I haven't posted here because we got super busy and then we bought a car and I had instant regret and I haven't known how it was going to work out so I just haven't posted.
We've wanted to replace my Civic for a long time. And finally we did. With a 2020 volvo v60. I love volvos. I had a 2000 v40 that I ADORED and named PeeWee. My parents have had volvos for ages. I just feel a sense of brand loyalty to them.
But this car took premium fuel. It's AWD so if I had to replace one tire it would have to be all four. And our tiny townhouse has a tiny garage and I literally cried trying to park this v60 in it. It was beeping like mad and just barely fits. And the fuel efficiency is so much lower than my civic that I was just... I felt some regret.
Since it's carmax, there's a 30 day return window, which is great. But the civic is sold - so it's like, okay, we can return this volvo, but then what do we get? We tried a handful of things, and I am change-resistant and was like "this handles differently than my civic and it's weird to me" about EVERYTHING. It wasn't a super fun process.
In the end, we settled on a 2021 mazda3 hatchback. We drove a 2019 (same car as the 2021) and carmax is shipping the 2021 to us from Maryland. Hopefully it gets here by this weekend and we can return the volvo and by the mazda and be done with everything.
To be honest, I didn't LOVE the mazda either, but Ken likes it, and it's our first big joint purchase, and I know a lot of my resistance is just that it feels different than my civic, and I'll get used to how it feels after a couple weeks. The hatch makes it easier to get a bike inside than my civic with its trunk. That was a key motivator to get rid of the civic - every time I went biking I started the ride in a terrible mood because of what a nightmare it is to get a bike in and out of there.
So anyway, I'm a bit embarrassed that we bought a car and I changed my mind, and I'm annoyed that we could drive so many cars and I didn't feel like any of them was "the one," and I'm super annoyed that our garage is so small that it dramatically cuts our options down. But I'm trying to be less pissy and more accepting and to look on the bright side: in just a few days we'll be done with the car buying process, at least for a few years until Ken is ready to part with his truck.

Uh .... gas tank spiders??? What??
Anon I am SO glad you asked
So, first off, I was wrong, it wasn’t Mazda3s, it was Mazda6s. Similar sedan, though, so like. Details.
ANYWAY, in 2011, Mazda issued a recall to a bunch of 2009-2010 model years because yellow sac spiders were building nests in the cars’ fuel lines. Those spiders love hydrocarbons, and the fuel vapor pressure in the fuel lines was enough to draw them in, but not enough to kill them, so they’d build their nests in there and cause all sorts of problems, including yknow, fire risk because it’s in the FUEL LINES.
AND THEN. Three years later. 2014. Mazda has to issue A SECOND RECALL for the SAME REASON for 2010-2013 model years. From The Verge (before the 2013 model year was added to the recall):
[image ID: a screenshot of a news article that reads “The recall announced this week affects 42,000 Mazda 6s in the US, model years 2010 to 2012. Hopefully this will solve the problem once and for all, but it seems Mazda's spider issues may go all the way to the top. When asked why Mazda's struggled so much with the spiders, a representative told The New York Times, "Don’t ask me, I’m terrified of the damn things."” End ID]
And from Slate:
[image ID: a screenshot of a news article that reads “The elephant-like question in the Mazda showroom is: what’s so appealing to the spiders about a Mazda? The answer: no clue. Here’s Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes after the 2011 recall speaking to CNN.
“It’s unclear why this particular spider – the yellow sac spider – seems to prefer the model year 2009 and 2010 Mazda6, company spokesman Jeremy Barnes said. All modern cars have the same type of equipment. ‘Maybe they just like cars that go ‘Zoom-Zoom’,’ he said. ‘We honestly don’t know.’”” End ID]
Ultimately I guess it boiled down to the fact that the way Mazda had their gas tanks configured was really unique and weird and these spiders were just huge fans. So yeah. Gas tank spiders.

Before diving into the used car market, consider your needs and preferences. Here are some key questions to ask yourself:

Features: Identify essential features like sunroof, heated seats, or a specific infotainment system.
Budget: Determine a realistic budget that considers the car's purchase price, potential repairs, and ongoing maintenance.
Mileage: Generally, lower mileage indicates less wear and tear, but it might also translate to a higher price.
Tips for Buying a Used Mazda
Once you've narrowed down your Mazda Christchurch used cars options, here are some crucial steps for a smooth used car buying experience:
Research: Utilise resources like Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds to understand the fair market value of your chosen Mazda model with specific features and mileage.
Get a Vehicle History Report: Invest in a vehicle history report to uncover previous accidents, ownership changes, and major repairs.
Test Drive: Don't skip the test drive! Pay attention to engine performance, handling characteristics, and overall condition of the car.
Inspection: Get the car inspected by a trusted mechanic before finalising the purchase. This can identify any potential issues and give you bargaining leverage.
Consider Certified Pre-Owned (CPO): CPO Mazda vehicles undergo a rigorous inspection and often come with extended warranties, offering peace of mind.
Benefits of Buying from a Mazda Dealership
While private sellers exist, consider the advantages of purchasing a used Mazda from a Mazda dealership:
Wider Selection: Dealerships often have a broader inventory of used Mazda, allowing you to compare different models and trims.
Financing Options: Dealerships can offer various financing options to fit your budget.
Warranty Options: Many dealerships provide extended warranties on used cars, providing additional protection.

Bad Design, and the end of the car battery saga
So, apparently the issue with my car was technically my fault. I stalled the car for 30 minutes to keep the bluetooth and such on while I waited for KFC to open. Because it was a stall rather than being set properly to accessory, this caused the car battery to drain in about 30 minutes.
I called this bad design due to the way the ignition works in the modern Mazda3s; there's no way to kill the engine without killing the radio or whatever other accessories I'm using if I've been driving. Well, in a manual at least; there is in automatic, but I like manuals. To go to accessory in my car, I need to turn the care off fully, then put it back on to the accessory mode.
I appreciate the ease of push button start, but if you can't put it back to accessory after driving, that's not a feature, it's a detriment. I don't care if it's a timed thing after stalling, or if there's a separate button, or something else, but it's bad design, and it's fucking stupid.
Anyway, Mazda want me to take it back to them again next week for them to confirm everything is good, but we think we've worked out the cause, so it's more to cover their bases and make sure it's all as reasonably covered as it can be, so this should be the end of the story if we're right. And if we're wrong, everything in the second and third paragraphs still stand true.
#[ooc]#[It bugs me so much because I actually love my car#but I'm trained in design and seeing something done in such a stupid and short sighted way physically hurts me#I'd rather have a physical key that I can partially turn back#or a 3 position switch#anything but a binary button that you have to fully turn off to go from engine running back to accessory]

Being popular doesn’t mean it’s good, or does it? Mazda 3 (2014-2019) - ... This Used Car Review on Mazda3 via ReDriven YouTube is very helpful. I also enjoy the thorough ways that the YouTube author takes the viewer inside various parts of the Mazda 3 and features a mechanic. I am lucky to have had a Mazda 3 before during part of 2007 and part of 2008 which i had good experiences with especially the gas mileage. I already have an idea in mind of a secret timeline I would like to purchase a mazda3 again and this review gives enhanced details on what to keep in mind.

Reasons To Buy A Used Mazda3 Sedan
In recent years, Mazda went from being an import also-ran to a true contender. Building on the success of the 323 and the 626, they’ve produced great cars that merit serious interest.
Here are a number of reasons to consider a used Mazda3!
Long-Term Reliability
A reliable passenger car used to be hard to find outside of the Honda and Toyota folds. The Mazda3 is a viable alternative to those mainstays based on reviews from consumers and critics. In fact, the Mazda3 sedan for sale is consistently named one of the most reliable sedans on the market by many online review aggregators.
Advanced On-Board Electronics
The 2016 Mazda3 is packed with tons of high-tech features like keyless ignition, Bluetooth connectivity, and the latest Bose speakers. It also features the polished Mazda Connect multimedia system, which boasts a 7-inch touchscreen on the dash. It can control a slew of entertainment functions and display high-definition 3D maps for navigation.
Relative Ease of Repair
Like most Japanese sedans, the Mazda3 is an easy vehicle to work on when an equipment malfunction eventually occurs. Whether you like to do automotive repairs yourself or outsource them to mechanics, the Mazda3’s sensible layout saves time and money. Furthermore, OEM Mazda parts are built to last and deliver excellent ROI.
Low Long-Term Ownership Costs
Over the course of a decade, a Mazda3 will cost far less to own and operate than most competing sedans. Due to its safety record, a Mazda3 will be cheaper to insure. Furthermore, buyers will save hundreds of dollars in fuel thanks to the outstanding gas mileage that every Mazda3 can achieve.
Superior Safety Features
Besides being built to stand up to common collisions, the 2016 Mazda3 comes with a bevy of safety features that prevent accidents. For instance, the included Smart City Brake Support helps drivers to avoid fender-benders in heavy traffic. There’s also Radar Cruise Control, a standard backup camera, and adaptive headlights.
A Fun Driving Experience
Unlike most entry-level sedans, the Mazda3 places an emphasis on driving performance as well as reliability. The Mazda3’s taut suspension, top-notch brakes, and standard 6-speed manual transmission deliver an exhilarating experience.
Above-Average Fuel Economy
SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is a blanket term for Mazda’s innovative new-generation technologies developed under the company’s long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom. The name SKYACTIV reflects Mazda’s aim to provide high levels of driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance in its vehicles.
Configuration Flexibility
Nowadays, it’s hard to find a popular sedan line that also features an alternative body type such as a hatchback. The Mazda3 puts the customer in control when it comes to configuring options by offering a variety of trim levels. It also gives buyers a choice between a superb 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
Sexy Styling That Stands Out
Nowadays, nearly every vehicle with four doors looks fairly similar. The Mazda3 is one of the few affordable cars out there that boasts a distinctive profile that’s both aesthetically pleasing and easily recognizable at a glance. Additions like a rear spoiler and 18-inch wheels further set a Mazda3 apart from the crowd.
