University: my Journey.
The really loved post about the university is here! a YEY for me and for you guys... We reached 2.1K on IG, I am super happy about it.
A little Disclaimer: I suffered from eating disorders and some part of this article may be triggering.
University... well. It was a really hard choice for me because I was so confused. My choices were: Veterinary, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Bioinformatics, Nursing school, Dietitian, and Vet tech.
My Year in Computer Engineering Bachelor Degree.
My transition from High School to Univesity didn't really go as smoothly as everyone expects to. I did some test for Engineering and got admitted in Bologna in Computer Engineering. In September the same Year, I did the Vet school national entry test, I failed miserably.
At that point I had just one choice, do the year in Bologna and see what that course would give to me. I started to go to lecture, do the life of someone who lives in another city in a student apartment but I wasn’t motivated, I was always tired and I concentrated rarely on what I was following and doing.
I started to think again about the medical field, I went to some of their lectures in Bologna since one of my friends (close friends) is there. I was really interested in their subjects and their study plan.
Again a lot of doubts, was really my path? Did I choose right? Lots of what ifs that brought me in a cycle of depression and eating disorders. At the time I was binge eating, everything sweet I could find was in my mouth plus the commodity to not have parents around controlling was, even more, a trigger.
Exam time was almost to an end, I didn’t pass any of the exams, I was always tired, I stopped going out and having fun with my friends, apartment mates, and colleagues. In the same period, I lost in three months around 16Kg, so my mom decided it was time for some blood analysis.
My turning point.
When I discovered I was Type 1 Diabetic in March/April after endless visits to the hospital and blood analysis I ended in a circle of bad thoughts again. After thinking and talking with a university counselor I opted to change the bachelor into Vet school the next year. I talked with my parents and I did the second-semester exams and then I started to prepare again for this Exam.
Medical Bioinformatics and My Vet ER course.
In September I did all the entry test I needed to do and waited for admission lists. I managed to enter in all the one I did but for Vet school was too far away from my city where I live. I wasn’t ready to go away again more for the Diabetes part and the fact that I would have changed the endo.
Medical Bioinformatics is a course which combines Med school, Computer Engineering and Genetic Engineering.
I am super happy for the choice I made, It’s not something induced by others, it’s not something that I can’t love because it’s still in the medical field.
I decided to incorporate into my studies a Vet school preparation and ER crash course that will permit me to work in the Vet field even if I’m not an actual vet. I will become a paramedic in the Veterinary field so in the future I can pursue a career in the Vet school.
Some tips
Choose what you love. Let you guide but not let others choose for you or put in your head that a certain course is better than others.
Research: Read all the courses and faculties that give you the option you love and evaluate carefully what can be the best option.
It’s okay to not get it right the first time. A lot of you guys may be anxious about this decision because it will define your future. Future is not a static thing, pathways to reach your goal can be millions of billions.
It’s okay to want to change the field from what you majored in high school. If you ask some older students it doesn’t matter the background, obviously, if you already did it advantage you but that doesn’t mean anything in university. The determination is the key.
Hope you guys enjoyed this post, I know it might not have helped you in choosing it but at least it gave you the idea that not everyone has a smooth path into choosing the university and sticking with the choice. :D
