White-tailed Hillstar is a distinctive, large hummingbird of the northern Andes. It is not closely related to the other hillstars (Oreotrochilus), and also differs in habitat preferences: species of Oreotrochilus occupy puna and paramo grasslands, above tree line, whereas White-tailed Hillstar occurs in humid forest on the lower slopes of the Andes. Both sexes are green overall, with a blue throat and breast and extensive white in the rectices. The nominate subspecies, of the Pacific slope, has a orange stripe extended back from the base of the bill; this stripe is lacking in the subspecies of the east slope of the Andes, leucura, which also has more white in the tail. These two distinctive, and geographically isolated, taxa are recognized as separate species by some authorities ("Rufous-gaped Hillstar" and "White-tailed Hillstar" sensu stricto, respectively).
