The University of Washington has announced that Huskies legend Kelsey Plum will have her iconic No. 10 jersey retired in a ceremony on January 18, 2025, when UW takes on Purdue. Plum, who dazzled fans and broke records from 2013 to 2017, will be the first player in UW women's basketball history to receive this honor.
During her senior season, Plum solidified her place in basketball history by setting the NCAA Division I women's all-time scoring record with an unforgettable 57-point performance against Utah. Though Caitlin Clark recently surpassed that record, Plum’s legacy as a dynamic scorer and leader remains unmatched. She also led the Huskies to their first-ever Final Four appearance in 2016 and earned a spot on the AP All-America third team.

Flaps perform essential jobs. From pumping hearts to revving engines, flaps help fluid flow in one direction. Without them, keeping liquids going in the right direction is challenging to do. Researchers from the University of Washington have discovered a new way to help liquid flow in only one direction -- but without flaps. In a paper published Sept. 24 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they report that a flexible pipe -- with an interior helical structure inspired by shark intestines -- can keep fluid flowing in one direction without the flaps that engines and anatomy rely upon. Human intestines are essentially a hollow tube. But for sharks and rays, their intestines feature a network of spirals surrounding an interior passageway. In a 2021 publication, a different team proposed that this unique structure promoted one-way flow of fluids -- also known as flow asymmetry -- through the digestive tracts of sharks and rays without flaps or other aids to prevent backup. That claim caught the attention of UW postdoctoral researcher Ido Levin, lead author on the new paper.

Columbia University is in shambles.
How much longer until other universities fall? Let’s check in on them.
Right now I have UCLA, Northwestern, Portland State, NYU, University of Washington, Penn State, UNC, and CUNY.
UCLA
A parent released audio of a phone call with the UCLA Police Department.
@UCLA gave permission to release this audio of her phone call with @UCLAPD as they describe the school's directive to allow protestors to restrict the movement of Jewish students. "Are the protestors allowed to block students who are paying tuition from classes? No, but unfortunately, they have taken over that area." "We've received a directive not to intervene" "So you're allowing the protestors to block the Jewish students?" "I'm not allowing it... the school is. Yes, the school is saying that they will not be removed at this time."
The school doesn’t care that these people block Jewish students from classes.
We have videos of these people blocking Jews from campus and the library. We have videos of these people assaulting Jews.
Lots of videos of campus anti-Jewish insanity here at Legal Insurrection.

the nine University of Washington students who took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. The Boys of ’36 will show how the team overcame psychological, physical, emotional and economic hardships to beat not only East Coast Ivy League teams but Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers. Their surprise triumph gave hope to a nation struggling to recover from the Great Depression.

i would love any pictures of udub’s campus/u-district you happen to take, as well as your thoughts on its atmosphere. i hope you enjoy your walking date!
Hi Anon,
I woke up this morning, and it was just pouring rain. Students are coming back to campus, and the mood was dreary, but 10,000 steps waits for no woman, and I figured I’d still try to take some pics of Washington’s campus and the UW Row (beyond beautiful) for you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
U-District is the University District. UW is in an urban setting (city of Seattle), so instead of having a college town around the campus, there’s a district. The Ave refers to the Avenue and the businesses that line it; there are bars, shops, restaurants, a theater, a light rail and bus station, and other nice spots. U-District (near the campus) is definitely geared towards the students.

This is Suzzallo Library. It’s located on Red Square, and the architecture is gorgeous. I think this is UW’s most recognizable building, and it’s huge with tourists. It was built in the collegiate gothic style, and it’s a gigantic building. The interior has stained glass, and it’s usually open to the public, but it wasn’t today. Allen Library is a part of Suzzallo Library and just as nice.

This is the quad where the cherry blossoms bloom! It’s surrounded by different buildings (for example, the school of art), and it’s beautiful even in the rain. You can walk down to Drumheller Fountain, the IMA, University Village, Husky Stadium, and the University of Washington light rail station through Red Square, see Mount Rainier, and access most parts of campus through the quad. It’s also quite easy to walk through.

These are some of the row houses. There’s an extreme shortage of housing on campus and in Seattle, so if you do rush, you move into the house immediately, and it ends up being cheaper than living on or off campus. All of the houses are beautiful, large, and built with a lot of thought put into them, but these are my two favorites. The row is located directly across the street from the entrance of the school and directly up the road from U-District and there are a number of houses.

Here’s the school of art and the school of drama. Both buildings are large, built nicely, and on opposite ends of campus. I was able to look inside both, and they’re filled with hardwood, stone, and stained glass. I think the older (more arts focused) buildings are gorgeous, and the newer science and engineering buildings are a bit more modern. The university has great architecture, and I’m always amazed by the size of UDub’s campus.
Here’s a video I took of Red Square early this morning.
Sorry for the bad pictures!!

Stretchable, wearable device lights up an LED using only the warmth of skin
One of the drawbacks of fitness trackers and other wearable devices is that their batteries eventually run out of juice. But what if in the future, wearable technology could use body heat to power itself? UW researchers have developed a flexible, durable electronic prototype that can harvest energy from body heat and turn it into electricity that can be used to power small electronics, such as batteries, sensors or LEDs. This device is also resilient—it still functions even after being pierced several times and then stretched 2,000 times. The team detailed these prototypes in a paper published Aug. 30 in Advanced Materials. "I had this vision a long time ago," said senior author Mohammad Malakooti, UW assistant professor of mechanical engineering. "When you put this device on your skin, it uses your body heat to directly power an LED. As soon as you put the device on, the LED lights up. This wasn't possible before."
