So deciding to give Reika a kitsune mask just made me realize how many picrew DONT have that option so that means...I gotta actually draw her at some point....

The only time she becomes really expressive is when it comes to her younger brother and you DO NOT want to do anything that makes him uncomfortable.

November 3 is Reika Enoki’s birthday!

Rarely seen outside without her mask on, she says it keeps the spirits and ghosts from running away the moment they see her eyes (honestly she doesn’t know how it works either just that it does) since she would rather not have to chase down ghosts and spirits when she has to exterminate or interrogate them. Besides dealing with the paranatural she picked up a lot of other skills growing up like tracking, ancient spells and curses, swordsmanship, and Pokemon battling. 

Unlike Merelle and Gui who are absolutely fascinated with all things spooky and supernatural, she prefers only thinking about those things when she has to deal with them. And despite her less than normal skillset, her interests and hobbies tend to be pretty normal. Like “going for walks with her pokemon and gardening” kind of normal.

She’s not the most expressive person around strangers, but does get more expressive when interacting with family and close friends. Can be a bit overprotective over her younger brother (who she wasn’t very fond of when he first joined their family because she was a very territorial 14 year old then).

Her first pokemon is Maru, a ninetales she found near their home when she was 10. Her friends often joke how she sometimes reminds them of a kitsune and her getting a ninetales seemed fitting. Merelle tried to give her a fennekin but Maru is very possessive and wouldnt let the little guy near her. Issei took in the fennekin and named him Shou. 

Ends up as an Elite Four member at some point, specializing in fire-types, to everyone’s confusion.

Reika was basically an exercise in how many kitsune associations i can cram into a character who isn’t one

Her favorite food is agedashi tofu (not aburaage but still a kind of deep fried tofu)

Her later on specializing in fire types is a reference to kitsunebi, literally “fox fire”, which are like will-o’-the-wisps. They’re also called “hitomoshi” and yes she later gets a Litwick->Lampent->Chandelure on her team.

Her birthday, November 3, is on the same day as a festival held at the Hanaoka Fukutoku Inari Shrine in the city of Kudamatsu in the Yamaguchi prefecture. It’s known as the Fox Wedding festival.

Speaking of fox weddings, she was found as a baby a couple months after Morty and Eusine’s wedding, which conspicuously had a brief bit of sunshower and then a vibrant rainbow soon after. In Japan sunshowers are often called kitsune no yomeiri (the fox’s wedding) or other variations. In the Kumamoto prefecture rainbows are what are associated with fox weddings instead.

Though Hoku is sort of a special case in that he neither attracts nor actively seeks out ghosts and/or spirits. He can see ghosts but not spirits, but he doesn’t like it. They don’t particularly mind him though so as long as he doesn’t do much to disturb them they leave him alone.

I have yet to figure out the exact origins of Reika but I do have a vague idea for her design and character. And yes it does involve her wearing masks and suits pretty often
