did y'all hear about! the new spores that have been bred to not only boost bees immune systems, but to survive in the maintained temperature within hives while it absolutely fucking wreaks havoc on varroa infestations! this is really exciting! a highly effective and natural treatment that's currently being posed to gain regulatory acceptance as a common and potentially even prevailing method of mite control! this is GREAT news; varroa destructor mite is a huge and ongoing contributor to the decline of the bee population worldwide, and the current treatments are either ineffective natural treatments or harsh chemicals that would necessitate removing any honey people would later be consuming. this is HUGE news!!! they're hoping to have it as a central treatment within the next decade!!!

#im VERY excited about this!!!!!!!#varroa are parasites that burrow up under the plates of a bees exoskeleton #they siphon off of the bees and spread diseases like crazy #theyre nasty little things that like to gestate in drone cells and while there are some bee strains that have been bred for resistance #(ie grooming behaviors that preen the majority of mites)#there is no surefire 100% way to be rid of them because all of the current methods are either weak or put a lot of stress on the colony #and if you hypothetically DID achieve 0 mites it would only take a few drifted bees or bumming drones to reintroduce them #its nasty! they carry tons of diseases that can wipe colonies out! destroying brood or crippling workers etc #they didnt mention in the article if this is going to be smtn you can leave in the hive or let contact honey supers #but the implication was definitely there!!#im so happy about this ahhh
