Okay so I know I shouldn't be working on the new fic BUT here's a snippet I allowed myself to write for it as a reward for getting ahead in TMITDE. What do y'all think?

Alastor, to his great surprise, liked New Orleans. The humidity, the people, the history; there was so much going on all the time. He’d even found a nice little jazz club barely a twenty minute walk from his apartment, five minutes if he felt like driving. The best part, however, was the proximity to Jean Lafitte National Park and Historic Preserve; his apartment was less than a half an hour drive away.

He’d been looking forward to visiting since he’d moved and began planning the newest season of his podcast. This year he would be focusing on New Orleans’ most prolific serial killer, with at least 30 confirmed kills and several dozen more suspected victims. Alastor had been wanting to cover this case since he started his podcast four years ago, but wanted to have a sizable following first. He wanted to give it the attention it deserved.

Alastor was drawn to the Butcher of the Bayou not least because they shared a name but because they even looked alike. He didn’t approve of the man��s pastime of course, but every kid was drawn to a look-alike celebrity, and who didn’t go through a macabre phase?

His macabre fascination just turned into his career… not unlike the man he was here to research.

Now, nearly a month after he’d moved in, Alastor could finally make the trip out to the bayou to see for himself where Alastor Hartfelt disposed of his victims - and ultimately met his own gruesome end.

Alastor forced himself to take his time. He wandered through the preserve’s visitor’s center, read all the little plaques. Only when he’d seen everything there did he allow himself to meander down the nature walk. He’d thought about joining one of the guided tours, but he wanted to savor the visit, enjoy the bayou and the history he knew on his own. His own little ritual. There was plenty of time for him to come back, and he would; his first episode of the new season wasn’t set to release for another six weeks.

He first spotted him right as the pathway turned into boardwalk.

Alastor’s heart skipped a beat before he really even realized why. The man looked like an angel with the way the sunlight hit his platinum hair through the trees, lighting up like a halo. He looked so familiar, yet Alastor was certain he’d never seen the man in his life. He would have remembered someone so beautiful, so… ethereal. It was the only word that even began to describe him.

Quickly looking away before he could get caught staring, Alastor busied himself fiddling with his phone. He snapped a few pictures of the trees, and when he turned to look again the man was gone.

He spotted him again further down the boardwalk, standing and simply staring out into the bayou. Alastor couldn’t see anybody else around and was overwhelmed by the urge to speak to the beautiful stranger. But why? How? He needed an interesting starter; not a cheesy pickup line, Alastor wasn’t any good at those anyway.

Something interesting. The whole reason he was here. That was interesting. His 1.2 million listeners certainly thought so.

Alastor casually sidled up beside the other man - good god he was short! - and said, “Did you know a serial killer disposed of bodies here?”

I'm also kind of in the mood to talk about some AUs now that I think about it...so if anyone was curious about any of the AUs I've got, now's the time to poke me about 'em lmao.

Obviously there's Call of Honor, but I'll put short summaries of my other AUs under the cut:

COD AUs:

Venator: Cyberpunk fantasy AU set in the future in which Soap is a human priest, Price is a vampire...cop? kind of? (he's not really Police but he's the closest thing vampires/werewolves/other "fantasy creatures" have to social work and law enforcement), and Makarov is the Russian vampire equivalent of a mafia boss.

Apoptosis: Price is a Detective Sergeant investigating a series of murders in London, getting tangled up with Soap (a key witness) along the way. Spoiler alert: Makarov's the serial killer.

Oasisverse*: Bighuge fantasy AU that I and one of my partners share. Not a whole lot of solid lore and no big fic planned, but I've got a Lot of lore on Makarov in this AU and some bits of lore for Soap, Price, and Yuri.

Untitled Incubus AU: In which Soap and Makarov are both incubi. This AU isn't Entirely smut but obviously this is gonna be sex-heavy so heads up if you're not into that/you're a minor. The AU itself is untitled, but the two fics I'm planning for it are called Midnight Kiss (Soap/Price) and As You Wish (Makayuri).

Untitled Fashion Designer AU: In which Soap and Makarov make clothes basically.

*Oasisverse isn't strictly a COD AU—it's largely an OC playground for myself and my partner—but we do insert our favorite characters in the 'verse too, which is why I count it among one of my AUs!

Dishonored AUs:

Immram: Iron age fantasy AU in which Havelock (who's the Dishonored equivalent of a Norse whaler) goes on what's essentially an odyssey to find a lost artifact his village depends on. Feat. my oc Moira who's a Morleyan selkie.

Lorelei AU: Pirate AU in which Havelock starts a pirate fleet after being booted from the Navy, Corvo escapes from Coldridge on his own (with the Outsider's Mark), and the two of them team up and Fuck Shit Up. Very much High Chaos.

Also! I know already mentioned Call of Honor, BUT I figured I'd mention: I'm planning a couple of spinoff fics!

The first, with the working title The Way of Death, will follow Makarov's POV through the events of the entire saga (which is gonna be real fun, since he'll be AWOL for a large portion of Interim, and in TWOD we'll see exactly what he was up to :3c)

The second is a lighthearted...slice of life...coffee shop...fluff...romance AU in which everyone is reincarnated many years into the future and they all get to live completely normal lives. Working title is Operation Coffee Bean!

I'm also chewing on a High Chaos version of COH, which I'm considering making its own (shorter) spinoff once I've gotten through most of my other COH-related WIPs.

After his brother had a fight with his best friend, Huaisang builds him a blanket form to help cheer him up):  It looked like it had been a bright, beautiful day – at least, that’s what was promised by the golden sunlight that crept around the edges of the curtains on his bedroom window.

Wow, I hadn’t actually realised how much I wrote in this past year. These are all from the last 12 months.

Patterns. Hmmm. I tend to start in media res a lot, I suppose. And often name the POV character in the first line.

Favourite line out of all of these, that’s a hard one. I do like It's a lovely day in the tomb, and Yóu is a horrible shibie, because it’s just such a perfect summary of the entire fic, as well as riffing off a game I really enjoyed playing (and which formed some of the inspiration for the fic, too). And Not for the first time that day, Lan Xichen looked around the utter disaster area that was his living room and wondered just what the hell he was doing is a line that resonates with me on a regular basis, because, like, mood, Xichen. Mood.

Que shenanigans as they all try and use their abilities to solve the crimes while trying to hide what they’re doing from each other. e.g. werewolf tracking a suspect by scent being followed by the kelpie and having to then claim that some random fallen over bin is a sure sign that the bad guy passed by *sniff* 8.35 minutes ago.

WIP update!

send help I have too many wips going. BUT I did a solid amount of writing last week, so I have new snippets of fic for several of these fics!

I’m trying a new thing where instead of focusing on one fic at a time, I try to write a little bit on each for half an hour at a time and rotate through them. It seems to be working so far!  (thanks Taika Waititi for that tip). I’ve also had a couple of very busy and tiring days last week though where I didn’t write at all. Hopefully it will be a little bit less busy this week, so maybe I can get more writing done. We’ll see!

1. (untitled) - ofmd x black sails Captain Flint/Thomas Hamilton, Ed/Stede, post-series for black sails, tie-in with s1 and post-s1 for OFMD

Currently at about 1.5K and partially outlined.

John Silver is in the middle of yet another long discussion with Flint, Eleanor and Vane, when the whole bar suddenly goes very quiet. 

“Hear ye, hear ye!” Someone says in a loud voice. 

Eleanor sighs. “What now?” she says as she walks outside. Silver shrugs, and follows her. 

“Please join me in welcoming for his regional debut,” a man is saying through gritted teeth and looking like he wants nothing more than to be shot out of a cannon and land somewhere far, far away from here. “The brigand of Barbados, the cream of the Caribbean, the Gentleman Pirate,” he manages to choke out. 

Silver likes him. 

He’s less sure about the man jumping out from where he was hidden.

2. (untitled) - Seventeen Pirate AU Seungcheol/Jeonghan, very heavily based on OFMD and the treasure island Going Seventeen episodes 

Currently at 800 words (which is more than the 3 words it had last week lmao)

“I think it’s time for a break,” Seungcheol says, trying to look casual and relaxed as he leans against a tree. 

If he was being honest, he would admit that he’s not feeling casual and relaxed at all. It might be his age - after all, he’s a whole twenty-six years old already - but all the walking and digging and trying to figure out what the symbols on the map mean has exhausted him. He can tell by Jeonghan’s increasingly pale face he feels the same. 

If he was really being honest, he’d acknowledge that he’s pushing for a break for Jeonghan’s sake. Despite his best efforts, he’s found himself caring for Jeonghan and wanting him to be happy. He’s just…not always sure how to go about that. Jeonghan can be fickle and confusing, and sometimes “things that make Jeonghan happy” and “things Seungcheol can be bullied with” seem to overlap. 

3. (untitled) - Seventeen Coffeeshop AU Seungcheol/Jeonghan, based on a prompt for the WWC crowd ( Person A is an alien, Person B is a vampire, both of them are trying to investigate what humans in 2022 are like, they meet at a cafe)

Currently at 1.2K

Jeonghan turns the rock around so it’s facing the girls. “He’s called Doljjong,” he says, smiling sweetly at them. The girls swoon a little. So does Seungcheol, who is now hoping fervently that he’s doing a much better job at hiding it. Though, judging by the amused look Mingyu shoots at him from across the shop where he’s supposed to be cleaning tables, Seungcheol failed miserably. 

Right. Time to get back to doing boring administrative work. In his office. Where he’s alone and no one can bother him by being too cute or annoying. 

Back in his office, Seungcheol takes a deep breath to try and calm his racing heart. He hasn’t felt like this in a long time. It’s worrying. 

After all, his heart isn’t supposed to be beating at all.

4.  (untitled) - The Untamed Lan Wangji, Sizhui, a fic exploring how LWJ raised Sizhui while dealing with his grief over losing WWX Currently at about 1.5K, will easily go over 5K and I’m estimating it to be in the 10~15K range when it’s done. (I say very enthusiastically as if fics like this don’t run away from me all the time) No updates on this since I’ve been preoccupied with other fics.
