「The Liar Knight and the Blind Archer」(pt. 1)

(TW: blood, eye injury)

The Galra and Alteans are two conflicting kingdoms separated by a forest guarded by warriors on respective sides. Keith is an elite Galra knight-spy and Lance is an Altean commoner who sneaks out to hunt in the forest for his family, even if it's forbidden by Altean law.

Whenever he's on a shift alone, Keith sometimes sings to himself, and one time, Lance, during a hunt, gets lost a bit too deep into the forest and picks up Keith's voice. However, Keith is stationed very high up on a cliff, so Lance can only listen from below and not see who the voice belongs to. Once the singing ends, Lance returns home, but the song stays in his mind.

Lance returns to the spot again and again during his next hunts to listen silently, but one time, he is not able to help himself and surprises Keith by speaking up without meaning to, complimenting the song, and even if Keith is startled at first and prepares for a fight, he soon realizes that Lance doesn't know who he is and that he's just an Altean commoner.

They gradually become friends, maintaining their odd little arrangement: Lance staying at the bottom of Keith's cliff while listening and not getting to see Keith himself, and for a while Keith is content with that, even though they're from opposite sides. In their peaceful spot in the forest, it’s as if the war doesn’t exist.

But Lance one day decides to be dare to try and see who the singer in the forest is. Is it a fae? Maybe a prince from a secret kingdom? He's read so many fairy tales that he gets giddy thinking of the possibilities, and while Keith sings his usual song, Lance silently climbs up the cliff.

But of course Keith isn't prepared to see Lance's hand come up the side of the cliff, and he panics as realization sinks in. Lance will find out he's Galra! He remembers a story Lance had shared to him once---how Galra soldiers had infiltrated his village, which was one of the small ones in the Altean outskirts, and had devastated everything---and so Keith is well aware of just how Lance feels toward the people of his kingdom. He thinks of how Lance's perception of him could change once he knows, and in his panic he lashes at him to make him stay back, the attack hitting Lance’s eyes and taking away the one thing he prides himself on as a hunter.

Keith watches horrified as Lance screams in pain and falls down to the base of the cliff, but when Keith moves to help him, he hears voices---Altean soldiers who came to inspect the noise. Keith has no choice to leave before they could see him, all the while desperately apologizing to Lance repeatedly in his head.

Days pass, and Keith remains consumed by guilt and memories of what had happened in the forest, and so, despite knowing well the dangers of what he's about to do, he sneaks into Lance's village to search for him.

He finds that the village, despite being small and in the outskirts of the Altean kingdom, has become more heavily guarded due to news of Lance's incident. He soon tracks down Lance's house and finds him sitting alone in the kitchen, bandages wrapped over his eyes.

Lance senses Keith's presence but thinks it's his mother instead, and he says that she doesn't have to check up again on him, he can take care of himself, and he's sorry he can't help their family attend to their meager field for food. He’s sorry too that they no longer have fresh meat to eat, and that she’s probably worrying about having to barter something at the market for scraps of deer or goat again.

Keith finds out from Lance’s ramblings that his hunting trips to the forest were illegal and that the kingdom would have given him a much harsher punishment had it not been for his injury. Keith's heart breaks, and he finally speaks to say that he's not Lance's mother.

He does not expect Lance's face to brighten up at the sound of his voice. "It's the prince from the forest!" he says, like a child. Keith is flustered. Prince?

Lance stands up, excited, and almost trips over his own feet. He awkwardly walks toward where Keith is, and in shock, Keith almost yells at him to stay where he is. Lance may not see his form, but if he gets close enough to touch Keith, he'll know he's Galra.

Lance stops, but his bright smile from earlier turns into a frown. Keith is about to apologize, for raising his voice, but even more so for what he had done in the forest, when Lance asks, "It did not hurt you, did it?"

"What?" Keith says, confused. 

"The thing in the forest," Lance replies. "The thing that attacked me. Please tell me it didn't hurt you too. Please tell me you're okay."

Keith is surprised. He came expecting Lance to be angry at him, to lash out at him even, but instead here he is, worried for his sake. And Keith finds himself fearful of losing that kindness, of losing the bright smile Lance directs at him.

So he breathes in, and he says, "No, I'm alright."

Lance's smile returns, and Keith feels a warmth bloom in his chest. Lance says, "Thank goodness. I thought it had hurt you too, since they told me they didn't find anyone else.

"But what brings you here, prince?" Lance asks. Keith hesitates a little, not knowing exactly what to say, since his visit was largely an impulsive decision. "I...I wanted to see how you were doing...I was worried," is what he settles for.

Lance's face---the parts of it not hidden behind the layers of bandages---turns a bright red. "Thank you. You didn't have to trouble yourself, prince." He smiles, but Keith can see the sadness in it. "I've been told that my eyes have been damaged severely, and my only hope of healing lies with the kingdom's alchemists. But they're certainly busy with the war with the Galra. And even without that, it will take a miracle for them to listen to a request from a small town like ours."

Guilt weighs down on Keith's shoulders, but a thought suddenly occurs to him: he's heard from other knights about the magic of the Altean alchemists, and how their own druids have studied it and developed their own to combat against it. Surely, someone like their kingdom’s Great Witch Haggar will know of a way to cure Lance's eyes!

"I think I know someone who can help," he tells Lance.

"Really? Who is it?"

"I...I can tell you right now, but I need you to trust me."

Only then does Keith realize how unbelievable it all sounds, this stranger offering a cure he cannot name. For a moment, he thinks Lance would vehemently reject the proposal.

Until he hears, in a soft voice, "I trust you."

Keith is so relieved and happy. He can help Lance regain his sight and make amends for what he's done. "Thank you! If you want, I can take you to her right no---"

He moves toward Lance to take him by the hand, but he quickly stops. He can't touch Lance, nor can Lance touch him.

No, Lance would definitely find out he's no prince from the forest, and then all will be over. He won't be able to give Lance his sight back.

What can he do?

He thinks of the Great Witch Haggar again. As a knight, he has not given much thought about the peculiarities of magic, but perhaps she can help him out of this predicament.

"Is something wrong, prince?" asks Lance.

"No...it's nothing. I...I just realized that I need to prepare some things first. For the journey. I might have gotten too excited just now. I'll need to get some things in order, and then I'll return for you.

"But...I need you to promise me one thing. Promise me not to tell anyone about this. If anyone else finds out, I will not be able to help you."

"...I promise."

Then, reluctantly, Keith bids him goodbye, and with one last glance back at Lance,, Keith runs back as fast as his legs can carry him to the kingdom of the Galra.

Japanese Games, Developers, Artists Celebrate Valentine’s Day 2020

Here’s your fill of Valentines 2020 themed cute girls artwork and illustrations published by various Japanese studios and developers.

Valentine Day 2020 happened and as usual when such events rolls around, Japanese games studios, artists, character designers and developers all shared some Valentine-themed artwork on Twitter. Mobile and gacha games all do their own events too, revealing new illustrations for their characters. In Japan, Valentine Day is about women giving presents to men, with White Day on March 14 being the opposite, so the vast majority of artwork feature female characters. However, we have some male characters too. DualShockers compiled for your viewing pleasure various Valentines 2020 themed illustrations, gameplay videos, and a few bonuses, so you don’t have to set out for Twitter by yourself and face the cruel battlefield devoid of love that is social media.

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive when it comes to gacha games, or else we’d be there until Valentine’s Day 2021. Moreover, a few of the illustrations are pretty raunchy, so you might think twice before scrolling down.
