Kaede was spending her afternoon in her research lab today, which of course included her own personal kitchen. She felt like having something sweet today, so she decided to make some swiss roll cakes; specifically strawberry shortcake kinds.
While those were baking in the oven, Kaede was slicing up some fresh strawberries to use for toppings, pondering if she might want to use whipped cream and chocolate or caramel syrups as well.
...Or at least, was trying to do that, but it was hard to focus when she was being stared hard at by Kokichi, a drop of sweat rolling down her cheek. Not that she minded him being in her lab, but it was kind of awkward being silently stared down at like that, especially since that’s basically what he’s been doing ever since he came in here.
So, putting her knife down for a second, she turns to fully look at him and ask: “D....D-Did you need something, Ouma-kun? You’ve been staring at me this whole time... it’s kind of weird.”

“Shuichiii....” As Kaede feared, she was exactly right: Shuichi hadn’t been sleeping nor eating. Much as she wanted to scold him for doing a very terrible job at taking care of himself, that could wait: right now, she needed to make him eat at lease something and make him sleep.
“O-Okay, okay, sit down...” She helps him over to the chair. If he was feeling dizzy, then standing definitely wouldn’t be good. “I’ll make you a quick meal. Then, you’ll get a good nap in, okay?”

“How do I know? Well...it’s obvious, isn’t it? You’re a detective, Saihara-kun: when you solve cases, you’re not going to please everybody, notably the suspect. I understand if you sometimes feel guilty if their motive was understandable, but that doesn’t mean they still should be allowed to get away with it, you know?”

Kaede of course didn’t know what it was like since she isn’t a detective, but: she can imagine it must be hard on Shuichi, especially when the boy is very empathetic and merciful. Not that she saw that as a bad thing, of course; but she honestly does worry about how much he blames himself for simply doing what a true detective should do.
