11:56pm flashes at him when he unlocks his phone. and underneath it, a calendar reminder, even though it's an occasion he would never forget:

suzuko's birthday today

well, today was rough. he was distracted and nearly got himself and the person he's supposed to be guarding in danger, precisely because he was painfully aware what day it is. so he disgracefully turns to smoking, as he is wont to do. he feels his body relaxing after the first drag, and mentally cringes at it. then, when he's burned the cigarette down nearly to the filter, he switches to holding it upright between his index and middle finger.

“happy birthday, suzu,” he mutters, voice quieter than even a whisper, before blowing on the lit end like it's a candle. with a wistful smile, he wonders if she celebrated the day with 'takeru'. he wonders if she even remembered what day it is. if she's even doing well. he hasn't seen her in a long while.

the smile is now long gone. he's about to properly stub out the cigarette when he notices jett approaching.

“—oh, miss thomson. is everything all right?”
