okay but remember them and different beast having similar melodies is actually so insane to me. odysseus reacted to the sirens trying to eat his crew the same way polyphemus reacted to the crew trying to eat his sheep, rendering them the same. however, odysseus becoming the cyclops means more than just becoming a monster: he’s elevated himself beyond his men, honouring them like sacrificial animals or cherished pets. the line between monster and god is thin because of the power imbalance between themselves and humanity. we see this with calypso, who’s not a monster in the traditional sense but behaves inhumanely because she also sees odysseus as a pet. it’s a running theme as odysseus realises he’s not on an equal playing field and therefore cannot play fair if he wants to survive. originally, he tried to play god by sparing the cyclops but was doing so with the arrogance of a man who lacked the authority to take that stance, which is one of the main reasons he pissed off poseidon so much. odysseus had the gall to think he could be man and god at the same time, not realising that being a god also means being a monster
#sorry I’m in my epic: the musical phase at the moment#jorge went wild with these motifs#he was so right for this#I’m eating this up#unrelated but I think six hundred strike would’ve been improved if rather than odysseus suddenly having god powers for no reason#he had started ‘playing god’ correctly thus winning the respect of poseidon#which does kind of happen but I can’t suspend my disbelief that much#maybe if poseidon had let him stab him just to prove a point#or if odysseus had tricked him and then stabbed the shit out of him in some clever way#idk the god powers thing was a bit random#that’s just my unsolicited opinion though !! because I like the man/god/monster themes so much#RAAAAAA 🫶#epic the musical meta#epic the musical#odysseus#polyphemus#ghost speaks
