Mal's Ebonsong Lore Essays - Werebeasts
Written with the goal of appearing similar to how a similar essay would be written in-universe. As such, some things that will be confirmed in-fic will not be confirmed here.
Throughout Tamriel, there are two primary types of werebeasts - setting aside the morphological variants such as wolves, bears, deer, and suchlike - the Diluted and the Pure. This distinction functions similarly to the analogous types of vampires, with a key separation: while vampires can be created by many of the Daedric Princes, werebeasts are always the product of Hircine in some way or another. Diluted werebeasts are the most common, overwhelmingly so. They are those created by pacts and bargains with a third party - such as the Glenmoril Coven in Skyrim - and those more than one generation removed from a Pure werebeast. In essence, they are any werewolf not turned directly by Hircine himself or one of his rare demiprinces. Naturally, on the opposite side of this hide sits the Pure werebeasts, who are any werewolf turned directly by Hircine or one of his demiprinces. There is not overmuch different from the outside between the two types. Those who are turned by a Pure werebeast seem to be termed interchangeably.
All werebeasts, according to their creature variant, can identify the nature of each other - most commonly by scent. In this way, they can also identify other people around them, smell emotions, and differentiate vampires from mortals. It is reported that to werewolves and werebears at least, each individual has a defining scent made up of four otherwise unremarkable fragrances. Should that individual be a werebeast, the smell of teakwood underlies those four, and should that individual be a vampire, the underlying smell is petrichor. Certain emotions have smells - as reported, fear is bitter and arousal serves as a situational fifth smell to an individual's distinct profile.
There are a handful of traits that those who know what to look for will find present in a werebeast's mortal form, with the prominence being tied to two factors: relationship with bestial side and whether the werebeast is Diluted or Pure. In addition to the aforementioned increased sense of smell, the traits that no werebeast can control are an enhanced sense of hearing and the ability to see more clearly in dim light as if it were lit by the glow of the moons even when indoors. It is the traits that can be visible to others that are able to be controlled, the method of which shall be discussed momentarily. These include pointed and extended eyeteeth, body hair that takes on a texture and density more like fur, claws instead of fingernails, and a few other possibilities depending on the nature of the mortal form.
Atop the physical traits that affect a werebeast's mortal form are the mental and emotional ones. On days and nights when Secunda is no fuller than half, it is reported that even those who fight against their bestial nature feel and behave the same as they did before their turning. However, as Secunda nears fullness, particularly in the three days before a proper full moon, a werebeast will have a shorter patience, more restless nights, increased aggression and affection, and will adopt more mannerisms typical of the animal that their bestial side takes the shape of.
The way in which a werebeast can control these traits is fairly simple. Pure werebeasts have a tendency to have both more prominent traits and the ability to influence them more, with one rumour claiming that they can very nearly transform outside of the full moon should they desire. Diluted werebeasts are given two options: leash their bestial nature or accept it - some claim that 'befriend' is a better term, but as the bestial 'side' is not a second personality nor a second identity, that may be only a concept for those who personify it more than most.
Should a werebeast be in good control or have good synergy and acceptance with their bestial nature, the full-Secunda transformations will be easier - in some cases to the point of being entirely painless - and they will retain their mortal sanity, mind, morals, and awareness despite the bestial form. Should they not fall into either of those categories, when Secunda rises full, the werebeast will be reduced to instinct and animal tendencies alone, albeit with an increased intelligence than the animal they half-mimic. Violence or pacifism in such times are almost entirely situational, but if the werebeast is distressed by the transformation, that distress will carry through. Similarly, should a werewolf or other werebeast designed after a social animal find themself facing a full Secunda without anything to call a pack, herd, or suchlike, that transformation will be more difficult and more likely to be painful no matter how in-control or synergised they are with their bestial side.
All werebeasts have a presence to them that mortals and other beings such as vampires will notice with varying levels of consciousness. A vampire will be able to identify a werebeast with much more ease than a mortal overall, but it is possible for a mortal to train their senses and awareness to pick out werebeasts from a crowd if they have sufficient exposure and time. More often than not, this presence leads to the werebeast having a stronger force of personality - particularly toward intimidation and persuasion - than they did as a mortal. The intimidation factor particularly increases in those three days before Secunda rises full.
When a mortal is turned into a werebeast, they have until the following full Secunda to cure themself as they would from any ordinary infection. After that first transformation has passed, the options for someone who does not wish to be a werebeast narrow considerably. The Reachfolk are known in the right circles to have a few manners of half-cure, which oftentimes that the form of a ritual that binds the werebeast's bestial nature to the single night of transformation only. The Companions of Whiterun claim to hold the knowledge for one such ritual, and will offer it when they feel it necessary, alongside a potion that they claim will force the werebeast to sleep through the transformation until dawn. The offshoot of Vigilants known as the Silver Hand - known rivals in werebeast hunting to the Companions - claim that the only cure is death and are rumoured to find the best such cure to be the most painful one.

9, 11 and 14 for The Judge? 👀
ok i didn’t consider this possibility because i block The Judge from my thoughts recently legitimately got too much shit going on to think about this brain tumour. it’s complicated for these games because The Judge is not a character per se, but more of a. concept? you know when the main antagonist in a story is not a person but like. a ravine vs characters on a mountain hike. that’s what i mean except replace the ravine or anything natural with The Judge. so, the only one of these i think i can do is 11!
11. What was your inspiration for your OC?
i actually filled out a small template that asked exactly this during the judge’s creation a while ago, so you can have that haha

not big on aot for many reasons, but i remember being disgustingly obsessed with that specific thing when season 1 came out and i watched it for the first time and i think it definitely is connected to whatever is going on here lol. fujimoto’s drawing directly spawned the actual concept for this idea very recently, while holden (i came up with the judge thing before thinking of this connection but retroactively yeah probably got subconsciously inspired and snatched the title judge there yeah lmao. it’s good! though they’re very very different haha) and kyubey are more like. general past obsessions that i think lead to this thing much like the aot situation. and then as a bonus all my fears and despairs and the general feeling of absolute hopelessness too for good measure. self explanatory i think. yay!
#oc: the judge#i feel like my head is going to explode every time i use that tag. i shouldn’t but i will simply for categorisation purposes lmao#fantastic-mr-corvid

believe it or not but assigning morality to phones/phonemes isn’t the haha quirky little joke you think it is!
#like that has uh. a History!#elli rambles#there are definitely some Posts in the linguistics tag sometimes.#it definitely isn’t the most egregious example I’ve seen/heard and the op probably didn’t mean anything by it but. hm!#haha funny alignment chart. now quick tell me what you think about foreign languages. or the sapir-whorf hypothesis perhaps.#ok to take off my Silly Mask for a moment: what I’m getting at with those understatements is that assigning morality/any qualities really to#language has a bigoted—& more specifically: usually racist—history. language has often been used as a tool & justification for oppression.#take a look at the languages currently & historically deemed ‘pretty’ or ‘civilised’. compare that with the ones deemed ‘ugly’ or ‘barbaric’#who speaks them? exactly which features make them ‘worthy’ of those adjectives? is it only phonetics? if so: in what way exactly?#is the categorisation of sounds of speech as having certain inherent qualities truly objective—or do they happen to align with certain#cultural or personal biases? what purpose does this categorisation serve?#are a people deemed ‘barbaric’ because the language they speak is inherently & objectively barbaric—or is it perhaps the other way around?#could this type of view of a language possibly be used to justify the subjugation of its speakers under the guise of ‘civilising’ them?#Perhaps?#which is obviously not to say phonetic features are the only ones used to assign certain qualities to languages! but it was what the post#I’m referencing was about so#anyway sorry I went off on a tangent. can u talk a bit more about working as a bibliographer? like what does that actually entail?
so the bibliography i worked at was affiliated with the major academic professional society of my subfield, and the society sponsors the bibliography as a kind of sister publication to their journal. this means 1) we were almost exclusively grant-funded, and 2) the staff positions at the bibliography go to grad students. there are jobs in bibliography and related information sciences that are not exclusive to academics/grad students, but i can't really tell you anything about them personally; i had this job as a graduate research assistant (ie this was what i did to get my paycheck for two years instead of TAing).
anyway the purpose of a bibliography like this that's affiliated with a journal or subfield is usually to aggregate data on what's published in that journal or subfield. ours was aimed at capturing the whole subfield. so, the bulk of the staff job is to comb through recent academic publications (journal articles & books) and pull anything that's topically relevant. we add the abstract and metadata to the bibliography (meaning basically a searchable database) and then we do subject tagging. this is the most fun part because you have to think about how knowledge is categorised and what's most useful to a user and whatnot.
so like let's say i'm entering an article from the journal of the history of psychiatry. i already pulled the metadata from the online journal listing and put it through zotero, which then talks to the bibliography's back end. i do the authority control (link it with the author's other publications in our bibliography, and with some external identity profile like viaf or orcid). i link it to the journal in our database and make sure it has the right date, page numbers, etc. this article is about philippe pinel, so its main category tag is probably 'psychiatry - 19th century'. then i aim for 5–10 additional subject tags, maybe 'france, metropolitan', 'psychiatric hospitals and institutions', 'therapy and therapeutic methods', 'philosophy of medicine', 'nosology and diagnosis', 'pitié-salpetrière hospice', etc.
once this is all entered, the article is searchable by any of its metadata, by going to the author's profile in our database, or by those subject and category tags. institutions (universities, libraries, hospitals, etc) all have their own authority controls too. you can browse the database by data, by subject tag, by searching keywords, etc; it also has a few visualisation tools that show strongly associated subject tags, histograms of a person's or publisher's history of publication, etc. this all means that things are more easily discoverable than they might be, and once you've found them you can also browse related things easily, or look at some provisional info on the state of publications in the field.
because this bibliography was affiliated with a journal, we also used to publish a yearly print edition with the entries published in the last year (this was satisfying to hold but honestly way less functional than the online database version lol) and we also published a special edition of bibliographic / historiographic essays on pandemics that i worked as managing editor for. idk how common this would be at other kinds of bibliographic job positions; we used the same publisher as the sister journal, so mostly all i had to do was correspond with people and deal with typesetting. anyway once that was published we also added those articles to the bibliography itself too.
anyway super fun job tbh, like a lot of it is data entry but haggling over subject tags was honestly enjoyable if you like that kind of thing. i lost the battle to add "total institutions" as a subject tag but won when i said we needed to revamp our system for entries dealing with weight management; as a result those subject tags are now clearer and more useful, and capture scientific discourses about both 'underweight' and 'overweight'. our best tag imo was "controversies and disputes", which was like a catch-all for any time there was some kind of haterism in the literature. it kind of changed how i view knowledge categorisation (like, the process; philosophy-of) and because we spent so much time reading abstracts to tag them, we would basically have walking encyclopedic knowledge of recent publishing in the field.
some of this functionality can ofc be replicated in library catalogues or google scholar or whatever, but the real value-add is the subject tagging and the relationships between those terms; this is where the bibliography is useful both for finding things and for showing an additional layer of information about the field and publishing in it. lots of academic fields have some equivalent of this, although i will say that our database was generally better (in the sense of more data and useful detail) than others i've used; it was a well-funded project run by a very dedicated prof who's been doing this for over 20 years now, and that continuity and institutional memory is really paying off for it.
but yeah if this is generally something that interests you, like i said, this is really just one specific form of bibliographic work. definitely look into what else is out there (i dunno how much of this would require a degree like an mlis even) and see what you think :)

i made a libertines google calendar...
it's for my own organisational purposes, but i thought i'd share it here in case it's a novelty to anyone else
it's not a gigs calendar, sarah works really hard to maintain the gigs calendar ->here<-
google calendar is kind of shitty at categorising events, which is why i've added manual tags at the end of the names, which you can use the search bar to sort by event type. here's how they're tagged/colour-coded:
#a - (libertines) album #oa - (other related) album #s - (libertines) song/single #os - (other related) song/single #b - birthday #e - event/gig

Okay annoyingly nitpicky question here but can a steal count if the relationship is queerplatonic? like not romantic but committed and intimate in a way a platonic relationship isn't, ie: friends with benefits or something
That's not annoying or nitpicky at all dw! The big reason we chose to specify romantic/sexual (<- so to answer one part of your question, yes friends with benefits absolutely counts!) is to streamline the voting/stealing experience. So you - and fandom writ large - are not looking at two ships in a match up and thinking (to use fandom's multishippingest bracket entrant as an example) "hmm, well I prefer Enjolras with this guy as a friend but romantically I prefer him with Other Guy so idk how to vote". Also bc, yknow, "shipping" originated as a term for romantic relationships and this is a Shipping Showdown. As our FAQ says, "Whenever you see a match up, assume you are being asked which combination of characters you personally would prefer to see depicted in a romantic relationship and/or sucking and fucking."
Now obviously the whole deal with queerplatonic relationships is that they blur the line between the platonic and the romantic/sexual in a way that defies easy categorisation, and so honestly I'm going to say it's largely a matter of your personal discretion whether a work is appropriate as a steal or not. If you're really uncertain, where I personally would draw the line - and suggest you do also - is looking at how you'd tag it on AO3, regardless of the actual medium you're working in. As a general rule, if you'd categorise the work as Gen or use the "Character A & Character B" relationship tag (as opposed to Character A/Character B) it's probably a little too platonic for this specific purpose.
Hope that helps somewhat!

Hi OTNF!! Sometimes I like to read this fandom problem blog that receives submissions from people all over Tumblr, recently this was posted and I wanted to know what you thought of it: The tag types of "Tags update as story is written" or "additional tags to be added" or "Rating may change." Fuck those. I don't care if you add some extra benign tags as the story goes along, and you realise you wanna add more content that's just there, or you realise your fic maybe went a bit harder than you expected. Some stories get their own life. But at the same time, if you knew you'd want to add certain content, or that the rating was gonna go way up from what you tagged in the beginning, why did you not tag it from the start? Especially when the tagged content becomes a big part of the story, or influences the story strongly. And then you find out that the Author already had been planning adding this type of content for a long time, they just FOR SOME STUPID-ASS REASON didn't wanna add the tag until it actually happens. You're supposed to tag so the people can make an informed decision if they wanna commit to your fic, so for the love of the tagging-system, actually TAG ALL YOUR SHIT FROM THE START. Same shit for changing ratings. I hate it when someone plans from the start to make the story explicit, but doesn't change the rating until they've reached the NSFW sections. There's a reason there's a tagging system. So do you just not understand how that works? Or are you just being kind of as ass on purpose? This does not help when avoiding stories with specific content you try to exclude from your results. It's even dumber if the reason is to "avoid spoiling the fic readers", because anyone coming later to the fic is going to be "spoiled" by the tags regardless. And if you know you wanna add porn, or gore, then rate the story appropriately. Rather categorise it too high, than fuck around with people who don't wanna read explicit content. As a writer who uses the Archive, I want to put my 2 cents in. When I'm writing a fic, a long fic for example, I want to tag the stuff that actually DOES appear at that time so that I'm not clogging other tags/people don't think I'm spamming to inflate my readership (And I DEFINITELY do not want something I worked hard on to get reported for spam). I do get the frustration at reading a fic and then something changes like the rating, but as a writer, sometimes things go off script and one thing that's rated T or M might eventually become E just based off the writing juices doing it's thing(tm). To me, the "Additional tags to be added" is kind of like CNTW, it's something the reader has to make a decision if they want to risk getting invested/read that particular fic. It feels very much like a "damned if you do/damned if you don't" situation. What are some of your thoughts on something like this?
--
Writers are always going to vary in their favorite approach, and readers who act like there's one right answer are idiots.
For me personally, even if I'm posting as I write, I do have a solid idea of where the fic is going, and I strongly prefer—both as a reader and writer—to have all of the tags in place at the beginning.
I also don't like over-tagging for warnings and only want to see/use tags for the basic main content of the fic, which does make it easier to know ahead of time than if I tagged every tiny thing.
I think spoilers are a dumb reason not to tag things.
So I agree with the complainer's tastes...
...but at the same time, they're acting like these ought to be rules, and AO3 is designed to accommodate a lot of different people with different styles, so I think their attitude leaves something to be desired.

A bit about how spiders eat their meals.
Soup is back on the menu boys! In fact, it never left the menu. Soup all day, every day. Which is something us autumnal folk and our arachnid friends have in common.
I’ve talked a bit about the chemical makeup of spider silk in another post (which you can find under my ‘spiders (and some other arachnids)’ tag), but for the purpose of this post, I’ll break it down:
Spider silks, scientifically, are categorised as ‘Spidroins’, of which there are many types, making the analysis very complex. There were originally thought to be two types of one MaSp (Major Ampullate Silk Protein - or dragline silk): spidroin-1 and spidroin-2, however with progression in research, there have been revealed to be many more.
Spidroins are part of a large group of proteins called Scleroproteins, of which we have a few, too, including collagen proteins and keratins.
There are seven main kinds of spider silk used to construct webs and snare prey, however in this post I’ll be talking mainly about AcSp2 (Aciniform Spidroin - the spidroin responsible for the webs constructed to wrap prey).
First, the spider wraps their prey in the AcSp2 spidroin (the snare). Then, they begin to digest the prey externally, their digestive fluids reducing both the prey and the AcSp2 web fibres to soup.
For the most part, the exact contents of spider digestive fluid is unknown, however one study of the Uloborus Sp. (Feather legged lace weaver, North America) examined the midgut protein content (I’ll link my sources below).
Proteins found in this spider’s midgut include peptidases (both endo and exopeptidases: cisteine, serine and metallopeptidases.), carbohydrases (alpha-amylase, chitinase and alpha mannosidase) and lipases.
Peptidases are involved in the degradation of proteins. Carbohydrases break down carbohydrates - chitinase is responsible for breaking down chitin (found in the exoskeletons of insects). Lipases break down fats.
Among these digestive enzymes, toxins were also identified: enzymes thought only to be unique to venomous spiders were also found in the guts of non venomous spiders, such as Sphingomyelinase D, suggesting a common origin between digestive enzymes and those found in venoms.
From what I can gather, Sphingomyelinase D (a phospholipase - it hydrolyses phospholipids into fatty acids (liquifies shit)) is responsible for inducing dermal necrosis (which basically kills the skin tissues / causes cell death).
Anyway. Spiders regurgitate this digestive cocktail onto and into their prey in a process known as EOD - extra oral digestion (because it happens outside of the body).
Other enzymes present in spider venoms include hyaluronidases, astacins and serine peptidases.
Hyaluronidases degrade hyaluronic acids (hyaluronic acids are commonly used in skincare and are proven to help wound healing, reduce scarring and aid the skin’s elasticity).
Astacins help with the degradation of polypeptides - so again, they help break down proteins.
And that’s the bite size version of how spooders eat. Enjoy your soup.

ok so I’ve started a degree in library and information science which is fascinating - there’s heaps of thinking about defining and categorising and tagging knowledge/information and what the mandate/purpose/engagement strategies of a library or archive are, how to support users to access the most useful and relevant documents etc but! but!!! none of this is new or challenging thinking for me because I’ve been paying attention to the organisation and polices of ao3 since 2007. how do I bring this up with my very nice lecturers?

I stopped categorising myself as a "Swiftie" or a "fan" when I noticed silence from her on so many important things, she should've spoken on (obviously, her choice; still). i got into her because of a few songs on 1989 (I was in the 7th grade and it was considered really cool at school if we'd listen to English songs. Everybody started with taylor) and then I got back to her when reputation came because she was everywhere - it was quite inevitable and attractive. I stuck through lover because I went through my first heartbreak (I was 15) and most of the songs on it spoke things to me I needed to say to myself. All too well made enough noise I had to check it out. Again not most songs on red, except the mainstream ones. I didn't get into folklore and Evermore right when they were dropped. I stumbled upon "August" while I was in a situationship in 2022 summer and yk i had to just explore. College started I made friends with a girl and she was a hard-core Swiftie. Speak Now, Red, all that stuff. I had to act like I was one as well so that she doesn't make me feel condescending. Now we aren't friends anymore. And I'll agree the Swiftie fandom is kinda delusional and intimidating (saw it first hand). Midnights was okayish for me, but my earlier choices remained the same (folklore, lover). I had proud hopes from TTPD because I'm an english lit major (and a really proud one as all of us should be). I was ready to start fresh and go feral. Haven't been able to wrap it all up - I mean it's like 31 songs on it. I make edits on these songs on my ig to make myself remember which song is which - what lyrics belong to which song and at the end of the day, which song i like - same reason why I post lines from her lyrics here on my tumblr. The purpose of this rant is to know about all the boycott blondie movement that's going on. I'm genuinely curious. I'm using the tag because I want y'all to give your views. I'm also scared of giving her up entirely because I've already detached myself from her personal life and i like her songwriting. I only relate to her art. So do enlighten me.

For the purposes of being able to ask specific Lokis (and his partners) questions or arrange crossover stories, this is my attempt to categorise my many verses. Not everything will be fully properly tagged on the threads themselves as this is an evolving process, bear with me XD It’s... it’s a lot of verses so please feel free to use a search function liberally for particular blog urls if you’re not interested in reading the whole caboodle. Partners may have alternative titles for these threads for their own tracking and of course are the protagonists of their own stories.
V1. Partner: araedi (Thor) Loki: God of Mischief Theme: New Asgard
Details: After surviving the Infinity War, Loki seeks to make amends on Earth by shadowing his brother, the king of New Asgard, as an Avenger in training. Mixed results on how that’s going.

Tag duly noted... :->
That's a Black Sea yataghan all right. I reblogged another post about them back in 2019 which is now gone, but I still have the illustrations saved offline.

And that said, IMO (FWTW) calling this a yataghan is something of a misnomer.
English use of foreign* weapon-words in order to categorise everything neatly means that the original meaning, often just "sword" or "knife" or "axe", has become much more specific.
* Including Gaelic, where - depending on source and opinion - a Claymore (claidheamh-mòr / great sword) is either a two-handed sword with a distinctive sloped crossguard or a one-handed sword with a distinctive basket hilt. There are sound reasons for both choices, mostly to do with the period in which each is being used.
In this instance, a "real yataghan" (English labelling) doesn't have its cutting edge on the outside of the curve, like this:

Instead it has the cutting edge on the inside, like this:

In addition, a "real yataghan" doesn't have a grip which ends in long points, like this:

Instead its grip ends in flared "ears", like this:

The Black Sea yataghan's blade looks like an Ancient Egyptian khopesh...

...and this auction site actually uses the word "kopesh" to describe one.
It also resembles (in various degrees) some North African swords, for instance the Tunisian flyssa...
...and the Ethiopian shotel, although that's another weapon sharpened on the inside not outside of the curve...

...and whether those resemblances are anything other than visual has prompted lively discussion on several sites. My use of "real yataghan" for clarity in this post is almost certainly Very Wrong to some people, while Entirely Appropriate to others.
The "real yataghan" is more like an Ancient Iberian falcata or Ancient Greek kopis. I don't know if "kopis" and "khopesh" are linguistically related, but the Iberian and Greek swords are similar enough that one pic will serve for both.

This next one, incidentally, is another flyssa. It's easy to see how things can get thoroughly confused, and a study of arms-trading around the perimeters of the Ottoman Empire might sort things out.

That forward-curved blade has a couple of descendents besides the "real yataghan", whose blade could vary considerably in width while maintaining its forward curve; compare this first one to the flyssa just above:

The sosun pata (patah / pattah) of India sometimes had a "real yataghan" blade...

...and sometimes didn't.

And then there's the Nepalese kukhri (kukri, khukri etc.) of Gurkha fame.

These can vary in size, usually a broad dual-purpose weapon / work-knife but sometimes a narrow short sword, and the reason why is best answered by "It depends on function, preference and regional style".
I prefer my Really Small one.

There's a very specific sword I'm just obsessed with

9 Steps To Efficiently Test And Tag Office Equipment
In the realm of workplace safety, it is imperative to ensure all office equipment is both functional and safe to use. Hence, a systematic test and tag Devonport to assess the functionality and safety of such equipment is essential.
Often referred to as Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), is a process of checking the safety of portable electrical appliances in an environment such as a workplace, school, or public institution. This involves two parts: testing and tagging.
Testing: This is where the electrical safety of the device is checked. The specifics of the tests performed may vary depending on the type of device, its use, and the local regulations. However, common inspections often include checks for insulation resistance, earth continuity, and a polarity exam. The purpose of these tests is to identify potential electrical faults that could pose a risk of electric shock to users of the device.
Tagging: After the device has been inspected, it is then tagged. This involves attaching a label to the device indicating that it has been checked, the date of testing, who conducted the examination, and when the next exam is due. This provides a clear and visible indication of the device's safety status and ensures regular inspection is carried out.
This process is part of a preventative maintenance program aimed at reducing the risk of electrical shock to users of the equipment. It's often required by health and safety regulations, particularly in workplaces where equipment safety is essential. PAT should be conducted by a trained competent person, often an electrician or a specially trained tester.
Use this guide to conduct testing and tagging seamlessly and help create a safer working environment.
Step 1: Develop an Inventory
The first step involves creating an exhaustive list of all the equipment in your office. This should include everything from computers and printers to desk lamps and electric kettles. Documenting all the items helps you identify what needs to be inspected and allows you to establish an organised system for monitoring the condition of your equipment.
Step 2: Classify Equipment
Once you've inventoried all the equipment, it's time to categorise it based on factors like how often it is used, it's level of safety risk, and the environment in which it's used. Certain equipment like computers might be used daily, while other items like a paper shredder might be used less frequently. Categorising in this manner helps prioritise what equipment needs immediate attention.
Step 3: Establish a Schedule
After classifying your office equipment, create a schedule that dictates when each piece of equipment should be inspected. This might be monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on the equipment's risk level and usage. Stick to this schedule to ensure consistent monitoring.
Step 4: Train Personnel
The individuals tasked with the inspection process should be well-trained in recognising signs of wear and tear and potential electrical hazards. This can be done through comprehensive in-house training or by hiring certified professionals.
Step 5: Conduct Initial Inspections
Now that your team is prepared and a schedule is in place, it's time to begin the first round of inspections. This includes visually examining each piece of equipment for any visible damage, frayed wires, or loose parts that might indicate potential electrical hazards.
Step 6: Perform Advanced Checks
After the initial visual inspection, it's necessary to conduct more comprehensive checks. These may include testing insulation resistance, checking earth continuity, or conducting a polarity exam. It is essential to have a professional with the right skill set to conduct these advanced tests.
Step 7: Document Findings
Proper documentation is key in any safety procedure. Once the inspection is complete, record your findings including any defects found and the steps taken to address them. This is not only important for legal reasons but also helps track the condition of your equipment over time.
Step 8: Label Equipment
Labelling your equipment after inspection helps staff quickly identify whether a piece of equipment has been checked or not. The label should display the date of the last exam and the due date for the next one.
Step 9: Regularly Review and Update Procedures
Finally, continually review and update your procedures based on feedback from the inspection team and changes in safety standards. This step ensures your inspection process remains effective and up-to-date.
This process aims to efficiently inspect and label office equipment, ensuring a safe working environment. Remember, creating a safe workplace is not a one-time task but a continuous commitment to protecting the well-being of everyone involved. By integrating this routine into your company's regular activities, you're taking a proactive stance in preventing electrical hazards and fostering a culture of safety.

My favourite #(s) and their function
As an avid TikTok creator, my favourite hashtags are; the #fy or the #fyp - ‘for you’ and ‘for you page’. These hashtags are not limited to TikTok, you can use the affordance of hashtags on a multitude of social media platforms such as; Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Tumblr.
Example of the hashtags’ in action: Available at:
As you can see, from the link to the video above. The user has included the hashtags; ‘fy’ and ‘fyp’ to increase their views and in turn the amount of likes the video receives. This is a commonly used tactic, and is usually the most successful - as we can see from this video, the creator’s post received, 12.4 million views and 2.5 million likes.
What is a hashtag?
I reviewed a book called Searchable Talk: Hashtags and Social Media Metadiscourse (Zappavigna, M.., 2018) which explores hashtags and sociable tagging as a form of searchable talk.
What does this mean exactly?
The hashtags are a form of user-generated metadata, and they have recently been seen to be enacting social relations. Essentially, the hashtag has upgraded from a means to organise information, to a way in which we can build online and social relationships.
“Having extended it’s semiotic reach of an information-organising tool to a social resource for building relationships and communities through the practice of social tagging” (Zappavigna, 2015)

Available at:
Zappavigna, M. (2018) Searchable talk : hashtags and social media metadiscourse. London ;: Bloomsbury Academic, an imprint of Bloomsbury Plc. Available at: https://doi.org/10.5040/9781474292337.
How do we utilise the Hashtag and it’s function of social tagging?
Every hashtag, essentially has the same function. However, there are so many of them nowadays, since social media has become one of the most used tools of communication.
The hashtag is used to describe or relate to something in a video or photograph. For example Available at:
What was the purpose of utilising this affordance?
With context to the video above - It’s a categorising technique. If someone were to type in Waitrose’ or ‘Surreyhousehusband’ into the search bar, This users video would come up.
Meaning more interaction with the creator’s posts and profile = THE MAIN GOAL of; any content creator, on any social media platform. Since, the more interaction and attention your content and profile receives. the more opportunities you can be granted.
For example:
Paid collaborations Sponsorship offers and deals with certain brands and companies - relating to your content of course.
Function of the Hashtags fy/fyp
It’s a soft power - and has the ability to shape the preferences of others, by directing you to pages or users who use similar, or the same hashtag. The hashtag has been around for years, but has evolved.
In an article: “Hashtags work everywhere”: The pragmatic functions of spoken hashtags (Scott, 2015). Scott reviews data gathered by Zappavigna, focusing on the linguistic, pragmatic and categorising/search functionalities of the hashtag.
“Hashtags were initially designed to function as metadata tags to facilitate content categorisation and retrieval” (Zappavigna, 2015)
Available at:
Scott, K. (2018) ‘“Hashtags work everywhere”: The pragmatic functions of spoken hashtags’, Discourse, context & media, 22, pp. 57–64. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dcm.2017.07.002.
But they can now be used to drive event focused discourse and clearly outline contextual assumptions.

I think saying "to the average [Internet user] tropes is tropes" is presuming a greater level of agreement about what tropes mean than is actually present. People debate each others' systems of categorising tropes all the time. The AO3 community thinks the fanfiction.net community is doing it wrong, the fanfiction.net community thinks the AO3 community is doing it wrong, and both of them think TV Tropes is doing it wrong.
The crux is that this isn't just quibbling over the definitions of individual words: these disagreements are foundational. AO3 and TV Tropes are never going to see eye to eye not because one of them is "right" and the other is "wrong", but because the purpose of AO3's system of categorising tropes is not the same as the purpose of TV Tropes' system of categorising tropes. They're describing different things.
Now, do some folks who object to promoting general fiction using AO3 tags do so because they're a bunch of snobs whose reasoning isn't any deeper than Fanfic Bad? No doubt. That they're objecting for a stupid reason doesn't mean the opposite of their position is automatically true; it can still be the wrong tool for the job for a different reason.
Look, I agree that trying to sell folks on original fiction by citing fanfic tropes is asinine, but at least "oh, it's got enemies to lovers!" tells you something substantive about the plot and characters. I once had somebody try to convince me to read a work of original fiction by telling me that it has a romance with a height gap.
