ASSESSMENT 2 – FINAL STATEMENT

My piece examines the possibilities of the glitch as a bridging of worlds between the conscious and subjective sentimentality of the human experience with the systematic and objective world of technology. More specifically about the idea of a glitch in the technological system acting out in a way that enables it to briefly take on traits of a living being, exporting sentimental thought and subjective emotion along with the typical aspects of a computer glitch i.e. file corruption, error windows and lag duplication.

The glitches I had created in assessment 1 had manifested in the system expressing thoughts of anxiety, paranoia and a general fear of death. This ties with the concept of glitch severity and how some glitches can completely kill a system, much like an illness can completely kill a human. I have also touched on consciousness and awareness in that humans and animals instinctively seek awareness of their surroundings for survival, and this is achieved most commonly through simple questions in dialogue i.e. Who, Where, When, Why and What? Etc. However, I have extended this creative concept by this time creating an animation, not just so there are more avenues for creative ideas, but that I could now incorporate a sense on narrative with a structured decline; everything begins fine, something minor occurs and the system degrades, manifesting in more corrupt glitches and sound effects.

To further my concept from assessment 1, I have firstly included the idea of affiliations with other systems/people experienced with this glitch. In being worried for the lives of others, this idea of the glitch becoming the embodiment of a conscious system is heightened as a need for social interaction is a necessary component of human survival. This is seen through the computer asking questions like “What about my kids?” as the system corrupts and begins to decline. I have also incorporated the idea of human death proceedings and how they are distinct to the human. Not only do I feel this humanizes the system more, but forms depth in the narrative I am trying to create. I found myself instinctively connecting with this system I had created because I had incorporated elements of the Christian funeral including the hearse and the lowering of a coffin into a grave. These are familiar to the average white Australian whether they have been to a funeral or not. I also humanized this glitch further by mentioning formal outlines associated with death that are outside the Christian practice, such as labelling a Time Of Death as well as Rigor Mortis setting in.

It was really good to be able to incorporate sound effects as well. There’s something humorous about error sounds in computers, especially the Windows XP error sound which I was looking forward to utilizing. I experimented in audacity with these error sounds, compressing and duplicating them to make sounds which were as glitched out as possible.

I drew a lot of influence and inspiration from Neil Cicierega and his Windows 95 Tips series on Tumblr, in which the tips screen from the Windows 95 startup screen (which usually aid in help with general computer functionality) take on a sinister and seemingly alive persona. These tips allude to unsettling imagery of computers collecting the user’s blood and installing hardware inside of the user. This unnerving atmosphere created by Cicierega is seen in my work but to a lesser extent and with a heavier emphasis on existential dread rather than sinister imagery. I also drew inspiration from numerous other Tumblr artists that influenced my decision to create a narrative and to create a system as close to a conscious human as possible; vaporwaveworld gave me the idea to incorporate relationships and a social understanding in the system and audiovisual-dept motivated me to really emphasize the purpose of the narrative and the decline of this system, steering away from the vapid sentimentality associated with vaporwave scene on tumblr. My work was created using Audacity, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier, and Adobe After Effects CC.
