Here im going to write a take that im not sure if somebody will read this about my project

as yall can see, The Hundred Line; Last Defense Academy: Half Frutiger Times is a fan project of mine that is under construction and its aesthetic is mixed with Frutiger Aero, Y2k, a little Dreamcore and a bit of Silicon Dreams.

The project follows the story of a boy named Banri Fukushima that dreams to be a famous basketball player, and all his family and known beings, especially Choji(his childhood friend and best bro) supports him. But one day, while practising for a game, he get hit by a basket ball in the side part of his cheek and he faints. 2 hours later, an apocalypse of killer machines, called Water Dryads, attack the city he lives in and when he wakes up, he witnesses the destruction of his city, home and all the places he knows.

While escaping from the monsters, a mysterious floating golden fish, that calls koinself(themselves) Kingyo, appears infront of him offering to take refuge(or refugee? idk) on a max-shielded academy and he accepts it. So both of them magically teleports there, but Banri realizes that his school became the only refugee for some students, and when he enters to the place, 39 students from every classroom, plus 3 other mysterious fishes and a mammal, receives him(they were basically kiddos of his school, except the pets because none of them was here before)

After the students received the boy, a male voice with a metallic tone, announces the kids that they need to get ready they are going to fight against those machines for half year(which means that the event finishes a Dec 31)

... After Day 1 finished, 10 students from the outside enrolls to the academy to fight with their new mates, but they realize that they are not going to fight with them because the teams of 10 are divided per classrooms, so they are in the special sector

Kingyo (koi/koin): The first high-class commander, has the figure of a golden fish and koi is the one who helped Banri to escape from the apocalypse. Koi might be strict, but koi can proove that koi is such a cool commander to his class.

Shippipi (xe/xim): The second high-class commander and has the figure of a ballon fish. Shippipi is such a humble and nice commander, but when xe gets angry or anxious, xe inflates ximself and bounce around the room

Karusei (dur/dune): The third high-class commander and has the figure of a moorish idol. Karusei is a serious and cold teacher, but when dur doesn't know what to tell to dude students, dur tells dude silly stories about how dur played with fire underwater, fed dude fishes, even how dur got dude scar in dude eyes!

Nabiki (she/her): The fourth high-class commander and has the figure of a jellyfish. Nabiki is the only female teacher on the school and she doesn't feel alright about it. When someone mentions about sweet oil, she will magically appear and shake aggresively once you mention about.

Valdo (he/him): Also known by his long name Pedrosvaldo, is the fifth and last high-class commander and has the figure of a seal. Despite he is a mammal, Valdo would never eat his fish mates because he has a big respect to them. Being a teacher, Valdo hates educating his foreign students, except Kamran, Kholoud and Dmitriy cause he believes that these kids have something special inside them.

Nabiki and Valdo are the only commanders that are real animals inside the academy, the others are actually robots

The reason I named Motohiko like that is because the word "Moto" means bike in my language, spanish, which means that he is a biker like Takemaru lol

The uniform color has different aspects depending of the class, white for class 1, blue for class 2, green for class 3, red or yellow for class 4(depending the gender) and for class 5 is variated depending of the country

Warriors of the Salacian Rebellion

In late 2010 a large army from deep beneath the sea, coming from the underwater World of Salacia, came up to invade Dryland in rebellion against the Drylanders and their treatment of Salacia. Despite their defeat at the hands of Parker Zhou (Zhuge Liang), their warrior spirits persisted much to the awe of many.

In the years before the rebellion, many kings from previously participated in the five Battles of Kawanakajima against the Takeda Clan. A few years after, the Salacians began another rebellion that ultimately failed, then in the ensuing years, the Salacians decided to protect their world (or invade Dryland) as Kamen Riders.

This is a record of those who fought valiantly in the Salacian Rebellion of 2010. Not everyone could be recorded for various reasons, such as their absence at the time or the amount of warrior names that could be assigned to them, but they would eventually be recognised in the years to come.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Both characters have a tragic backstory when they entire family was killed, and both grew up becoming stronger to avenge them. What I like about such anime is that it’s admirable to see a character who went through pain and suffering but  emerging stronger as he or she discovers their true self while learning to overcome present challenges with the baggage of the past which is not easy.

I read the book ‘Legends of the Samurai’ and realized that quite a number of historical figures such as Uesugi Kenshin (Nagao Kagetora) had a tough childhood before he became known as the fearless Tiger of Echigo in his adulthood, able to defend his homeland and defeat stronger warlords like Takeda Shingen and Oda Nobunaga.  

When Kenshin was a child, his father went into battle but only to be betrayed and ambushed. With the army in disarray, Kenshin’s eldest brother took control and during the power struggle, Kenshin’s elder brother was killed and Kenshin became the next target as his eldest brother sees him as the next threat to his succession. As a result, he was hidden in Rinsen-ji temple where he spent his childhood years alone without a family, studying Buddhism and martial arts. 

Several years later, Kenshin reunites with his father’s old friend, Usami Sadamitsu, along with a few other loyal supporters of his late father. The reason they suddenly decided to find Kenshin after all these years is because his eldest brother, Harukage, had become a warlord, tearing the province apart. At first, Kenshin was reluctant to fight his own brother, even though his brother tried to kill him as a child and is believed to have killed his elder brother. 

Realizing that he has to take control of the province before it was destroyed by his brother, Kenshin finally agreed to wage war and succeeded in wresting control from Harukage and eventually became the head of the family clan of Nagao Clan, a retainer to the Uesugi Clan at the mere age of 19 years old.

Later, Kenshin provided a refuge to a lord, Uesugi Norimasa (Uesugi Clan), who fled from the expanding Hojo Clan. Kenshin later became his heir and changed the name from Nagao Kagetora to Uesugi Kenshin becoming the Lord of Echigo. Then two more lords requested help from Kenshin to defend their homelands from the expanding Takeda Clan. Realizing that Echigo might be the next target, Kenshin agreed to fight the war on two fronts, against Hojo and Takeda.

They underestimate Kenshin due to his young age and inexperience as a Lord but soon learn he is not someone to be trifle with. Even though he had no experience waging war outside of his province, he had proven capable in defending on his own turfs. Unlike most of the lords at the time, Kenshin had no interest in expanding his territory or becoming a Shogun like the ambitious Oda.

This is why Uesugi Kenshin remains my favorite Samurai of all. Because in an age where Samurai are ambitious for lands and titles, often times, letting power get into their heads and stepping over honor for greed, Uesugi Kenshin is one of those rare Samurai who remembered his place and why he became a Samurai. Perhaps because his hardships and his time with the monks during his childhood years shaped him into a better man than the others.

I recommend the film Heaven and Earth which is about Uesugi Kenshin. The actor’s portrayal of the character is excellent that I cannot see anyone else acting the role as the character is just as what I imagined him to be when I read about him.

I thought Kageie was ancient, but no. Two of his compatriots are older.

Kageie: Born 1513

The only “young” one is Kagemochi. Birthday unknown, but he lived to 1604 so he can’t be that old unless he’s like... 90 when he died. 

To compare, Shingen is born in 1521, Kenshin in 1530, Nobu in 1534 :’D 

Usami Sadamitsu is even older than Motonari, who is already the oldest grandpa among the big lords SDKHJFH :’D

Also on the subject of unexpectedly old grandpas... Ujiyasu was born in 1515. I thought he was born in like the 1520s like Shingen for some reason. Damn Samurai Warriors for skewing my perspective.

Well this dropped, too, after like... a year? or more? after volume 4. Better later than never.

My knee-jerk reaction to this volume: there’d better be at least some mutual Shingen/Kenshin thing in here in the future! /disgruntled shipper

Also, I’m enjoying this manga but I’m still a bit unsure as to whether Higashimura Akiko is really suited to this kind of historical drama. The story is fine, but somehow the art is... a bit clumsy? Very much unlike her works with modern settings. The splash pages/etc. look mostly fine but otherwise the proportions are often rather off, and the poses a bit stilted, with the art seemingly concentrating on the (very expressive!) faces, leaving the bodies as kind of an afterthought.

The language is also uneven, with some characters speaking in jidaigeki style, some modern style, and the former often slip into modern colloquial speech in comedic scenes. (Much like in crappy TV dramas *cough*) I mean, I’m not a stickler for jidaigeki speech in historical stuff but if you start out using that then just... keep using that and figure out how to do comedy using jidaigeki speech. Don’t just have a character say stuff like “～かもしれぬではないか” and “つーかこいつ誰” in the same damn breath. Oh well.

Anyway, the story picks up from last time, when, while traveling “disguised” as a woman, Kagetora later known as Kenshin, met Harunobu later known as Shingen, who immediately took a liking to her, flirted with her and tried to kiss her. While naked in a bath. As you do.

Life goes on as usual, stuff happens, the manga heaps praise on Kenshin and being all “but srsly would a man have been able to do all this awesome stuff” (to which my answer is “....yeah? being good at governing is not gender-dependent?”) but apparently Shingen did manage to get under Kenshin’s skin because she just can’t get him out of her mind. Sea? “He told me he’s never seen the sea, we can’t let someone like him take over!” “He also told me my eyes are indigo colored like the northern sea, IS THAT TRUE” etc. She then concludes that “fuck no, what do you even know about our sea you mountain hick! And you try to seduce me? Ridiculous!”

To complicate matters, Kenshin privately admits to Shuuken that this incident made her afraid of men. So she decides that in order to get over this and level up as a daimyou she needs to lose her virginity (in a funny reversal of the “virgin dudes are not immune to the charms of women” idea). She orders Shuuken to have sex with her, and they do, and I’m like UGH NO, WHY ISN’T IT SHINGEN?! WHY DO YOU OBVIOUSLY SHIP THESE TWO INSTEAD OF MY OTP, MANGAKA.

(Also, Shuuken is not supposed to have sex with women but Kenshin is “kind of like a man” so technically he’s not breaking his vows. ...Right. But of course when the actual night rolls around he’s very keen on reminding Kenshin that she is a woman.)

Anyway, the sex is had and Kenshin is now not afraid of men. Yay. Time for a two-year timeskip.

Tora/Kenshin is now 22. Harunobu/Shingen 31. Things seem to be going well for Kenshin, except one day Usami Sadamitsu drops in and after observing her for a while brazenly tells her that she’s not only underestimating Shingen, she’s also overestimating herself. Shingen is the Tiger of Kai; Kenshin is just a kitty cat. Kenshin takes the well-intended criticism in stride and orders Sadamitsu to help her become a tiger herself.

In the meantme Shingen gets a bit of a backstory. He used to be a very smart but standoffish child who was suffering from an overly strict father who preferreds his younger brother. He cried every day, and no-one had seen him smile. Then we see him smile anyway, and it’s cute.

Then and now.

We also learn that although he’s ruthless in battle and politics, he’s kind and compassionate with the people he likes. Still, he’s a threat and Sadamitsu reminds Kenshin that she should be very careful, otherwise she might just end up as his concubine. Kenshin is like “well then, if I win I can make him my concubine.” Ha!

Meanwhile in Owari... some 16-year-old good-for-nothing named Nobunaga is being a dick at his father’s funeral. Will this guy ever amount to anything at all? :D

Trying to unravel the “real history” account of Kenshin’s route

I emphasize “try”, because all of this is just propositions of possibilities. I have no affiliation with Voltage, and I have no knowing of their creative processes.

So I understand why Voltage might not have wanted to use the Battle of Tedorigawa plot for the climax of Kenshin’s route, because it might be irritating to some fans for Nobunaga to poke his head into the plot again (in Japan, Kenshin’s route was released after Shingen’s). Kenshin's main battles in his lifetime were indeed with Takeda and Hojo, so choosing to introduce Hojo Ujitsuna as the enemy makes sense.

Now about the problem of the “mystery lady”, which is a major part of the plot as well. She seems to be more or less based on the situation with Ise-hime, who was said to be the only woman Kenshin ever loved. She had even appeared in the old incarnation of this app, Sakura Amidst Chaos, so it makes sense to bring her back (kind of).

At first, I’d wondered if Voltage was using some other conflict from a previous generation, because I didn’t understand why they chose do drop Ujitsuna on us instead of Ujiyasu. The Hojo lord that Kenshin was constantly fighting with was Ujiyasu. Also, in one of the past Nobunaga’s story events, they told us that HOJO UJIYASU HAS JUST DIED.

But no, it turns out Voltage was just changing around the names. Even though the lord is named as Ujitsuna, he’s playing the role of Ujiyasu in opposing the Uesugi clan. Why feel the need to replace sons with their fathers? I don’t know. 

So back to Ise-hime. Apparently she was kind of pseudo-legendary, and her existence is somewhat debatable, so that’s why it’s fair game to change around her identity. According t the stories, she was the daughter of the lord of Hirai Castle, who defected from Hojo to join the Uesugi. Her family was taken in as hostages by Kenshin, and Kenshin then wanted to marry her. Kageie objected to the marriage, and Ise-hime later went away to a temple where she eventually died.

By the way, “Amakasu Kagetsugu sister” has become a “frequently searched keyword” in Google. Apparently this story is unfamiliar and/or confusing enough to the general public in Japan as well. 

Speaking of Kagetsugu, now. Just like Ujitsuna, he seems to be a stand-in for someone else. The “four kings” of Uesugi are Naoe Kagetsuna, Usami Sadamitsu, Kakizaki Kageie, and Amakasu Kagemochi. Naoe Kagetsuna is Kanetsugu’s adopted father. It’s understandable to replace him with Kanetsugu, who is more famous.

*) Fun fact, Naoe Kagetsuna’s name 景綱 is written the same as Kojuro’s Kagetsuna

However, it’s hard to tell why was Kagemochi switched out with Kagetsugu. They’re somewhat distantly related, and Kagetsugu is not any more famous than Kagemochi. The only connection between them is that they’re both listed among the “Uesugi’s 17 generals”.

Lastly, the reason why they chose Kagetsugu to be the vengeful character might have been inspired by the violent Amakasu Incident. Lieutenant Amakasu Masahiko, who was one of the perpetrators in the incident, was descended from Kagemochi.

Solmare just released a teaser for their new otome port. 

In the teaser posts, they say the title is  “-S○○○○○u Darling-”, so I’m assuming the title is gonna be Sengoku Darling. This is actually the second/sequel/prequel/spinoff game, featuring Kenshin and Shingen and their retainers etc.

(That blondie look on Kenshin sure is popular)

Not sure what if they ever gonna port the first game, featuring Nobubu and Masa and Mitsunbun and Akechi (it’s that one where Nobubu looks like Tenka/SLBP!Shingen). I don’t know if Solmare just doesn’t like Nobu or if it’s just because the first game is less popular in Japan. 

The original game, “Iza, Shutsujin! Koi Ikusa”, has been around for a while. So they’re prettying it up with animations, I guess.

I think the original Japanese is available as a singular game for iOS here, but for PSP it’s been split into two, “Kai Story” and “Echigo Story”
