this year i've been doing a lot of stuff that i didn't mean to do, and not doing a lot of stuff that i did mean to do. i got involved with the kink scene, i deepened my familiarity with carbonated beverages, i ate a lot of fried chicken sandwiches, i started reading again, and i played a lot of gacha.

and speaking of gacha, the only one that stuck with me from the decent-sized crop that i sampled this year was mihoyo's zenless zone zero! what to say about it . . . it's a Real Game, for one. it manages to shed the unsheddable "rubbishy" feel that is almost universal to gacha. its premise is like if andy and leyley were normal and worked as shadowrun hackers in jet set radio tokyo, in a semi-apocalyptic world where the only people around are orphans, anthros, or both. there are also sentient automatons that have cool outfits, and chubby baby bunny robots, but unfortunately neither of them have rights. it's got a really cool soundtrack, a charming spiderversesque look, and characters i found surprisingly compelling.

new music! well, new to me at least. you know ben and jerry's cherry garcia (possibly the most prominent contemporary cherry-focused ice cream flavor)? well jerry garcia was a guy who had this band that old men loved called the grateful dead. and well, i don't really care for what i've heard of their records to be honest. but it must be said that they were a jam band, and the 16 minute terrapin station gives one a taste of what i assume was the sensory height of a real-life hippy's experience, and i can imagine listening to it for decades to come.

indeed, if one wants a meal in the proggy realm rather than a bite, it's best to look to the guys that do that stuff all the time across the pond. Morgan put me on to electric wizard and their impeccable self-titled album has been in heavy rotation since. jackie put me on to yes' album relayer, and the first track provides the rarefied pleasure of hearing the singer of the irrepressibly lighthearted and goofy jojo anime ED "roundabout" trill about bathing in the blood of one's enemies.

in more occasional listening i have to rep my oshi 星街彗星 (hoshimachi suisei). her consistently strong body of work ranges from saccharine, to heartfelt, to sort of diva-core. listen, it's increasingly popular to reference hatsune miku, and it's often done with a sort of surface-level appreciation of miku, riding off of the long history miku has in overseas otaku culture. i myself have participated in this. but step outside the bit with me here. miku is a synth, an instrument. miku has all the humanity of the DX7. in fact that's what her color scheme is based on (because yamaha made both miku and the DX7)! hoshimachi suisei . . . listen, maybe people aren't ready. but she really is a virtual pop star. she's iconic. she's got a sigma grindset. she has a favorite food and a sister and friends and it's not lore it's reality. she's not a prop owned by a company, but an autonomous performer! miku is a virtual girl. suisei has a virtual face, but she's a real woman with a real dream! won't you believe in it?

staying with japanese affairs for a moment, anime has been good too! gushing over magical girls, perfect show, hannibal for anime girls, delightful and heartfelt. i also watched the vexations of a shut-in vampire princess, which was frenetic, lightning fast and kind of stupid, but i eagerly await another season. both extremely lesbian.

looking ahead, i'm extremely excited for the release of the alters, a game whose demo caught me completely off-guard, and i'm also excited to try the early access release of marmoreal, a sort of isometric completely touhoucore game with so much charm and sincerity.

Thoughts on Miku Expo (CDMX 2024)

Just my raw thoughts not a review or anything

When I first got the email for the MikuExpo presale I was so excited, something like this was a long time coming and before the pandemic hit it was actually coming but since then I had been waiting so when it finally came back to me I bought tickets immediately which filled me with joy that as the event started happening in other parts of the continent slowly soured, from the infamous screen to the lack of glow sticks to the incredibly mediocre setlist my hopes were getting crushed but I had already bought the plane tickets and planed my week away with a few friends that lived in the city so I was already committed. After a weird mix of anticipation and dread the show arrived and they made us go early for some reason (5:00 pm and the show started at 8:00 pm) and we got in line, then after like 30 minutes of line came another 30 minutes of line with the merch and then finally finding a place to settle for the show going forwards. I also wanna mention we saw Sr. Pelo which was funny but anyways getting back to the point.

Everyone was so excited and shouting, we got chants from silly stuff like Miku Pelona (Bald Miku) when a bald Miku plushie would be thrown into the air to the classic fuck Crunchyroll and other before at 8:00 pm the show finally started.

The first notes of Miku by Anamanaguchi hit and I was instantly enthralled, I don’t even particularly care for that song (I’m for of a Kira fan for my english Miku) but I don’t know, the moment just felt special, like being in something you love with people you love surrounded by a community of people that also love the same thing, it was incredibly surreal and I was happy, the song was followed by Vampire which is also another song I don’t care much for even with me being a crazy Deco*27 fan but I had so much fun dancing, singing and playing with the bootleg glowsticks we all got that I just didn’t care anymore, I was there and I was having fun.

Afterwards we got Unknow Mother Goose which I do like and had fun with but I would have preferred Rollin Girl but it was the moment I started to realize something, as much as I wanted the holograms and to get the full experience, all things considered the screen looks pretty good, the videos I’d seen didn’t do it justice and even the ones I recorded look way worse than it looked irl so at this point I was in, I was having fun, enjoying everything and completely dissociated from my body, I was just part of this and I was having the time of my life, the culmination of 12 years of fandom was here.

Rin in general was a lot of fun and I had a great time cheering (she’s my fave) and Magical Cure Love Shot! (I spell it how I want shut up) was also a lot of fun,  I wasn’t super into the songs but the vibe was still shining, the band was giving it their all with the guitarist especially being a highlight with how crazy she would go for no reason at all, it was awesome.

Our show had an exclusive bonus track which of course was MikuFiesta and it was a moment for sure. After a while (by a while I mean 17 songs out of 24) we get the band introduction and a small break before returning with Hyper Reality Show and then it happened, the moment that will stick forever in my mind as I hear SEKAIIIIIIIIIIII DE and the show peaked, nothing would come close to that performance of World is Mine, the most iconic of Miku songs at least for the shows was like nothing else, everyone was so into it and having so much fun, it was a magical moment that I will always remember fondly and I greatly appreciate having been a part of.

Tell Your World was another song on the setlist I enjoyed a lot but the show was nearing it’s end and with Miku doing the trademarked mention of the place she was in during Intergalactic Bound the show came to an end but of course because this is a concert that was a fake out for the obligatory encore that was pretty short but enjoyable and surprisingly closed with Highlight by KIRA which was a welcome surprised as I had forgotten the setlist at that point and I was just happy to had been there and experience the magic of miku as dumb as it sounds.

Now could it have been better? yes, will I still condemn and talk shit about the event organizers? yes, did I have some of the most fun I’ve ever had at a concert? abso-fucking-lutely. I loved every second I spend there and I’m glad I got to experience it at least once, now we just need to go to another one with a better setlist and holograms but I still won’t ever regret going to this one, it was an experience that will linger in my mind forever.

sooo it’s been a couple of days since I went to Miku Expo and like… I think I’m still reeling from the fact that I actually went since I’ve been listening to vocal synth music since my childhood and I never expected that I’d actually be able to go to one of these concerts?

some thoughts and highlights under the cut!

the show I went to was sold out (in D.C.) and I stood in line + waited for like, 6 or 7 hours? but I had so much fun that it was worth it!

I helped some people put film inside their penlights, and it was nice chatting with them while we were waiting!

some groups of elderly people who were hanging out in the area were confused about what was going on and after asking some concert-goers to explain they started laughing LMAO (some puzzled passerby’s asked me too and I just said “oh it’s a J-pop concert!” because I didn’t want to go into what Vocaloid was in full detail haha)

there were so many cute cosplays there; I saw a lot of people in Miku’s Vampire outfit and was surprised to also see an Oliver cosplayer, there were also some dressed as Project Sekai characters too!

before the show, every time someone in the audience held up a Miku plush, everyone around them would cheer and hold up their penlights

some people also brought Miku plushes that were bald and whenever they held up those, everyone would shout “BALD, BALD, BALD!” (and I heard someone say “MY EYES!!!”)

the songs the crowd were the loudest for were Miku, Vampire, and World is Mine (it was… so loud during World is Mine LOL)

Kaito fans were being Kaito fans when he did his solo (ILY Kaito fans you’re so iconic) and there was also a notable amount of hype when Luka’s solo finally happened since it took until halfway through the show to get to her

I know the setlist was quite controversial when it was released online but I honestly liked hearing it in person, I feel like the band really elevated the experience (kudos to them!), I really liked how they played for Literacy and Hyper Reality Show in particular

and maybe a hot take but the screen wasn’t… that bad to me? but that was also because I was in the very front and the venue put lights around the stage as well, so I may be biased
