I think Curly being fired a long with the rest of the crew even with the recommendation still invokes he did not get what he wanted through that.

Curly was feeling unfulfilled at work and in his career, yes. He was considering quitting along with sticking it out cause it’s what he’s known and feel secure in, even if not satisfied. You think getting fired would be a great thing for him, that’s a part of Jimmy’s scathing thought process and twisting of the cock pit conversation. However, the most important aspect is that Curly got to make that final decision for himself.

Curly does not get to decide if he’s actually ready to take that step and branch out and it likely worsened whatever was spinning in his head into a spiral because now he has to think of what he’s gonna do. It can’t wait and I believe his misplaced idea of curtouy in telling the crew was his way of not invoking the same feeling within them. For him to be able to sit on it for months while they couldn’t, it was not fair the same way it isn’t fair to assume he would wanted that as an excuse to leave piloting.

It’s good to note that no one really got to fully choose what they wanted to do. Just a whole lot of reactions…. And inactions.

#a lot of major choices in pre crash sections are made for curly inadvertently in terms of having to act and while he should have #acted sooner it is not blaming anyone to say that most of his reactions stem from not being prepared to have his hand forced #and fumbling whatever he is moved towards ala Jimmy crashing the ship and Anya telling Jim #in the eval convo he clearly is just venting about what he MAY want to do and heavy on the may #he may just continue to settle and he may uproot #but in terms of choice he’s still pushed in directions rather than just simply choosing one and even when he does that it’s because someone #or thing has slammed a door in his face like every action of every character invokes a curl of the monkeys paw #not just curly and like I think of this as he def did not benefit from being fired #the woes of the artificial class divide companies establish between their workers #ur foreman is not living large like the executives he’s just makes 2 dollars more which is a lot and that’s scary but it’s certainly #not lavish or as secure as you think and I think when applied to the scene it is in full affect #mouthwashing #captain curly #mouthwashing game #curly mouthwashing
