A lot of more established/big devs use Unreal (or some other 3rd party game engine) or make their own engine; Frostbite (Dead Space, all those sportsball games like FIFA etc), Dragon Engine (newer Yakuza games, Judgement), Decima (Death Stranding, Horizon Zero Dawn) , Divinity (Baldur's Gate 3), Luminous (FF 15), several unnamed internal ones (God of War, Diablo 4), etc.
Unity is the game engine of choice for a lot of mobile games, indie devs and hobbyists (though maybe not for long lmao).
Why do certain groups/devs use Unity? It's free! And because it was free, a lot of people used it, and made tutorials and plug ins for it.
Unreal used to cost money and had a way bigger royalty fee...but Unreal is free now, with a 5% royalty fee only if the game has a gross revenue over 1 million (previously it was 50K, and this was a retroactive change too).
Actually, this Unity mess makes sense when you learn that they've got the guy behind such brilliant ideas as "we should charge players per bullet in fps games" and "all together the Sims 4 expansion packs cost over $800" running the goddamn company.
