My 365 favourite albums
138. Port O’Brien - The Wind And The Swell  (American Dust, 2007)
Listen if you like: The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, The Shins
Port O’Brien had one small hit song back in 2007, called “I Woke Up Today” (look it up), but their album The Wind and The Swell was an overal nice listening experience: indie folk that wasn’t overproduced. It’s nothing too shocking, but I listened to it a lot back then.
the new band of the frontman Van Pierszalowski is  called Waters.

WATERS’ new track is named ‘You Don’t Know What You Want’, but the thing is, I know exactly what I want. I want that new album ‘Something More!’, and I want it now! Unfortunately, I still have a few days to wait as the California five piece won’t be releasing their third record on Vagrant/BMG until Friday, May 19th, but I confess I’ll be very much content in the meantime listening to this hearty chugging cut. Lead singer and SF native Van Pierszalowski explains of the song: “’You Don’t Know What You Want’ is a mashup of various flashes of conflict and disagreement I’ve had in relationships in between long stretches of highway and days spent hanging out at the Subway on Kodiak Island in Alaska. There have been so many times in my life where I have literally no idea what is going on in my partner’s head and I wanted to make it all into a fun pop song so I could deal.” Soon after ‘Something More!’ arrives, I’ll get to see WATERS at Live 105′s BFD at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. June 10th can’t come any sooner, after May 19th comes first, of course.

WATERS are back with another jagged, anthemic rocker. “Molly is a Babe” amplifies what already makes the band such a riveting, pummeling listen: the wall of guitars, Van Pierszalowski’s howling, the rest of the band’s chanting vocals, the scream-along choruses. [Read more]

Stream: Waters, 'Hiccups'
Stream: Waters, ‘Hiccups’
After two albums and an EP, singer-guitarist Van Pierszalowski gave his band Waters a rest last year, releasing two singles under the guise of his solo project Van William. Now he’s revved up his quintet’s engine again with the declaration: “I wanted to make a record that was communicating with my teenager self, as if to say ‘It’s always gonna be the same shit just in slightly different…

We’re a few weeks closer to the release date for WATERS’ third album “Something More!” and another song richer when it comes to the dashing treats the Los Angeles based band with San Francisco roots has given us off the album ahead of full length launch day. The quartet, lead by the Bay’s own Van Pierszalowski, are more triumphant soaring than ever on Stand By You, a deeply comforting ballad that discards some of WATERS’ usual punchy kicking energy for a smooth jettison across clear blue skies. WATERS promises they’ll stand by us through all that may come, and our confidence is bolstered, our worries forgotten, as we acknowledge that their new album is going to be a trustworthy companion in the days ahead. Pre-order “Something More!” ahead of its release on May 19th, here, and get Stand By You as well as prior singles Hiccups and Molly Is A Babe instantly.

Ears Wide Open: Van William
Ears Wide Open: Van William
Singer-songwriter Van Pierszalowski has spent his post-Port O’Brien years building his ’90s-channeling rock outfit WATERS into one of the most fun and celebratory rock bands around, hitting his stride with last year’s sophomore album “What’s Real.” But having gone where his songwriting muse pulled him, Pierszalowski found that his new batch of songs weren’t exactly WATERS’ thing. So meet Van…

Who’s excited about WATERS’ third album “Something More!”? We are! Especially after the Los Angeles based band (created by San Francisco’s Van Pierszalowski) gave us a whopping first taste in the form of infectious Hiccups. They now follow it up with swashbuckling Molly Is A Babe. Punchy riffs and raw bellowing vocals make this a triumphant and exhilarating power pop meets alt rock anthem. Despite its energy, there’s a dark edge to Molly Is A Babe in its ruffled periphery, too. Something More! arrives on May 19th. Pre-order, here.
