Two major tragedies bring Lee Mirae closer to the edge as she goes through the stages of grief in a more violent manner that would affect not only her relationships with her boyfriend Jeong Yunho and her half-brother Choi San, but also has her becoming closer with the immortal mutant Kang Yeosang. Fueled by rage, grief, and pain, along with a very rude awakening that has Mirae spiraling out of control and questioning everything she holds dear.

Chapter 6

Loud yelps of pain echoed what looked like a ballroom found within the abandoned school that Ten created. Jongin was seated on top of an operating table, his injured leg that had a gaping wound was being tended to by another male, wearing a suit. Dr. Lucas Wong, another telepath that also had extensive medical knowledge. “She tore through your muscle and the tendons, this might take a while to repair, the tissue damage is extreme and even if it did, there will be some discrepancy in the weight distribution when you walk,,” Lucas muttered as he wiped the rest of the antiseptic over the wound. 

“Yeah, she did,” Jongin bit his lip to stifle the groans leaving his mouth in pain. “Even threatened to wipe out my entire family while she did it. She’s got quite a grip.”

“I’m surprised she didn’t do the same to you, hyung,” Lucas glanced at Baekhyun, who had a brace on his neck. 

“Yeah well, I thought she needed to know who was making her suffer. I don’t regret it one bit of course,” Baekhyun frowned, sitting back against the red chintz chair. 

“And now you’ve turned her loose against us when we should be convincing her to join our cause,” Mark said. “You chose to pursue your vendetta over the greater goal that we plan to achieve, and from the looks of this, it seems like Ino has already let it slip that you and Jongin tampered with their Danger Room. We aren’t the enemy, the non-mutants are.” 

Baekhyun fell silent. “To be fair, it was fun helping them out in their plans, it gave me something to do,” Taeyong spoke, his feet up on the table that had Lucas’s medical journals, making the doctor swat his feet away while he dressed the teleporter’s wounds. “I think she also turned Yeosang away from the venture though.” 

“See?” Mark sighed in frustration. “We need her and Yeosang. Yeosang wields significant influence, granted that he practically owns the entirety of Seoul. With Mirae, it’s going to give the venture the added muscle.” 

“You mean she’ll be our enforcer,” Jongin chimed in. 

“In a way. If people have a problem, we can convince her to take care of it. She’s got a lot of skills, skills that must be utilized. She’s let herself go ever since she got rid of the Utopian cult,” Mark explained. 

A portal soon appeared in the middle of the room and Ten stepped out of it. “She’s here. And she’s pissed, and at the same time sad,” He said. He glanced at Baekhyun. “You should’ve kept the ruse going, hothead.” 

“She blew up my house though,” Taeyong pointed out. 

“You’ve got the money, you can build a new one,” Lucas muttered, dressing Jongin’s wound. “Taemin’s still not done from his meetings, is he?” 

“Nope. But I already told him what happened. He should be here in an hour? Two hours tops,” Taeyong replied. “He’s not going to be happy.” 

“Damn right I’m not.” 

Taemin had appeared by the door, looking evidently pissed off. He slammed his jacket down on the nearby desk along with his briefcase. “Didn’t even give me some time to get my stuff before she blew the place up.” 

Lee Taemin was also a telepath like Mark and Taeyong, but his main powers were mostly being able to mimic or augment a mutant’s powers. If Taemin were near an omega-level mutant, he could only mimic but not surpass their abilities completely. Unlike his younger brother Taeyong, who could turn into a diamond form to shield his mind from other telepaths, Taemin’s was naturally present, and he often used it to hide from other psychics. If there were even other psychics apart from them. 

Ten put a finger to his lips. “Shhh. I placed her in one of the rooms of this whole...estate. If I were to go to her now, she would hear everything you are all saying. We wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened in the mansion now would we?” 

“So what’s our next move?” Taemin asked. 

“We call on Ino, ask him regarding what to do about Mirae, and then maybe approach a few willing politicians. I heard not everyone remained arrested after that encounter with Chun Doohwan’s adviser,” Mark explained. “Some are desperate to make a comeback in the political scene. Even after they were exposed.” 

“How are you framing that? I’m not so sure people in this country are keen to forget something like what they did,” Taemin questioned. “Actually, people in this country don’t forget nor do they forgive unless they’re like us.” 

“You could say the same with everyone everywhere, it’s just that we feel it more here,” Taeyong argued. “Then again, it’s not like they know who we are.” 

“Exactly. We should take advantage of the flaws of this society. We’re the superior race, and they will know about their inferiority soon enough,” Mark said. 

It was making Jongin think. “Since that could take some time, I wonder what we plan on doing with Mirae? Are we just keeping her here? Clueless? You forget, you can’t read her mind.” 

“You don’t need to read a mind like hers to know what to do with her, silly,” Ten smirked. “All I can say is that all of you better watch your backs with her. A person who is grieving over the loss of the people closest to her will not think straight, but a person like her who is grieving over losing three people she holds dear? I wouldn’t be surprised if she does turn around and wipe out your entire lineage. She almost did that with you, didn’t she?” He turned to Jongin. 

“How can she do that while she’s over here?” Jongin raised a brow, until he figured out what Ten really meant. “...You wouldn’t.” 

“She’s got every reason to hate each and every one of us now that she knows you were all behind the deaths of her friends. With the shield in her mind, no telepath can control her,” Ten pointed out. “Of course, she doesn’t know my affiliation with the rest of you so she may leave me out of this.” 

“Bring it on, then,” Baekhyun said. 

“Really? You’d really take that risk? I could tell her where your families and loved ones are right now and you can watch them go bye-bye at her hands,” Ten looked satisfied seeing the older male get uncomfortable. 

“I’m already dead to my family, what makes you think I still care?” 

“Enough, Chittaphon,” Taemin rolled his eyes. “We get it. The only one she can’t kill in here is Mark, but even his own life isn’t certain. We need to control her somehow. We’re not the enemy. The non-mutants are.”

“There is a way,” Baekhyun raised a brow. “Choi San and Jeong Yunho. I’ve been thinking of making my next move towards them. Make Mirae really alone.”

“How much longer do we have until we get there? How do we even get there?” San looked over at Junhong. They were still driving down the road that seemed to lead to the city proper with Yeosang’s help. There was a kind of uncertain quality about the city, as if it was part of a certain time yet had modern technology. The people living in the city were wearing different variations of the hanbok, styled in either coordinates or as dresses and suits. 

“It won’t be long,” Yeosang replied from his seat, making all of them look out the windows. “One kilometer more and we’ll be able to find her, or them, or both.” 

“We don’t have much time, unless Yunho can teleport us even at this time, by the time we get to her, she’ll have probably made up her mind,” San said. 

“When I was at those ruins, what I saw gave me chills,” Wooyoung said quietly. “It’s as if all I could feel from that place was rage and sadness. Junhong, both Hyuk and Chanyeol meant so much to her, didn’t they?” 

“Oh yeah they do. If they survived the explosion, you can imagine we’d get things done faster,” Junhong glanced over at them. 

Yeosang sighed. “Oh well, here goes nothing,” He closed his eyes and muttered a few words, making others look over at him. 

A flock of seagulls was flying out of the way of the van, making all of them whip around to look out the window. Their surroundings changed. They were no longer in the city proper, but they were at a dreary-looking street and at the end of the street was the gates of the school. “...Yunho?” Hongjoong glanced at the taller. 

“It’s not me,” Yunho looked just as surprised. 

Yeosang shook his head. “Well that spell was rusty,” He muttered. 

“Spell? What do you mean by spell?...You can do magic?” Mingi stared at him. 

“It’s a gift I try not to use very often. It takes the fun out of everything,” Yeosang casually replied. “I must confess I fear I might be losing my touch with it.” 

San grabbed him by the collar. “You mean to say you could’ve brought us there without having to travel?!” He couldn’t help but yell. 

“In my defense I didn’t do that when I came to the rest of you,” Yeosang yanked his hand off his collar and straightened himself up. 

“You better figure out which side you’re on because it seems to me that you’re buying them some time,” Hongjoong shot at him. 

“Give me a reason not to kill you right now,” Yunho suddenly looked over at him. “You could’ve saved us the time.” 

“Whenever I use magic, I will need to feed. It uses up my energy and turns me into a ghostly hag,” Yeosang held up his hand, his skin becoming translucent, revealing the veins that were becoming more and more visible.

“You are an old hag,” San pointed out. 

“Regardless, the more I use, the hungrier I will get. I don’t think any of you would be willing to give your lives to me, and thus control is needed. It’s one of the downsides of my abilities. That and, I tend to absorb the memories of those I kill,” Yeosang said quietly. 

“In that case, you’ve now got a reason to feed,” Hongjoong said as Junhong pulled the brakes. 

“All of you have your weapons, I can stay behind and wait. There are communicators with you, so you should be able to talk to me and each other in case you split up,” Junhong turned to them. “Good luck. Get Mirae back.” 

“We will,” San nodded and the rest of them got down.

The eight of them faced the massive gates of the estate. “Do we climb over or do we break in?” Seonghwa asked, an idea immediately coming to mind. His eyes and fingertips glowed green, the chains locking the gate coming apart, opening the gate in front of them. 

“I’m here to remind you that we’ll be dealing with a few telepaths and teleporters. Be careful,” Yeosang said as they walked inside, a cold gust of wind hitting them. “As much as it pains me to say it, San is our best bet to get to Mirae. I’m sure they already know of his relation to my dear, as much as they already know who Yunho is in her life.” 

“So we need to watch Yunho and San, is that it?” Hongjoong deduced. 

“Precisely,” Yeosang replied, only to duck out of the way when he felt something strike him. It was an axe, Mingi’s axe, and the taller male himself was attempting to strike him. 

“Mingi!” San tried to stop him, but he wasn’t answering and instead tried to strike towards everyone else, making them take out their weapons. Mingi seemed to be in a trance.

“Mingi!” Hongjoong sped around the taller male. “He’s- What’s happened to him?!” He dodged a shuriken that was thrown his way. Wooyoung and San had joined in the fray. 

Yunho dodged his strikes with an axe, only to run out of the way when he saw Jongho charge towards him. “Oh no, Jongho!” He yelled, avoiding the spikes that were protruding from his arms and legs. Jongho was also in a trance. 

Yeosang took out the concealed sword from his walking stick and knocked Jongho out of the way. “They seem to be under a spell- They know we’re here,” He said, realizing the situation. “One of them’s controlling Mingi and Jongho, or should I say two- Mark!” 

A portal opened from one side of the grounds and out stepped Mark himself, followed by Lucas. “I thought as much, Yeosang!” The immortal said. 

“Can’t get your hands dirty?” Yeosang cast a spell only for it to hit Lucas instead as he saw Taemin step out from the same portal and Ten. 

“Why would I need to?” Mark scoffed. 

“We’re not the enemy,” Taemin said, his eyes and fingertips glowing the same green glow as Seonghwa who was already trying to redirect the shurikens and axes that Mingi was throwing while also dodging Jongho’s kicks and punches. He disarmed their weapons, throwing them to the side. 

“Where is Mirae?” San asked. 

“She’s safe, somewhere in there. But I’m sorry to say that you can’t get to her,” Ten replied. “We need her.” 

“And we need her,” Yunho stared at them. “We’re not joining you and your Project Apocalypse and neither should Mirae.” 

“Ah, Yeosang told you. I guessed as much, he’s turning into a literal vampire before our eyes too,” Mark gestured to the immortal, whose skin was becoming even more translucent, his eyes turning icy blue in color. “You might as well show them how you actually look after all of that magic, you know.” 

“Still sore about Julia the Elder choosing me over you after all,” He said. 

“We’re not the enemy as you all seem to believe. Mutants are the inheritors of this earth, we’re all on the same side here,” Lucas reasoned. 

“Oh really? Then why is Mirae being kept?” Hongjoong questioned. “You’ve got her, we want her.” 

“You’ll have to get through us first, then,” Mark said. 

“No problem,” Hongjoong said, before speeding past Lucas and Taemin, knocking them off their feet. 

Mark took out a swiss army knife from his pocket and shook his head. “Care to duel, Yeosang? To the death as it seems,” He said. 

“I’d want to stick around more, no thanks,” Yeosang sent a hex towards him, sending him to the end of the field, almost knocking into the pillar. Wooyoung transformed into his shadow form, slithering across the ground and capturing Ten, nearly getting sucked into the portal he was trying to create. 

Mingi took out his lighter, sending blasts of flames towards  Mark who reappeared, making him fall over, covering his face in pain. “Chanyeol taught me that,” He grinned.

Mirae looked out the window from the room Ten placed her in. She was getting restless. She wanted to know where Baekhyun and Jongin were, and possibly kill them when she found them. The room she was kept in gave off the impression that it was once among the opulently decorated rooms in the school, perhaps a room of a teacher or school head. 

“Mirae.” 

She turned around upon hearing the familiar voice. It was Ino. “So now you’re here.” 

“I am, and I don’t blame you for what you did to me-” 

Her eyes and fingertips glowed and she reached into her pocket for her deck of cards. “What makes you think I’m sorry for what I did to you? You deserved it as much,” She hissed. 

“Baekhyun, Jongin, their entire group has a cause worth fighting for.” 

“And Hyuk and Chanyeol are collateral damage, is that it?” Mirae flung a charged card towards the older male, only for it to explode through him. “Baekhyun killed them, and he killed Jihoon too. And you let it happen.” 

“Their deaths were a price to pay!” Ino tried to reason, dodging all the cards being thrown at him. 

“They never deserved that! And you know it!” Mirae yelled and a shockwave of energy suddenly reverberated around the room, causing cracks in the windows and walls. Ino saw his face had traces of burns caused by the shockwave. “They never deserved to die!” She yelled again, sending another shockwave that made the furniture burn and disintegrate and Ino felt more burns on his skin. 

“You’re becoming stronger, Mirae,” Ino realized as the burns on him were healing. “Remember what Junhong said to you-” 

More shockwaves of energy reverberated around the room, the ceiling and the walls already on the verge of collapsing. “All this time I was living with guilt thinking that I was responsible for it, when it’s you- You let everything happen!” She shouted, another shockwave making everything collapse and fly outwards. 

“It was the price to pay for Project Apocalypse, Mirae!” Ino tried to reason again, even if he knew it was inevitably futile. “There are people willing to die for causes greater than themselves. It’s time mutants had considerable influence in the world, we have a right to live in this world just as much as everyone else does. Out from the shadows, no longer hiding.” 

“What makes you think I was hiding? What makes you think Hyuk and Chanyeol were hiding? Jihoon wasn’t even a mutant yet he was killed!” Mirae threw another card at him followed by another, the second card ricocheting off the column as it exploded, knocking it over. 

Ino looked up and everything that was about to crumble down froze in mid-air. Baekhyun and a limping Jongin appeared, followed by Taeyong. Baekhyun released a beam of light towards her face, making her fall over, covering her eyes. Taeyong transformed into his diamond form and charged towards her, Mirae knocking him over before he could strike. 

“You don’t even bother to see that your friends are out there right now,” Baekhyun tried to blast another beam of light towards her. “San and Yunho, did you really care for them?” He taunted, only to gape when the beam of light hit the staff she had extended, the energy coming from her being redirected towards him and sending him flying towards the other side, Jongin teleporting in time to catch him. 

The whole school burned down into ashes and shockwaves reverberated all throughout the grounds, making everyone in the midst of their fights fall over on the ground from the impact. Taeyong, Jongin and Baekhyun appeared close to the rubble as Mirae emerged from the ashes. Ino had also reappeared, the burns on his hands and face healing. 

Yunho got up upon seeing Mirae and he ran up to her. “Mirae! Mirae!” He called out, only to get pushed inside a portal. 

“Yunho?” The glow in her eyes faded. “Yunho!” She called out, running towards the portal only for it to close, making her stumble and fall over. Mirae looked over, her eyes scanning the ground for San and getting back on her feet. “San!” She called out. 

“Mirae!” San got back up on his feet only to get pushed inside another portal that closed before Seonghwa could keep him out. 

“San! San!” She yelled, staring at the spot where San disappeared. Mirae glanced at Ten, who was still within the grip of Wooyoung’s shadow form. “Wooyoung, get out of the way,” She said, her eyes glowing red. 

“Project Apocalypse must go online without any interruptions,” Ino said. 

“Wooyoung,” Mirae looked over at the shadow form still wrapped around the male. “Get out of the way.” 

The shadow seemed to slither away from Ten, transforming back into Wooyoung as Mirae’s staff began to glow the same red glow from her eyes and fingertips. “If you kill me, you won’t know where Yunho and San are,” Ten pointed out. “If you join us, Project Apocalypse, you will have them back, unharmed, not possessed or crazy that’s for sure. If you refuse, let’s just say you will have lost two more people you care so much about. In such a short span of time too.” 

“Don’t join them, Mirae,” Hongjoong called out. “Yunho and San wouldn’t want you to join them either.” 

“There’s nothing but pain for you if you join them,” Wooyoung chimed in. “It’s not going to end. It’ll only get worse.”

“If you can’t command, you must obey,” Baekhyun said quietly. 

The words made Mirae look over at him and she struck her staff into the ground leading up to where he was standing, the shockwave sending the rest of them flying back in different directions. “How dare you control me,” Mirae muttered, the glow in her eyes becoming brighter than ever. 

“Mirae don’t join them!” Seonghwa called out, the green glow in his eyes and fingertips. 

She ran up to Baekhyun and before he could get away, she struck her staff in the ground again, the impact making him stumble and fall. Mirae grabbed him by the collar. “Could you really kill me, Lee Mirae?” He said. “One of the last in our group, the sentimental value of it all is enticing isn’t it? You don’t have it in you to kill me. You keep searching for a face to blame for all your grievances, when that face is staring right back at you in the mirror.” 

Baekhyun’s satisfied expression soon turned into horror when Mirae’s eyes turned black. “You really are a monster,” He said, before disappearing. 

Mirae looked back at the group where a portal had opened. “Ino.” 

“Baekhyun is part of Project Apocalypse. It is about to go online in a matter of hours,” Ino explained. “Make your choice, Mirae. If you want to see Yunho and San again, if you want to find them unharmed, you will make the right choice.” 

Mark, Taemin, Lucas, and Taeyong had entered the portal. Mirae closed her eyes. She could hear Yunho calling out to her. Somehow, she had relayed what was happening to Yunho, who was now also aware of what was going on.

For you, I’ll almost do anything

Flannel’s father: 

He was the leader, he was powerful, strong and very good when It came to handling situations. To many, he’s often seemed pretty quiet, looked scary when in reality he really wasn’t as scary as people thought of him as. Of course, If you piss him off then yeah he’ll probably break your neck but otherwise, he cared deeply for his home, pack, and his family.

So If he cared so much then why does Flannel felt like he didn’t? To those who do read my backstory for Flannel, It seemed like Flannel’s father was nothing more than a dick to his own son and prefer the other two more than him. But really, he was always trying his best to make sure Flannel was safe and sound. He was born almost deaf and blind as a cub, thankfully he didn’t and was a late bloomer. But he did grow to be much slower than most wolf cubs and was sickly for a few years.

All he ever wanted was to make sure his son was all right If Flannel’s father was that much of an asshole. I would have written him as such and made him drop Flannel, killing him cause that what most animals do in situations like those but I didn’t. Cause I never saw him as this type, of course, this is my view of him but when It comes down to Flannel as a whole…

He isn’t sure how he should feel about his father, he doesn’t love him but he also doesn’t hate him. Flannel will always call him his father, cause he feels like he gotta call him that cause it respectful but his father is a touchy subject for him. The moment somebody close to him tries to ask about Flannel’s father, It’ll result in him feeling the need to explain everything when he shouldn’t. Which depending on a person they will either brush it off or pity him. He never wants people to pity him, he hates it so much cause It gives him a reminder of how much his father was pitying him (Of course, he wasn’t but this is what flannel thinks.) 

One of Flannel’s fear is that he doesn’t want to ever be seen as weak, scared, useless, everything that is the opposite of what he is now. This was something I couldn’t understand much of why as I didn’t have much of reason to expression it ( until a certain au we have that I finally was able to get a taste of that. ) Which brings up about Flannel is scared he’ll be a worse father If he were to ever have kids, he not against them as he loves them but there is a small bit of fear that his own children would despise him or his children would end up like how he was being very weak and not knowing how to handle it aside from trying to keep them ‘safe.’

Father’s mother: 

He adores his mother, she was always there with him. Taking care of him, making sure that he isn’t alone and has somebody to be around with. Unlike his father If somebody were to ask him about his mother, he would have little problem talking about her. She kept to herself mostly, not one to speak up about things unless needing and usually prefer to keep quiet and not cause trouble. Cause of this she did mostly spend time being in the comfort of their little home (that being the cave) and taking care of things she believed a mother should do.

Most of Flannel’s memories with her was either playing with her or when Flannel started to train himself to become stronger only to get hurt and his mother scolding him. When he started to become older he did become a bit distant towards her, nothing bad that caused this. It sort of happened, but even then he did try his best to spend as much time with her as possible. Since she did remain home by herself most of the time, only ever coming out whenever It was time for eating the pack did eat together like It was some family.

So when It came down to her being depressed and leaving due to the loss of her mate, Flannel did felt guilt over it. He knew his mother wasn’t acting normal, and while he understands people need time to grieve. He did felt like It was his fault for not spending as much time with her, and not leaving her alone cause he feels like If he did that maybe she would have stayed instead rather than just up and leaving without a trance. Flannel could have easily tracked her down with using his nose but It was difficult since her mother did know well enough how to hide her scrent, she was a pretty smart woman which probably what made his parents fall in love with each other but nevertheless he held nothing against her in the end.

Denim: 

Flannel’s older brother! He… He doesn’t think about him so much, he didn’t spend much time with him as a child since Denim kept himself away from Flannel mostly. The only time he ever spoke with him or was even around him was either from eating or If Flannel was going someplace alone than he had to come along with him to make sure he was safe ( this only happened when Flannel was much younger so way before the training happened. ) Denim is… Very serious and follows the old culture that they have, meaning he isn’t a fan of half-breeds whatsoever let along a Garou dating somebody that isn’t a Garou too.

Denim was a bit colder towards almost anybody, even to his own parents. The reason for it was cause he was given the mindset that If he became the leader, He had to act this way. Of course, there is a line where you have to be serious or else you could easily be killed. It even a thing real life wolves deal with a lot, If you want to keep your leadership role you better be serious about it and not think it some sort of silly game. From hearing that It sounds like he wouldn’t be the type to give away the leadership role to anybody, but since the role can be given to anybody that is strong enough. Flannel was easily able to get it under one condition.

Doesn’t act like a leader and Flannel will be killed.

Flannel’s relationship with Denim is just… There. We’re siblings and there’s nothing more and nothing less. Flannel doesn’t get to say a lot about Denim aside from wanting to keep any of his mates that isn’t a Garou away from him since  Denim will have a little problem questioning them. Heck, he would probably try to find some sort of way to make sure Flannel doesn’t end up with them or make the mate regret ever coming to mount Garou, to begin with.

In short, If Denim is going to keep his direction away from anybody, even his own family than Flannel will do the same to him as well.

Chintz: 

The middle brother of the family! Unlike Denim, Chintz is definitely the goofball of the family. He loves pulling pranks on people a lot, some actually being pretty… Deadly. He was the one sibling that gets into trouble a lot and honestly probably be the worse leader ever If he was in control. He takes everything almost as a joke, and only be serious If he thinks it actually serious. 

He’s not the greatest person to be with, heck I would suggest not ever being his mate whatsoever. Cause If he going down you are coming down with him too, which happened a lot with Flannel when he was younger. Chintz was the one that played with Flannel most of the time, that doesn’t mean most of their playing was anything good. Sure, there were days that It was all right but there was time Flannel almost got caught by hunters cause of Chintz‘s game or made Flannel lost his life.

This was when they were children and Chintz did found himself.. Calming down a tad bit from it. Again only a bit. The reason for it was mostly many of the scoldings that he would get from their father but otherwise he loves playing games and pranks on people, it feels like It makes the day so much interesting to him no matter what happens. If it catches his interest than he going to love it, so when It comes to Flannel’s feelings towards his brother… Sometimes, he can’t help but questions If this is actually his brother.

Like no offense to Chintz but Flannel has such big mix feelings towards him, If they ain’t playing some sort of game than Flannel can deal it pretty easily, but If  Chintz suggests playing some game than Flannel is leaving so quick before he could even hear what it’s about. 

Flannel would make sure his friends during the war or mate wouldn’t go near him alone, probably warmed them ahead of them about him. The last thing, Flannel would want is to lose his friends or mate thanks to his brother stupid games. Probably make sure any kids he has is away from him whatsoever, despite Chintz knows his limit to not get children into any danger but otherwise… Flannel prefer to avoid him as much, doesn’t hate the poor guy but also doesn’t trust him very much with like… Anything LMFAO.

Velour:

VELOUR!!! HIS DAUGHTER!!! HE’S CUB AND HE’S FOREVER GOING TO LOVE HER

Flannel does NOT hate his daughter! So many people think Flannel dislikes his daughter and wants NOTHING to do with her when this is false! He even said in his game that he tried too often visit her, so he does not hate his daughter!

If anything he does worry about his daughter a lot, beforehand he was pretty worried that his daughter would become sickly like how he was. But she wasn’t so that was one worry out of him, the other being that she would grow to dislike him or worse. So he would try his best to make sure that doesn’t end up happening, which we all should know that wouldn’t since Velour’s character as a whole.

Nevertheless! He really does care a lot about Velour, it is his daughter after all! He gets worried a lot If she’s lonely, making any friends and If she’s taking good care of herself. He does get a bit worried when It comes to her being really clingy to him and the others ( being her mother/father and any siblings that she may have. )

Admittedly Flannel isn’t self-aware that Velour is a bit jealous of their other parent. Since in the Japanese skinship she does state that she can’t help but get a bit jealous over Flannel’s partner ( that being velour’s mother / father ) since they are able to get his attention and everything. But since she also said that she knows she shouldn’t, and it weird for her to be feeling this whatsoever… It really isn’t much of a worry for Flannel even if he did find out unless the whole thing gets worse than yeah, he going to have to sit down and talk with her.

Of course, his only worry is just making sure that she doesn’t cling to him so much cause he isn’t always going to be there for her.

But otherwise, he really does love his daughter? She’s like his everything, and he is glad that she was also interested in the same thing that he’s interested in. The idea they both can share the same interest ( treasure ) always makes him very happy, just like how parents should be. He only hopes that her life will be easy, and good and that she does the best that she can in life! Cause all he really wants is for her to be happy and exceed in life, he wouldn’t even care If she doesn’t even go into a pack as long as It makes her happy than It isn’t a big deal to him so much.

Hi! I'm looking to start making my own clothes, mostly because I recently purchased and then subsequently ruined (bleached) the perfect tunic/ kurti and it's no longer being sold. I want to make a replacement. Do you have any advice for getting started? Where can I find cloth? What measurements do I need to take of myself? How much do I add to the cloth in addition to those measurements to allow for seams? Other advice for a beginner?(And maybe a primer on putting pockets in pants and dresses?)

Alright. I’ll see what I can do to help you. In order of asking:

Where to find cloth: I mostly buy my cloth either at Joann’s fabric or at fabric booths at SCA events. I don’t like buying cloth online unless I have to. I would recommend doing an internet search for fabric stores in your area and checking them out. Of course, you can order fabric online but I don’t recommend it if you’re just getting started.

You don’t need to know as much about fabric if you can touch it when you buy it, because if you know you’re looking for 100% cotton chintz with a chevron pattern you can search for that online. But if you only know that you want something soft, not fuzzy, and green, you’re much better off going through a store and looking at the stock.

What measurements do you need: This depends on what you’re going to be making. Here’s a generic illustration covering most measurements you might need.

You probably won’t need all of these measurements for any one garment. Getting your back measurement is hard to do on your own, so it helps to have someone measure that for you. For a tunic, the important measurements are shoulder to shoulder, bust, waist, hips, arm length, and neck to wherever you want the tunic to stop.

If, heaven forbid, you don’t even have a measuring tape, you can wrap a ribbon or a piece of string around yourself and then measure that with a ruler.

How much cloth do you need: This depends on how much seam allowance you’re going to need. In most cases, I use a rolled seam, so I need about three quarters of an inch more than the actual size of the finished garment.

If the cloth is a type that tends to fray, cut the pieces about half an inch to an inch larger than you normally would, then put in a French seam. Whenever I buy cloth, I tend to buy an extra half a yard to a yard in case something goes wrong with the piecing.

But in general, try laying out a garment with the same amount of fabric on a table, get an idea of how much you’d need to duplicate it, and then add half a yard.

Advice for getting started: Do not be afraid of patterns. It isn’t cheating, it isn’t tracing, it’s using the same resources used by the entire industry from professionals to beginners.

Especially if you want to make trousers. Trousers are some of the hardest garments to make and the easiest garments to become terrifically uncomfortable if made wrong.

As with most creative endeavours, the first few projects are going to be a lot more impressive to yourself before you get used to it. Unlike many other creative endeavours, the first fruits of your labour are more likely to stick around and keep being used long after you start getting good at it.

Also, this applies to most things, but especially sewing: when you make a mistake, pay attention to how you made it. Once I sewed a sleeve into the neckhole twice because I was tired. Now I always pin the sleeves on and then hold up the garment and look at it to make sure I’m not doing anything quite that stupid. And sometimes, I was about to, because no matter how long you’ve been sewing you can do something stupid if you aren’t paying attention.

Basic pocketing:

If you’re making trousers, I really recommend buying a pattern with pockets. if the pockets in the pattern are too small, just make them longer. Sadly, you cannot make the pockets wider than the leg of the trousers because we are not timelords. This tutorial on extending pockets in jeans can easily be applied to making your own pants, just skip the step of making pockets that aren’t large enough in the first place.

But if you’re making a skirt, things get much easier.

Let us say you’ve cut out a basic panel skirt, which is three to six trapezoids attached to a waistband. (the waistband could be a tube covering elastic, or a folded over piece of fabric with a fastening like a hook and eye or a button)

This pattern can be used on any fabric that does not have a pattern with a distinct top and bottom, and is easily adjusted to make it fit pretty much anyone.

Fold your fabric neatly in half (it’s folded badly in the picture just so you can tell it’s folded). 

Fold over the large rectangles cut out at the bottom. These will be your pockets.

The narrow rectangles at the top will become your waistband and can be any width you like. If your waist is smaller around than the fabric is wide, you’ll only need to cut one, but be sure to cut it twice as wide as you want the waistband to be (plus seam allowance) because it’s going to be folded over.

Cut the rest of the fabric into trapezoids as long as you want your skirt to be. Of course, the trapezoids will only form on the fold, and across from them you’ll get two triangles. Sew two of them together, bam. You’ve got another trapezoid. I recommend putting the panels with a seam down the middle on the sides and the big trapezoids you cut in the front and back, this makes it look intentional.

Add the pockets to the sides of the front panel, then attach the rest of the panels to each other. Then you attach the waistband. And finally, the hard part. Put on your skirt, with is more or less finished except for the hem. Stand on a chair and get someone to trim the bottom with the scissors parallel to the ground. The bottom of the skirt is now slightly curved, meaning it will look like it’s a flat line. Now you can hem it.

You can cut a curve onto the bottom of the skirt while not wearing it, of course, but if you do this it will not take into account your hips and bum, and unless you are a perfect cylinder this means that the back of the skirt will be higher than the back of the skirt. So find someone to help you trim the bottom. 

Now here’s the tips that will work with any skirt pattern: To help distribute the weight of the contents of your pockets, attach the top of the pocket to the waistband of your skirt and make the pockets wide enough to be attached to the seams of the skirt. This distributes the weight across the waistband and makes it more comfortable to wear when you’ve stuck a couple loaves of bread, your wallet, your cell phone, and the dead sea scrolls in there.

omg I'm so sorry it took so long to reply! Life's been nuts lately. Lemmie know if you want more specific things but here's some of my favorite textile things I know!

The original punch card jacquard loom is actually the precursor to binary code, which of course is kinda super important for computers. The loom uses the punched space and the filled space on the card to know what threads to pull up, its super cool I recommend looking on youtube for punch card jacquard loom videos to see some of the very few left work. The sound is *chef's kiss* and its always satisfying to seeing a weaving work up.

Fibers is the backbone of human civilization! Before the industrial revolution textiles was THE money maker, and besides farming, the most important thing for pretty much any and all cultures across the world, ever. Textiles were so important that just about all civilizations had some form of sumptuary laws preventing certain people from certain social standings or even outright banning certain types of fabric or prints or dyes from being worn but for a select few. For example, the Inca would ban certain patterns woven on tunics from being worn unless given permission, which it then became a major status symbol. And that fabric was actually used as a currency and was used to pay taxes. And a little more recent, during the 18th century in England, in order to protect the English textile industry, cotton, chintz and calico prints from India were banned, tanking the then overworked textile industry. (also India has this REALLY cool way to dye fabric with natural dyes thats not printed, they paint a mordant onto the fabric in the design they want and the dye adheres to that area only and its just,,, so damn cool)

Not to be a Luddite On Main but the industrial revolution was the worst thing ever, not just because like,,, Capitalism but because its only been in the last maybe 75 years? We've been able to recover handmade textile techniques. handweaving 100 years ago wasn't,,, really a thing. There was no point. So my weaving books on my shelf are really small miracles. And how most of the more complex weaves were rediscovered was through women sitting at a loom and figuring it out, and looking at museum pieces and reverse-engineering it. Those women are far stronger than I could ever be. (also a luddite was a sort of political group of English craftspeople that rejected the revolution because they knew it would be the death of handicrafts and honestly? they were right. We lost so much knowledge to the revolution.)

And Hot Take but sewing machines aren't evil oppressors, actually. I've seen too many feminist talk about how outdated and oppressive sewing machines are and all that jazz and like,,, sewing machines are the only reason women gained more independence. It was faster and easier to sew clothes for their families so they had more down time to be a Suffragette and demand more rights. Also like, as someone who is sewing and tailoring their own wardrobe, tailored close just look and feel and fit better and fast fashion Needs To Die.

In Victorian London, I know of two murders that were solved from knitting! (you can listen about these two cool cases on the podcast Fiber Nation, episode "The Half-Knit Stocking: A True-Crime Tale") One where this woman was murdered, her body half shoved in the fireplace to try and get rid of her, her half knit sock up on the shelf where it shouldn't have been, so she had to have been murdered and not had fallen into the fire. In a time where most murders weren't solved, they figured it out because of an unfinished sock! And the second one was about how this grandmother went missing and they found her killers by a pair of socks that were made by her where they shouldn't have been. Its actually pretty interesting and really sheds light on how many Victorian women were constantly knitting socks, all the time. And as someone who has knit four pairs of socks in the span of like a year and a half,,,, fuck that lmao.

So I’ve been working on this in fits and starts for a while, and am offering this to the void for the inspiration to keep going. Tell me if you think I should XP For @ishipallthings glorious prompt over on the old imzy comm positively aeons ago:  “you’re supposed to be on a blind date with someone but you sat down at the wrong table and i haven’t been able to get a word in edgewise to tell you that and it’s been thirty minutes” au

The café was nothing noteworthy in itself, casual and breezy with a couple of tables set out in the sun, shaded by parasols looming overhead; and some more set up in the interior with mismatched chairs for those who liked to really breathe in the scent of caffeine in the morning.

It reminded Steve of a dollhouse, really – a real-size replica of a model manufactured by the thousands, with its pastel chintz tablecloths and lacquer floorboards. A stock establishment to be found in any tourist-y hotspot, perfectly inoffensive, nothing particularly memorable. And wasn’t that true of nearly every place he’d strayed into in this modern age…chains, people called them, establishments rolled out by rote, based on one formula. No space for variation. Even the creative little ‘quirks’ in design and aesthetic were pre-planned, and duplicated in a hundred other stores of the same ‘brand’ in the country. No space for a personal touch. No pub down the road with a frame of the owner’s prizewinning stallion in pride of place over the mantelpiece, and genial ol’ Mr Garcia bragging about the Triple Crown win of ’29.

But people these days didn’t care too much for that, did they. Maybe Steve wasn’t such a cheap date after all. Even if the café was on the ground floor of Stark Tower.

He’d been lingering on the outskirts of the place for over fifteen minutes now, more than the time it took for him to ‘get ready’ and zoom down the elevator from his apartment combined. JARVIS had told him he’d had a cowlick at the back of his head in said elevator; Steve had licked his palm and flattened it down on reflex. That had been the extent of his vanity – he was in his usual khakis-and-button-down combo, and it was only as he fidgeted with the leaves of the potted geraniums on the café exterior for the umpteenth time that it registered that maybe Natasha wouldn’t be all too pleased with his ‘efforts’.

“Give this one a chance, Steve. An honest chance.”

Contrary to outward appearances, he was…. trying, alright? It was just that Natasha kept tossing the names of people he scarcely even remembered, forget developed an actual interest in, his way and he was too busy reflexively ducking to actually consider any of them with seriousness and this metaphor had escaped from him three phrases back but damn if he was going to give up without a fight.

It was all just too reminiscent of a sly brown-eyed stare, a jostle of the shoulder, “c’mon Rogers, one hour down at the hall, no one’s gonna step on you, I swear Abbie is a really sweet gal−” and even putting aside how well those times had gone, it just left Steve with an indistinct ache in the pit of his stomach and rapid, wet-eyed blinking. He didn’t want to be set up. He didn’t want new people to ‘spice up’ his life. Why was that so hard to grasp?

But chapter five of How to Get Out of Your Mind and Start Living insisted that the support of his current friends and…family, was ‘key’. That people had sources of help all around them, all they needed to do was tap into that concern and care and be helped. And Natasha did care for him, and demonstrated it in a way she so rarely did; Steve would be an ungrateful sod to not appreciate the value of that. So he was going to walk into this café with an open mind and…whatever would happen thereon, would happen.

He pushed open the door without much fanfare for all the lingering he had been doing, fingers leaving smudges on the foggy glass. Autumn was approaching and there was a nip in the air; most of the café’s patrons had a thin cardigans or jackets draped over their chairs, or a scarf winding around pale necks. The contrast between temperatures was palpable; the air inside was warm and toasty (literally so, Steve could separate out the smells of at least three different flavours of bagels crackling as they were heated, fragrances bright and crystalline sharp). Not many of the glossy wooden tables were unoccupied – it was evidently quite the popular haunt and Steve could…get why, despite all his uncharitable thoughts in the beginning.

Chapter Two: The Importance of a Positive Outlook. Always think of the brightest outcome possible before entering a situation. Something out of one of those romantic comedies Bruce liked to put on as background noise, maybe. A bright-eyed girl who taught kindergarten in the day and worked in a puppy shelter by night, who was more or less indifferent to the Avengers, who by some miracle of fate liked Steve…yep, that seemed about right. Five dates on, he’d tearfully propose, she’d joyfully accept, they wouldn’t have sex till the wedding night, and after a brief honeymoon in the Pocono Mountains which she’d of course agree to because she adored his precious little forties foibles like that – they’d retire peacefully in a house with a picket fence. Or you know, move in a matchbox high-rise apartment because Stark would probably evict them due to his moral objection to the institution of marriage, and then they’d get a dog who only got walked up and down the stairs and put their names two years in advance for daycare. Marital bliss, hallelujah.

Steve knuckled the bridge of his nose wearily. Yeah, this ‘imagine the brightest outcome’ thing was going smashingly.

He dropped his fingers, shoving them into the pockets of his khakis with ease (modern jeans with all their rivets were so inconvenient, how on earth was one supposed to fit anything into those tiny pockets?) Scanned through the scattered milieu of people already seated at different tables. Positive outcome, positive outcome. Pretty girl with ‘wife and family’ branded across her forehead like a billboard, yep yep…

Not in the least because Stark’s espresso machines could blow this place out of the water in mere seconds, because Stark prized efficiency as well as quality in his coffees, as he liked to declaim to them at breakfast every now and then.

So yeah. Tony Stark, sitting in a café where Steve was supposed to be meeting his blind date. That was…quite the situation. The only question remained: what was Steve going to do about it?

And that was where Steve had to blink, and shake his head internally – because when had he last made that kind of choice? Everything he dealt with in his day-to-day life these days, he was always…reactionary. The flinch of unease at every new thing he had to accustom himself to, every remnant of something old that made nostalgia jar sharp and painful in his ribcage. He never thought about anything, much anymore. It was all just a roiling wave of emotion that Steve had resigned himself to ride out, except it never really ebbed; just tossed and turned till Steve shook with the weariness of it all. Shook and buckled his shoulders against a storm that never seemed to pass.

But here he stood, caught in indecision, watching black spiking up at the back of a tanned neck, like Stark had kept his head tightly covered by the grey hood of the jacket he was sporting, only to release it in the coffee-scented air of the café and static-fuzzy hair sprung up in response, wild and liberated. No first date efforts taken there, either.

The thought coaxed a mindless smile to his lips, even as Steve waited for the wave to come. That instinctive rush of distaste, unease. Irritation at Nat for the ploy, anything at all. The urge to turn around and leave, the advice of self-help books be damned.

Three days with The Dice Man: I never wrote for money or fame’

His 1971 novel was a countercultural sensation, selling 2m copies. But the author has surrounded himself in mystery. Why?

When I read The Dice Man 15 years ago, I wanted to know who had written it, and why. It read more like an act of survival than a novel, but whether it was the authors survival or mine, I wasnt sure. I had stopped drinking alcohol and I was looking, simply, for another drug. The book made me high; it offered multiple universes, all of them safer than vodka.

The Dice Man is seemingly an autobiography, narrated by a bored, clever New York psychiatrist, Luke Rhinehart. He is a nerd run mad. He decides that, in pursuit of ultimate freedom or nihilism he will make decisions using dice. He offers the dice options, and they choose for him. The dice tell him to rape his neighbour, but he fails because she wants him. The dice make him tell his patients what he thinks of them (my favourite dice decision). It was a perfect novel: a fantasy of escape and, for me, a search for an absent and charismatic father.

The book was published in 1971, an era devoted to psychoanalysis (not the mocking of it), and it was not an instant success. But over the course of 45 years, it has become a famous book, with devoted fans. The Dice Man has sold more than 2m copies in multiple languages and is still in print.

Dicing became a minor craze. Richard Branson said The Dice Man had inspired him, although he used the dice for only 24 hours because it was too dangerous to carry on longer. The entrepreneur Jeremy King opened a series of London restaurants due to a dice decision. In 1999, a Loaded magazine writer, who described Rhinehart as the novelist of the century, took heroin after a dice decision, while his girlfriend performed in a strip club. In 2005, comedian Danny Wallace published a memoir, Yes Man, in which he travelled the world saying yes to everything, again loosely inspired by Rhinehart.

As his notoriety grew, journalists came to interview the Dice Man. But Luke Rhinehart does not exist: he is the pseudonym of a man called George Powers Cockcroft, who shielded his real identity from his readers for many years. There was no Dice Man in these interviews, but there was no one else, either. Cockcroft played his part as an avuncular blank who liked dicing and drinking, a sort of Robert Mitchum pastiche; and of Cockcroft, whom I increasingly found more interesting than Rhinehart, there was almost nothing.

Why write a perfect novel, give all the credit to a ghost, then never write its equal again? I have been emailing Cockcroft since 2002, when, in a frenzy of half-hearted self-destruction, I attempted to dice my way through a Conservative party conference in Brighton. It was for an article, and I sought his advice, which was friendly and encouraging. The choices I gave myself were timid would I order a hamburger or a steak? though I do remember pretending to be Jesus Christ in the restaurant of the Grand hotel. The article was not a success, and was never published. The appeal of the dice is: how much power will you give them? I gave them nothing, and they gave nothing in return.

I have tried to interview Cockcroft before. I even met him once, in a hotel bar in London 10 years ago. He looked large and alien amid the pale chintz of Kensington, wearing a stetson that almost reached the chandelier. Last year, around the publication of his most recent novel, Invasion, which is about a friendly and intelligent alien who comes to Earth and is bewildered by our stupidity, we had a telephone interview in which he claimed, at 84, to be multiple selves, describing himself as we. We he and I were on a conference call with his publicist, and I asked him where The Dice Man had come from. You must realise, he told me softly, his voice a little hoarse, I have always conceived of myself as being multiple having, you know, a dozen different selves, if not a thousand different selves, at any given moment. He sounded croaky and crotchety, and I didnt push him. Instead, I asked if I could come and stay with him in upstate New York.

George Cockcroft, I say for the tape recorder. Yes, he says. Here I am.

We are in a large white house in Canaan. The houses are widely spaced here, on hills around a pond of ice; there are spindly trees on the horizon. The house is warm, comfortable, shabby, with wind chimes on the terrace.

Cockcroft is very tall and lean, his face weather-beaten from years of sailing and working in the garden. It has a kind of luminous joy that is very childlike, unless he is weary. His voice is deep, hoarse and excitable. He is, in some ways, very conventional for a myth: he chops wood, drinks whiskey, eats chocolate biscuits, feeds the fire. When he wants something, he shouts for his wife, Ann. They have been married for 60 years and there is deep love between them. I can feel it all through the house.

Slowly, he tells me the facts of his biography. He is warm, courteous and curious; at one point, when I mention I need money to buy a house, he offers, very seriously, to lend it to me. Sometimes he says he cant remember things. Sometimes he says he doesnt know why he does things. Sometimes he repeats that he has multiple selves, and cant access the one who has the answer to my question. (I begin to think he does this when he feels threatened; if it were habitual, wouldnt he they do it all the time?) Then he will give a sorrowful grin and we retreat: he to his study, to write or to answer emails from fans, I to the sofa to read a novel Ann wrote many years ago. Later, we try again.

Cockcroft grew up 30 miles away, in Albany. His grandfather was the chief justice of the supreme court of Vermont; his great-grandfather was the governor of Vermont; so the creator of The Dice Man was born to New England grandees. I ask about his family. My parents were both college graduates, he says, a curious first observation from a novelist who doesnt care about class. His father Donald was an electrical engineer, his mother Elizabeth went to Wellesley College. She was clever and expected cleverness from her two sons.

As a boy, he was shy and compliant, and began to use the dice at 16. He was a procrastinator: So I would make a list of things to do in a day and the dice would choose which one I did first. Then he began to use the dice to force myself to do things I was too shy to do. If the dice chose it, then somehow that made it possible.

He says he didnt have a single original thought in his adolescence. He went to his fathers school, again showing how little originality I had, and studied electrical engineering, like his father. I cant believe how naturally and easily I was conforming to everything, Cockcroft says. His younger brother James, an expert in South American politics, was a rebel; even today, his website describes him as author, lecturer, revolutionary. But I was a total conformist, he says. I was intellectually dead until I was 20.

He also studied psychology and English literature. He worked nights in a psychiatric hospital, and considered being a lawyer. (I long to meet a dice lawyer.) The dice chose Ann for him. He was driving home from the hospital and saw two nurses. He got out his dice. If it was odd, he told himself, he would offer them a lift. One of them was Ann.

She looked like Rita Hayworth, and he fell in love with her immediately, applying to Columbia University to be close to her in Brooklyn. They married in 1956 and had three sons: Corby, Powers and Christopher, who has paranoid schizophrenia and still lives with them. Cockcroft avoided the draft to Korea because he had varicose veins: I hate to think what would have happened if I had gone into the military, he says. (The dice soldier.) Instead, he taught English literature at a series of colleges in America and beyond.

He says he has no idea why he began writing. He read outsiders, and men who railed against belonging: Tolstoy, Kafka, Hemingway. His first attempt at fiction was about a young boy who is locked up in a psychiatric institution because he thinks he is Jesus Christ. He abandoned it after 80 pages, but one chapter featured a psychiatrist called Dr Luke Rhinehart. He was a minor character, Cockcroft says, but there he was.

The year he began writing The Dice Man, 1965, there was a crisis in the marriage. He and Ann were living in Mexico with James and his family. Ann was pregnant with their youngest son, and developed hepatitis. She was very frightened for herself, for the baby, Cockcroft says. She felt isolated, and felt I was somehow closer to my brother than her. She came back from Mexico very resentful of me, and frightened in a way she had never been before.

He was reading Zen and Sufism, which he describes as attacks on the self. Somehow writing the book and reading these philosophies enabled me to be detached from any bad places I was in, to not be enmeshed in them. He wrote slowly, 50 pages a year for five years. His previous writing had been laboured and self-conscious, but this was different. As soon as I began writing The Dice Man, he says, I felt I had found my natural voice. I didnt think of it that way at the time, but the book is about what makes human beings unhappy and how they can escape.

He admits the writing was psychoanalysis, a way of understanding, and processing, his brief estrangement from Ann. The Dice Man involves some of the things I could do if I could free myself from Ann. But the book went way beyond that. There is, for instance, much adulterous sex.

Lukes wife in the book, Lil, funny, sexy, a good mother, is something like Ann. He admits that the children are based on my own children. But he couldnt go as far as Luke. My dicing has always been very limited, he says. I was wise enough to know that I didnt want to risk my marriage by giving options to things that might ruin the marriage. I never gave an option that would hurt people.

Upstairs, above his and Anns bed, there is a painting of two Georges one good, one bad by Ann. Her paintings fill the house. I wasnt consciously angry, Cockcroft says, of the trouble in their marriage. Sad is closer than angry. I never get very unhappy. Every year that goes by, you realise how unimportant everything is. I dont think Ive asked much of life since I wrote The Dice Man. I was ambitious then. Ive mellowed. Pretty soon Ill be a liquid lying on the ground.

Is Luke your repressed self, I ask. Because, for all his wit, Luke Rhinehart is a raging man, and George Cockcroft is not. But he wont answer the question. Remember, he says, there is no single you. So that is a question I would not answer. Later, he does go further. Luke is the hard, cold version of George, he says, then adds: What I have come to love about the Luke of the novel is his willingness to be a fool, his willingness to laugh at himself.

He shows me an excerpt from his diary, dated 10 June 1969, written in Mallorca: I must finish the Dice Man novel. I know that if I open the novel and begin to read it, I, and it, will live, and my desire to work on it and complete it will bloom again. I am the Dice Man in a way I am no one else. It is the idea which my life has created. I am not good for a second one. I am not a professional writer. I am without talent in any way. But the theory of the dice man, the ironic spirit of his life, grows as naturally in my rocky soil as do boulders here along the rocky coast of Mallorca.

Cockcroft came across the journal three or four months ago and was startled: he doesnt remember feeling that way. Later, in a restaurant by the frozen lake, I ask if the description of Luke that opens the novel is him: I am a large man, with big butchers hands, great oak thighs, rock-jawed head and massive, thick-lens glasses. Im 6ft 4in and weigh close to 230lbs; I look like Clark Kent.

Id have to look at it again, Cockcroft says. Physically, its not me. I made him a much bigger man. Hes overweight.

Luke is overweight? Ann says. I dont remember that.

Thats how I always picture him, he says.

Ann replies: I always picture him like you.

When Cockcroft was a child, there was a calamity. His father developed cancer in his 30s. He decided he wasnt going to put himself and his family through any more pain, he says, and he called up his doctor and said he was going to shoot himself and to come over and handle things, and he shot himself. Its the longest single sentence Cockcroft utters. He was eight or nine at the time. He cant remember exactly. He says his mother greeted him at the door after school and said, Father is dead. His only memory, after that, is, going out to the garage and not crying and wondering if I should cry. He was not close to his mother. She was a Vermont puritan, and not a naturally warm person. Did you ask her what happened to your father? No, he says, and for a moment I can hear the compliant boy. I mean no.

Do you forgive him? I admire him, he says wonderingly, as if the question is ridiculous. But it was a savage act of separation; his father didnt say goodbye.

Cockcroft says he remembers almost nothing of his life before his fathers death. He shows me fragments of an autobiography he has not finished, because he has not solved the problem of writing a narrative by multiple selves.

Was our childhood so traumatic we cant face it? he writes, in the third person. Our brother, Jim, thinks so. Jim is three years younger than we are and he remembers a cruel father that used to whip him with a belt. We dont have a single memory of being beaten with a belt. Jim is unrepressed, remembers a cruel father; we are repressed, remember nothing. Saw nothing, heard nothing, felt nothing. We have no painful memories pre-Dads death-day, nor any happy ones.

In 1969, while teaching in Mallorca, Cockcroft found a publisher for The Dice Man called Mike Franklin, and swiftly wrote the second half of the book. Franklin called it a near masterpiece and got a huge advance for the American edition.

It did badly in America, partly, Cockcroft thinks, because of a cover jacket featuring a naked woman lying on a bed. But it did better in Europe, particularly in England, Sweden, Denmark and now Spain, where it was for a time the most requested library book in Spanish universities.

No publisher asked for another novel, so he didnt write one. He fell into indolence; he was busy sailing and raising his children. Another example of my life of ambition, Cockcroft says, sarcastically. All through my 20s, I was fighting ambition. My mother had made me very ambitious to be successful at whatever I did, and I felt that was a sickness. I never wrote for money and I never consciously wrote for fame. The Dice Man was part of a lifelong process to get me to relax and enjoy things as they are, and not aspire to more than I have.

The film rights to The Dice Man were sold, and he wrote screenplays for a film that was never made. He and Ann travelled for years, often on boats; they smoked marijuana. He sank a catamaran in a storm in the Mediterranean, after Ann had prayed for three nights on deck while he apologised, precipitantly, for drowning their children. (They were picked up by a Scottish freighter 40 miles off the coast of Africa.)

The family settled in Canaan after following a Sufi cult to New York state. The Dice Man grew in fame, but Cockcroft didnt. He spent his money, and earned more. He wrote books only when the mood, or the advance, came: White Wind, Black Rider; Whim; Long Voyage Back; The Book Of Est, a guidebook to a popular 70s cult; The Book Of The Die; and Naked Before The World, a novel alluded to in The Dice Man. Jesus Invades George is a very funny tale of George W Bush being possessed by Jesus Christ. He wrote The Search For The Dice Man, in which Luke ends up in a Japanese monastery, but it is the work of a sleeping writer: Luke barely appears and, when he does, he is a cipher.

In 2012, an email announcing his death was sent to 25 friends, apparently from Ann: It is our pleasure to inform you that Luke Rhinehart is dead. He very much wanted us to tell you this as soon as possible so you wouldnt be annoyed that he wasnt replying to your emails. But people were upset, and he later apologised for his thoughtlessness, blaming Luke. To pretend to die while sneakily lurking here and there in the darkest shadows is the lowest of the low. But we can expect no better from him.

Ask me about Invasion, he says now. He wants another roll; he is enjoying the attention. This latest book is full of his politics, which are the politics of Bernie Sanders; its tone is amused disgust, and it is very funny, if you can handle an alien protagonist who looks like a beachball, and whose beachball friend is called Molire.

I try to find a tactful way to ask him: do you mind that The Dice Man, your first book, is your best book? But my opinion doesnt bother him, because he cant agree. Right now, he says, using the multiple pronoun, we have no idea of the relative merits of our novels. At this moment, Invasion is liked very much by most of us, more than our previous books. Two years ago, we told people our favourite novel was Whim. After I finished writing Jesus Invades George, it was our favourite novel. If Invasion fails to sell, he says, he doesnt think it will bother him for more than a single afternoon.

At the end of my stay, I ask Cockcroft again about his father. He tells me he has nightmares about the garage attached to the house in which he grew up, in which he tried to weep after his fathers death. He has an image, he says hesitantly, too faint to be a memory, of a maid washing blood off the walls in the house, at the top of the stairs. I feel morbid, prodding him. He has already told me more than he has told any journalist, and he doesnt believe in cause and effect. He cannot see a connection between his fathers suicide and the creation of the Dice Man, so I stop.

But a few days later, after I have returned to England, he sends me an email. Last night I had a really remarkable dream, he writes, using the first person. For the first time in months, if not years, I was outside the house where my father committed suicide. I was walking over to our neighbours house, where contractors were arriving to do some sort of work that involved both the neighbours property and ours. I said with great confidence and authority in the direction of the contractors (not seen), I am George Cockcroft, the owner of this property. I think the subject line, in capital letters, is a joke at my expense. It says, Im CURED!

Designers need to overcome deep-rooted stereotypes and take on the challenges presented by ageing populations, says Jeremy Myerson, curator of the New Old exhibition that just opened at London's Design Museum.

Unless you've spent the last decade living in a cave, you will know that every developed nation now has a rapidly ageing population. This demographic shift towards a society in which there are large numbers of older people and decreasing numbers of young people offers both challenges and opportunities for designers.

Across Europe, half the population will be over 50 by 2020. In the UK, 70 per cent of population growth over the next 25 years will be in the over-60 age group and it is predicted that half of all children born today will live to be 103. Our life expectancy at birth has increased by five years in the past 20, so more years are a given for most us.

This longer lifespan is the direct result of factors including falling mortality rates, better diet and advances in medical science, and should be something to celebrate. Instead we persist in seeing population ageing as a demographic time bomb, a disaster waiting to happen. Every year in winter, at a time of annual crisis in Britain's overflowing hospitals, the headlines about elderly people clogging up the care system reignite all the old, negative arguments.

The wider question, of course, is how we will live these extra years most of us are now granted. Will we enjoy independence and a good quality of life? Or will we become isolated and marginalised? In other words, will we have years full of life, or life full of years?

Design has a critical role to play in how successfully we will age: it affects how we build our homes, how we work and travel, and what products and services we will use in the future. So we need to start thinking now about design for societies in which older people will form a significant portion of the population. Already, one in four people in Japan are 65 or older.

What holds back designers from leaping whole-heartedly into this burgeoning field? Surely it's a no-brainer for the best creative minds to focus immediately on this area. The big obstacle, as I see it, is not technical – it is cultural. There remain deep-rooted, corrosive stereotypes around ageing, which have stayed the hand of a design community rooted in the twin cultures of youth and cool. The stigma of growing old persists and this needs to be creatively challenged if design is to be ready for demographic change.

I've just curated an exhibition at the Design Museum in London called New Old: Designing For Our Future Selves, which addresses this theme of using design to challenge stereotypes and remove stigma. The show presents many examples to show how the identity of the "new old" is in transition, with perceptions being shifted by creative new ideas in fashion, furniture, products and communication.

Exhibits range from NB Studio's energetic campaign to redesign the UK's famous "elderly people" road sign – replacing its sad, stereotypical silhouette of a stooping couple with a walking stick with new, vibrant ideas – to Lanzavecchia & Wai's No Country for Old Men collection of furniture, which challenges the "chintz and net curtains" image of ageing by combining contemporary design with practical support for older people.

There's a look at the fashion industry, famous for promoting the glamour of youth but now using the much older woman to sell style. And there are several special design commissions in the exhibition that chip away at well-worn stereotypes.

PriestmanGoode's Scooter for Life, for example, offers older people greater independence without the stigma associated with a mobility scooter. Konstantin Grcic's Head in the Sky, an outdoor metal structure inspired by a Renaissance painting, counters the notion of retreat from the world in later life. And Exchange by Special Projects is a living installation that allows young visitors to the exhibition to spend time in conversation with a real older person, thus addressing misconceptions head-on through conversation.

Projects like these are challenging the underlying model that perpetuates stigma, a medical model of ageing that views growing older as a disease to be cured. This model is primarily about dependency, decrepitude and death, and is why we have so many designs for older people that belong in a hospital – ghastly aids and appliances that try to help, but end up stigmatising the user.
