Celebrated my first Swedish Valborg - it’s a holiday that celebrates the arrival of spring with singing and huge bonfires! We found a great viewpoint where we could see 3 big fires. So much fun experiencing new traditions. #travelroots #purposedriventravel #valborg #valborgmässoafton #stockholm #stockholmarchipelago #newtraditions (at Nyckelvikens Herrgård)

Denna Valborgmässoafton, anno 2017, inleds i lugn och ro på verandan. Sedan varvar dagen upp och ikväll går jag i närkamp med Vårens melodier. Tyngd av sorg över att Vintern rasat ut.

Barricades and bonfires don't go well together
I've been thinking. First of may, the International Workers day, is a public holiday where the workers is demonstrating for better working conditions and also politically for better living standard and human rights.
In Sweden, First of may is followed by Valborgsmässoafton, witch occurs last of April. On Valborgsmässoafton we lit huge bonfires built of rubbish, stick and broken wooden things such as beds, chairs, tables and planks.
They say we build these bonfires to scare the witches away, but I have come to believe that this is a lie. The real reason is that we burn up all the materials that can be used to make barricades!
It can't be a coincident that these two event takes place at the same time. The government planed it to make sure that no wild hearts will get the idea of building a barricade and start a revolution!
