We often get requests for two specific piercings that are dangerous and refuse to offer in our studio. SNAKE EYES: This piercing runs horizontally along the tip of the tongue and binds together two of the major muscles that make up the tongue so they cannot move independently. The jewelry, which spans across the two “holes,” sits on the back of the wearer’s teeth, which can lead to gum erosion, cracking and chipping of teeth, and migration of the piercing that leaves unattractive scars. Even after the jewelry is removed, the “fistula” (the healed chamber of tissue) May permanently bind together these muscles. This piercing is now illegal to perform in Oregon because of the damage it causes. FINGER PIERCINGS/FINGER DERMALS: Surface anchors, also known as “dermals” or “single-point piercings” are a semi-permanent piercing done with a small, foot shaped piece of jewelry pocketed under the skin. These piercings are somewhat fragile, and should not be placed in areas of high movement or where they will be easily snagged, as they can be pulled out. The hand, specifically the finger, is a area of constant movement, and is in and out of pockets, purses, dishwater, etc.... anchors in this area are likely to last only days or weeks, and are very likely to become infected from this activity. Professional piercers care about you and want you to have piercings that will heal safely and successfully without putting you at risk. We care about you, which is why we don’t offer piercings that are unsafe.
