This photo is from the very beginning of me playing live. It was an open mic that I attended every Wed. night. I was wearing a motorcross jersey from when I raced as a small kid. It made me feel strong. Previously, the host of the open mic told me to learn how to play guitar so I could get up and sing any time I liked (instead of needing accompaniment). So every a.m. when I made my bed, I placed the guitar right where I slept. When I went to bed I had to pick it up, and of course, that made me work out some chords. One by one I sorted out sounds and my fingers learned where to land so I could play songs. That eventually led to gigs. 1,500 gigs later, I still find joy in picking up a guitar and making sounds. Knowing your “why” helps in reaching a goal. For me the “why” was connecting with a vibe bigger than myself .. becoming a conduit and then reflecting that healing light into my soul and into the world. So whether or not I was supported or promoted, nothing has stopped me. Not break-ups. Not financial failure. Not debilitating sickness. Not loneliness. You get the picture. My point is, keep on keeping on, even when the room is quiet. You owe it to yourself. You’ve got this.
