Hands slap to the bar top, mouth still slightly agape in disbelief as Anubis admitted to being the one behind the shenanigans on the chalkboard. But there's also a laugh bubbling through his system, imagining the CHAOS after witnessing such a thing live. Elliott's seen the replay — he probably would've at least laughed if it wasn't him falling out of bounds...and the loss didn't knock his rank down a few notches. "Yeah, well...I don't remember the last time we had even half of those stools filled anyway..." Perhaps they could spare to get rid of a few — maybe that'll help the place feel less EMPTY. His arms fold over each other as he slouches over the counter, chin settling atop them as he heaves out a sigh. His moping was short lived, however, a hand to his shoulder drawing the engineer's gaze over and upward to meet with the older man's. The question forces a deafening SILENCE between the two — the kind that rattles eardrums and numbs the other senses. "I-it's..." fumbled out, as too many other words simultaneously fill his mind. And the battle is evident, expression twisting into some cross between confusion and distress before he finally blurts out, "Have you...ever felt like, the WORLD is about to end? But...only for you?" The legend swings around on the stool, facing the other bartender but not quite looking at him anymore. "And like, it's not there yet, but — you can feel it? I mean, it's not going to. At least, not in a LITERAL sense...I don't think. But, maybe? I mean, f-fiv...fif — uh..." ...figuratively. He's RAMBLING. As if the longer he could babble on the longer he could avoid the conversation.
Anubis made a face at the comment and sighed. It was very true that business had been a little lax as of late, but Anubis did what he could to help Elliott keep it running. Things were just difficult, for everyone.
The words strike something deep within the older man and he forgot how little of his past the man knew. To the point that perhaps the laughter that escaped Anubis seemed probably cruelly timed. But, of course, Anubis knew something of such a feeling.
Perhaps it was once a constant fear of his, but he didn't really remember the years before he lost his family. Perhaps he had not thought his world was going to end until it had. Until he had lost everything. He sighed, leaning back against the bar. "Deep breath, think your thoughts," he urged the other.
"I know something of the like," he admitted. "It's not the best."

Apex Legends - ANUBIS
Born on Earth under a different name, a boy sought to escape a near-unlivable desert in one of the few ways he knew how - mercenary work. His first jobs were the bare minimum - the easy pickings - mostly courier tasks or the odd labor. He was fifteen the first time he held a gun and less than an hour older when he first killed someone with it. But from then on his work took on a similar hue. Different players, same game.
No one can say if he truly LIKED the work, but it kept him fed & honestly: he was damn good at what he did. Not the best by far, but the man now known as Anubis made a name for himself in more ways than one. He was one of many mercenaries hired by the IMC to fight in the Frontier Wars, during which he first crossed paths with Kuben Blisk.
After the Battle of Typhon, Blisk offered Anubis a place among the new Apex Predators, a position the mercenary was nervous to fill. He survived the life for half a decade before a tragedy sent him spiraling. Close friend, Evelyn Witt saved him from the worst of himself and found him a place to start anew in her brother’s bar.
It takes some time for the layers of old steeled mercenary to peel away, but by the time Elliott Witt takes over the bar, Anubis is a man no longer known for death, but for his dulcet voice, father-like demeanor and bad jokes.

Some time near the end of his career, Anubis found time to make a family. He had a wife and a young daughter who would end up killed in Solace City.
Blaming himself for not being there to protect them, Anubis spiraled out of control and without Evelyn’s steady hand, would’ve ended up dead.

When Elliott Witt first requested to join the Apex Games, he was denied. Anubis, having seen the boy’s character and penchant for hard work, sought out to convince Blisk to change his mind about him.
The agreement became an I-O-U between friends. A favor Blisk would call upon in the form of helping him save and protect Kit.

Evelyn Witt and Anubis meet the way all friends obviously meet - he’s part of a group of mercenaries hired to be her protection detail during the War.
The unlikely pair bond over his bad jokes and a near death experience. At the end of everything, she invites him home for holidays after he jokes he has no one to spend them with.
