Kerala is the most scenic state in India, with crystal-clear blue ocean, white sand, bright coral reefs, a tranquil atmosphere, and temples that say volumes about bygone eras. This little nation-state is encircled by the magnificent Arabian Sea and the verdant Western Ghats. Kerala's two signature colours are sapphire and emerald. One is the hue of beaches that dot the landscapes, while the other is that of swaying palm groves. The first is the shade of its swaying palm groves, and the second is the colour of the numerous lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water that dot its terrain.

MY ANSWER
Ooh.. Long weekend is coming, need to utilise. Thought while filling up excel sheet in my office computer. Chill at home? its too hot outside, nope.. Parents will ask to do household chores! Go to hill station? Yes, let me check the train and flight tickets.. Shit.. All trains are booked, flights and hotels are way too costly. I can buy PS5 with that money. Shall I buy PS5? nope, its anyways way too costly. Agniv, need the data within 5 minutes, shouted boss.. wasted 30 minutes on searching. Need to search with more time.
Fast forward to evening that day-> scrolling reels while Atomic Habits laid in dust. DO YOU WANT CLIFFS AND BEACH AT THE SAME TIME? COME TO VARKALA, GREAT FOOD, GREAT NIGHT LIFE, GREAT FOR SHOPPING WITH VIEWS. UNIQUE PLACE JUST 1 HOUR FROM THE AIRPORT screamed one reel. Hmm.. interesting.. lets try the place. flights are anyways costly as the place is quite far from Kolkata, but atleast I can visit new place. Will save money by booking hostel.
Fast Forward-> trying to be awake at 2am sitting at Hyderabad airport which is my connecting airport. No A320s can cover all India.
Fast Forward-> Reached Thiruvananna... Trivandrum airport. early morning, the breeze itself makes you feel you are near coastal area. 40 kms more to my hostel. Sweet, will reach by the check-in time..
Full room to myself, nice.. Utilise the bathroom before the room gets full.. door opens.. enters 4 ladies, drenched in sea water. well, I feigned ignorance about their presence but every one of them were attractive. Hi, we need to change our clothes, can you excuse us for a minute? Hmm.. here goes my clean bathroom.. well, I can live with that. Also, I double checked with the hostel manager whether I mistakenly entered ladies dorm or not.
Went out for a walk. The place was absolutely stunning. Can watch the beach from the cliff above. Lots of temporary shops selling all beach clothes and accessories along the cliff. The place had a different vibe. The only con, its very hot and humid. Was feeling like the AC at the dorm is the destination I want to reach. I came back and was bombarded with questions from the ladies. Where are you from? how long you going to stay? can you ride scooty? The ladies were from Bangalore and was talking in their mother tongue in between which I didnt understand. I answered what they wanted to hear and made friends with 4 ladies at an unknown tourist place.
We rented a scooty and visited all the attractions.. did kayaking and learned surfing lessons. went for breakfast lunch and dinner together. At our last breakfast before we left for the airport, came the question from one lady, you are single right? Nope, I am married for 5 years......
I woke up suddenly.. Where am I? THIS IS THE LAST BOARDING CALL FOR ALL THE PASSENGERS FOR INDIGO FLIGHT FROM HYDERABAD TO TRIVANDRUM, REQUESTED TO PROCEED TO GATE NO 5 IMMEDIATELY. Oh, its my flight they are calling. Need to run.. Took my belongings and ran towards the gate. I ran and I ran excitedly, I ran happily knowing what my answer should be.....

Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old holistic healing system, is central to the wellness experience in Varkala. Based on balancing the body’s doshas (biological energies), Ayurvedic treatments at these retreats can help cleanse and rejuvenate both the mind and body.
Detoxification (Panchakarma): Varkala retreats often offer Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic detoxification process that purifies the body of toxins through treatments such as oil massages, herbal therapies, and cleansing techniques. Panchakarma is known to improve digestion, immunity, and overall health.
Customized Health Plans: Ayurvedic doctors assess each guest’s dosha type and health concerns, creating personalized treatment plans that include dietary guidelines, herbal supplements, and wellness practices.
Therapeutic Massages and Treatments: From Abhyanga (oil massage) to Shirodhara (pouring oil on the forehead to calm the mind), Ayurvedic massages and treatments are designed to relieve stress, promote relaxation, and support healing. These treatments enhance the overall experience, leaving you refreshed and balanced.
By incorporating Ayurveda into their programs, Varkala retreats offer a holistic wellness experience that promotes detoxification, rejuvenation, and overall well-being.
4. Detox Programs for Comprehensive Wellness
Detoxification is a cornerstone of Varkala’s wellness retreats. The retreat programs are specifically designed to cleanse the body, clear the mind, and encourage emotional release, leading to a renewed sense of vitality and balance.
Body Detox: Through a combination of Ayurvedic cleansing practices and nutritious meals, these detox programs help remove toxins from the body. Diets at these retreats often consist of organic, plant-based foods that support liver function and encourage gentle detoxification.
Mental and Emotional Detox: Many Varkala retreats integrate mental detox practices such as journaling, meditation, and breathwork. These exercises help clear mental clutter, making space for new ideas, emotional balance, and a positive outlook.
Digital Detox: As a way to reconnect with the present moment, several retreats encourage a digital detox by limiting technology use, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wellness journey without distractions.
With a blend of body, mind, and digital detoxification, these programs foster a deep sense of well-being that extends beyond physical health.
5. Living an Ayurvedic Lifestyle: A Guide to Lasting Wellness
One of the most transformative aspects of a retreat in Varkala is the guidance in adopting an Ayurvedic lifestyle, which promotes healthy living and mindfulness.
Daily Routines (Dinacharya): Dinacharya, or Ayurvedic daily routines, involve simple practices like waking up early, drinking warm water, and practicing yoga, all of which support a balanced and harmonious lifestyle.
Mindful Eating: Ayurveda emphasizes eating according to one’s dosha type, focusing on seasonal and organic foods that nourish and balance the body. Many Varkala retreats provide Ayurvedic cooking classes, allowing guests to learn how to prepare wholesome, healing meals.
Self-Care Practices: Retreats often introduce self-care practices such as dry brushing, oil pulling, and Abhyanga (self-massage), which help promote circulation, detoxification, and relaxation.
By following these Ayurvedic lifestyle practices, guests learn sustainable habits that they can take home, making their retreat experience a lasting part of their daily lives.
6. Additional Experiences: Exploring Varkala Beyond the Retreat
While the yoga and wellness retreats provide a deeply transformative experience, Varkala itself has much to offer. Exploring the area can enrich the retreat experience, adding more layers to your journey.
Visiting the Sacred Varkala Cliff and Beach: A visit to the Varkala Cliff and Beach allows you to unwind and connect with nature, with stunning ocean views and soothing waves. It’s also a popular spot for evening meditation and sunset yoga sessions.
Exploring Local Markets and Ayurvedic Shops: The markets in Varkala offer locally sourced Ayurvedic herbs, oils, and wellness products. Many retreat participants enjoy exploring these markets to learn more about Ayurveda and pick up authentic wellness products.
Temples and Spiritual Sites: Varkala is home to the ancient Janardhana Swami Temple, a revered pilgrimage site. Visiting local temples and sacred sites offers insight into Kerala’s spiritual heritage and adds a contemplative element to the retreat experience.
These additional experiences make Varkala a unique wellness destination, providing a blend of relaxation, exploration, and spiritual growth.

India is becoming a rising popular destination for surfers. With tropical beaches and extensive coastlines giving power to turquoise and crystal-clear waters complemented by frothy waves, there are various beaches in India that are simply ideal for learning to surf.
Kerala adds to the list of many exceptional locations where you can learn to surf, enjoy playful waves dancing beneath your feet, listen to the wind howling through your ears, be in close proximity to nature, and to have the most mind-blowing experience of your life.
Continue reading to learn more about the several surfing destinations in Kerala.
Kovalam, Trivandrum
In addition to having some of India’s top surfers and the most consistent waves, Kovalam is dedicated to an amazing social surfing movement. Kovalam is currently home to a number of surf schools from Surf Turf to Ocean Delight that instruct in well-known locations like Covelong Beach. Despite the unpredictability of the surf in Kovalam, there is a little breaker in the midst of the bay that is occasionally exploited by the neighbourhood surf schools.
India’s artificial surfing reef, finished in 2010, makes Kovalam stand out as a premier surfing location. Kovalam Beach is the crowning glory of the entire resort region. The hotels, coconuts, and sunshine are worth the trip to Kovalam while you surf on the sides.
Surfing spots: Surf Club, Bay of Life
Varkala Beach, Varkala
Varkala is an exciting destination, especially for aspiring surfers, in addition to being a pleasant place to unwind and relax. Varkala Beach’s tranquillity can relieve your mind if you have any doubts about exploring the waves. Varkala is also home to the famous Soul & Surf hotel that has combined yoga and surfing courses.
Varkala has some beautiful point breakers that come off seawalls and perform well with swells over a long time. If you’re a longboarder seeking for empty lines, Varkala is a true haven. Southern cliff is a paradise for surfers and for professionals the pre-monsoon and post- monsoon season is best with bigger swells. Smaller swell season during the winter time is best for beginners and practitioners.
Surfing Spots: Soul & Surf Hotel, Cliff & Coral
Kappil, Varkala
8 kilometres from Varkala lies the charming Kappil beach and backwaters. Since it’s close to Trivandrum, people come here to enjoy the magnificent backwaters, the variety of water activities and stay at the beautiful varkala beach resorts that are available. The majority of surfing activities occur at Kappil Beach.
Despite the fact that massive seawalls built of enormous boulders now run the whole length of Kappil Beach, the swell and shape of the waves don’t seem to have been significantly impacted. This is fantastic since the neighbourhood surf schools frequently send their more advanced groups here.
Surfing spots: Majestic Retreat Resort by Voye Homes, Surf on a Sup
Edava Beach, Varkala
Edava Beach, one of the best locations to visit in Varkala, is a tranquil and isolated beach in Kerala that is located 2 km from Kappil Beach and 5 km from the Varkala Railway Station. The secluded land is engulfed by a turquoise lagoon, which is made up of the sea and backwaters separated by a thin strip of land. In addition to the clam heritage, the Beach boasts surfing places to entice daring spirits.
The breaks range from beginning to low-intermediate. There are a few tiny rocky outcroppings in Edava that project into the water and provide a few uncommon point breaks that can be effective on the bigger days.
