on land, but then how is he going to talk with her without being able to speak her language, should he transform but then he wouldn't be able to move. The first day she wasn't at the beach Vash got super nervous, he swam all along the coast all day looking for her, he was literally pacing for hours because he has no way of contacting her when she's on the land, and despite not having completed the mating process and becoming officially mates mermaids get super protective of their mates and since Vash acknowledges her as his mate he's just nervous to not know where she is then. She's back the next day and Vash is almost relieved enough to immediately swim there and hug her. He's worried about scaring her, male mermaids especially are rather large and she's already rather small for humans. When he finally introduces himself, it's because something on her blew away into the water, too far for her to swim to and he decides he's watched her enough without attempting to get closer, and he pops his head out of the water near it, letting her see him now. As he grabs it and swims closer, face half in the water, she first starts to think it's weird how this man is getting larger than he should as he approaches, then she notices the distorted colors of his tail beneath the calm waters, then when he's before her he rises higher and she sees his Mermaid features. Obviously, she is quite shocked to see that, and he worries she might run from him, but he self consciously offers her the thing and she slowly reaches and takes it from him with a thank you. He replies with a you're welcome, of course completely figuring she wouldn't understand, but she does to her own surprise and his as he sees the recognition. He's ecstatic because now he knows his mate isn't scared of him and can understand Mermaid language. She is fully enthralled, and they spend hours that day chatting, and agree to meet like every day there to continue chatting. They get closer, and Vash kisses her pretty earlier because he hasn't got a full understanding of human customs and he's already excited knowing she's his mate, good for them she'd already found herself attracted to this dude and she allows him to, he like surging upward while theyre chatting and she is laying on her front with him in the water below her at a rock. He loves to lead her out further to sea, mermaids surprisingly aren't great swimmers when they're in human form because they're not used to having legs and stuff, but neither know that and just assume she's not a great swimmer anyway, she often rides on his back to get around. When they're just relaxing in the water, she typically sits on his stomach while he reclines and floats facing upward to talk with her.

Their relationship is of course secret, but she does tell Meryl, milly, and wolfwood after a bit. Sometimes Vash transforms and wolfwood carries him off the beach to where they got a wheelchair for him and the team takes him around the town.

Vash before having his tail cut partially used to visit land quite often just to be near humans because he finds them neat. Thinking what if Knives was the person that severed his tail, he hates humans and hated his brother constantly seeking their company and then like how he cut his arm off "for his own good" He does that to his tail that way he can't walk with humans again, the arm could've been from just trying to save somebody else.

There's a little hidden cave inside the rocks they swim inside to hang out. They make sure Vash only emerges from the water when they're far from other humans.

Haven't figured out the exact size difference, but Vash is rather noticeably bigger than her or any other human. His tail by itself is quite long, but everything else is larger too. Everything ;) lmao. Also the mating process, because I have a particular weakness for fantasy race pairings marking their mates, is just an intimate act and they leave a bite on their mate. In this case Vash just leaves his big teeth marks on her entire shoulder and she can like never wear tank tops again lmao. Vash sorta forgot to explain what marking is between mermaids to his human partner and just did it, but hey she's got a biting kink and it hurt but she wasn't super opposed, he just licked it clean, though when he kinda came off the impulsive rush after and felt super bad for not explaining. Between Mermaid couples they just kinda know when to and she had like a faint impression that it was right but couldn't place it anywhere. She plays along and trues using her teeth to mark him but they're not sharp enough as a human to make anything deep.

The mermaids aren't explicitly certain species of sea creatures, though there can be similarities. Not sure if all mermaids have a shark type smell under water, but I want it like Lyric discovers Gill because his great ability to smell catches her blood on the waves. Vash's prosthetic tail falls off in a storm and it sinks faster than him, he can't grab it while getting tossed around, Gill swims after it where it was caught on a rock, she is slammed towards the rocks and is gashed fairly deep, but she gets the tail to him and they reattach it, she starts to go unconscious from loosing her breath, and he scoops her towards himself and swims her to the surface. It's from that gash and her blood in the water that Lyric finds her and sees them.

It's mermay now and perhaps I am creating ANOTHER Vash and Gill au. Hear me out here, lmao

Lyric and Gill, Vash and Nai are all mermaids. A few years ago, though, something involving Lyric caused Gill to wash ashore with no memories. All mermaids can make themselves look mostly human, and when she awoke she had already activated that ability and therefore just assumed she is human. She continued to stay by the sea, though; she felt inexplicably connected to the place.

Vash loves visiting the humans, to the disapproval of Nai who predictably despises all them. One day while swimming by the shore, he spots a beautiful girl dipping her feet into the sea. Entranced, he watches her until she leaves. Each day he returns, trying to see her. He thinks of transforming, considering if its something simple or a more intensive process, to meet her, but she eventually notices him as a mermaid when he ventured close by. She's FASCINATED, the two of them becoming friends. From some self indulgence, Vash is the one who is like practically immediately trying to woo her, mermaids kind of instinctualy try to find their mates and when they become convinced they found them they're full into wooing and Vash is more in touch with his instincts than Gill by then because she's been like human. Eventually, Lyric finds her again, and I think it would be best to have to have the transformation have specific requirements because then Lyric would be prowling the beach until he can either grab her and drag her in or go on shore and find her to snatch her again. Vash would help rescue her and they both realize that she is a mermaid too.

I imagine mermaids communicate in these like pitched tones, not like words. Vash coos at her and Gill isn't sure how she just knows what he's saying but she can understand him, and Vash can understand human speech but not actually say anything while he's not in that body. Their communication is just a mix of cooing and speech until she returns to her actual body. Also mermaids have their own prosthetics Vash uses made of coral, and mermaid magic it connects to their bodies and functions lmao. Vash is missing his right arm and almost half his tail. Which would also be a good reason he can't simply turn more human to meet Gill, he wouldn't have functioning prosthetics to move with. Maybe their first meeting involves like his tail prosthetic comes off in a wave and she has to help him get it again. But I kinda also want their first meeting a lil more casual.

Saw the live action l.ittle m.ermaid, and it mightve given me a little idea for the Mermaid au. Just a lil detail.

Was trying to decide how Lyric is erasing her memory. What if there's a few different types of mermaids, and Gill is specifically a siren. Lyric stole Gill's power of siren song and uses it to manipulate her and erase her memories.
