BAYAN USA congratulates the workers of Jollibee in Journal Square, New Jersey for their recent campaign victories that have moved them closer and closer to a milestone win against corporate greed. After workers filed an unfair labor practice complaint to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the NLRB responded by filing its own complaint against Jollibee after finding merit that the company had unlawfully terminated and retaliated against the workers. The NLRB’s action is a result of the tireless organizing and collective action of the Jollibee workers at Journal Square, as well as the broad network of support from both Filipino and non-Filipino communities.
BAYAN USA calls on the Filipino community and allies alike to support the Justice for Jollibee Workers Campaign’s month of action, leading up to October 11, the day Jollibee is set to appear in court for the case.
The class enemies behind Jollibee
Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) is a billion dollar business owned by Tony Tan Caktiong, the 5th richest person in the Philippines. Caktiong is unquestionably part of the class of big comprador bourgeoisie, one that makes its living from exploiting the resources of the Philippines — including labor — for the benefit of the imperialist market. In addition to its flagship fast food brand, JFC has also “diversified” its business ventures to other restaurants (such as Chowking, Red Ribbon, Smashburger, and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf), and even hotel chains. Their rapid business expansion comes from the exploitation of Filipino and non-Filipino workers alike.
In the Philippines, JFC was listed by the Department of Labor and Employment in 2018 as one of the companies with the most contractual employees, purposefully denying long-term contractual workers the right to job security and benefits. In the U.S., JFC-owned Smashburger was ordered to pay damages to 241 employees after being found to have violated New York City’s paid and sick leave laws.
A large factor in the aggressive growth of JFC is, in fact, the overseas expansion of Jollibee itself. Capitalizing off the forced migration of millions of Filipinos to every corner of the world, Caktiong has been able to profit off the nostalgia of OFWs and Filipinos in diaspora. In 2021, overseas markets contributed to around 40 percent of JFC’s overall revenue. And in 2022, almost one quarter of Jollibee’s revenues came from U.S. sales alone: $31 million out of $135 million. Even now, JFC has an aggressive plan to expand Jollibee by 500 stores in the next 5 to 7 years in North America.
These facts reveal how bold-faced of a lie the Jollibee Journal Square upper management team’s “reason” was for firing the workers: that the store was supposedly “losing money” and thus had to let workers go. In response to the NLRB’s complaint, Jollibee even admitted that it had actually made hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue over the past 12 months, before and during the terminations that happened in February this year.
As JFC celebrates its 45th anniversary with the theme “#JoyfulTogether”, it is clear that only comprador capitalists like Caktiong remain joyful, while the workers live in misery. Despite painting a picture of family between management and workers, the class interests of the capitalists and the workers are irreconcilable.
No help from the Philippine government
BAYAN USA also calls to question the inaction of the Philippine government in such a high profile case. Both the Department of Foreign Affairs through its Philippine Consul General in New York, as well as the Department of Migrants Workers through its U.S.-based Migrant Workers Offices, are charged with providing service and assistance to Philippine nationals facing employment-related complaints.
Yet there has not been even a single word from the government since the campaign went public in July. If the representatives of the Philippine government in the Northeast were in tune with our community, they would know that many of the workers at the Journal Square store — and many other locations, for that matter — are still Philippine passport-holders, and thus entitled to assistance. At the end of the day, it is no wonder why the government remains silent. The interests of the big comprador capitalist class are intertwined with those in political power.
Justice for Jollibee Workers!
The victories of the Jollibee Journal Square workers are proof that when workers unite, get organized and take action together to demand for higher wages, better working conditions, and an end to exploitative systems, change can happen. BAYAN USA encourages Filipino workers across the country to learn from and be inspired by their fight. We pledge to be there in support of the hundreds of other workers’ struggles for higher wages and better working conditions just waiting to be launched.
To the broad public, join us in conducting public education, gathering signatures, holding rallies, and releasing solidarity statements in support of the Jollibee workers. Let us continue uplifting their demands for reinstatement, back pay and compensation, a public apology, and for JFC to notify and inform workers of their rights in all stores. Beyond this current fight, let us also drum up the demand for a living wage and the right to organize for Jollibee workers in Journal Square and everywhere.
Justice for Jollibee Workers! Get organized! Fight for higher wages and better working conditions! Defend the right to organize! Defend workers rights! The fight of Jollibee workers is the fight of the entire Filipino community!
-- "Organize and Fight! All-Out Support for the Justice 4 Jollibee Workers Campaign" from BAYAN USA, 1 Oct 2023

Why did Hema turn around again?
Hou Yi’s words are not an exaggeration.
If starting a business is to sort out the inside first and then conquer the outside, Hema has only been able to completely sort out the inside HE Tuber nine years after it was founded.
Since its establishment, Hema has tried more than 10 business formats, including Hema F2, Hema mini, Hema Neighborhood, Hema X member store, Hema Outlet, Hema Premier and so on.
Trying means unknown results. According to public data, Hema lost about 3 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2021 alone. It was not until January 2023 that Hou Yi issued an all-staff letter, officially announcing that the main business Hema Xiansheng had achieved profitability; in April of the same year, He said in an interview with the media that Hema has achieved full profitability in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023.
If what Hou Yi said is true, it will be even more critical for Hema to hold on to this hard-won result. Especially in the face of severe competition, Hema needs to prove itself with sustained profits.
In May last year, Alibaba stated in its financial report that the Alibaba Group's board of directors approved the launch of the listing process for Hema, which is expected to be completed within the next 6 to 12 months. But soon, news came out frequently that Hema's IPO might press the "pause button."
Alibaba said in its third-quarter financial report that Hema's initial public offering plan is on hold while the group is evaluating market conditions and other factors necessary to ensure successful project implementation and enhance shareholder value.
On the other hand, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in November 2023, the national consumer price dropped by 0.5% year-on-year; on average from January to November, the national consumer price increased by only 0.3% compared with the same period last year.
“Price reduction” has become the unified theme online and offline.
Online, JD.com and Taotian have both given up their positioning of focusing on the urban middle class/white-collar population and embarked on the path of low-price strategies; last year’s Double 11, major e-commerce platforms, MCN companies, and anchors also all aimed at “the lowest prices on the entire network.” The dispute over "price" was fierce.
Offline, in the face of the explosive trend of Mixue Bingcheng stores with more than 20,000 stores, consumer brands such as Heytea and Nayuki's Tea have also launched low-priced beverage series.
Similarly, in the supermarket format, not only Hema and Sam's are engaged in a price war, supermarket chains such as Yonghui, Wal-Mart, and Carrefour have also lowered their product prices.
It can be said that Hema and many supermarket brands have also reached a time when they have to change.
Today's low-price strategy has the meaning of "a strong man cutting off his wrist" for Hema, and can even be called a "key move" for Hema. But can this move bring Hema back to life?
3. If the giant changes direction again, what are Hema’s chances of winning?
The low-price strategy has indeed attracted consumers' attention to Hema, but if Hema wants to achieve and maintain full profitability in the short term through "discount reform", how far is the journey ahead?
On the one hand, it will still take time for Hema to shift to a low-price strategy. Since Hema's discount reform was officially launched in October last year, its relationship with its suppliers has attracted widespread attention from the outside world. At the end of December last year, Wang Xiaolu announced that he would stop cooperating with the Hema system because he was dissatisfied with the discount reform. It is emphasized that "the price is the lifeline of the company and dealers, and selling in violation of the price is harmful to everyone's common interests."
Many other brands have also become dissatisfied with Hema, including mid-to-high-end tea consumer brand Chabiubiu. Its founder once issued a long article to denounce Hema, saying that since October 21 last year, Hema’s products have been removed from the shelves, and tens of thousands of boxes of goods have been required to be removed within a time limit; he then accused Hema of unilaterally removing inventory products. The price was reduced from 79 yuan/box to 39.98 yuan/box, causing many customers who had placed orders at high prices through other channels to ask for refunds.
On October 20, 2023, Gu Guojian, a professor at Shanghai Business School, published an article on the public account and revealed that because Hema’s low-price strategy has destroyed the market price system, big brands have begun to suspend and cut off the supply of Hema, and carry out a “strangling” style of encirclement and suppression. ".
This is a problem that Hema must face with its low-price strategy,
but fortunately Hema does not seem to care about the "breakup" of the partnership. It is said that Hou Yi not only forwarded Professor Gu Guojian's article, but also revealed that because of selling a certain milk product at a discount, , Hema has been "banned across the entire network" by the dairy company, adding that this does not affect Hema's determination to promote discounts.
This also shows Hou Yi's determination in reform and his confidence in future victory.
However, the discount reform is just the beginning. Hema will continue to implement the low-price strategy in 2024. According to Sina reports, Hema’s goal is to streamline the number of Hema’s SKUs from the existing 8,000 to about 5,000. . This data means that Hema Fresh will be closer to the two major benchmark brands in the future - Sam's Club's SKUs are controlled at about 4,000 all year round, and Costco's is even less, about 3,700.
Hou Yi also said that in the future, Hema will implement the "753" price system, that is, KA products are 30% off the market price, private brands are 50% off the market price, and late-issue products are 30% off the market price.
A large number of SKUs were "eliminated", and the prices of branded products were discounted by 30%. This was too fast and too fierce. It is understandable that such a strong medicine would make it difficult for partners to resist in a short time.
For Hema, this may be a strategic shift decision, but what is involved behind it is the interests of the entire industry chain. It is difficult for many brand owners to respond to the new price system and supply requirements with a single order, so they can only "resist" by suspending or cutting off supply.
It can be speculated that if Hema cannot smooth out the cooperative relationships with many brand merchants in the supply chain in a timely manner, and does not even care whether they are willing to continue to cooperate with them in the future, it will have an adverse impact on its long-term development.
From another perspective
the discount reform currently implemented by Hema has become a standard feature in the consumer field, rather than an exclusive advantage.
First, Sam's, which is fighting against the "mountain-moving price", is also implementing discounts. Zhang Qing, chief purchasing officer of Sam's Club China, recently told the media that in the last 12 months, Sam's invested nearly 1 billion yuan in cost reinvestment in product prices, allowing dozens of products that members purchase daily to achieve long-term price reductions.
At the same time, other domestic supermarkets are also lowering their prices. Under this industry trend, it is difficult for the discount reform to bring any exclusive advantages to Hema.
Secondly, the sudden rise of real-time retail will also have a huge impact on the domestic supermarket industry. On December 1, 2023, Meituan Maicai quietly changed its name to "Little Elephant Supermarket" and launched a series of price reduction promotions; recently, platforms such as JD Daojia and Ele.me have also made frequent moves in the direction of instant retail.
For Hema, in the current discount reform, its competitors are not only supermarkets such as Sam, Yonghui, Carrefour, and Wal-Mart, but also Xiaoxiang Supermarket, JD Daojia, Tmall Supermarket, Duoduo Maicai, and Dingdong Maicai. and other online platforms.
Hema is currently facing a very complex situation, which is a great test of the strategic determination and execution ability of the helmsman. However, reform will inevitably have pains. What is the chance of Hema winning? It can only take a long time to see the results of the change. At this time, any It's too early to draw any conclusions.

It was lightly raining as well, so that made the court slippery. I was talking to him and then we witnessed a ball got stuck between the hoop and the board. I tried to get it by running and jumping, but i missed. I couldn't stop myself and that resulted in me slipping and falling right on my ass and back in front of him! I laughed it off and he was asking if i was alright! It was so funny! I may bring it up again when i see him, but i'm not sure when
10: What’s their cutest moment so far? This is cute to me but when we were in an assembly, B made sure that I was on the side in case I needed to to have a break from the noice and he watched he like a hawk while standing next to me the whole time. There are so many stories for everyone but it would take forever
11: Have you gone on a field trip with them yet? If so, to where? Yes, it was earlier this year and the whole year level went on an excursion to a sports field near our school to to some things. B came with us which was good! When everyone got to have lunch, I was just sitting on a mini balcony and drawing and B asked if everything was ok and saw that I was drawing Later that year, there was a school event and S and B was there. I had a job to do which was to collect students and get them to their events. S decided to get my attention out of the hundreds of other students because he knew me the best and though I was the most responsible!
12: Have you got any selfies with them? If yes, where were they taken? Not really, sadly. I may get some when I graduate though! Who knows. Hopefully i get one with S soon!

14: Are you and your TC close? Do you talk to them often? S and I are REALLY FUCKING CLOSE! He tells me things that others don’t really know about. B and I are sort of close. We are close enough that we have conversations more than the average student but not at much as S
15: Do they have any pets? B had a cat a while ago. That’s all I’m aware of
16: Is there anything about them you wish you could change? I think the most obvious thing that i would like to change is B's age
17: Is there a particular song that reminds you of them? I have a whole list dedicated to this but I will just put one song from each B: Cool For The Summer - Demi Lovato S: Enchanted - Taylor Swift
18: Do you have dreams about them? If so, what is the best dream you’ve had about them so far? Yes I do! So, I had this dream where I was at some sort of fair thing and I went with S on a date
19: What sort of girlfriend/boyfriend/partner do you think they’ll be? I feel like B would be the protective type. He would be protective but not too protective. S would be a fun/cuddly one! I feel like he would be perfect for date night and stuff
20: What’s their sense of humour like? Can they make you laugh? They make me laugh all the time. S and B are sarcastic 99% of the time which is good!
21: Are they usually your ‘type?’ If not, what attracted you to them? Well, they are the same but different in a way. But the main thing that attracted me to them were their looks and personality
22: Are they more of an introvert or an extrovert? They are both extroverts
23: What is their classroom like? Do they put a lot of pictures up? With S and B, their classrooms were both fun! they both had pictures up from other classes and for our class
24: Has anyone in your life caught on to your crush for them? Hahahahaha, yes. One of my friends knows that I like S. She tries to get me to talk to him when we see him! I nearly told her once that i like B
25: What caused you to realise that you have a crush on them? I started realising that I liked B when we were talking for a bit and I started talking to him more. I was denying it for a hot minute, but then i had to accept that i liked him. For S, my friend was telling me that she had S for the last term of the year when the school was testing him out. We were also seeing what classes he taught on our school page. Ever since I have liked S, it has caused our bond to grow bigger and stronger to the point that he doesn’t tell other students the things he tells me
26: How long have you had a crush on them now? It has been around a year since i started to like them. The best year of my life
27: What is their body type? S is VERY tall and fit. If i had to guess, he is around 6'4" maybe. B is a bit taller than me but shorter than S. He is fit as well
28: Do they have any school events they especially enjoy? How about ones they don’t like? S: The school does an athletics event once a year where the students do a bunch of activities for the day which he likes. B: Anything to do with debating
29: How long have they been teaching for? At my school, B would’ve been teaching for 2 years while S would’ve been teaching for 3 years.

CUET Entrance Exam 2022: Was Difficult or Not?
Introduction
How difficult is the CUCET Entrance Exam 2022? Lots of aspirants worry about it and wonder how they'll pass. If you are one of them, then this article will answer all your questions, whether it's a challenge or not. As a matter of fact, if you are in your final year and planning to apply for CUCET 2021 entrance exam, so do not miss this article for any details about CUCET Entrance Exam 2022. The CUET Entrance Exam was a difficult exam? It was or it wasn't! We all prepared for the CUET entrance exam with a certain level of enthusiasm. The exam was difficult at some point and some students failed to clear it. But if you studied well and studied properly as per my advice, then you will definitely clear it successfully.
CUCET Entrance Exam 2022 Difficulty level
The CUCET 2022 resistance value cannot be predicted because the government will administer it, and it won't be known until after the exam what innovations they'll apply. Yet a candidate might anticipate a reasonable level of complexity for the CUCET in 2022 based on trends from the previous year. It is not anticipated that the level of difficulty of the questions in Part A of the exam will change. Simple quantitative aptitude tests will be administered, but there will also be additional arithmetic questions. A candidate should anticipate 10th-grade-level questions. Students need to review the arithmetic from grade 10 in order to perform better on exams. The English language and Logical Reasoning portions will continue to be simple.
The complexity of the questions on the CUCET entrance exam 2022 will therefore have an impact on the expected cut-offs. Each partnering university will set its own cutoffs based on the availability of seats in each programme. A medium level of difficulty is anticipated for the CUCET entrance exam in 2022. Everything is therefore subject to the rulers' will. A candidate should therefore be well-equipped to handle any unexpected questions that may come up on the exam.
CUCET Entrance Exam 2022 Syllabus
English, numerical aptitude, data interpretation, analytical skills, reasoning, general aptitude, and general knowledge questions make up Part A of the CUET 2022 Exam. Querying the Text Additionally, the pupils' language abilities are evaluated using comprehension (based on a variety of passage types, such as factual, literary, and narrative [literary aptitude vocabulary]). The topic that students select on their CUET 2022 Registration Form will be studied according to the NCERT model curriculum since it is solely relevant to Class XII.
Preparedness advice
Due to the fact that it is a requirement for admission to universities, it is anticipated that the CUCET would take place after the board exams. However, it is crucial to begin the preparations as soon as possible because the board tests will start in the second half of April. Create a calendar that incorporates the CU-CET aptitude test in the following 40 to 45 days before the board exams. Spend 90-120 minutes every day developing your phonological awareness and logical reasoning. Maintain your momentum even when taking the board exams. Making a plan is simple, but sticking to it requires commitment.
Join the best coaching classes for CUET Entrance Exam like StudyByTech. The study from the best.
Conclusion
In order to give students who obtained subpar grades in Class 12 a second chance at success, the CUCET Entrance Exam was introduced in 2022. The importance of students being eligible to take the CUCET Exam was discussed in great depth in the section above. The students find it challenging to prepare since they lack knowledge and expertise. The admission criteria and methods used by the universities may or may not have been impartial and fair. As a result, institutions with high cutoffs have gained importance, while those with low cutoffs have not garnered as much attention. There are many coaching institutes providing CUET coaching classes like StudyByTech. And it's course material is also considered as 1 of the most updated & recommended materials among students to study to clear the exam.

After the tragic killing of George Floyd in 2020, much of the virtue-signalling that followed focused on an unexpected target: admissions processes. Activists claimed children “of colour” weren’t getting their fair share of places at good schools — or, to be precise, black and Hispanic children weren’t. The same couldn’t be said of Asian children. And so Asian students became a convenient scapegoat for “anti-racists”.
At my son’s school, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ), Asian children account for about 70% of the student body. Many have worked incredibly hard to get into the prestigious institute, supported by first generation immigrant parents who, like me, see education as the best route to security and success. But in the months when America was rocked by race riots, self-described “equity warriors” described the Asian, mostly immigrant families of TJ as “white-adjacent” and “resource hoarders”. The white principal, Ann Bonitatibus, told us to check our “privileges”, while one teacher called on her to push through a “Diversity Initiative” while “The Iron is hot!”
In the months that followed, the local school board — all 12 members endorsed by the Democratic Party — voted to remove the school’s merit-based, race-blind admissions process, and replace it with one that was race-based. Along with other parents I was horrified by the school’s readiness to use identity, rather than achievement, as the basis of admissions. But when we objected, the Virginia education secretary, a Democrat, told our families that preparing for tests was like using illegal “performance enhancement drugs”. A black father, Harry Jackson, who spoke up for our cause was called a “motherfucker” selling “segregationist bullshit” — by a white activist who uses the Twitter handle @Antiracist14. These “anti-racists” have worked day and night to try to silence us, using pressure and insults, instead of debating us.
And our story is far from unusual: racist admissions processes are being reintroduced across America. Take the case of San Francisco’s elite Lowell High School, which garnered national attention last week: the overwhelmingly progressive city — Republicans account for less than 7% of the electorate — voted to recall three Democratic members of the school board in a landslide. One of those fired was Alison Collins who, in a now infamous tweet, had called Asian Americans “house n****rs”, insinuating that Asian parents who disagreed with her plan to turn an outstanding school into an experiment in racialism are captive to white supremacist forces.
Like at TJ, activists waged a war on merit at Lowell, in the name of “equity”. Asian Americans, through diligence and ambition, had earned an impressive number of slots — so they were disparaged as “privileged” by anti-racist activists, who called on the school to replace merit-based testing with a lottery. The result was striking. Asian freshmen admitted to Lowell in 2021 fell to 42% from 50% the year before. White enrolment also decreased, to 16% from 21%. Black students increased to 5% from 2% and Hispanic students rose to 25% from 14%.
This process doesn’t just harm Asian American students. Despite increasing the enrolment of black and Hispanic students, schools like TJ put little effort into preparing them for their advanced academic classes. In school district enrolment figures made public for the first time, eight freshmen students, admitted through the new race-based admissions process, dropped out of TJ over just five months, between September 2021 and January 2022 (in the entire school year before, just one student dropped out). Changing admissions processes of outstanding schools does nothing to address the systemic failure of the education system to ensure these students are ready for rigorous training in Maths and Science. It also insults and demeans the achievements of black and Hispanic students who get into schools like Lowell and TJ through sacrifice and achievement. The message is clear: stop trying so hard. (The school district claims its new admissions process is “race neutral.”)
The United States Constitution — and common sense — tell us that a just society requires equality of opportunity, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or social status. “Equity” is a divisive, illiberal system fundamentally at odds with this ideal, because it preaches that there is a quota of opportunities for every group; individuals now find that their skin colour ends up being more important than their hard work.
One year ago, I waited in a virtual waiting room to express those views to the San Francisco school board. I wanted to explain that it had made me sick to my stomach to witness the disdain endured by parents who look like me, for immigrants from Asia with dreams like my family’s. I’ve written here before about how I moved to New Jersey from India, as a child who spoke no English. What I didn’t write was that we lived in poverty. While I was learning the alphabet, I received free breakfast, part of America’s social welfare program for the poor. Now, families like mine are being called “privileged” and “white adjacent” just because our children have achieved academic success, like I did.
The board members never called on me in that meeting. Instead of sharing my story, I listened to Collins — whose tweet calling Asian families “house n****r” had just emerged — discussing her efforts to change admissions to Lowell High School.
Other parents watched in shock, too. Siva Raj, an immigrant from India and father to two sons, wanted something very simple, he told me in an interview: for his sons to be able to return to school. For almost a year, the board had been on a virtue-signalling crusade — scrubbing American icons such as Paul Revere and Abraham Lincoln out of school names — while utterly failing to address the elephant in the room. In cahoots with the powerful union, the California Teachers Association, and a far-Left wing of the Democratic Party, the Berniecrats, the board showed little concern as parents pleaded with them to come up with a plan to reopen schools closed during lockdown.
All children, but especially the most disadvantaged, were suffering terribly under remote learning. Even the uber-liberal mayor of San Francisco wanted schools reopened. But “the school board had a wall of indifference,” Raj told me. And so on Valentine’s Day 2021, he sat in his kitchen with his partner, Autumn Looijen, and cooked up a plan: a recall election.
Looijen readied the papers and that Friday, Raj posted a Priority Mail Express envelope, his hands trembling. At the time, he was only in the US on a work visa (now he is on the pathway to citizenship). Growing up in an apartment above a carton factory in Chennai, where his parents worked, Raj learned to never challenge authority. “This is what gets your throat slit”, he said. But he could see his sons withering under online learning.
Last week, Raj stepped onto a small stage at Manny’s, a community space in San Francisco’s Mission District, and read the results of the recall election. Looking on were leaders of the Chinese American and Indian American communities, as well as other parents. “We had a cross-fertilisation of energy”, Raj told me later: parents of all races, backgrounds and political beliefs had united to oppose the corruption of our educational system.
Even the progressive New York Times declared, “The recall, which galvanized Asian-Americans, was a victory for parents angered by the district’s priorities during the pandemic”. This felt like a turning point: the mainstream media has been all too eager to perpetuate the idea that parents who object to the prioritisation of “anti-racism” over effective education are “Republican strategists”, “right wing activists”, “suburban white moms”, “conservative white parents whipped into a frenzy” and “white supremacists” engaged in “domestic terrorism”. And yet these parents prevailed in San Francisco, arguably America’s bluest city.
And the implications of this victory ricochet across the nation. Prior to the recall election, Allison Collins posted a video of me speaking to my school board, asking why someone in Northern Virginia would care about a school’s dust-up on the West Coast. What was I thinking, “penning” articles about the story in which she was embroiled?
After the results were in, I answered Collins. I am “penning” articles about Lowell High School because it is one battleground of many where Asians have become the illiberal regressives’ scapegoat, punching bag, doormat — pick your metaphor. In the new hierarchy of human value put forward by “anti-racism,” Asians don’t count.
Indeed, Hannah Nikole Jones, the author of the controversial “1619 Project”, once posted a tweet arguing that it was “disingenuous” to say that New York’s specialised high schools have “majority people of color”, because the majority are Asian. In November 2020, North Thurston Public Schools in Washington state — which includes 22 schools and some 16,000 students — lumped Asian and white students together, excluding “Asians” as “Students of Color.”
And, in discriminating against Asians, Lowell mirrors not only my son’s school, but schools across the country. In August 2020, in Loudoun County, Virginia, the mostly-Democratic school board ignored the pleas of Asian families from India by suddenly eliminating the merit-based admissions test to its advanced academic science and technology high school programmes. The same year, Boston’s all-Democratic school board dismissed the protests of Asian parents, who said their children were being targeted in a plan to change admissions to the city’s most advanced schools, imposing postcode quotas and a lottery system. In both cases, just as in San Francisco and northern Virginia, new freshmen classes saw a decrease in the number of Asian students.
For a long while, the parents fighting against these measures were outliers. Many are understandably afraid of cancel culture; some are already marginalised in their communities, because of their race, their fear of challenging authority, immigrant status and the fact they speak English as a second language. But the case of Lowell High School shows what they can do when they find the moral courage to organise. This courage, for many, comes from the high stakes. For many immigrant families, education is a way out of poverty; for others, it is the path to becoming more settled: secure jobs, rewarding careers, a deciding role in America’s future. As one father said online, as parents celebrated at Manny’s, “They touched the third rail for Asians. Never mess with Asians and their education.”

Make Merit Matter.
The people perpetuating this racism, in the name of "antiracism", will pretend to be dumbfounded when an uptick in anti-Asian and antisemitic violence occurs, thanks to their racialized oppressor/oppressed rhetoric.

NAe São Paulo (A-12) leaves for Turkey for dismantling
Diego Alves By Diego Alves 08/04/2022 - 8:13 PM in Brazilian Navy, Military
The Brazilian Navy (MB) said goodbye today to the aircraft carrier NAe São Paulo (A-12), which was deactivated and sold as scrap. São Paulo was a Clemenceau-class aircraft carrier, which was in the service of MB between 2000 and 2014, having been decommissioned in 2020 and its hull auctioned in 2021.
The largest military vessel in the history of Brazil departed from Rio de Janeiro, driven by a Dutch tugboat. The aircraft carrier had been moored in Rio de Janeiro since March last year, when its hull was sold as scrap for R$ 10.5 million (about US$ 2 million) to the Turkish shipyard Sok Denizcilikve Tic, which specializes in ship dismantling.
Rare moment on deck: A-4s (AF-1) of the Brazilian Navy side by side with the Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard of the Argentine Navy.
By the time of its decommissioning, São Paulo had become the oldest aircraft carrier in the world.
Built in France in 1963, it could accommodate a crew of up to 1,300 crew members and transport up to 30 planes and helicopters.
The vessel was bought from the French government for $12 million. After serving between 1963 and 2000 under the name of FS Foch, it was hired in April 2001 to replace the former Minas Gerais Aircraft Carrier, built by the British, which dates back to the early 1940s.
The NAe São Paulo (A-12) remained most of the time moored amid mechanical problems and accidents, including two fires that resulted in deaths.
The ship spent 206 days at sea, sailed 85,334 kilometers and served as the basis for 566 aircraft takeoffs, mainly the AF-1 naval fighter (McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk), according to Navy data.
The São Paulo/Foch Institute tried to transform the ship's hull into a museum, following the model of the USS Intrepid in New York, but the plan was discarded by the Navy.
A-4 jet (AF-1) landing in NAe São Paulo in the already distant past.
NAe São Paulo and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) on June 8, 2004
PA Foch flew over by his group of Super Étendard fighter-bombers.
The Brazilian Navy has not had an aircraft carrier since the withdrawal from São Paulo, being in 2018 the Multipurpose Aerodrome Ship A140 - "Atlantic" incorporated as the main "ship" of the Brazilian squadron.

an incomplete list of the Bullshit ive gone through this year (2021 only), for personal edification:
I am in grad school trying to do research as well as TA a lab class during a global pandemic
My car is broken into in late February outside of my apartment. $1700+ of my backpacking/camping gear and personal items were stolen from it. Ironically they did not find the $20 cash I had.
Car battery begins mysterious dying if left overnight and have to call for rescue from AAA 4 separate times over the course of March. I suspect it is related to being broken into but can’t prove it without a mechanic’s diagnostics.
First mechanic I bring my car to does nothing for the entire MONTH they have it, except break my air conditioning of all things. I live in a desert. It is now 90º every day. At one point they call me to say they can’t get the back doors to open. I walk 2 miles back to them from campus and demonstrate how the automatic doors work on a 2005 minivan. I begin to have regrets about my mechanic choice but the sunk fallacy cost keeps me there for several weeks.
Mid march I also wake up one day to severe jaw pain/a weird “loose” feeling, like my mouth is slanting sideways. It is midterms and I do not have time for this, so I take a lot of ibuprofen and eat soup for a week. After 3 days I shove pillows and blankets around my face one night to keep my jaw aligned and when I wake up the next morning it is severely tight instead of loose, and I have to carefully stretch it open whenever I leave my mouth closed for more than an hour. I guess I just have TMJ now.
At this point I am walking everywhere until bike supplies arrive to fix my flat tire since the bike store is too far away to walk to; including walking back and forth to campus since I can only bring 2-4 out of 8 students into the lab spaces at a time and so effectively have to run each weekly lab 2-4 times per week; as well as going back and forth for greenhouse experiment monitoring/helping undergrads on our NASA contest project
Early April I go to the dentist for a crown on one of my back molars, which I must pay for out of pocket because my new dental insurance purchased when I moved last September has a 1-year waiting period and so will not cover it ($1200). Stretching my jaw open so far for the procedure reignites my new TMJ back to high pain levels.
While still waiting on car in mid-April I have a severe averse reaction to the second dose of the Covid19 vaccine, resulting in painful ulceration of all the soft tissues in my body (mouth, stomach, genitals). It is a very bad time for 3 days and I book an urgent care appointment for the first time ever.
Urgent Care nurse-practitioner does not believe me when I describe what’s happening, and misdiagnoses me with herpes.
I am still biking everywhere but now I’m extra mad and in pain about it so take car back from mechanic so I can get groceries etc. I make an appointment with the dealership but it will be a week until they can take it. In the meanwhile I have to drive it every 8 hours so it won’t die which means getting up at 2am to drive it for 20 minutes in the middle of the night so it will still turn on in the morning.
I have a terrible reaction to the numbing cream given to me for the painful open sores over my body, because of a lifelong mint sensitivity, resulting in an even greater amount of pain
The dealership can fix my car over the following week but its $1800 and now insurance isn’t sure they want to cover it after all
Herpes test comes back negative and nurse apologizes profusely and recommends a non-mint OTC numbing cream alternative that works (yay) and a numbing spray that does not work because it turned out to use an alcohol based propellant which should not be combined with open wounds esp on the genitals (ouch ouch ouch). I try to tell the nurse why I was right about my diagnosis and she was wrong but she still believes it was a latent virus of some other variety and and not an immune response alone, despite the published case studies I have brought to back me up. I decide I have bigger hills I need to die on right now and stop arguing. Sores persist into May but eventually do go down and numbing cream keeps me moderately functioning.
Car is fixed and I can drive again but it takes 2 hours of crying on the phone to my insurance company for them to agree to cover the cost of repair
I make a primary care appointment for the first time in years so I can have a doctor in this state if something like this happens to me again, in June I do intake/bloodwork/set up appointments to check out some other issues ive been having
Grad school finals happen which i wont get into but Yeah. Finals stress triggers another outbreak of canker sores, but mostly clustered in my mouth and only 2 on my vulva rather than 8-12. I eat only soup for another week.
I get a referral to the local mental health clinic and call about setting up an appointment for an ADHD evaluation. They tell me to download and send in some paperwork and they will call when they have available appointments
I am supposed to be doing all my labwork over the summer but the committee member I need escapes my clutches and we don’t manage to set up a meeting to plan it out/for him to explain the protocols until late June
Bloodwork shows I am critically low in vitamin b12 and low in D, which may explain some of why I am so tired all the time
Ultrasound shows a 1.8cm mass in the adnexa near my left ovary. There are several options for what it can be (folicular cyst, other kind of cyst, tumor, ectopic pregnancy i nearly laugh at my Dr and reassure her the last one is not possible if nothing else). It may go away on its own or it may not. Follow up scan in 2 months
I remember I was supposed to email forms to the mental health clinic and finally send those in mid July. It seems cruel to make me be the one to remember this considering I am calling about a formal ADHD diagnosis.
I also finally pin everyone relating to my labwork down and have a follow up meeting + make a list of what we need to order, but the staff who place orders are on vacation and when they get back several reagents are backordered
I have my follow-up ultrasound. The tech takes lots of photos which indicates the mass is still present, but I won’t know any details until my next PCP appointment when they send over the analysis to her in mid-August
Beginning of August the reagents I need for the first steps of the process arrive exactly 1 day before I leave town for a wedding and the lab manager is about to leave town for the entire next week
After the wedding, severe thunderstorms and tornados trap me in Chicago for 4 extra days. I spend a lot of time at the airport or on my way between the airport and my parents house. A facebook friend gets video of the funnel clouds which at least gives me something to sadly email my advisor and committee members when I have to join our planning meeting from my gate at O’Hare
I lose my drivers license at the security checkpoint on my last trip through the airport and don’t realize until I am boarding the plane because of course that is happening to me now
On the shuttle from El Paso back to Las Cruces after this ordeal the driver stops and picks up a box labeled HUMAN BLOOD and puts it in the trunk and i am too tired to care anymore
I stay up all night making the world’s most pitiful r graphs for my meeting the next morning and everyone takes pity on me and does not call out how useless they are
I spend the weekend trying to motivate myself to actually go into the lab and start my procedures, and fail to leave my apartment. This reminds me it has now been a month (Aug 15th) since I sent in my paperwork and the mental health clinic has still not called me back about up an appointment
I get overwhelmed with Everything and make this list
So that’s where I’m at at the moment. And this doesn’t even include anything from 2020 thats just been continuous like, y’know, a global pandemic and having a bad breakup of a 4 year relationship and moving to a new city where I know no one for grad school etc. I feel like I’m falling apart/unable to do all the shit I need to right now but you know what? Actually its been a really bad time and maybe falling apart a little is justified ;_;

31st July 2021
90Today, I got my Class 12 results. I scored 87% in my exam. I had a mixed reaction after getting my results. I was not sad and not happy also. Not happy because I was not satisfied %with my marks. My marks are too much as exams were not held this year. Idk I may or may not score more than this 87% in this exam if exams were really been conducted this year as I was not that confident with my prep.
I was dissatisfied also because other students who were not good at 9studies and were bad boys have also scored more than 70%. And comparing to there scores my one as too low.
The main motive of the Board Council was that to pass all the students.
Anyways I'm satisfied with the overall marks as I believe God does everything good.
One more thing I must mention is that I was also angry today on one of my friend and he is Pratham.
You don't believe me jenny He called me up the day before the declaration of results. He washed up my brain and filled it tensions. Rather than being concerned about his marks; he was more concerned for his collegemates who previously belonged to CBSE Board especially me as my score was above 90%. Knowing that I'm facing breathing problem and headache he still washed up brain without giving a damn about my health. Okay I tolerated him that time. To refresh my mind I called up Archita after ending Pratham's call. And see my luck I that dumb ass Pratham was in a call with Archita and she added me and made that call as a conference call between me, her and Pratham. As I don't wanted be a wrong sign in my friendship so hesitatingly I had to attend that conference call with Pratham.
Okay till this time all was okay. I become more angry at Pratham when he didn't at all bothered to call me up after getting his marks (93%) more than me. I was shocked that he didn't call me up at all. The person cried and lamented yesterday what will happen if he score less than 90% and score more than 95%. I was really amazed with this attitude and reaction of Pratham, it was absolutely non-predictable though Dev warned me many times about Pratham's this kind of behavior. Thus, I got to know that he is a selfish person. From next time I must necessarily stay alert.

Rash of mass shootings stirs US fears heading into summer (AP) Two people were killed and at least 30 others wounded in mass shootings overnight in three states, authorities said Saturday, stoking concerns that a spike in U.S. gun violence could continue into summer as coronavirus restrictions ease and more people are free to socialize. The attacks took place late Friday or early Saturday in the Texas capital of Austin, Chicago and Savannah, Georgia. In Austin, authorities said they arrested one of two male suspects and were searching for the other after a shooting early Saturday on a crowded pedestrian-only street packed with bars and restaurants. Fourteen people were wounded, including two critically, in the gunfire, which the city’s interim police chief said is believed to have started as a dispute between two parties. In Chicago, a woman was killed and nine other people were wounded when two men opened fire on a group standing on a sidewalk in the Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side. In the south Georgia city of Savannah, police said one man was killed and seven other people were wounded in a mass shooting Friday evening.
Summer camps return but with fewer campers and counselors (AP) Overnight summer camps will be allowed in all 50 states this season, but COVID-19 rules and a pandemic labor crunch mean that many fewer young campers will attend, and those who do will have to observe coronavirus precautions for the second consecutive year. “Camp might look a little different, but camp is going to look a lot better in 2021 than it did in 2020, when it didn’t happen,” said Matt Norman of Atlanta, who is getting ready to send his 12-year-old daughter to camp. Even though most camps will be open, reduced capacity necessitated by COVID-19 restrictions and the labor shortage will keep numbers well below a normal threshold of about 26 million summer campers, said Tom Rosenberg of the American Camp Association.
Mexico says COVID-19 has affected a fourth of its population (Reuters) About a quarter of Mexico’s 126 million people are estimated to have been infected with the coronavirus, the health ministry said on Friday, far more than the country’s confirmed infections. The 2020 National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut) showed that about 31.1 million people have had the virus, the ministry said in a statement, citing Tonatiuh Barrientos, an official at the National Institute of Public Health. According to Barrientos, not all of the people in the survey’s estimate necessarily showed symptoms. The survey was based on interviews with people at 13,910 households between Aug. 17 and Nov. 14 last year, and confirmed preliminary results released in December.
Peru on edge as electoral board reviews result of disputed presidential election (Guardian) Peru was on a knife-edge on Friday as its electoral board reviewed ballots cast in the presidential election, after a challenge to the tally by the losing candidate Keiko Fujimori. The final tally gave the leftist teacher Pedro Castillo a razor-thin 50.17% to 49.83% advantage over his rightwing rival Fujimori, which amounts to about 60,000 votes. However, the country’s electoral authority has yet to confirm the win, and Fujimori, the scion of a controversial political dynasty, has refused to concede. She alleges fraud, even though national and international observers said the vote was clean, and has called for up to 500,000 votes to be nullified or reexamined, forcing the electoral board to conduct a review of ballots.
For Cornwall, G7 summit brings disruption (AP) Towering steel fences, masses of police, protests on the beach: The Cornish seaside’s turquoise waters and white sandy beaches are looking decidedly less idyllic this week as leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies descend for a summit. U.S. President Joe Biden and leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan are arriving for three days of talks starting Friday at the tiny village of Carbis Bay, near St. Ives in Cornwall. The region is a popular holiday destination in the southwestern tip of England. Locals may be used to crowds and traffic jams during the peak summer tourist season, but the disruptions caused by the summit are on another level. A naval frigate dominates the coastline, armed soldiers guard the main sites and some 5,000 extra police officers have been deployed to the area. Authorities have even hired a cruise ship with a capacity of 3,000, moored offshore, to accommodate some of the extra officers. A main road is closed for the whole week, and local train lines and bus services have been shut down. A 3-meter (10-foot) tall metal fence nicknamed the “ring of steel” has been erected around Treganna Castle in Carbis Bay, where world leaders will stay. Security is also tight in the nearby town of Falmouth, the main base for international media covering the summit.
World leaders are in England, but beautiful British beaches have stolen the show (Washington Post) When President Biden shared a photo to Twitter on Thursday of him standing alongside British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and gazing out onto an unspoiled, sandy white beach from the Group of Seven summit in Cornwall, England, the post was supposed to be a tribute to the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States. But to many, it was the image of the picturesque coast that stood out. It looked somewhat suspicious. Too good to be true. Others questioned the authenticity of the scene, wondering whether it was photoshopped. Although it is true that some of Britain’s beaches have a reputation for pebbles, angry seagulls that steal food from unsuspecting tourists and diapers that float in murky waters, the county of Cornwall boasts some of the country’s best seaside destinations—complete with calm, clear waters that are perfect for swimming in and long stretches of soft sand that attract families from around the world. Carbis Bay is one of several beaches that make up St. Ives Bay, which, according to the Cornwall tourist board, is considered by the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World” organization to be one of the world’s best. The bay is described as being “surrounded by sub-tropical plants and lapped by turquoise waters.”
Ransomware’s suspected Russian roots point to a long detente between the Kremlin and hackers (Washington Post) The ransomware hackers suspected of targeting Colonial Pipeline and other businesses around the world have a strict set of rules. First and foremost: Don’t target Russia or friendly states. It’s even hard-wired into the malware, including coding to prevent hacks on Moscow’s ally Syria, according to cybersecurity experts who have analyzed the malware’s digital fingerprints. They say the reasons appear clear. “In the West you say, ‘Don’t . . . where you eat,’ ” said Dmitry Smilyanets, a former Russia-based hacker who is now an intelligence analyst at Recorded Future, a cybersecurity company with offices in Washington and other cities around the world. “It’s a red line.” Targeting Russia could mean a knock on the door from state security agents, he said. But attacking Western enterprises is unlikely to trigger a crackdown. The relationship between the Russian government and ransomware criminals allegedly operating from within the country is expected to be a point of tension between President Biden and Russia’s Vladimir Putin at their planned summit in Geneva on Wednesday. The United States has accused Russia of acting as a haven for hackers by tolerating their activities—as long as they are directed outside the country.
Pandemic relapse spells trouble for India’s middle class (AP) India’s economy was on the cusp of recovery from the first pandemic shock when a new wave of infections swept the country, infecting millions, killing hundreds of thousands and forcing many people to stay home. Cases are now tapering off, but prospects for many Indians are drastically worse as salaried jobs vanish, incomes shrink and inequality is rising. Decades of progress in alleviating poverty are imperiled, experts say, and getting growth back on track hinges on the fate of the country’s sprawling middle class. It’s a powerful and diverse group ranging from salaried employees to small business owners: many millions of people struggling to hold onto their hard-earned gains. The outbreak of the pandemic triggered the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s and as it gradually ebbs, many economies are bouncing back. India’s economy contracted 7.3% in the fiscal year that ended in March, worsening from a slump that slashed growth to 4% from 8% in the two years before the pandemic hit. Economists fear there will be no rebound similar to the ones seen in the U.S. and other major economies.
‘Xi Jinping is my spiritual leader’: China’s education drive in Tibet (Reuters) Under clear blue skies, rugged peaks and the spectacular Potala Palace, one image is ubiquitous in Tibet’s capital city Lhasa: portraits of Chinese President Xi Jinping and fellow leaders. China is broadening a political education campaign as it celebrates the 70th anniversary of its control over Tibet. Civilians and religious figures who the government arranged to be interviewed on the five-day trip pledged loyalty to the Communist Party and Xi. Asked who his spiritual leader was, a monk at Lhasa’s historic Jokhang temple named Xi. “I’m not drunk ... I speak freely to you,” said the monk named Lhakpa, speaking from a courtyard overlooked by security cameras and government observers. “The posters [of Xi] coincide with a massive political education programme which is called ‘feeling gratitude to the party’ education,” said Robert Barnett, a Tibetan studies veteran scholar at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
Long overlooked, Israel’s Arab citizens are increasingly asserting their Palestinian identity (Washington Post) Growing up in an Arab village in northern Israel in the 1990s, Mahmoud Abo Arisheh was sure of at least two things: He was Israeli, and he was not allowed to talk politics. “Be careful, or the Shin Bet will get you,” his parents told him, referring to Israel’s domestic security service. Decades later, much has changed: Abo Arisheh is a lawyer, a poet and a theater director in Jaffa. He attends protests and talks politics freely—in Arabic, Hebrew and English. And while his citizenship may remain Israeli, the identity most dear to him is that of a Palestinian. “I didn’t know anything about being Palestinian,” said the 32-year-old, “but then I opened my eyes.” And now, it seems, so are many others. In just the past month, Palestinian citizens of Israel—also known as Israeli Arabs—have risen up in mass, nationwide demonstrations to protest Israeli evictions and police raids. They have been arrested by the hundreds following some of the worst communal violence between Arabs and Jews in Israel’s post-independence history. For a community that is often overlooked despite numbering nearly 2 million people—or about 20 percent of the Israeli population—these are momentous days indeed.
Nigerian police fire tear gas to break up protests over rising insecurity (Reuters) Police fired tear gas and detained several demonstrators in the Nigerian cities of Lagos and Abuja on Saturday during protests over the country’s worsening security situation, Reuters witnesses said. Anger over mass kidnappings-for-ransom, a decade-long Islamist insurgency and a crackdown on protesters in Lagos last October has fueled demands for the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to do more to tackle violence and insecurity. Reuters witnesses in Lagos and Abuja saw police shooting their guns into the air and firing tear gas into the crowds to disperse the demonstrators, who held placards and chanted “Buhari must go”. Officers were also seen smashing mobile phones confiscated from protesters, who also denounced the country’s 33.3% unemployment rate.
