Re: the hitler thing Look into the history of the pledge of alliegance (which starts, btw, in like the 20s) and look at the associations between the guys who invented and marketed it & the folks who eventually became the silver shirts & american nazi party. The pledge feels hitlery because it was designed to, because the people who invented it thought that nazis had a lot of good ideas that should be adopted in the US. If you've got kids, let them know that the pledge of allegiance isn't mandatory, & that you'd prefer that they didn't do it. Tell them why, too. Blind nationalism is insidious and justifies all sorts of horrible behavior. A healthy nation is one that needs to provide for its citizens because they can & will emigrate if it doesn't, & nationalism is a way to create brand loyalty so that actual quality governance is less necessary.

American media goes to great lengths to justify the idea that sexual relationships work on entirely different rules from other kinds of relationships. Like: suggesting that the pool of possible friends and the pool of possible lovers are disjoint sets ("men and women can't be friends"), claiming that the set of attributes that make for a good friend disqualify one from a sexual relationship and vice versa... I'm starting to think that maybe hollywood is full of assholes who can't make friends & are trying to spin their inability to form real connections as a mark of sexual prowess.

there’s also this thing where American comedy movies have to feature a stoned slacker who is somehow sexually irresistible despite not even being a pleasant person to spend time with; I’m not sure if this is some kind of attempt to flatter the audience or just the particular kink of some movie producers but either way it’s incredibly cringey every time.
