So she probably buys food there for the Amalgamates. But I don’t think that Kanako would like the Glamburger… Would probably remind her of the Feisty Slider back home… Where her mother is… She would probably miss home even more…

General about/Tag info

While I started this blog with archival and elaborate tag systems in mind, it doubles as a general UTDR fanblog.

I do not tag spoilers for Undertale, the 2 currently released chapters of Deltarune, or pre-release promotional material (e.g. Ch3 screenshots from the newsletters). My exact policy for proper Chapter 3 / 4 spoilers will be decided when we get serious promo (like a trailer and/or release date), but I will tag temporarily.

"Mad Mew Mew" is her default form. Fanart of her pre-transition self is tagged additionally tagged as "Mad Dummy" the same way the "God of Hyperdeath" is also tagged as "Asriel". A similar policy applies to Mettaton (except his pre-transition form is simply tagged as "ghost" due to my naming scheme for his different looks).

In the first few months of this sideblog's existence, I had a different main blog. While I tried to copy-reblog everything I'd archived here, it seems to have fucked up this blog's search system and it only focuses on what I freshly reblogged here (the #tag system is fine). For the best experience in hunting for specific overlapping tags (e.g. "papyrus 2015" for Papyrus fanart from Undertale's release year), you may want to look through this blog as well as @gonermaker-goner . If you don't know how the sitewide tag system works, jump to the very bottom of this post.

I do not use apostrophes in my organizational tags. This is to lower the risk of them breaking. Instead of "#snowdrake's mother" it's "#snowdrakes mother".

No reblog tagged as "au:" or "oc:" is my creation in any way unless specified otherwise. On that note, I tag all fanfic-y UTDR media as an "au" even if it's meant to be a canon-compliant addition to the franchise for organization.

I’ve shared like 5 posts that apply, but I tag criticism of the fangame Undertale Yellow as “utyeller neg” for blacklist.

If a Deltarune fanart references the specific events or one-off locations of a certain chapter (fanmade take or official), it gets tagged as that chapter. Characters on their own are not considered to reference any particular chapter (except in the context of content that predates the chapter it relates to). While alternate styles usually count as chapter references (e.g. the Fun Gang's doctor/nurse outfits), Ralsei's black Ch1 form does not due to its widespread use.

I used to tag darkners on their own as “#dw”, but this changed to make the tag more useful. It now moreso applies to locations and dark world variants of lightners.

My logic for distinguishing between Undertale and Deltarune in character tagging can be inconsistent, but I'll try to explain my general thought processes. If the post predates Deltarune and isn't official, it's automatically tagged as "#ut" only. If it's a character that had a role in UT that wasn't practically teasing their DR one, it's also tagged as that unless indicated to be their DR self.

I usually use the queue to publish 16 reblogs throughout each day (24 hours), but this is subject to change. Exceptions include emptying my queue so seasonal posts can publish at a certain time or when I add commentary other than short compliments.

BYF-Adjacent

I block people from my main blog very liberally for filtering purposes, especially if they post Sans AU content in the main Undertale tag. You can only block someone from your sideblog by entering their username into your individual blog settings on the web version of Tumblr. Blocking someone from your main only makes it so you don’t see their activity; they’ll still be fully able to interact with the sideblog. If you reply to my posts or send me asks and I don’t respond or acknowledge it, it’s possible this is the case.

Among other ships, I casually enjoy Chara/Frisk content as they only become family in one ending (I do not ship it in the context of said ending). I tag it for organizational purposes, so feel free to blacklist #charisk. I do not support Chara/Asriel nor any other pedophilic/incestuous pairing.

While I very much doubt anyone who does this is going to read the BYF on my tiny est. 2024 UT/DR blog, please block me if you “headcanon” Frisk, Kris, or Chara as boys/girls or refer to them with gendered pronouns.

On Reposts

Tumblr is pretty much the only popular social media site that lets you reliably archive others' posts. Twitter has been a dumpster fire of extreme bigotry, unfixed sitebreaking bugs, and spam for years, yet so many incredible UT/DR artists have used and continue to use it. For this reason, I sometimes repost art from there with the creator's handle captioned and a hyperlink to the art piece. As you may have noticed, reblogs are off for these reposts as they're purely on my blog for archival.

I will take down any art piece if an artist asks me to or if they have an active tumblr of a similar nature. If the latter is the case and an onsite version of the art piece exists, please show me that as well.

Many of these posts are tagged with "tag later". This is so I can go back and add tags that are used by the general fandom (ex: "#flowey") weeks after posting so they don't clog anything up.

If you're new here and don't understand how Tumblr's archive/tag systems work, let me explain. (This all pertains to the browser version of Tumblr, the mobile stuff is limited and self-explanatory.)

Unless someone has certain opt-in privacy features enabled, their archive should be accessible by going to their blog and clicking the "Archive" button in the meatball/3 dots menu. Chara Laughs To Hide Pain

“I should have laughed it off, like you did...”. One single line with so much misinformation surrounding it. This line is interpreted in many ways, but only one of these interpretations is accurate, the one that claims that Chara is laughing to cope with pain. Here are the reasons why this interpretation best reflects canon lore.

The Majority Of Undertale’s Cast Copes Through Laughter

While it may be easy to write Chara off as a cold and unfeeling child at first, we have to look at the other instances of laughing in Undertale.

Toriel laughs when we kill her,

Undyne smiles as her body is fading away,

Mettaton smiles right before he explodes, 

Sans jokes around as he’s dying,

Two npcs in Snowdin comment on how everyone laughs to cope,

Snowdrakes Dad laughs about being a terrible father,

and this isn’t even every instance of this happening, this is only the main examples. Now we need to look at when Chara laughs and analyze why they were laughing.

Every Instance In Which Chara Laughs And The Context Behind Each One

To truly understand why Chara is laughing as a coping mechanism we have to look at every instance of them doing so. The first being in tape #3 in the true lab. 

Chara and Asriel are talking about when they accidentally poisoned their father, Asgore. Asriel comments on how he should’ve “laughed it off like Chara did”. Chara is laughing in this instance because they feel terrible for getting their Dad sick. They’re trying to make light out of a hard situation. This is proven by the fact that Chara chose to die the same way they poisoned their father, which from a psychological standpoint shows that they felt guilty and thought that the only way they could redeem themselves is through dying the same way someone they cared for almost did. It’s also worth noting that “laughing something off” could simply mean not taking something as seriously as it is. 

Whether or not they actually laughed or not it’s clear they were trying to make light of a hard situation, and likely trying to make the rest of their family not worry as much by doing so. The second instance is during the encounter with Snowdrake’s Mother in the true lab. 

What’s happening here is that due to immense distress from seeing the mother of someone who Chara is implied to have known in such a poor state they disassociate and assume Frisk is laughing. When they realize that Frisk isn’t laughing they say “you didn’t do that?” and then follow up with “But it’s not funny”. As you can see Chara directly states that it’s not funny after they realize what’s going on. This is also meant to be a direct parallel to the previously mentioned dialogue with Snowdrakes Dad. 

The last instance of Chara laughing is during the no mercy route. Chara smiles during encounters,

Chara laughs during the RG01 and RG02 encounter, 

Chara laughs at Flowey,

and Chara smiles when we meet them. 

While this may look bad at first, the actual reason Chara is laughing/smiling during this is quite depressing. As mentioned in this post Chara doesn’t actually enjoy killing. They’re in mental distress during this entire route. They’re watching their friends and family die after all. They start smiling when we encounter a monster because they have no hope left, they realize that we aren’t going to stop so there’s no point in trying anymore, they have to follow us. They laugh at RG01 and RG02 because they’re watching us tear apart a couple. It’s also a reference to the book Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. 

(This book seems to heavily inspired Chara’s character as well, as it deals with suicide, depression, knives, golden flowers, tea, and a trans character.) Chara laughs at Flowey because they’re watching us try and kill their brother, and we know they don’t really want to kill him because they hesitate before killing him later on. 

The smile Chara adorns when we meet them is the same one that the red demon npc who talks about coping through laughter has.

In both cases this smile is a mask, hiding the fact that the one who wields it has given up hope, they’ve surrendered to a cruel world and would rather hide themselves than deal with the pain they’re experiencing. In the case of the no mercy route, Chara has given up hope for a happy ending, for a way to stop us on our killing spree, and they’ve submitted to their purpose, power.

The Migospel Truth

So how do we definitively know that Chara laughs to cope? Look no further than the enemy, Migospel. This monster is a hard mode exclusive that is a replacement for Migosp. It acts differently in private then it does around other monsters, just like Migosp. The catch is that its way darker than you’d think it’d be. 

Migospel laughs to hide its pain around its friends and then when it’s alone it drops its ruse.  Here’s some of the other lines it can say via the Undertale wiki.

Now let’s take a closer look at what the name “Migospel” actually means. It appears to be a combination of the words “Mime” and “Gospel”. The “Mime” half of their name suggests that they’re mimicking something, or rather, someone. While “Gospel” would typically have religious connotations it also refers to a hyperbole for something that is true. So essentially Migospel is “A Mimic Of The Truth”. They are emulating the true behavior of another character. That character is Chara. Still not convinced? Look no further than this parallel:

In conclusion Chara laughs to hide the pain, this is evident by the other uses of laughing as a coping mechanism in Undertale, the situations in which Chara laughs and the context behind them, and the fact that Migospel is a parallel to Chara.

Remember that one silly game undertale?

Preface

This was compiled by two friends on little sleep and an unwillingness to cite sources. It’s been six years since Undertale came out and like two days since Deltarune Ch 2 came out, so I ask for a bit of forgiveness.

Please tear this apart. Many of the insane ideas presented here are gonna be stated like it’s fact, but I want to be clear that I am fully aware that they’re not. As the incantation goes, it’s a theory. A game theory.

UT means Undertale. DR means Deltarune.

PT 1: Undertale’s Comparisons to Deltarune

From the beginning, Deltarune has felt strange. In DR, well-loved characters carry out facsimiles of the roles they played in UT, and the UT characters are usually in a better situation. For example, Asgore runs a failing flower shop in DR, while he is a kingly gardener in UT. In DR, Mettaton has no fans and no apparent glamour as he does in UT. Catty and Bratty aren’t friends. Aaron has no muscles. Blooky is a cop. As such, DR almost feels like a stilted version of UT, where they are no longer characters in a wild, better fantasy.

The most interesting differences are in time and in death. In DR, Gerson is dead. He was the previous history teacher who taught at the school Kris and Asriel attends/attended. Rabbit Girl walks Cinnamon in UT Snowdin. In DR, we see a larger Cinnamon who complains that his sister no longer walks him because she grew up.

There are also the Amalgamates. The graveyard in DR has three gravestones beside Gerson’s: Crystal, Shyra, and Muttler. Each of them correlate to one of the Amalgamates from UT: Snowdrake’s mother, Shyren’s sister, and Endogeny respectively.

It is also important to note that monsters in DR have not yet used magic in the light world. Susie, Noelle, and Ralsei have only been shown to use magic in the dark worlds. As far as fans know, monster magic is something that only exists within the dark worlds and is nonexistent otherwise. There is also no confirmation if monsters turn to dust in DR.

In short, just remember that Undertale feels like a glamorized past version of the town we see in Deltarune.

PT 2: Ralsei = Asriel

Or, more precisely, they are both mental constructions of the same person: Asriel from DR. If this doesn’t make sense, read on.

The basic similarities are their names, appearances, and speech.

DR Asriel is older than Kris and has gone off to college but is returning to visit soon. He was fairly popular and successful. He is very penitent: he regularly confessed inconsequential “sins” to the local priest.

What do we know about Ralsei? Honestly not much. However, we do know that he knows a lot. Almost all explanations of how combat, the dark world, or the fountains function come from Ralsei. He is also determined to become friends with Kris and tries to be kind to whoever he meets.

Suspend your disbelief, but what if Ralsei is Asriel? It would explain where he comes from; he’s a lightner so he has to come from Kris’s world. And due to his age, he may have discovered and explored the Dark World before Kris did. That’s why he knows/explains so much.

It’s shown that monsters are capable of creating dark worlds: Queen tries to make Noelle make one and Berdly almost does so in DR Ch 2. In both cases, Queen and Berdly were trying to make an ideal world for themselves, suggesting that those who make a dark world have some sway over what’s within it. Ch 1 and Ch 2’s dark worlds were created by The Knight until they were abandoned.

Here comes the theory. Either Asriel or Kris created Ch 1 and Ch 2’s dark worlds so that Kris can finally be the center of the story and make friends. Ralsei repeatedly shows that he wants to be closer to Kris, which would make sense since he’s gone off to college and has not seen Kris in a while.

This is a minor point but In UT, Asgore was shown to suck at naming things. It seems Asriel inherits that trait by naming himself Flowey in UT. So if DR Asriel changed his name to Ralsei to fool his own sibling it would be pretty fucking funny. Also interesting to note, Ralsei has prominent pink horns. In flavor text, we learn that Kris previously owned a pair of fake red horns to fit into the Dreemur family.

The world of Undertale, on the other hand, is Asriel’s original Dark World, based on the entire DR town. The entrance to it is the bunker at the bottom of the town, leading underground.

PT 3: Undertale as Asriel’s Creation

Remember this?

In short, just remember that Undertale feels like a glamorized past version of the town we see in Deltarune.

That’s why.

Gerson is alive in UT because he was alive when Asriel was in town. Cinnamon is small and is walked by his sister because that’s how Asriel remembered him. Toriel and Asgore are queen and king in UT because to a child, that’s how parents feel like. Librarby because that's a hard word to spell as a child. Magic apparently exists only in dark worlds, including UT. Perhaps Asgore sucks at naming things because it’s really Asriel doing it.

UT Pacifist is a story of hope and change brought on by Frisk, an outside source. As an example, Toriel and Asgore have a chance to reconnect in UT Pacifist while in DR Toriel clearly wants absolutely nothing to do with Asgore. UT Pacifist Flowey finds someone who truly believes there is good in him, despite his efforts to appear otherwise.

UT Neutral is a static world: forever hoping for freedom that it can never achieve. In fact, if UT is a dark world, that would explain how Neutral Frisk can pass through the barrier without fusing their soul with a monster. It’s just that darkners couldn’t pass into the real world unaided while lightners could travel freely.

UT Genocide is the culmination of Asriel’s worst fears about himself, ending in even Flowey’s own demise as he realizes there are people far crueler than he can imagine.

UT was once an ideal world (because it was a dark world) until both Chara and Asriel died on the same day, which plunged the kingdom into despair. Perhaps, back when DarkWorld!Asriel was a goat and not a flower, he attempted to bring Chara, a darkner representing Kris, out into the real world but shit went south. It’s shown that darkners lose their forms while in the light world and turn to stone in other dark worlds. From that guilt, Asriel believed himself to be irredeemable and turned into Flowey.

Flowey is the person that Asriel believed himself to be: vile and manipulative and without a soul. This lines up with his guilt issues irl. Also in DR, Asriel’s computer shows a final boss with rainbow wings, which describes his final form in UT.

DR has repeated themes about inevitability and having no agency within the “normal” world. Ch 1 and Ch 2 end pretty much the same no matter what route you choose. However, what does get influenced by player action are the dark worlds: fantastical adventures created by lightners to appease their own desires or, perhaps, to reflect their own issues. As such, UT contrasts with DR because it is a dark world: somewhere capable of change.

So, the Amalgamates. Asriel harbors a lot of useless guilt as shown by his confessions to the church. Amalgamates could be personifications of that senseless guilt/dread associated with dead people you knew from afar. Alphys’s overwhelming shame and guilt over being unable to save the amalgamates may mirror Asriel’s own feelings as an overly sympathetic teen.

What about the fallen children? Due to the flowers in DR Asgore’s shop that correlate with soul colors and Toriel’s dislike of Asgore, I imagine that Asgore fucked up with some human children at some point in their relationship. This is also considering the book in the DR Librarby about raising humans, which contains a photo of unfamiliar humans that Kris seems uncomfortable with.

What about Sans and Papyrus? In DR, they only recently moved into town. So if Asriel made this dark world when they were younger, they shouldn’t exist in UT. I theorize that Sans and Papyrus were added to the world after its initial creation, which fits with how the UT brothers just moved into Snowdin and almost nothing is known about their history. UT Sans perhaps noticed this discrepancy and figured out that there is something not quite right with the reality he lived in. He realized he was a darkner with little to no agency compared to Flowey, and later to the Anomaly.

Gaster and the Lost Souls may have been one of those discrepancies. Glitch sound effects associated with them play when you call in the dark world and in front of the bunker in DR.

Jevil and Spamton are rather interesting as well. I believe they are darkners who have realized the limits of their world. Jevil talks specifically about “CHAOS,” which Ralsei says may potentially end the world, and attaining “freedom,” referring to the dark world he resides in as a prison.

Very interesting dialogue states that the body that Scamton NEO inhabits was once loved greatly by a lightner, then was abandoned for some reason. Due to Scamton’s connections to Mettaton, both in name and theme song, that lightner might’ve been Mettaton himself. This does not necessarily mean that Mettaton entered the dark world or created it; a representation of his desire for a certain body might’ve been one of the objects used to create the dark world. Again, UT Mettaton is his ideal self, aided by Asriel’s imagination, while DR Mettaton hasn’t realized his dreams at all.

Scamton also is very fixated on freedom like Jevil. He tries to take Kris’s soul. This parallels UT Monsters’ desire to take Frisk’s soul to escape the underground. Perhaps Darkners who take Lightner’s souls are able to travel to the real world.

PT 4: The Anomaly

The anomaly is the Player, or the red heart.

UT Genocide Sans mentions an anomaly that fucks up timelines and pinpoints them on you. In DR, Kris performs individual actions when they rip their soul (the red heart). They are being possessed by you, and they rip you out so they can have agency and steal some bscotch pie. Chara is not someone possessing Genocide Frisk in UT. Rather, they are a representation of the Player’s absolute control over both Frisk and Kris.

So who is Frisk? In the world of this absolutely bonkers theory, no clue. Maybe just some random kid who stumbled into Asriel’s dark world. Maybe they were a younger Kris.

PT 5: Potential Implications to Deltarune’s Lore (For Funsies)

Asriel thought Undyne and Alphys were a good match before they even met.

Asriel kept Burgerpants at a shitty retail job in his fantasy world, despite reportedly being his friend.

Asriel might’ve never met Sans and Papyrus. The versions within UT are just stuff he’s heard about them, perhaps from Toriel.

It is implied that in DR Alt Route, lightners that are slain within the dark world also die in real life. This may have connections to the fallen children within UT and/or Dess, a family member of Noelle’s who seems absent from her life.

The Gyftrot, a reindeer monster in UT, is rather memorable for being outright bullied by other monsters. This may have something to do with Dess. It also may have to do with Noelle’s mother, which seems less likely.

Ralsei’s doomsaying and prophesying may be completely untrue. He might be saying shit so the adventure sounds more epic. However, he does seem genuinely distressed when Berdly tries to make his own world.

PT 6: Future Chapters

Ch 2 ends with Kris creating a Fountain. It might be another fake-out, but the next dark world will probably be set within the TV in Toriel’s house. Maybe we’ll get tidbits of Kris lore from that dark world.

The double doors in Asgore’s flower shop, to the hospital rooms, to the church, to the mayor’s office, or to Noelles’s house are potential other entrances to future dark worlds. I imagine that Ch 5 will be when Deltarune finally opens that fucking bunker and disprove every single thing in this theory, if it isn’t done so by noon tomorrow.

Fuck it. Who fucking knows.

1- I like to believe in the fan headcannon that Amalgamate Kanako is the Amalgamate that tucks Frisk into bed in Undertale.

2- Since Kanako is a Boss Monster I like to believe that she's strong enough to keep her body in "check" without needing to fuse with the others to stay alive.

3- She's literally just a child. I think the other Amalgamates would try to take care of her. Also she's probally having a really hard time because she recently lost her father and now she can't even see her mother. Again... SHE'S JUST A CHILD.

it’s really rare that I feel like rambling ideas without someone prompting me or at least having some art to show for it, but I got a new swap idea a couple days ago and kinda feel like I want some thoughts on whether it’s any good or not, I guess? :>;;

I was thinking about how Rudy seems unlikely to survive in Deltarune and is already dead in Undertale, and that it’d be nice if he got to actually live in Underswap since characters like Asriel and Chara get to enjoy that luxury. so after going through which UT characters have family members and I haven’t already swapped, I‘m considering swapping the Holiday family with the Snowdrake family in Underswap MH ❄️

here’s some very early ideas I’m not calling canon yet:

Rudy < - > Snowdrake’s father (might just call him Mr. Snowdrake in-universe)

in place of Snowdrake’s father being a comedian at MTT Resort, Rudy works as a dad-jokey daytime DJ at Club Spook, and lives in Snowdin Town with his daughters. in post-pacifist when Asgore resumes his role as monsterkind’s Santa, Rudy gets to know him and works alongside him as his Rudolph.

like UT Rudy, Mr. Snowdrake fell down a few years before 'game' events, though this happened before Undyne’s experiments. he was an old friend of Toriel, despite not being fond of her punny sense of humour.

Noelle < - > Snowy

[note that Noelle would specifically replace only the first Snowdrake encounter, leaving other individuals of the Snowdrake monster species to appear unswapped as repeated encounters]

Noelle is a young child around the same age as Chara, and is trying to be brave by exploring Snowdin Forest on her own when she runs into Chara by accident. she's too timid to respond to any acts, but if Chara waits a turn she'll try to calm herself down by singing a festive song, and can then be spared by singing along with her (basically functions the same as Snowdrake encounters).

Snowy is a teen monster who Chara does not meet Underground, but Toriel knows him via his parents and appreciates his puns. in post-pacifist she's glad he gets to see the sun and the surface, like how UT Asgore talked about UT Noelle in the winter alarm clock dialogue.

Mayor Holiday (I’ve seen some headcanons/fanworks name her Carol) < - > Crystal (canon name for Snowdrake’s mother in Deltarune)

Carol wasn't a mayor like her DR counterpart, but she was a leading community figure in Snowdin Town. after falling down (possibly from overworking herself) she replaces Crystal as one of the Amalgamates, and later reunites with her daughters at the end of the pacifist route. as an Amalgamate her personality has mellowed, but her strict, hardworking attitude can show through at times.

unlike her UT and DR counterparts Crystal is alive and well, living with her son Snowy. since her husband's passing she remains friends with Toriel, and encourages her son's comedic hobbies.

Dess (referred to by DR Rudy and Noelle, and UT Asgore mentions Rudy has more than one daughter, so I’m thinking an older sister for Noelle) < - > Chilldrake

like UT Chilldrake, Dess only appears in-battle if Noelle is killed, and likewise is a one-time encounter. though she doesn't wear UT Chilldrake's sunglasses, she's the cool big sister type and very protective of Noelle, hence trying to follow her into Snowdin Forest from a distance to keep her safe.

Chilldrake is another unseen monster, but like his UT counterpart is friends with Snowy.

...if I’m being honest half the reason I started on this thought process was that I’m beginning to very lowkey ship Asgorudy and wanted to figure out a way they could be less tragic, so of course I turned to Underswap </3 as with everything else in this post I’ve not decided if that’s what will happen, but if I go with these swaps then the groundwork is there to potentially develop them at least (and obviously there’s more to this than just a ship)

anyway thoughts on whether this sounds vaguely interesting or not would be appreciated o/

Bonely Hearts Club: Rewrite the intro with my Sona as the player.

UT: Prequel on the other 6 Human Souls and their journey through the underground. Start with Chara and add from there. Explore Gaster and Determination Experiments. Also explore side characters like Snowdrake's mother, Endogeny, Goner Kid, etc.

Surface Tale: Monsters integrating into society, learning about humans, etc.

Personal AU (Currently Unnamed)

Fanfiction Series: Alternate version where the Humans lost the war, and Monsters got to stay on the surface. Instead of Frisk falling, it's Sans who falls and needs to befriend the main 7 humans in order to help free them.

Another thing I love about the narrator Chara theory is that it’s implied that several characters in Ut, Chara included, laugh to cope with sad or distressing situations (e.g. Mettaton saying he’s so struck with grief he cant stop laughing, Snowdrake’s father laughing about being dissapointed in his son and saying its not funny, Chara and Asriel accidentally poisoning Asgore and Chara laughing it off) and when you choose to laugh at one of the Amalgamates, the narrator says that Frisk laughs hard and is surprised when they dont do that. When you laugh again, the narrator says “but its not funny”.
