Delays, delays, delays

Day 1 & 2: Vancouver to Parksville

The trip started out a bit rough. Our flight was delayed by an hour for reasons that were never really made clear. I spent that time watching airline staff run around like something was going down. There was a lot of head shaking and heaving sighs. Clearly someone wasn’t doing their job... Anyways, we eventually got boarded and settled into our uneventful 4 hour and 45 minute flight to Vancouver.

Since our plane landed late, we stayed the night at the Accent Inn Vancouver Airport.

Right after taking this picture, we noticed a stain on the top cover - GROSS. I had been warned by a good friend of mine (who works in housekeeping at a hotel) that the fancy top sheet with all the designs on it rarely, if ever, gets washed between stays. That goes for any hotel from Motel 6 to the fancy Fairmonts. It may look pretty, but do yourselves a favour and make it your first priority to rip that top sheet off before crawling into bed. That goes for those cute throw pillows as well. Who knows where they’ve been...

Putting aside my germaphobic tendencies, the Accent Inn was pleasant and the room was a decent size. The rooms opened to the outside so no internal corridors. You could also hear people having showers and flushing toilets but that’s common in most places. I found the bed a bit firm for my liking but others might prefer that. The hotel also had a complimentary airport shuttle, which we took from the airport and then tried to again the next morning to pick up our rental car back at the airport. We were out the door at 9am just in time to see the shuttle leave. So we waited..... and waited.... and waited. A crowd of people were soon gathered, to the point that I wondered if the shuttle was ever coming back. Eventually someone from the front desk came outside to tell the crowd that the shuttle was “stuck in traffic” and was running 15 minutes behind schedule. Mmmmmmmk. Out of curiosity, I pulled out my phone to check the traffic. Maybe there was an accident or something? Nope. This made me wonder where exactly this shuttle was going? Did it break down? Did the driver need a serious pee break? I guess I’ll never know... A taxi rolled up the driveway and then what appeared to be the hotel manager started handing out taxi vouchers, saying anyone who needed to urgently get to the airport could take a taxi on the hotel’s dime. I guess we’ll never know what happened to the shuttle but whatever it was, it must have been serious...let’s just say it was abducted by aliens. 

Everyone was looking around at each other and nobody was really taking action. By this point it was pushing for 10am and we had planned to pick up the car by that point. Since nobody else was moving too fast, we hopped into a taxi along with this other older couple who was also from the Toronto area. We had a nice chat with them about bungee jumping and the hot housing market until we got back to the airport.

We picked up our blue 2017 Chevrolet Cruze and made it our first priority to get some breakfast.

We decided to try Yolks - Broadway & Cambie location. It was surprisingly busy at 11am on a weekday - or maybe it’s just that popular? I guess a line is a good sign - or a sign of over hype. Either way, we were about to find out. After waiting nearly 30 minutes, we were finally seated in the back part of the tiny restaurant, right beside another couple, so we were pretty much sharing a table for 4. It felt a bit cramped but we made do. 

I ordered the Oatmeal with Almond milk and a side of banana  - $6.25

The oatmeal was cooked in spiced apple cider, which already gave it enough moisture so I found I didn’t really need the milk. Too bad because I paid an extra $1.00 for it. The cider also gave a nice tartness, which meshed nicely with the sweetness from the banana. I really enjoyed this! The portion size was just right and was priced fairly in my opinion. It’s a great option if you’re not in the mood for a huge breakfast.

I also had a poached egg on the side - $2.75

Had to get my protein boost! But at nearly $3 a pop, it was a bit steep for 1 egg. Perhaps the eggs were super organic or something but it didn’t taste much different to me than any other poached egg I’ve ever had. The yolk was very runny inside so if you like yours a bit firmer, you might want to mention this when you order. 

Alex ordered the 2 eggs with Maple Smoked Ham and aged white cheddar on Truffle-Lemon Hashbrowns - $13.50

Feast your eyes on this delicious mound of breakfast comfort food. A stark contrast to what I ordered, but holy crap, this was effing good. The “hashbrowns” were more like massive potato wedges and boy, did that lemon flavour ever POP. From what I tried, it was a bit too salty for my taste but maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for that. If you want a savoury breakfast though, definitely get this, as ordered above. Fantastic. 

Yolks was definitely a good breakfast spot and I can understand why there was a lineup out the door. They aren’t your super pretentious health conscious establishment but they serve up fresh food with fresh ideas. Their menu wasn’t shocking but they did have some unique items that would be interesting to try, like Chicken & Waffles. We saw these being served at other tables and it too looked phenomenal - if you’re into that sweet mixed with savoury kind of thing, which I am...if only I ate chicken. I’d recommend Yolks if you are looking for a non-greasy, better-than-you’re-average-diner breakfast place, serving delicious freshly brewed bottomless coffee, and don’t want to break the bank - just avoid the $3 egg on the side. Be prepared to wait though as none of the locations take reservations. 

With our bellies full and hyped up on caffeine, we rolled our way back to the car and headed to Lynn Canyon Park.
