Announcing the Vuelta a Espa帽a Fanwork Classification 2024!
Come one, come all, turn off the Olympics for a brief moment and persuse the course ahead!
On this, the eve of the Olympic Road Race, the prompts for the Vuelta Fanwork Classification 2024 are being released ahead of time to give people time to prepare! More details will come shortly, but be aware that while you can create as much as you want, the classification will only open for posting on the day of the team presentation, so at August 15th 00:00am GMT. The classification will close on midnight the day after the final stage, so on the 9th September 11:59am GMT.
The same rules apply as the previous round. You are welcome to fulfill as many or as few prompts as you wish, in whatever order you wish. Whoever wins the General Classification with the most stages passed will win the prestigious glitter jersey- but in spain it is of course the maillot chispeante!
Should you wish to aim for a smaller goal, each category of stage will also have its own Category Classification. The winner of each of these classifications will get a little PNG accesory to show off their specialised skills!
Start thinking, start planning, and drop an ask if you have any questions!

The Results Are In!
At last, the scores have been counted, the tiebreakers taken into account, and the results are in! Thanks to everyone who participated in this event, whether by creating something or simply writing a comment- you are all the lifeblood of this fandom and that鈥檚 what this event is here to encourage!
Without further ado, we would like to congratulate our winner of the General Classification and thus the winner of the Vuelta鈥檚 Glitter Jersey- this year鈥檚 maillot chispeante, @miloformula123fan! Below is your prize, as well as bragging rights for the rest of the year. Expect to be聽 challenged next year as the defending champion! We hope everyone joins us in congratulating them for completing all of the stages and rest day goals, emerging as the overall victor.聽
The Mountain (or Trope) Classification was won by the wonderful boxhoy. A full completion, this competitor cleared every stage in this classification! Congratulations on your valiant effort; you also landed in second place on the podium for GC! We look forward to seeing what this competitor accomplishes next! Below is your accessory!
The Medium Mountain (or Prompt) Classification was won by the lovely hoelywritingsx! Having already won the Challenge Classification in the TDFFC, this wonderful competitor showed off her ability across multiple prompts by scooping up a different classification this time around. Look out for next year鈥檚 Giro- maybe her streak will continue? Below is her hard-earned prize!
The Hilly (or AU) Classification was won by @blackmojito81! As mentioned before, the rest day goals are a vital part of the Fanwork Classification- and that was how this competitor rose head and shoulders above their competitors! Congratulations for your dedication to this community, and your commenting profligacy! Below is your prize!
The ITT (or Challenge) Classification was jointly won by @fag-the-wholewideworld and @idk-why-im-here-can-someone-help! It was a close race, and it was a nailbiter of a finish (went all the way to a tiebreaker)! Both deserve praise for their bravery in attempting the difficult challenges! Well done!
The Rest Day Goals were met by two people- our resplendent maillot chispeante as well as @mundanememory, who both get these laurels to crown themselves with! Interacting with other works is a vital part of fandom and how a community grows, so we鈥檙e grateful that you two did so!
Thank you again to everyone who participated or at least followed along or read anything from this challenge- it was an honour and privilege for us to mod it! The Grand Tour season is over, and the next Fanwork Classification will be for the Giro next May. Keep an eye on this blog, however- we鈥檙e going to be reblogging events and challenges people might like to take part in over the offseason! Also, we may be brewing up a slightly different offseason event ourselves: watch this space for any recruitment we might be doing.
Until the next Grand Tour!

Stage 19- Classic Cycling AU
The final hilly stage is here, and the breakaway hopes to snatch a win while the GC contenders struggle and the sprinters hope they can crush the breakaway's feeble hope. It is the final stage of the AU category classification, and our competitors will be challenged with one of the more complex AUs this Vuelta- a Classic Cycling AU!
In order to pass this stage, your characters must be in the classic cycling era when they wouldn't be otherwise- anywhere from the 1930s to the 1970s! If the characters in your fic would be in that time period normally, feel free to simply move them to a different decade of cycling than the one they were active in. How do classics change? Does someone become the maillot jaune who otherwise wouldn't in the modern era? This AU is a tricky one, requiring a bit of research- but we're confident in our wonderful competitors to figure it out! Reach out and talk to us if you have any questions- there is no minimum word count for this fic.

Stage 18- Escape
The peloton is exhausted, with only the GC contenders and those looking to gain an elusive stage win not simply trying to survive. With the final stage of the prompt category classification, our competitors, especially those targeting the category, will be relieved to see the beginning of the end of the race for the maillot chispeante!
This prompt for this stage is escape. Who is trying to escape? What are they escaping from? Do they succeed? At what cost? All of this is for our lovely competitors to decide as they attempt to complete the stage! There is no minimum word count for this stage.

Rest Day- Comment on a Fanwork
As the riders rest up, so can our competitors from the business of creation. However, on this rest day, there is a vital goal both for the competitors in the other classifications as well as others to complete! This fanwork classification has produced a lot of fanworks, and it's important as a community to recognise them. The goal to achieve this day is to comment on a fanwork from this GT's fanwork classification (ao3 collection here, if you wish to comment on a Tumblr fic or fanwork please @ us so we know to count it). It's important to not just read and look at fanworks, but engage and comment on them in public! Feel free to comment on as many fanworks as you wish!

Stage 14- Lesson
The high mountains are behind the peloton, but before they can take their final rest day they have one more stage. With the medium mountain stage, our competitors must complete another stage in the prompt classification, with only two more after this. Have any category specialists swooped ahead to claim their prize? Or will the prompt classification fall to a GC contender unable to win the maillot chispeante? It's all up in the air for our competitors until the final deadline!
This stage's prompt is Lesson. Whether your characters are learning something, or being taught a lesson, we hope all of our competitors learn something from being on this journey with us! This stage has no minimum word count.

Stage 13- Enemies to Lovers
The high mountains beckon the peloton once more, as GC contenders weigh each other up and consider their chances. The competitors for the maillot chispeante are less lucky, as their GC won't become clear until the final deadline. As it is a mountain stage, our competitors will be attempting to create a fanwork based on a trope.
For this stage the trope is Enemies to Lovers. While we do usually allow complete subversion, please note that we will only be accepting works that have them be full enemies at some point during the fic/fanwork. Have fun聽 with it and contact us if you have any questions whatsoever! There is no minimum word count for this stage.

Stage 11- Patience
It's the Vuelta, so the peleton is going through mountains, hills, and more mountains- and today is a medium mountains stage again! For the competitors for the glitter jersey, that means they have another shot both at GC and at the prompt classification.
The prompt for this stage is patience. Whether patience is needed but sorely lacking, or already there, we're sure our competitors have it in abundance as they craft their submissions for this stage! Contact us on Tumblr or Discord if you have any questions. There is no minimum word count for this stage.

Stage 10- Accidental Marriage
The rest day is over! Too soon for some, but maybe the break was too much for others raring to attack this second week of the Vuelta! As the peloton attacks the mountains, our competitors for this GT's glitter jersey will attack another trope!聽
This stage's prompt is Accidental Marriage. How did they accidentally get married? What was their relationship like before the marriage? What is it like after? All up to you, our lovely competitors! As always with the tropes, feel free to subvert or play around with this as you see fit. If you have any questions on if your fanwork would fit into this prompt, feel free to ask us on Tumblr or Discord. This stage has no minimum word count.

Stage 4: Mutual Pining
As we head into the mountains, the GC favorites gear up to attempt to gain time on their competitors, and the glitter jersey is in their sites. And so, we have the first stage of the 'trope' classification.
Is mutual pining a trope, though? Or is it the true narrative engine underneath all shippy fanfic. Though you may not have time to write the long, drawn-out slow burn of your dreams, you can capture a glimpse of raw, aching yearning. Are they kept apart by fate? Team rivalries? Individual rivalries? Pure obliviousness and/or idiocy? It's up to you to decide.
There is no minimum word count for this stage. If you have any questions, ask on Tumblr or on the Discord!

Stage 3- Age Swap AU
The peloton is in the hills, and our competitors have another Alternate Universe coming up to whet their thirst! To pass this stage, competitors must create a fanwork based around an Age Swap AU. Who gets swapped in age, and to what extent the swap extends is completely up to you!
However, this is meant to be a permanent shift not a temporary change- so body swaps or time travel is not eligible for this stage. There is no minimum word count for this stage. Aside from that, feel free to be as creative as possible! If you have any questions, ask on Tumblr or on the Discord!

Stage 1: Create a Fanwork With Someone Else
The timer counts down, and the peloton is nervous. The prologue time trial is no place for any mistakes to happen- and those looking to make GC bids will be nervous that their bid could end here. For our peloton, all eyes are still on the maillot聽chispeante. But despite individual competiton being paramount in all other stages, this Individual Time Trial is a challenge stage. And thus, to remind all of our competitors that cycling is, despite how it often portrays itself, a team sport, the first stage in both the general and challenge classifications is to celebrate working together. Therefore, the challenge for this stage requires you to co-create a fanwork with another competitor.
In detail: if this account is tagged on Tumblr with a submission, it must clearly tag the co-creator (or if they are only on Ao3, link to their account). On Ao3, you must submit a work with a co-creator (which you can add by following the guidelines here). If a work is submitted without a co-creator for this stage, it will not count (and on Ao3 will be removed from the collection). If you're having any trouble adding a co-creator, please ask on Discord or on Tumblr! Best of luck! There is no minimum word count for this stage.

The Collection is Open!
Wave the flag, hire some dancers, and roll the participants up onto the stage in front of a roaring crowd of fans- The Vuelta a Espa帽a Fanwork Classification 2024 is officially open! This means that we are now accepting submissions for the General Classification. You can either @ us on here, with the stage number and prompt (or rest day goal) in your post, or post your fanwork as a response to the appropriate stage prompt in our Ao3 collection here. We wish all our competitors the best of luck for the long road to Madrid ahead!

Stage 21-Create a Fanwork in One Hour
It's the final stage! The last chance for anyone to make a change on GC, and for the time trial specialists, the last opportunity to win a Grand Tour. For the competitors for the maillot chispeante, it's their final chance to win it. And for the rest of our competitors, as it's an Individual Time Trial, it is the second and last of the stages in the challenge category classification. In time trials you race against the clock, and so our competitors in order to complete this challenge must race against the clock as well. To complete this stage, you must create a fanwork in one hour.
Some details- you are allowed to plan beforehand. However, as soon as you start writing (or drawing or recording, etc.) you must set a timer for exactly one hour, and stop when that timer goes off. You are allowed to do spell check after the timer has gone off, and similar small adjustments in other mediums, but no serious editing or cutting. This challenge relies on the honour system, as there is no way for us as mods to tell for sure that you stuck to the spirit of the challenge. However, if you really feel like you cannot post it unchanged from its hour format, please do not submit it for this stage and instead submit it for the free space on stage 5 instead. Embrace spontaneity, and post something rushed and maybe not perfect! We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with! There is no minimum word count for this stage.

Stage 20- Coming Out Fic
The peloton approaches its final mountain stage- and one of the last opportunities for the GC to shift in any significant way. For our competitors, it is the penultimate stage, as well as the final stage in the trope category classification. This stage, competitors will have to create something following the trope of Coming Out Fic.
This is a trope that has been around in fandom for a while, and the key is the reveal of a secret from being private to being public- it doesn't just have to be sexuality! While it could be a full coming out, it doesn't have to be to the entire public. It could be to a team, coach, friend, or family member. We look forward to seeing our competitors' creativity! Feel free to reach out to us on Discord or Tumblr if you have any questions. This stage has no minimum word count.
