It did make him feel a little better that she seemed to understand. Even if he knew that she can deal with other survivors easily. But there was always a chance of getting outnumbered. Sure she could deal with a person or two but if there's a group of them the odds could turn out different.

"But other people don't know about your condition. They'll still try to take advantage of you. Especially since you're still a kid"

Joel just knew what human nature was like. It was survival of the fittest out there. Kill or be killed. He had trouble keeping Ellie safe out there and he just wanted Bailey to be safe.

"But Teddy can't watch your back though."

She had to understand where he was coming from, she knew he wouldn’t bother her with this kind of thing just to be a pain in the ass. He cared and she appreciated the sentiment even if she didn’t always show it too well, as irritating as it can be it’s better to have someone pestering you over your safety than to have absolutely no one who cared about you.

Bailey heaved a sigh and dropped her head so to hide the eyeroll that she just couldn’t hold back, ❝ Yeah okay I will, ❞ The words slipped out somewhat quick with a few nods of her head, but her voice was soft.

There was a smile across her lips when her head popped up to look at a Joel, ❝ I think if there were other people out here, they should be more worried about running into me. ❞ A gesture is made toward herself with her thumb in a bout of confidence.

❝ Besides, I wasn’t totally alone, I always bring Teddy with me. ❞ She jested; she carried that stuffed animal around with her pretty much everywhere. Other people may think it’s just wasted bag space, but for her it was her most prized possession.

— ALTERNATE UNIVERSE, THE LAST OF US.

A thirty-six year old survivor living in a small community; generally not hostile to strangers, though capable of being a threat when it’s required of him to be, being extremely skilled in hand to hand combat/martial arts, and various forms of weaponry (most notably, firearms). Kogami was twenty-six years old when the apocalypse began. Pre-apocalypse, he neared the end of his career as a detective due to his disillusionment with law enforcement, questioning his loyalty to a corrupt state and establishment; when the infected and their panic reached his home, it drove a wedge further between himself and his past as he watched his friend and former subordinate, Mitsuru Sasayama get gunned down by soldiers and policemen meant to seek and secure survivors. The event has since traumatized him, and though he has the security of knowing most of his loved ones continue to survive, he’s haunted by his failure to protect Sasayama.

Since then, he has a general disregard for law enforcement authorities and works independently within a network of couriers and survivors across the country, performing smuggling jobs as need be; he refuses to kill humans if he must. For a short time (at age 30-33), he served as a Firefly, though he drifted away from them as well when he not only disagreed with their aimless anarchist practices, as well as his part in killing a Firefly leader (Makishima) for said practices.

he’s walking out of his house when he sees tommy walking with a man, someone who is definitely new to the  town, but not new to  him.

paul and him both fled from the fireflies for the same reason, partially ; they couldn’t condone what was being done with ellie. paul for his own reasons, ones brian has chalked up to him just being a  good-natured  person, and while brian did it partially for that reason, his main reason was knowing the fireflies and that place wasn’t safe for his  own  son. not after joel had taken out the lot of them in the hospital and  fled  with the only cure known to man. 

cigarette tapped out of the small package, he leans against the wooden pillar at the beginning steps to the stairs leading to his front porch, tucking the vice between his lips before igniting the end. he takes in a long drag as he watches them, waits until tommy gives paul what brian can only assume is a parting pat on the shoulder, and then he takes a jog down a few steps.  ❛  -- hey!  ❜  he doesn’t think that maybe the other man wants to keep his past under wraps, but he won’t make it too painstakingly obvious out in the open how  acquainted  they are. 

he has a certain  respect  for paul. he knows he’s someone with an even head, with common sense  -- he can be leveled with, on most things. he appreciates that about him. once they’re close enough that he doesn’t need to raise his voice, he gives him a nod, begins walking beside him.  ❛  didn’t think i’d see you here. -- didn’t think i’d see anyone from that place here.  ❜

THE LAST OF US  /  THE LAST OF US II VERSE.

                  endure & survive..

[ last of us part I set ]:  always headstrong, willing to do what she believes is right, even if those close to her see otherwise, anne joins the fireflies. she sees them not as terrorists, but as a means to an end. the government, what’s left of it -- if you can even call  them that --  they’re gunning down those who were once her people in the  streets, making others go  hungry.  she wants to stop it, she wants to be part of a greater cause. she believes the fireflies have the answers, the means to bringing this world back to something more stable. her brother, brian, doesn’t have much of an opinion. he only knows one thing: they need shelter, and people who at least act like they give a damn about them. 

anne trains with a man named jerry anderson to become a medic, given she knows a bit about the medical world already ( she worked in a doctor’s office before everything went to shit, as well as being in and out of the hospital throughout her life ; she picks up on it all very fast ). she trains along side a woman named mel, and becomes rather fond of jerry’s daughter, abby. 

when marlene brings word of a girl, one who could save the  entire  human race with her immunity, a means to a  cure  -- she’s ecstatic. what she doesn’t understand at first (  though she quickly picks up on  )  is what it means for the little girl who’s carrying this weight. it’s a weight, but it’s such a  gift, all the same. this is when she becomes torn. her brother, who has become a soldier, a protector of their world, is quick to default to his old ways. disobedient, defiant  --  it’s a  child, even if she is the cure to everything that’s plagued them for years. she should at least have a choice, he believes. 

the difference between anne and her brother is this: she isn’t one for violence. she likes to talk it out, come up with an alternate solution, some kind of compromise. “we should talk to her, jerry,”  she suggests, “we should ask her what she wants-- we should at least let her know,”  she pleads. but it’s jerry’s daughter, abby, that ultimately seems to persuade him. “if it was me, i’d want you to do it.” anne can’t necessarily disagree. 

[ the last of us part II set ]:  the murder of her mentor, jerry, hits her hard. even more than that, the change she sees happening in abby begins to break her heart. this girl she’s known since she was young, turning into this person who is dead set on one thing: revenge. it’s crushing, and no matter how hard she tries to persuade her from it, she’s stuck with her own internal struggle of putting herself in her shoes. if it was brian, her brother, she would be desperate for blood. yet, at the same time, she is able to understand the side of this smuggler who has come in and killed a countless number of her friends. if it was her child, she’d do just the same, no matter if she could be the thing that saves all of them. 

time passes, things change, and she finds herself a part of the washington liberation front ( her brother, brian, goes his separate ways after the incident with doctor anderson, but he still sees his sister regularly ; oddly enough, he finds himself in jackson ). she stays in touch with abby, with mel, and she helps when she can. she does her best to avoid the violence, the action of it all, but that proves to be difficult. especially when it’s found out by abby and the rest of her crew that anne’s brother is in the heart of the place they’re searching for. this puts a bit of a riff in her relationship with abby and mel, mostly.

     “Bailey, would you slow down... there’s nothing else out here except clickers.” The group that had gone before them had dealt with the runners, and even a couple of the clickers but it wasn’t like they had to be anywhere fast. “Also I’m very tired of running so if we could just slow it down so I don’t completely collapse from exhaustion that’d be great.

   She’d known Bailey for a few months at this point, happy to have some company as she travelled up north to reunite with her family, at least those who’d made it. Though they probably assumed that Judith was dead after getting trapped with some runners. “We need to find a place for the night anyways so... oh my God slow down!” Judith groaned quietly, jogging to catch up with her yet again.
