Inequality + Slums in Velaris
kinda 👀 at the people who think slums and designated Poor™️ areas are supposed to be normal, especially in acotar w Velaris. They *shouldn't* to be normal especially for VeLAriS
The UN Definition of a slum:
.... individuals living under the same roof lacking one or more of the following conditions: access to improved water, access to improved sanitation, sufficient living area, housing durability, and security of tenure
Slums form and grow in different parts of the world for many different reasons. Causes include rapid rural-to-urban migration, economic stagnation and depression, high unemployment, poverty, informal economy, forced or manipulated ghettoization, poor planning, politics, natural disasters, and social conflicts.
Rural–urban migration
Many people move to urban areas primarily because cities promise more jobs, better schools for poor's children, and diverse income opportunities than subsistence farming in rural areas.
this doesn't really apply to Velaris as it is a closed in separated city from the rest of the night court
Urbanization
Some scholars suggest that urbanization creates slums because local governments are unable to manage urbanization, and migrant workers without an affordable place to live in, dwell in slums.
Rapid urbanization drives economic growth and causes people to seek working and investment opportunities in urban areas.
However, as evidenced by poor urban infrastructure and insufficient housing, the local governments sometimes are unable to manage this transition. This incapacity can be attributed to insufficient funds and inexperience to handle and organize problems brought by migration and urbanization.
again, I don't see thus happening due to it being a private and secluded city unless they're taking in a rapid amount of SA survivors- the only outsiders brought into the city
Poor house planning
Insufficient financial resources and lack of coordination in government bureaucracy are two main causes of poor house planning.
This would mean that Rhysand is not paying attention to evenly distributed wealth or mindful government oversight in poor house planning. If there are low income folks, adequate housing is not being provided
Colonialism and segregation
Some of the slums in today's world are a product of urbanization brought by colonialism. For instance, the Europeans arrived in Kenya in the nineteenth century and created urban centers such as Nairobi mainly to serve their financial interests. They regarded the Africans as temporary migrants and needed them only for supply of labour.
The housing policy aiming to accommodate these workers was not well enforced and the government built settlements in the form of single-occupancy bedspaces. Due to the cost of time and money in their movement back and forth between rural and urban areas, their families gradually migrated to the urban centre. As they could not afford to buy houses, slums were thus formed.
I wouldn't say this qualified for Velaris, internally, but as for the Nightcourt as a whole, the separation of the CoN and Illyria from the golden city that is Velaris is very telling
The citizens of the CoN aren't allowed to leave the city and as we have seen from Rhysand, they will have businesses turn CoN citizens away in Velaris
Illyria is full of war torn camps where inequality thrives and there is not adequate housing or supplies, as we see when Cassian said he fought other children for supplies. We also see it when Cassian brings blankets for the Illyrians
Poor infrastructure, social exclusion and economic stagnation
Social exclusion and poor infrastructure forces the poor to adapt to conditions beyond his or her control. Poor families that cannot afford transportation, or those who simply lack any form of affordable public transportation, generally end up in squat settlements within walking distance or close enough to the place of their formal or informal employment.
This overall I feel best exemplifies Velaris. As far as we're made aware there aren't vehicles in Velaris and we don't make notice of any other forms of transportation besides winnowing. The closest we get is flying and we've only seen Cassian, Azriel, Rhysand and Feyre. With Winnowing, it's only Mor and Rhysand and Feyre.
Winnowing is not a common practice ability that all faeries have. There does seem to be a suggestion that there are people who can Winnow, though this is based on Rhysand telling Feyre about his dad being unable to Winnow into the HoW
This leaves many people being unable to have any form of transportation outside of walking.
Informal economy
Many slums grow because of growing informal economy which creates demand for workers. Informal economy is that part of an economy that is neither registered as a business nor licensed, one that does not pay taxes and is not monitored by local, state, or federal government.
There are very few businesses we see in Velaris. We see Rita's, the dive bar and some art studios. There isn't enough shown about legitimate businesses to really show much about an informal economy
Poverty
Urban poverty encourages the formation and demand for slums. With rapid shift from rural to urban life, poverty migrates to urban areas. The urban poor arrives with hope, and very little of anything else. They typically have no access to shelter, basic urban services and social amenities. Slums are often the only option for the urban poor.
Poverty has been witnessed with especially the Illyrians. But within Velaris, it stands to reason that the "grimy part of the city" where Nesta lives, and the bar she frequents, does not have the adequate infrastructure in place for proper wages- which would be Rhysands responsibility to make sure a minimums wage where people could thrive would exist
tldr: Velaris has slums and it's through Rhys' shitty job as a high lord by not creating adequate social systems or infrastructure where poor folks can live without being designated to the "grimy parts of the city"

Tumblr media
So here we go
The Crown Heir oversaw a major program of urban development and beautification that transformed the city from one of simple materials to one of grand marble. This transformation involved a number of ambitious public works projects that aimed to create a more grand and majestic Welkesh.
It had become a pet project of pure egotistical drive.
One of the first major projects undertaken by the Crown Heir was the rebuilding of the city's main sewer system. This project helped to improve sanitation in the city and reduce the spread of disease that has spread since the V'era started attacking Nareth years ago.
Another key project was the construction of a new civic center, or public square, that would serve as the centerpiece of the city. The Welkeshian Grand Plaza was built to rival the existing marketplace in Argent, and included new monuments, museums, and public spaces. The centerpiece of the new plaza was a massive statue dedicated to the Crown Heir's mother, Queen Adelina.
In addition to these projects, the Crown Heir also commissioned a number of new public buildings and monuments, many of which were constructed out of marble. The Great Hall of Uriel, the Tower of the Remiel, and the Welkesh Memorial were just a few of the new structures that were built during this impressive series of public works.
To finance these projects, the Crown Heir levied new taxes and used their own personal wealth to fund the construction. They also encouraged wealthy patrons to donate money to the city's beautification efforts, often in exchange for recognition and prestige. (Some whisper of threats, but this is just drivel from the furries)
Overall, the Crown Heir's urban development program helped to create a more magnificent and impressive Welkesh, one that was then known for its grandeur and beauty. Their use of marble in particular was a key element of this transformation, as the white stone was associated with wealth, power, and imperial grandeur.

SO. About W5...
I ended up "legally acquiring" a digital copy of the core book and just finished my first read through of it. Some thoughts.
First of all, let me say my major gripes about it re: indigenous and disability erasure remain present, and do end up being a deal breaker for me regarding Paradox and giving them any money.
Still, there's some interesting stuff in here. I am personally a V5 enjoyer. I dislike 'gothic superhero' type chronicles, cumbersome lore and mechanical bloat. I do like Personal horror, power that comes with serious costs, character-focused storytelling, urban fantasy that feels contemporary and grounded, and brave, direct political themes. so V5 ended up being a general improvement for me over V20, give or take some small things. These are the biasas I'm carrying into my thoughts on W5.
The good: Rage Dice make a return from V5's hunger dice, and with improvements! Hunger dice were controversial in V5, but personally I found them to be a fantastic way to keep the Beast as a present threat in your chronicle. Finally, a reason for being a vampire to actually feel like a curse! And Rage dice in W5 I like even more. I enjoy how they turn failure into success when you're trying to accomplish something violent, but otherwise can cause critical problems with your approach when you're *not* trying to be violent. It really encourages you to get into character and play your character more impatient and aggressive when your rage is higher. Finally, Rage that actually feels like a double-edged sword! The things Rage does is also an improvement for me. I dislike extra actions in TTRPGs, ironically I find that they just slow things down with too much dice rolling. Making Rage something you spend to regenerate faster is a much better idea.
The forms are more distinct and interesting now as well. This is one of the things W5 takes from Forsaken than it very good. Finally, a reason to use Hispo and Glabro! Crinos feels extra powerful, *and* risky, with its rule that it will enter a frenzy if you don't kill something that round making it much more threatening and dangerous, which is precisely how it's always been described in the lore, but never really represented in the game very well until now. Claws are high damage but only deal mundane types of damage and Bite is lower damage but Agg. Also good from a design standpoint, makes the rule about not eating human flesh finally matter.
Harano and Hauglosk. Harano finally becomes a present threat for Garou. Something they need to fight against, and help their pack against. It seems to operate a bit like a humanity stat, only that your sweet spot is in the middle. Too far in the other direction, and your character starts to flirt with fanaticism. This is just fantastic for making Werewolf have an actual morality system, a balance in their faith/convictions based on actions taken in the chronicle. Much more interesting than Gnosis as being an essentially meaningless resource. I have seen some braindead takes about this being a way for STs to punish players?? Don't play with STs who try to punish you and force you to do what they would do. Simple as.
The bad: new takes on the tribes. Generally I like how the book explains lore concepts, but the new tribes are so sanitized with any possible ounce of controversy taken out of them, that the political themes most of them were built to explore are totally absent, or significantly muted. In a vaccum I would think making the Get of Fenris fall would be a very interesting way to drive forward the plot, but the execution here makes them feel a little cartoonist. Very roundabout in saying that they've become werewolf eco-facists, a better way to do this be making a Hauglosk-ed version of each tribe to represent the corruption of each tribe's ideology. The cult of Fenris work as a general condemnation of the worst side of Garou in general, but having the bad guys camps in W20 just worked better for this, and had lots of room for improvement. As with all the other tribes, the Get of Fenris feels flattened and removed from its cultural context.
The Ugly: Paradox being horrible and racist. If you haven't read about this already, then... Idk how you found this post really. But this post covers it more thoroughly than I could.
The book attempts to address this with a note I put in the bottom, listing some facts about the issues experienced by indigenous groups, while making a half hearted attempt to connect it to the Garou. In the face of this erasure from their actual game though, it feels like a platitude.
As for the removal of crinos-born Garou, it's another flattening of a complicated part of the game's politics. It might have been nice to see Garou culture advance a bit, but removing them entirely removes the representation they embodied. Most of the direct representation in this game has been removed, but I think the the indigenous and disability represent the most egregious loss, especially in a game about those who are most actively being sacrificed in the name of capitalism. Which isn't some fandom interpretation, it is literally stated in the book.
This all leaves me very sour on the game's fiction, which for a storytelling game like Werewolf the Apocalypse, is important. Which is a shame, because I see a lot of good steps forward in the mechanics, making a game that's more fiction-first, without all the terrible attempts at capturing D&D's wargame combat. But frankly, it's hard to want a game who's treated it's writers so poorly to do well, even if I do think the current writers did very well with the constraints they were given. It's hard to recommend that anyone pay money for this.

Affordable Housing in Gurgaon: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges
Gurgaon, officially known as Gurugram, is one of India's most rapidly growing cities, located in the northern state of Haryana. Known for its burgeoning IT sector and high-end real estate, Gurgaon has become a magnet for professionals and businesses alike. However, with its growth comes the pressing need to address the challenges of affordable housing. In this article, we’ll explore the current landscape of affordable housing in Gurgaon, the challenges faced, and potential solutions to ensure that the city remains accessible to a diverse population.
The Need for Affordable Housing
Gurgaon’s transformation from a small town to a major urban center has been nothing short of remarkable. As the city attracts more professionals and expatriates, the demand for housing has surged. Unfortunately, this has led to skyrocketing property prices and a gap between the affordable housing supply and the needs of the city’s lower and middle-income residents.
The cost of living in Gurgaon has risen significantly, making it increasingly difficult for many residents to find affordable accommodation. This issue is particularly pressing for those working in the city’s service and manufacturing sectors, who are essential to its functioning but often earn salaries that don’t align with the high cost of housing.
Current Affordable Housing Initiatives
Recognizing the importance of affordable housing, both the government and private developers have embarked on various initiatives to address the issue:
Government Schemes: The Haryana State Government has launched several schemes aimed at promoting affordable housing. Initiatives like the Haryana Affordable Housing Policy and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aim to provide low-cost housing options for economically weaker sections (EWS) and lower-income groups (LIG). These policies offer incentives to developers to build affordable housing projects.
Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborative efforts between the government and private developers have led to the creation of several affordable housing projects in Gurgaon. These partnerships leverage the strengths of both sectors to provide cost-effective housing solutions.
Incentives for Developers: To encourage the construction of affordable housing, the government offers various incentives such as tax breaks, reduced land costs, and streamlined regulatory approvals. These incentives are designed to make it more financially viable for developers to invest in affordable housing projects.
Challenges in Affordable Housing
Despite these efforts, several challenges persist:
High Land Costs: One of the primary obstacles to affordable housing in Gurgaon is the high cost of land. As real estate prices continue to climb, acquiring land for affordable housing projects becomes increasingly expensive, which in turn drives up the cost of housing.
Regulatory Hurdles: Navigating the regulatory environment in Gurgaon can be complex and time-consuming. Developers often face bureaucratic delays and stringent regulations that can impede the progress of affordable housing projects.
Infrastructure Constraints: Adequate infrastructure is crucial for the success of affordable housing projects. Issues such as insufficient public transport, inadequate water supply, and poor sanitation can affect the livability of affordable housing developments, making them less attractive to potential residents.
Balancing Profit and Affordability: Developers often face a dilemma between maximizing profit and providing affordable housing. The pressure to deliver high returns on investment can sometimes lead to compromises on affordability.
Potential Solutions and the Way Forward
Addressing the affordable housing crisis in Gurgaon requires a multifaceted approach:
Enhanced Policy Support: Strengthening and streamlining government policies to support affordable housing can make a significant difference. Simplifying the regulatory framework and providing additional incentives for developers could boost the development of affordable housing projects.
Innovative Construction Techniques: Embracing innovative construction methods and materials can reduce costs and improve the efficiency of affordable housing projects. Techniques such as modular construction and prefabrication can lower construction expenses and expedite project completion.
Focus on Infrastructure Development: Investing in infrastructure improvements in areas designated for affordable housing can enhance the attractiveness and livability of these developments. Ensuring access to reliable public transport, clean water, and effective waste management is essential.
Community Involvement: Engaging with local communities to understand their needs and preferences can help tailor affordable housing projects to better serve the intended residents. Community input can lead to more successful and sustainable housing solutions.
Conclusion
Affordable housing in Gurgaon is a pressing issue that reflects broader challenges faced by rapidly urbanizing cities across the globe. While there are significant efforts underway to address the gap between housing demand and affordability, continued collaboration between the government, developers, and communities is crucial. By embracing innovative solutions and maintaining a focus on inclusivity, Gurgaon can work towards becoming a city where everyone, regardless of income, has access to safe and affordable housing.

By providing sustainable clean water solutions, they are not only improving public health but also empowering communities to manage their water resources effectively. The collective efforts of these organizations are a beacon of hope for millions, ensuring that every individual in Pakistan has access to the most basic necessity of life—clean water.
Challenges Faced by Charity Organizations in Providing Clean Water
Despite the noble efforts of these organizations, there are significant challenges that they must overcome to ensure the provision of clean water across Pakistan. These challenges include:
Geographical Barriers
Pakistan's diverse geography presents a major hurdle in the implementation of clean water projects. The rugged terrain of mountainous regions, such as those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, makes it difficult to transport materials and build water infrastructure. Similarly, the arid deserts of Tharparkar require specialized solutions like deep wells and solar-powered pumps to extract groundwater.
Financial Constraints
Many charity organizations rely heavily on donations and grants, which can fluctuate based on global economic conditions. Limited funding often hampers their ability to scale up operations or invest in advanced technologies. This financial uncertainty can delay critical projects and restrict the reach of clean water initiatives to only the most accessible areas.
Political and Bureaucratic Hurdles
Navigating Pakistan's complex political landscape can be challenging for charity organizations. Delays in obtaining permits, corruption, and bureaucratic red tape can significantly slow down project implementation. Moreover, regional conflicts and instability in certain areas can prevent organizations from operating effectively, putting communities at risk.
Cultural and Social Barriers
Cultural beliefs and practices can sometimes pose challenges to clean water initiatives. For example, in some rural areas, there may be resistance to using certain types of water infrastructure due to traditional practices or misconceptions about water quality. Overcoming these barriers requires extensive community engagement and education to ensure the successful adoption of clean water solutions.
Environmental Factors
Climate change is exacerbating water scarcity in Pakistan, with increasing temperatures and unpredictable rainfall patterns leading to more frequent droughts. These environmental challenges make it difficult to maintain a consistent water supply, especially in already vulnerable regions. Charity organizations must continuously adapt their strategies to address these shifting environmental conditions.
Innovative Solutions and Future Prospects
To overcome these challenges, charity organizations in Pakistan are increasingly turning to innovative solutions. These include:
Solar-Powered Water Systems
The use of solar energy to power water pumps and filtration systems is gaining traction, especially in remote areas where electricity is scarce. Solar-powered systems are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective in the long run, reducing dependency on traditional power sources.
Smart Water Management Technologies
Organizations are beginning to adopt smart water management technologies, such as sensors and IoT devices, to monitor water quality and usage in real-time. These technologies enable more efficient management of water resources and help identify issues like leaks or contamination early on.
Community-Led Water Conservation Programs
Empowering communities to take ownership of water resources is essential for the sustainability of clean water initiatives. Charity organizations are increasingly involving local populations in the planning and maintenance of water projects. This approach not only ensures that the solutions are culturally appropriate but also fosters a sense of responsibility among community members.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Collaboration between charity organizations, government agencies, and the private sector is crucial for scaling up clean water initiatives. By pooling resources and expertise, these entities can tackle larger projects and reach more communities. International partnerships also play a vital role, bringing in advanced technologies and funding that might not be available locally.
The Impact of Clean Water on Communities
Access to clean water has a transformative impact on communities in Pakistan. It improves public health by reducing the prevalence of water-borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery. With reliable access to clean water, children are less likely to miss school due to illness, and adults can engage in productive activities instead of spending hours collecting water.
Moreover, clean water initiatives empower women, who are often the primary water collectors in rural areas. By reducing the time spent on this task, women have more opportunities to pursue education, employment, and other activities that contribute to their personal and community development.
Conclusion: A Collective Responsibility
While the efforts of charity organizations in Pakistan are commendable, addressing the country's water crisis requires a collective effort. It is not just the responsibility of these organizations but also the government, private sector, and the public to contribute towards sustainable water solutions. By supporting these organizations, whether through donations, volunteering, or advocacy, individuals can play a crucial role in ensuring that every person in Pakistan has access to clean, safe drinking water.
The path to universal access to clean water is long and challenging, but with continued dedication and innovation, it is a goal within reach. The organizations highlighted in this article are paving the way, but they need our support to continue their vital work.

India Ceramic Sanitaryware Industry and Overview
Tumblr media
The Indian ceramic sanitaryware industry has seen significant growth over the past decade led by rapid urbanisation and rising income levels. Ceramic sanitaryware includes products used in bathrooms such as wash basins, water closets (toilets), urinals. The growing demand for such products reflects India's improving sanitation levels and changing consumer preferences towards branded durable sanitary products.
India Ceramic Sanitaryware: Raw Material Availability India Ceramic Sanitaryware of key raw materials required for ceramic sanitaryware manufacturing. Key materials include china clay, feldspar and ball clay which are essential for producing vitreous China used in most sanitary fittings. Major china clay reserves are found in the states of West Bengal, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu contain significant ball clay reserves. Availability of ample raw materials within the country reduces production costs and logistics expenses for manufacturers. It also lessens dependence on expensive imports of Vitreous China which is a competitive advantage.
India Ceramic Sanitaryware: Growth of Urban Populations Rapid urbanization has been a major driver of increased sanitaryware demand in India. The urban population is projected to rise to over 600 million by 2030 from 450 million currently. Growing cities require extensive housing and infrastructure development. This translates to rising spends on bathroom fittings by property developers, builders as well as urban migrant populations seeking better living standards. Increased purchases of durable sanitaryware such aswash basins, western style toilets have been key segments driving industry value growth.
Rise of the Indian Middle Class Economic liberalization since the 1990s has led to a substantial expansion of India's consuming middle class population estimated at over 200 million individuals. As discretionary spending power rises among this segment, there is increased consumerism even for household amenities like bathroom fittings previously considered as luxuries. The introduction of attractive and affordable options by Indian sanitaryware brands has enabled wider penetration and 'trading up' from basic to premium variants in urban as well as tier 2/3 cities. This expanded customer base seeking aesthetic styles and hygienic products is critical for ongoing sectoral progress.
Government of India Ceramic Sanitaryware Growth Initiatives Various government schemes and reforms have supported the industry's evolution especially in rural regions. 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' aimed at eliminating open defecation has spurred projects across villages to construct individual and community toilets. Funding for plumbing, sanitation facilities in residential projects has been ramped up under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. This has boosted demand from government channels in addition to raising awareness about hygienic bathroom practices nationwide. Simplified GST rates along with production linked incentives are encouraging larger investments and modernization efforts by sanitaryware manufacturers.
Rise of Organized Players Favorable policies and growing consumption has led to significant consolidation in the ceramic sanitaryware industry with organized sector players gaining market share. Large companies such as Cera, Hindustan Sanitaryware and Industries Limited (HSIL), Parryware, Kohler and Roca accounted for over 35% of domestic sales revenues in 2020 compared to just 10-15% a decade ago. These brands offer a wide array of restroom options along with premium designer products and wellness categories like faucets and showers. Many have established extensive retail networks across the country in addition to lucrative collaborations with builders. Economies of scale and enhanced quality standards are helping them outperform smaller unorganized peers over the long run.
Export Growth Potential India exported USD 225 million worth of ceramic tiles and sanitaryware products in FY21 displaying resilient growth despite pandemic restrictions. Major export destinations include the Middle East, African countries as well as the United States. Indian vitrified tiles are competitively priced in global markets due to access to low cost clay materials. Furthermore, 'Made in India' brands like CAMA are making inroads by catering vitreous China products tailored to needs in developing markets. With additional efforts to promote Indian capabilities and sign free trade agreements, the government aims to multiply ceramic exports to USD 1 billion by 2025. This reflects the industry's rising export orientation bolstered by cost advantages and improving quality benchmarks.
Rising Investments Established players as well as new entrants are committing large capex to expand capacity and diversify product offerings. HSIL, the country's largest producer is spending Rs. 650 crores over 2020-23 for backend integration, new plants and retail showrooms. Cera Sanitaryware allocated Rs. 200 crores in 2021-22 focusing on vitreous units. Kajaria Ceramics too added 2 new bathware lines last year taking total capacity to 50,000 pieces/day. Many Chinese and European firms are evaluating JVs/greenfield projects to tap the booming Indian demand. Such investments demonstrate long term confidence of stakeholders on India's role as a global sanitaryware hub supported by its market depth and consumption trends.
Changing Consumer Preferences With higher spending ability as well as awareness regarding latest styles, customers are displaying evolving tastes. There is rising demand for customization, multifunctional accessories as well as smart, IoT enabled sanitary items. ‘Designer’ and ‘premium’ segments incorporating features like anti-bacterial glazes, sensor based controls are witnessing maximum growth. Tier 2/3 towns also seek on-trend offerings beyond basic products. Manufacturers are launching new collections, partnering with designers as well as leveraging digital platforms to interact closer with clients. This has ensured the industry remains nimble in delivering improved solutions catering contemporary requirements of urban residents.
Backed by supportive demographics and policies, India's ceramic sanitaryware industrywill likely maintain double digit expansion over the next 5 years. While meeting huge domestic needs, focus on exports, professionalization and innovation shall strengthen its positioning as a leading global hub. Continuous efforts to enhance skill sets, optimize costs as well as tap non-metro, rural territories present extensive untapped opportunities. Online shopping platforms, in particular, have seen increased sales of trash bags, with consumers appreciating the convenience of home delivery and the ability to compare different products and prices easily.
Customization and Branding: Some manufacturers are exploring opportunities to offer customized trash bags for businesses, particularly in the hospitality and retail sectors. Custom branding and tailored sizes or features allow businesses to align their waste management practices with their brand identity and operational needs.
Rising Demand from the Commercial Sector: The commercial sector, including hotels, restaurants, and offices, is increasingly contributing to the demand for trash bags in Turkey.
