SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO ENGAGE WITH 'PROBLEMATIC' MEDIA IN ORDER TO DEVELOP YOUR CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

gotta be real serious here, promoting media literacy is kind of The Goal as far as trying to get people to stop needlessly absorbing shitty ideas from media. purity culture stuff like judging and shaming them isn't just unhelpful in that it tends to shut people off from becoming more progressive, it's actively harmful because it promotes a LACK of media literacy. the goal shifts from trying to interface with the media and interpret what it's saying and means to just trying to consume the "good" media and only absorb "good" ideas.

id much rather have a friend who's really into cop shows but understands the harm they do than someone who only reads anti-racist literature but absorbs none of it

#ur so right cemeterything #man this reminds me of when jk rowling was first getting canceled and it wasnt Quite as obvious as it is now #and i picked up some of the hp books again like 'separating the art and artist'#and looking at them again for the first time since middle school post ap lang ap lit and ib lit and all these college level english classes #it was like a fucking lightbulb went off #i was like 'holy shit how did i not see all this racism how did i not see all these underlying biases being pushed in these books'#honestly its kind of valuable to read those books again and see this shit #and if hypothetically someone were to read it for the first time and someone told them 'hey be careful its kinda racist' they would be #on the lookout for that and not just absorbing those ideas and Maybe unpacking them later
