India things!
Project Cheetah, India's ambitious attempt to introduce African cheetahs in the wild in the country, has been completed a year after its launch in September 2022.
The project has claimed to have achieved short-term success on four counts: “50% survival of introduced cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia, the establishment of home ranges, the birth of cubs in Kuno”, and revenue generation for local communities.
According to the Cheetah reintroduction project, Cheetahs, meant for a total of 142 months in the wild, spent less than 27 months combined.
The project faced a setback with a 40% loss in the functional adult population, resulting in the death of six out of 20 cheetahs, including Dhatri, Sasha, Suraj, Uday, Daksha, and Tejas.Additionally, four cubs were born in India, of which three died, and the fourth is being raised in captivity.
Only three cheetahs, namely Namibian imports Asha, Gaurav, and Shaurya, spent more than three months continuously in the wild. However, they have been confined to bomas(enclosures) since July 2023.
There are doubts about the successful establishment of "home ranges" in Kuno.

Navigating the UPSC Journey: A Strategic Guide for Aspiring Civil Servants
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and prestigious exams in India. It is the gateway to a career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other high-ranking civil services. Successful navigation of this rigorous examination requires a well-rounded approach involving strategic planning, disciplined study, and effective resource utilization. This guide aims to offer a comprehensive strategy for aspiring candidates, focusing on practical tips, essential resources, and effective study practices.
1. Understanding the UPSC Examination Structure
To effectively prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, it’s crucial to understand its structure and stages:
Preliminary Examination:
General Studies Paper I: Tests knowledge in subjects such as Indian History, Geography, Current Events, Indian Polity, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, and General Science.
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) Paper II: Focuses on skills like Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Ability, and Decision Making.
Mains Examination:
Essay Paper: Requires writing two essays on diverse topics to assess analytical and writing skills.
General Studies Papers I-IV:
GS I: Covers Indian Heritage, Culture, History, and Geography.
GS II: Deals with Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
GS III: Includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.
GS IV: Focuses on Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
Optional Subject Papers: One subject chosen by the candidate from a list of available options.
Interview (Personality Test): Assesses the candidate’s suitability for a career in civil services based on their personality, knowledge, and demeanor.
2. Creating an Effective Study Plan
A well-structured study plan is essential for managing the vast syllabus and achieving exam success:
Initial Setup:
Syllabus Breakdown: Thoroughly review the syllabus for each stage of the exam. Create a detailed study plan that allocates time for each subject and topic.
Resource Gathering: Collect essential books, study materials, and subscriptions to current affairs magazines.
Daily Routine:
Focused Study Sessions: Dedicate specific time slots for different subjects and stick to a regular study schedule.
Balanced Approach: Incorporate time for reading, note-taking, practice questions, and revision.
Prelims Preparation:
Conceptual Mastery: Focus on understanding core concepts and practicing multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Stay updated with current events and general knowledge.
Mains Preparation:
Answer Writing Practice: Develop skills in writing comprehensive and analytical answers. Practice writing essays and integrate knowledge across various subjects.
Optional Subject Mastery: Deepen your understanding of the chosen optional subject through targeted study and practice.
Interview Preparation:
Mock Interviews: Participate in mock interviews to practice answering questions confidently and articulate responses effectively.
Current Affairs Knowledge: Keep abreast of recent developments and be prepared to discuss them in the interview.
3. Utilizing Essential Resources
Selecting and using the right resources can significantly impact your preparation:
Books:
General Studies: Recommended texts include "Indian Polity" by M. Laxmikanth, "A Brief History of Modern India" by Rajiv Ahir, "Indian Economy" by Ramesh Singh, and "Environment and Ecology" by Majid Husain.
Current Affairs: Regularly read newspapers like "The Hindu" or "The Indian Express" and subscribe to monthly magazines such as "Yojana" and "Kurukshetra".
Online Resources:
Websites and Apps: Use UPSC-focused websites and apps for updated study materials, current affairs, and practice tests.
Online Communities: Engage with online forums and discussion groups to share knowledge and gain insights from other aspirants.
Previous Years’ Papers and Mock Tests:
Analysis: Study previous years’ question papers to understand the exam pattern and frequently asked questions.
Practice: Regularly attempt mock tests to improve time management, evaluate your performance, and identify areas for improvement.
4. Effective Study Techniques
Employing efficient study techniques can enhance your preparation:
Active Learning: Engage actively with the study material through note-making, summarizing, and discussing topics with peers.
Revision: Regularly revise key concepts and notes to reinforce learning and retention.
Time Management: Practice answering questions within the allotted time to build speed and accuracy.
5. Balancing Study with Well-being
Maintaining balance and well-being is crucial for effective preparation:
Regular Breaks: Incorporate short breaks into your study routine to avoid burnout and maintain focus.
Physical Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to stay healthy and energized.
Mental Health: Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga, and ensure you allocate time for hobbies and relaxation.
6. Final Tips for Success
Consistency and Dedication: Stick to your study plan with consistency and dedication. Regular study and disciplined time management are key to covering the syllabus effectively.
Adaptability: Be flexible and ready to adjust your strategies based on your progress and feedback from mock tests.
Self-Assessment: Regularly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Use this feedback to refine your preparation strategies and focus on areas needing improvement.
Conclusion
Successfully navigating the UPSC Civil Services Examination requires a blend of strategic planning, disciplined study, and effective resource management. By understanding the exam structure, creating a comprehensive study plan, leveraging essential resources, and maintaining a balanced approach to health and well-being, candidates can enhance their chances of success.
