Chaiti Ghoda is a lively and popular folk dance from Odisha, especially performed by the aboriginal fishermen tribes like the Keot (Kaibarta). "Chaiti" refers to the month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar, which spans from March to April, and "Ghoda" means horse in Odia and Hindi.
Tumblr media
The dance has its roots in a local legend where Lord Rama, assisted by the Keot fishermen in crossing a river, gifted them a horse in gratitude. This story is central to the dance's theme and the prop used—a beautifully painted wooden horse, decorated with colorful clothes.
In the Chaiti Ghoda dance, the fishermen, called Rauta, perform the main dance while their wives, called Rautani, join as co-dancers and singers. The performance typically features two wooden horses, one black and one white.
This dance is part of a larger festival celebrated for eight days in honor of Vasuli Devi, the primary deity of the fishermen tribes. The festival takes place from the full moon of Chaitra (March-April) to the full moon of Baisakh (April-May). Celebrating this festival is a way for the community to seek the blessings of their deity, Vasuli Devi, highlighting the dance's cultural and spiritual importance.
