📁 Section 4, "Generating Frequencies on MacOS."

For this tutorial we will be generating the frequency files on UTAU-Synth. I will make a future followup tutorial for generating on OpenUTAU. Before we get started, lets talk about what frequency generation is!

Generating frequencies is the last step to completing your UTAU voicebank, but before we get into frequency generation, what are frequency files? Frequency (.frq) files are the frequency maintained by the program to reference for every render. Without generating the .frq files, the program, or other programs will either generate a strange .frq or crash. Also, I would like to disclose for this segment that .frq files can only be generated in UTAU-Synth, UTAU2008, and Speedwagon.

Since this tutorial series is dedicated to MacOS we will be generating our .frqs in UTAU-Synth.

Onto manual frequency generation, to generate your frequency files you can make a UST by writing all your samples into the UST like this. 

After you complete setting the samples into the UST, let it render once, and all your frequencies should be generated.

Q. How do I replace .frqs ?

A. .frqs can be replaced by going to the UTAU's folder, and searching for the desired .frq file. You can also batch select all .frqs by searching the, ".frq," extension within the UTAU's folder. After this, delete them, and repeat the generation.

*(Disclaimer, there is no .frq editor for MacOS.)

In UTAU-Synth, after generating all the frequencies, the program will generate, “.spef,” files, also known as, “specification files.” These files are not necessary, as they are exclusively generated in UTAU-Synth. It's recommended to select all the .spefs and throw them away.

Q. Why do you delete the .spef files ?

A. Since they're exclusive to UTAU-Synth, they will not be read on Windows. So, to save disk space and optimize your bank, deleting them will make the overall size of the folder smaller.

That concludes this segment on frequency generation! As of writing this, I have just found out it is possible to generate .frqs on OpenUTAU. So, I will be making a follow up tutorial on this when I get the chance.

Then you can try regular utau which can surprisingly run on a really old 2000s WINDOWS XP laptop of all things. (This is a photo from 2021 when I got this old laptop. It was 60$ on the web iirc?)

For that you’d have to go to control panel, change the locale to Japanese (this won’t change the language only the locale), then go to utau2008.xrea.jp and download version 0.4.18e and then you’ll be all set.

Openutau on the other hand just requires windows 10 or newer to run. So you’re stuck with the OG version from 2008 last updated in 2013.

How to Install UTAU (PC ver) on Mac with WineBottler

Go to http://utau2008.xrea.jp/ Under DOWNLOAD, click the blue text "v0.4.18e インストーラ" Wait for "utau0418e-inst.exe" to finish downloading. Open WineBottler, and go to "Advanced" Click select file and choose "utau0418e-inst.exe" Use installaiton mode "execute file (Installer)". Set the "Indentifier" to something you will recognize, especially if you have a lot of other WineBottler-ed programs. Wait for the UTAU installer to pop up. Most text will probably be replaced with boxes, because it can't read the characters. Ignore this for now. At some point you will see two options, (E) and (M). Choose (E). Let it install. Close the UTAU app after this is done. In Finder, go to wherever your .app is, right-click and choose "Show Package Contents". Navigate to "Contents/MacOS/" and open "startwine" in TextEdit. On line 7, add "export LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8" and save. Run UTAU.app. All Japanese text should render normally, so now you can use voicebanks that are kana encoded rather than romaji. I recommend moving voicebanks you want to use to "Application Support/(whatever you set the identifier to)/drive_c/Program Files/UTAU/voice" cause it's easier. TUTORIALOID 「how to install UTAU & SYNTH」

some enjoy vocaloid, however, it can get pretty costly, you have to buy the program, the voice banks, etc. and that’s annoying! the music is certainly nice, but wouldn’t it be great if you could make your own?

you can!

as you may or may not know, there is a program called utauloid (utau means sing in japanese!), and it’s a free alternative to vocaloid! unless you want to support the amazing creators, which is optional of course, however i recommend it! :)

this program works on both windows and mac computers. in this tutorial, i’ll explain common terminology, how to download voicebanks, etc.

FOR WINDOWS

first, you must go to http://utau2008.web.fc2.com/ which is where you’ll find the downloads page.

click “ダウンロード (daranro-do//download)” located at the top, and then click the most recent version. as a mac user, i do not know much about windows installations so if you have further inquiries, message me and i’ll sort you out.

FOR MAC

visit http://utaforum.net/threads/new-utau-synth-translation-project.11202/ in order to download utau synth, the mac version of utau. find the installation link and download the .dmg file. drag the icon to the application folder.

now that the base program has been installed, you’ll notice an error when you try to open the program. it will require a license key. this will expire every 30 days and you will have to renew it. this can be tedious. however, there is a solution.

if you are worried about a corrupted installation, visit http://utau-synth.com/download.html# to receive the license key (click 30日試用ライセンス to be directed to the monthly key).

if you’re ok with manually replacing the utau synth files, go to https://dantedesigns.net/nib.html and follow the instructions to rid of the 30 day license key.

VOICEBANKS

what are voicebanks and what do they do?

voicebanks are the folders that contain japanese syllables that allow for the sound to be played. there are a lot of complications that can happen during voicebank installation so i’ll address all of them later.

for this tutorial we will install kasane teto http://kasaneteto.jp/teto/voice.html which is like the hatsune miku of utauloid. click on the second link. it should say “TANDOKU”. i’ll explain what that is.

tandoku (often called CV) is one of the three kinds of voicebanks. there being CV VCV CVVC. C stands for consonant, and V stands for vowel. CV is easiest for beginners and you should stick with it!

next, we’re going to import the voicebank. this is where the problems come in. make sure your locale/region is set to japan. if not, there may be weird characters in place of the japanese ones. this is known in the utau community as mojibake (meaning gibberish in japanese). this problem rarely happens with mac computers, but when it does, it’s pretty easy to fix, depending on the situation. i fixed this problem by changing what unarchiver i used. some archivers unarchive .zip files differently and may misinterpret japanese characters. the b1archiver https://b1.org/ worked perfectly for me and works with windows as well.

now that you’ve installed and unarchived it, we have to import it!

to begin, create a folder called “voicebanks” and put your voicebanks in there. now, open up your utau program and click “select”. locate your “voicebanks” folder and select the unarchived file. now you’re ready to lay some notes down! my next tutorial will be all about how to create music in utau!
