January 2024: Fog, Birds & Glorious Green
Saturday's rainy, foggy walk:
Tumblr media
It doesn't look like anything from here:

But this is the reality of melting snow & drizzly rain. I see one or two Wilson's Snipes almost every time I walk here this time of year. I've tried to take photos of the snipes on multiple occasions but the photos were all blurry sacks of suck. Your average Bigfoot photo is crystal clear in comparison. Snipes are fast, camouflaged & fly in a natural zigzag pattern. I imagine the only way I'll ever get a decent photo of one is if I find it dead on the ground:

First alien abduction of 2024. The only thing left was this poor bastard's hat on the driveway:

Bought a new bird feeder since the gray squirrels jacked the old one up & this warbler was the first one to try it out. Birds can be leery of new feeders because their dinosaur ancestors imparted to them the wisdom that all new things aren't necessarily good. After all, that meteorite was something new & nothing good:

With the freezing temperatures gone for awhile, we uncovered our cool season vegetables so they could enjoy some unfiltered light:

Not ready yet but this broccoli is getting there:

GRAND GUIGNOL
one of two cover artworks for Possum Creek Games' latest double-feature tabletop games, Grand Guignol & Harvest, written by @wildwoodsgames. There's a few more days to back this project if you like themes of intimacy, monstrosity and the Gothic.

Crows in the concrete bed of the creek. The surrounding neighborhood is prone to light flooding in the winters, but in the summer it's rarely more than a trickle. Deer, crows, raccoons, and humans use it for various purposes. It once (before all the concrete) flooded so disastrously that people in this neighborhood (historically – like many flood-plain areas – a low-income area that has since seen a steep increase in property values) died or lost their homes. In the first shot you can see where the concrete starts – upstream of that, it's a tangle of stone and ivy.

in an attempt to have more townies in willow creek, i’m making some low income apartments. i wanted it to look like a street that you likely wouldn’t come down unless you work here or live here. i had the dark asphalt at first but i rarely ever see streets that dark so i scrapped that.
i love this lot so far but idk how i feel about it for this exact spot. i was kind of spitballin’ and playing around w/ stuff to see what i could come up with. originally i was gonna do like a mall or shopping center of some sort because in my mind, this lot and the one next to it leads to newcrest which will be downtown detroit. but i didn’t know what i could put in a mall for a 50x50 lot that i would actually visit in gameplay.
anyway, if i end up keeping it, im definitely gonna have to do something to make it make more sense in this spot. like with TOOL

Rivers and streams around Atlanta
Tumblr media
This top image is taken from a map of the rivers and streams around Atlanta. Pretty amazing! You can find it at: opendata.atlantaregional.com
And this doesn't even include springs in the city center that have been diverted underground! You can see those in this second image, taken from an excellent article by Hannah Palmer called "The scent of water: Searching for hidden springs in downtown Atlanta" (Atlanta Magazine).
Tumblr media
We don't celebrate our water enough. These streams should be a point of pride, like our tree canopy. They should be cleaned up and accessible to the public.
Hannah gave a presentation about Atlanta's natural water last week at Night of Ideas and I've been thinking about it a lot. You can judge a place by how well it values its natural waters, and also by looking at who does and doesn't have access to water.
Also: check out the Atlanta Creek League project for a fun look at our creeks: atlantacreekleague.com
